Wish I could hit the rack. However I might miss the southbound ferry. Boarding starts around 4 AM and have to be at terminal by 3AM. If I do not make it I would have to wait at least a week before another ferry came. Penalty of living on an island I guess.

Will airports screen for body signals?
One is a thermal imaging device that measures the temperature of a face. A screener would look for temperature changes — a possible stress response — as a person is asked questions.Another device, an eye tracker, follows a person’s gaze, checks the amount of blinking and measures pupil dilation.
This is real Running Man type stuff. Mega-blinkers like Nancy Pelosi might find air travel difficult in the near future.

As for the Reader’s Digest recap of sports, I think alot of that has to do with the fact that I’m only able to catch most games of interest (to me, at least) on the radio.

Yes, that one. It’s an awesome photo. Some of the train pics from that site are really top drawer artsy stuff.
As far as catching up on sports, I don’t even have time to slog through all my trade journals. I found some from four and five months ago still in their wrapper. As far as sports go, I like all the relevant stuff quick-and-dirty. Sometimes I leave Sports Center on the for background noise and get caught up, but lately I’ve hardly even turned on the TV. The last major thing I watched was the Klitschko fight, and I can’t think of anything of note since. I was halfway trying to follow boxing this year, and I’ve failed miserably at that.

Conservapedia: Where they argue about homosexual penguins.
Actual Conservapedia entry: Unicorn
he Unicorn is likely purely a mythical beast, commonly depicted as resembling a white horse with a single horn grown out of its forehead.
(snip)The word “unicorn” is included in the text of the King James translation of The Bible nine times[4]. Many other versions translate the ancient texts differently.
Popular opinion is that Unicorns are mythical, however some young earth believing Christian apologists have advanced various arguments that the biblical Unicorn was not a fantasy animal and that the animal did not have one horn. [5] In the original texts, unicorns go by the Hebrew name Re-em whereas the Greek Septuagint used the word monokeros, meaning “one-horned”.[6] The English word “unicorn” is derived from the Latin, ūnicornis, also meaning “one-horned”.
While popularly characterized as a horned member of the horse baramin, it is likely that the “unicorn” was actually quite un-horselike. One recognized theory is that “unicorn” actually refers to a rhinoceros, and a growing number of Creation researchers are theorizing that the unicorn was actually a member of the ceratopsian baramin. However no fossil evidence of unicorns has been found to date.[6] In the past, narwhal tusks, with their distinctive spiraled shape, have often been mistaken for or inaccurately advanced as unicorn horns.

Why iz Johnny an atheist, Conservapedia? Do tell.
In regards to the causes of atheism, there are a number of reasonable explanations for atheism:
* Moral depravity: The history of the atheist community and various studies regarding the atheist community point to moral depravity being a causal factor for atheism. In addition, there is the historical matter of deceit being used in a major way to propagate atheism from the time of Charles Darwin onward. Also, Bible exegesis points to the moral depravity of atheists. Moral depravity is certainly one of the prime causes of atheism.
* Rebellion: Atheism stems from a deliberate choice to ignore the reality of God’s existence
* Superficiality: Noted ex-atheist and psychologist Dr. Paul Vitz has stated that he had superficial reasons for becoming an atheist such as the desire to be accepted by his Stanford professors who were united in disbelief regarding God.[3]
* Error: Some argue that atheism partly stems from a failure to fairly and judiciously consider the facts [4]
* Poor relationship with father: Some argue that a troubled/non-existent relationship with a father may influence one of the causes of atheism.*Scientism: Science has in many ways become a new God.
Glad we got that cleared up.

Utter bastard.
Kate accuses Jon of draining their joint checking account.Kate Gosselin says he withdrew more than $200,000 from the couple’s joint bank account without authorization, leaving her with $1,000.
“He took $230,000 of the $231,000 we had,” the reality TV mom told NBC Monday. “I have a stack of bills. The last thing I wanted was to do this show and end up not being able to pay our bills.”
Marty Singer, a lawyer for Kate Gosselin, told People magazine that Jon Gosselin didn’t notify his ex-wife about the withdrawal before taking the money from their account last week, even though a court stipulated it must approve such transactions. Singer added that he expects Kate Gosselin’s family law attorney to go to court Monday to argue that Jon Gosselin be held in contempt.
The cash controversy comes on the heels of Jon Gosselin’s declaration that he wants off the show and he wants his kids off camera for good.

