Colbert should know.
By the way... Beck's not crazy. He's just Mormon, according to Joann Brooks.
///
(This is actually pretty offensive if you consider substituting another religious faith, or even ethnicity, for her use of ' Mormon' in the piece).

In 1980 cast my third PRESIDENTIAL VOTE for Jimmy Carter. Ran part of his phone action in Central NJ as well. By my surveys, I figured that Ronald Reagan would be elected by about 10/20/1980 unless Anderson got about 15% of the vote.

Red Eye's pretty funny a lot of the time. Way over the top for Fox you'd think, but I guess considering the time slot..

Ya'll have a good Saturday...

Haven't seen it.

Obviously, I don't always agree with Colbert. But his USO tour in Iraq was really good, and the troops obviously loved it.

His demolition of Orly Taitz was also a classic.

Uh-oh. Does Jindal have a scandal brewing?

Jindal Fires State Employee One Day After She Criticizes Him

Gov. Bobby Jindal fired a state worker, Melody Teague, one day after she publicly condemned his plans to privatize state services. The worker's attorney claimed Teague was told that she was terminated for poor performance in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, years ago.

Louisiana Democratic Party Chairman Chris Whittington has launched an investigation into the incident.

Melody Teague criticized Jindal during a forum held by the Commission for Streamlining Government. Soon after, the contract grants reviewer was told she was fired for her handling of the state's disaster food stamps program four years ago, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

According to The Advocate, Commission member Leonal Hardman believes that Teague was "unfairly targeted because she spoke out publicly at the streamlining forum."

In a statement, Chairman Whittington said, "For all of his talk about ethics reform, how ethical is it to fire a state employee for expressing her opinion publicly at a forum?"

Barack Obama ready to pay Afghan fighters to ditch the Taliban

The Obama administration is considering outbidding the Taliban to persuade Afghan villagers to lay down arms as it struggles to find a new approach to a war that is fast losing public and congressional support.

Despite five war councils in two weeks, President Barack Obama has so far failed to come up with a strategy for the conflict that may define his presidency. Fierce infighting continues between his own generals and advisers.

I can think of 2 reasons.

1) There are probably refining and contractual issues which would have to be worked out on a multinational level to do that.

2) You could offer the farmers any amount of money, but if the Taliban rides in and says grow opium and sell it to us or we kill you and your whole family, the Taliban is likely to get the deal.

Yeah you're right. I was just being a little on the idealistic side. Afghanistan is way too "wild" at the present time. I don't think it will ever change, even if we get real communications into that country so that they can see all sides of the situation instead of some psycho beard indoctrinating them. It's a generational thing and if they were ever to get out of the 7th century it will take a lot of time.

They even have a movie that "quotes" Benjamin Franklin

309 _RememberTonyC  Sat, Oct 10, 2009 6:05:17pm

glenn beck is a unique character in many ways. it's obvious he's right on the emotional edge every day. he appeals to many conservative people on a very superficial level. he says things they agree with and plays to their insecurities and fears. but his intellectual and emotional closets are full of skeletons. Most who watch him have no clue about the darker forces that are aligned with him. Some are WELL aware of them and are cool with it. As a TV producer myself, I think I have a feel for what he brings to FOX. He creates on air tension and is very polarizing. As a result of these qualities, his audience is huge. yet he is alienating many sponsors, which is usually death for a TV performer. With no commercials, the bills don't get paid. But I think Roger Ailes at FOX will live with his sponsors bailing because his monster ratings lift the entire daily average ratings by a significant amount, thus allowing FOX's other shows to charge more for ad time because beck lifts the total day's average rating. FOX still benefits from his large audience even though some sponsors are insisting their ads do NOT run in his show. So those aponsors will appear on Shepherd Smith or Brett Baier's shows. And Beck's commercial breaks will be filled by sponsors who have not bailed, or even by network promos that tell you about FOX's other shows. The day Beck is gone will be the day he does something SO outrageous that even FOX has to say "sayonara." Even FOX has its limits. But as long as he pulls in 2,500,000-3,000,000 homes at 5pm ET every day and doesn't come right out and use the N word or go "Howard Beale" on live TV, he will hang in there.