And, believe me, I celebrate the hell out of Halloween. It’s my favorite holiday, for real. I watch horror movies, visit haunted houses, listen to old radio shows, decorate the house, try out all kinds of pumpkin recipes, see displays and artwork - it’s most definitely my month. From October 1st to November 1st I’m wringing it out, pedal to the metal, full-on Halloween.
For Christmas I usually put up lights and ornaments in the windows. And I see the Nutcracker every year, and try to catch The Messiah if it’s being performed live somewhere. I may be an atheist, but I like the music and decorations. The rest of it I try to ignore.

I usually try to catch the local broadcast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
For Halloween, that is.

It’s an entertaining show about a couple who had twin girls and then decided they wanted another child. Through IVF, they wound up with eight. TLC had a show titled “Jon and Kate Plus Eight” which followed them around. Gosh, those kids are adorable.

Conservapedia’s proposed debate topics— a selection:
Was Jesus born in the right time and place?Like most babies he arrived when he was ready.
If Jesus were alive to day, where on the political spectrum would he fall? Not sure about politics, but he would definitely fall on the moneychangers in the temple again, whip in hand.
Should all access to Conservapedia be banned on Sundays? It’s a start
What is sufficient proof that Obama is a Muslim? If he starts bowing down and praying toward Mecca 5 times a day, something he has never shown any inclination to do.
Why is homosexuality so bad?One of the biggest drawbacks is that homosexuals are persecuted by fearful rubes and bigots like the ones who run Conservapedia.
You think these Phd’s are nuts?If you mean the diploma mill PhDs who contribute to Conservapedia, that is an obvious yes.
Crusades… Good or Bad?Depends on whether you were a Crusader or a Crusadee.
Which is a more powerful ideology, Islam or Communism?Islam, without a doubt. Thriving while communism continues to fade away.
Should people genetically engineer a cure for homosexuality? No, I think dogs and cats should do this.
Why did God place most of the world’s oil in politically unstable places? There was no such thing as politics when the oil was placed there.
Does Darwinian natural selection suggest that bigotry is a necessary self-defense mechanism? No, creationism is an example of a bigoted self-defense mechanism.
Why are God’s works always questioned?Because of the long history of quacks and charlatans representing their own creations, notions, and self-interest as the works of God.
Is Rap music torture?

Speaking of misogyny,…
The ban was posted on Hamas Interior Ministry Web site on Tuesday, in an effort “to preserve citizen safety and the stability of Palestinian society’s customs and traditions.”
Hamas wants to impose a strict interpretation of Islam. Its other efforts have included breaking up mixed couples on the beach and obliging female lawyers to wear headscarves in court.
The group insists compliance with the campaign is voluntary and reflects Gaza’s conservative ways, but reports have surfaced of offenders being beaten or arrested.

I remember you from awhile back - missed you when you left.
I always thought you were a classy lady. Perhaps I was mistaken?
I think you know full well what has happened to all of those folks you mentioned.
What you may have missed:
1. Realwest popped in occasionally to say hi, then would leave saying he was too tired and ill to hang around much. Many people here were very worried about him, and he stopped answering e-mails! He was then discovered well and kicking at another blog. Some of his friends here had been very worried about him, and were upset no end at the deception.
2. Goddess suddenly decided one day that we here were no fit to be included on her prayer list. We continued our prayer list, including everyone who was on it at the time she left, but alas, we were dropped from hers.
3. Many of the others you mentioned - not all, but many of them - are at another blog now, where regularly, they wish harm to Charles and really, anyone who still posts here.

In this case, it appears that he openly violated a court order; the account was under the court’s supervision, with explicit instructions to both parties that withdrawals had to be approved. In many cases, one of the parties is not so lucky, and they quickly learn that joint accounts are an “either/or” proposition once an account has been drained. If this happens prior to legal proceedings, it can take a huge amount of time to straighten things out, if that’s even still possible.

I don’t think Kate is crazy. Sure, she’s a perfectionist at times but, one must be highly organized when dealing with eight kids.
Good morning, Mandy. In my personal opinion, having eight kids would be grounds for being called crazy, but then again, the Mrs. Fish is the last of seven, so I guess I shouldn’t speak too loudly.

Not gonna stand, however. Unlike many couples - when accounts get drained prior to any formal legal filings - this one directly violated a judge’s orders. I’d expect he’ll be ordered to replace it immediately, and that there’ll be hell to pay if he doesn’t.
Not only did he defy the court, he did so in a highly publicized case. I don’t know of any judge who would not rip him a new one.

Checketts is the former President of the NY Knicks and Utah Jazz and is a highly respected sports executive. This could make the NFL Owners’ Meetings very entertaining if it comes to pass. Much as I liked Dawkins’ new book, and it had an extensive section on the Lenski experiment (which Dawkins advised readers not to look at if they were tired), I also would recommend Jerry Coyne’s book “Why Evolution is True”, which I am slowly reading at the moment. There is a lot more discussion of small items that can only be explained by assuming the validity of neo-Darwinism, so to that extent it’s a better book for creationist bashing. Both books together would be, in my opinion, required reading to get a good grounding in evolutionary theory, and I’d throw in Evolution for Dummies as well.

Courtesy of Sensuous Curmudgeon, here is an interesting letter in a Kansas newspaper:
A new survey shows Kansas secondary biology teachers have the lowest rates of creationist belief of teachers in any of the states surveyed. The survey results — presented at a September conference of the Kansas Association of Biology Teachers and due to be published in an upcoming Kansas Biology Teacher journal — verify that the general press image of Kansas being backward on evolution is completely opposite of the facts. The percentage of biology teachers from different states who thought that creation has a valid scientific foundation were: Kentucky teachers, 69 percent; Oklahoma, 48 percent; South Dakota, 39 percent; Ohio, 38 percent; Illinois, 30 percent; Georgia, 30 percent; Louisiana, 29 percent; and Kansas, 24 percent.
[…]
Gahhh… I wonder how that survey was done, if it is indeed accurate. If 69% of the biology teachers in Kentucky really do think creationism has a valid scientific foundation then that explains a lot of things…

I’m the type of guy who will always find something to disagree with except when it comes to things like Hamas, (people that use furries to teach kids to be suicide bombers DESERVE A CRUISE MISSILE TO THEIR FACES). And that would normally get me mobbed up on most places. This place being very effectively bipartisan, it comfortably neutralizes things.

Gahhh… I wonder how that survey was done, if it is indeed accurate. If 69% of the biology teachers in Kentucky really do think creationism has a valid scientific foundation then that explains a lot of things…
Or perhaps their board of education is completely out of touch with the teachers.

I was behind a judge dropping a child off at school today and it got me to thinking. Why are judges and representatives/senators given license plates stating their jobs? I understand why firefighters and other emergency workers need them on their private vehicles—in an emergency, they need to be waved through any kind of line ASAP.
But, why judges and elected officials? I cannot think of a single emergency to which they must respond quickly. Why not give them some sort of sticker for their windows or, the plate itself? What is so special about those people?

Whiff of something weird in New Haven, Connecticut:
[Link: www.fox61.com…]
NEW HAVEN - Police have arrested a man after they found his vehicle was filled with explosives.
Around 11:30 p.m., police said that a car was found with explosives at the intersection of Grand Ave and Clinton Ave. Police said that the car had long guns, pipe bombs and propane tanks. The bomb squad did respond to the incident.
A silver Mercedes was towed away from the scene. Police arrested a suspect, but they did not release his name.
Police said a four-block area was blocked off around the intersection.

NEW HAVEN (AP) — Police say they’ve stopped a car full of explosives in a Connecticut residential area.
They say the car was carrying pipe bombs, rifles and a propane tank when they stopped it Tuesday night in New Haven, one of the state’s largest cities. They say they’ve closed off a four-block area because of the danger posed by the explosives but haven’t evacuated it.
The bomb squad has been called in. There have been no reports of injuries.
Police spokesman Joseph Avery says he doesn’t know if anyone was arrested.