But if Ailes and FOX want to regain any journalistic credibility, they should really consider what this guy's antics are doing to their image. because after many years of watching FOX 60% of the time and splitting the other 40% between CNN and MSNBC, I'm now watching CNN much more and FOX much less. CNN has improved. MSNBC is still a joke, but I still sample them to stay aware of what they have on the air.

To win any conflict, you need to provide a clear message to enemy and people sitting on the sidelines. Work with us, and we can provide stability, security and other benefits, fight against us, and you will be destroyed, utterly and completely. hence the big operation this week that clipped ten of our guys...they are squeezing BO this very minute

Sort out the escaping men from the ordinary Afghani woman. Use a local woman translator or enemy of the Taliban. Something like that. No gain in surrounding a place to just let the bad guys run out with the civilians. Like our errors in Falloujah.

re: #318 boyo

Classic rhetorical folly. That crap doesn't last long in here:

If you are against fire, pick up a hose.
If you want to help the poor, give your money away before you ask others to.
If you want to feed the poor, cook food.
If you want to fight cancer, pick up a scalpel.

Shall I go on?

Combined with 'if we blow up a relative it makes indoctrination easier for the psychobeards.'

Please levy some critical and well reasoned critique of the way things are being handled in Afghanistan or produce some ideas on how to change it. Stop with the weak leftist canards, please.

Feedback loop? Outrage=higher ratings=new outrage, until it goes so far as to unwatchable. Then finally ratings fall and adjustments are made. Have I got this right?

basically true. but beck's ratings show no sign of slippage. but even if they fell by 50%, he'd still be kicking ass in his time period. his competition is so far behind that they might as well not even exist. but there is a burnout factor with beck. he's on the high wire every day and he may lose his balance and fall. that would be his potential "Howard Beale" moment. And when it happens, it will not be pretty.

Well, we might try a fair system like universal service (Israel, Germany) or a lottery draft. But that could diminish enthusiasm for and sales of magnetic "support the latest dumb military adventure" yellow car ribbons.

Thanks! I have been percolating this feedback loop ratings theory as applies to shrill politics. It may explain the left/right MSM bias perceptions or amplify them. Perhaps the "You Lie!" incident shows the (in the end) perilous utility of this tactic. "You Lie" raised a lot of money for that congressman and his opponent. I would expect this to accelerate until that Howard Beale moment. The famous frog stunt came close.

Yes, weak leftist canard no matter how many times you type 'hm... ok.' It's Level 1 thinking, nothing deeper than 'we blow them up, makes the others mad at us.' As stated, the implication is that if we quit blowing them up, they won't be mad at us any more and maybe war will stop.

Is it that simple? Please correct me if I'm wrong about assuming that is the depth and process of your reasoning.

As for you comment about enlisting, that's evasive. Forget that, let's just stick to one point at a time.

Even FOX has its limits. But as long as he pulls in 2,500,000-3,000,000 homes at 5pm ET every day and doesn't come right out and use the N word or go "Howard Beale" on live TV, he will hang in there.

I wonder if pretending to hit the President a couple of times is their limit?

yea you got me wrong ,this isnt about making anyone mad or not mad but you already knew that.and wars will never stop.
but it seems to me the more you bomb someone the more fire you give to a resistance, the easier it is to get villagers who would have not wanted to be involved to come in on your side..

You know, the choices are not between "bomb them with fire" and "get out of Afghanistan".

Maybe appeal to the people that don't want to live in a medieval society (economically speaking), for one.

OK, then I'm wrong about you. I thought you were saying it's about making people mad or not.

Of course the more you bomb a people the madder the populace gets, especially if it's indiscriminate and no care is taken to target aggressors. That's why we have spent billions and billions of dollars on research to make more precise weapons while at the same time getting boots on the ground and staying in the communities instead of sitting in bases and coming out only for search and destroy missions.

So, we're on it, the military 'get's it.' We did that in Iraq already.

Ever since the first time I saw Beck (that would be his "I love my country, and I fear for it" rant) he struck me as different from the rest of the pundits. Hannity and Olbermann surely think they speak with God's Voice coming out of their mouths, and O'Reilly is just an ass, but Beck seems to me as 100% phony. Fake tears, fake rants, everything about him seems like a put on act.