No problem Walter, glad to have helped. Of course, if it’s a waste is a matter of personal opinion about the importance of the first lady to the country.
All of Washington, and the cadres of politicians prancing in and out of that city has become our version of Versailles. Top heavy with elite plutocrats and kleptocrats, men and woman who have never had to work a real job for a single day of their lives.
Like the “royalty” who roamed aimlessly in the halls of Versailles, actually shitting on the floor when the urge hit, most of our politicians use the halls of popular media to shit on us every Sunday morning, both right and left, boldface lying, out of touch pronouncements and clueless platitudes.
And who’s fault is it? It’s our fault. In the case of Versailles, those pouty M. et Mme escaped to Versailles to hide from the citizens. In our wonderful wisdom, we have propped them up in Washington and at times are actually proud of our little circus.
Importance and over-importance is two different things. Our politicians have totally lost sight of what is important and have let their own over-importance become job one.

Stickers can easily be ripped off. (I know a plate can be too) but on a traffic stop the plate (registration) must match the vehicle, not so much a ‘sticker”

Morning all.
Just curious about the thread-reading behavior of others here.
I admit to going to the last 10 or so comments on the thread and then working my way back up on what seems to be interesting. In most cases I don’t make it back up more than 30 comments. So I miss quite a bit.
I am just curious if others do the same or not. I know there are more diligent readers who start at the top and read down. Wondering which group is bigger.
There was a time, years ago, when I would read a whole dead thread from the top down. Now I jump into the Master Spy, start at the bottom (which gives you about 100 posts, from all the threads) and scan for anything interesting, then watch the current posts come up.

Why not stickers?
Without saying who or where I wrote an application for a big government org that uses handheld optical scanners to read the license plate of vehicles to see if they have privileges to park in a particular structure / floor / space.
We started with trying barcodes and RFID. Problem was security - someone could get a hold of such a sticker and drive in a bomb. While the idea arises “Then you can just swap plates” we came up with a clever way to detect that.
But with what we wrote and deployed, there would be no need to place any special designation on the tag. But only there are only two orgs using our system although others are showing interest.

In TN you could $35 extra and get your license plate personalized to make it say umm just about anything you want in 3 to 7 letters. (certain restrictions apply)
Using ALL CAPS, legibly print numbers, letters (no punctuation), and blanks in the boxes as you wish them to appear on the plate. Give three choices, in order of preference. (First block must contain a character, no leading blank spaces allowed†)

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. President Obama says that he wont agree to large reductions of troops in Afghanistan, and that sounds like good news, until you realize that he leaves the door open to smaller reductions, and he clearly doesn’t have Democrats’ support for troop increases as House Democrats want to set an exit strategy and are opposed to troop increases.
Afghanistan is on the razor’s edge, and Democrats who have complained for years that the Bush Administration ignored Afghanistan by not sending more troops and support, are now pursuing a strategy that would further reduce support for operations in Afghanistan. Even as the situation has improved in Iraq; and US troops are taking advisory roles instead of leading roles in combat operations in Iraq, and troop numbers have been reduced, Democrats are unwilling to engage in troop increases in Afghanistan to stabilize the situation there and to take the fight to the Taliban who have continued to harbor al Qaeda on both sides of the Afghan/Pakistani border.
Throw in the fact that you’ve got some Democrats, like Sen. Levin, pushing a nonsensical theory that increased troops will be counterproductive ignores the success of troop increases in Iraq to stabilize the situation there. The Surge worked, and troop numbers are down, and Iraq’s government has control over most of the provinces directly; not the sign of an occupying power, but one that looks to create a stable situation. Levin claims he’s concerned that we’d be viewed as an occupying nation, and yet that has not been the case. He’s made a bogus strawman argument, and one that doesn’t hold water.

So charge them the extra few pennies it costs and be done with it. I see no problem with a tiny, inexpensive perk that serves a purpose for parking and access.
Like it or not elected officials and the like are a unique subset of citizens and get some perks of office, and a special plate is a minor perk IMHO.

Regarding the elitism thing - it is there. Many get off on the designation. But there are just as many who would rather not have it I am sure. In the case where we were contracted simply having parking privileges was a very big deal - it meant you had worked for the org for at least 10 years. But there was not a desire by most that the public knew who you were although there were some who really wanted a decal for that very reason.

I’m not talking about that state’s vanity plates as it has nothing to do with me. I’m talking about a state issuing these special plates—for which the taxpayers pay—to people who are already well compensated. It smacks of elitisim.
If you want elitism, visit a casino. The high limit players get head of the line privileges, special tables at the restaurants, stage center seating and the rest. Like the elected officials, part of it is just catering to egos.
BTW Mandy, if I new you were in line at the casino, I might well pause before stepping in front of you. :)

The surge worked in Iraq, and may work in Afghanistan, but not trying this at a time when the Taliban are resurgent is a mistake. The existing strategy isn’t getting the job done as the Taliban are making inroads, and if more troops are needed to carry out the mission, then something has to give. The House Democrats have one strategy in mind, and that can be distilled to cut and run, the same strategy the proposed for Iraq. At least Obama hasn’t caved to the far left of his party yet, and Obama may yet pull things out in Afghanistan, but it will not be with the help of his fellow Democrats.

Yeah, I think Obama is really caught between the rock and a hard place (and the splits, even in the executive branch, are coming out — that became evident with vice-president Biden’s remarks..). (There were headlines the other day in the National Post which quoted a Canadian general, Vance, as saying: “If we keep blowing up on the roads, I’m going to stop doing development.” Vance has received very little cooperation from the Afghanis..(there’s a project currently underway in which Canadian troops are being used to build roads.))

Did a little digging to see which other gases were included in that study..
According to the EPA announcement, the finding was based on rigorous scientific analysis of six gases — carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride — that have been widely studied by scientists. The agency said its studies showed that concentrations of the gases were at unprecedented levels as a result of human activity and that it was highly likely that those elevated levels were responsible for an increase in average temperatures and other climate changes.
I’m all for federal guidelines on methane emissions!

Seeing this about the license plates is interesting. I know that Illinois has dozens for every cause out there. However, the basic official plates are as follows:
Passenger car (also SUV and minivan): Red, white, blue (red letters & numbers) with Lincoln’s head in the center.
Truck (pickup truck, van): Red and white (blue letters & numbers) with Lincoln’s head in the center, usually marked as “B TRUCK”.
RV (also pickup truck with cap on bed): Green on white with Lincoln’s head in center, marked as “RV”.
Now to the state and municipal ones:
Municipal police: Blue and white, marked as “MP”.
Municipal or county: Green on white, starts with the letter “M”.
State or ISTHA: Green on white, starts with the letter “U”.
There are also special ones for elected officials.
Here’s a list of them (PDF format).

Never play against players that can push you around with a big stack. Playing against the guys that came in on the bus can be profitable, against those that the casino flew in, not so much.

Here’s an excellent article on Obama and Israel:
Obama and Israel: Betrayal in the Broken Places
For a politician, there is no more dangerous combination of traits than hubris and ineptitude. In a friendly environment, the detrimental effects of these flaws can be staved off, for a time, by talented spin doctors, a sympathetic press, or the enthusiasm of one’s followers. In the maelstrom of Middle East politics, however, they tend to be almost immediately apparent, and the resulting fall from grace is often precipitous. President Barack Obama, who appears to possess both traits in unique abundance, has had to find this out the hard way; and whether he has learned his lesson or not remains to be seen…

I don’t think you can clearly define victory in Afghanistan. Neither does the President apparently, unless he’s changed his mind since June.. Obama: ‘Victory’ Not Necessarily Goal in Afghanistan
President Obama has put securing Afghanistan near the top of his foreign policy agenda, but “victory” in the war-torn country isn’t necessarily the United States’ goal, he said Thursday in a TV interview.“I’m always worried about using the word ‘victory,’ because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur,” Obama told ABC News.
The enemy facing U.S. and Afghan forces isn’t so clearly defined, he explained.
It does seem kind of bizarre that the CIC has tens of thousands of troops there, but victory isn’t necessarily the goal. Clumsy wording.

At the shopping mall

European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana expressed concern Wednesday over “recent clashes in east Jerusalem.”
A familiar pattern, invariably following a reprehensible action against Israel by whatever group felt it was their turn. The head of state in Weenieland feels that he or she has to say something, just to maintain the illusion that their opinion matters and that they have more than bugger all influence in the region. It has to be “even-handed”, so expressing concern and urging restraint goes a long way.

I didn’t like Medaura’s reports on it at first, but the evidence supporting her popped up. First there were the commentors at JW who were nuts, then Spencer’s allies all went openly eurofascist (GoV, etc), then Spencer himself showed what a lack of class he had.
Spencer’s own actions and words bore out the truth of Medaura’s reports. Even if you don’t like what is said, the truth is the truth, and facts are facts, and Medaura was right.

That is Pulp Fiction I think. Samuel L. Jackson and J. Travolta accidentaly blow off this guys head in a car and need it cleaned up. They go to Q. Tarantinos house who call Mr. Wolf.
La Femme Nikita has a cleaner in it too, but it is a French guy who plays a similar role in a number of movies.

Inside the State Dining Room, where the meeting was held, Obama’s Republican opponent in last year’s presidential race, Sen. John McCain, told Obama that he should not move at a “leisurely pace,” according to people in the room.
That comment later drew a sharp response from Obama, they said. Obama said no one felt more urgency than he did about the war, and there would not be nothing leisurely about it.

I know what you mean. The American movie would fall into that category - gratuitous violence for its own sake. Le Femme Nikita is actually a very good movie. The violence (not altogether graphic) is secondary to the story of the main character who is an assassin for the French Government. The story is how it came about, and what it does to a person in that line of work.

Nobel prizes remind us why immigration matters
If you’re looking for reasons to puff out your chest and take pride in being American, then take note that the first six Nobel Prize winners announced this week are U.S. citizens.
Here’s something else you should know: Four of those winners were born outside the U.S.
That dynamic neatly summarizes the current state of our innovation economy. We are increasingly dependent on brainpower from overseas that migrates here to drive the research and discoveries we need to power economic growth.

That would be like keeping voice mail messages of all the girls I asked out on dates that responded “F*** off!”

In retrospect, I find it creepy the way OR was saying, “I’m going to be in X Town soon, anybody want to get together for a beer?” In one case, directly to someone who followed him in flouncing. And then he outed his old, obvious sock. Still, I didn’t assume it was coming, but I was not surprised when it did.
I missed it. Did OR flounce or just leave? I always enjoyed bantering with him and the recent ‘activity’ has been a bit bewildering.

I don’t like these tea parties one bit.
The idea of grown men and women sitting at freakishly small, brightly-colored tables and talking to stuffed animals is just creepy.

I could say somewhat the same thing about your Filipino jeepneys.

I’ve also seen King of New York, long time ago. I should see it again.
My mother (sort of) knew Christopher Walken in college.
Walken’s SNL routine about the census is just hilarious.

Why are they coming to the States instead of staying in their home country; methinks it has something to do with the ability to secure financing to do the research here, rather than in their home countries.
And there’s a long history of foreign born winners.
They are definitely following the money trail, but for the right reasons. The U.S. is light-years ahead of, say, the EU in terms of public funding for research. And as for private funds, forget it.

Well if you Americans hadn’t left your jeeps here to rot after the War…

Was in Baguio 3 years ago. The ride up and back from Manila was interesting, seeing the shops with yet-to-be-customized jeepneys out in front, and the finished products all over the place. (First saw them in Olongapo in the Sixties.)

The name was the equivalent of “OR’s Sock”
I have one called “wenchwrench.”
I don’t have a sock. I wanted to register “Vicious Babushka” to match my blog, but never got a round tuit.

I’m realizing we haven’t had a good pun thread in a while.
Maybe most of the lizards who liked them left?
But I don’t see the stalker blogs as being a place to go for humor.

Good, You and a couple of others.
Next time I think it is a good time, I’ll start a pun thread and see what happens.

Is OR still around? Haven’t seen him post in a while.
