From RNC chairman Michael Steele’s hip new “What Up?” blog:

The Internet has been around a while, now.

UPDATE at 10/13/09 1:48:50 pm:

And as soon as I post the quote of the day, we have competition — also from Michael Steele:

It’s not even really a web site.

I'm sure Michael Steele is aware of all internet traditions.

The Republicans really should quit talking about the internet. Everytime they open their mouths they make themselves sound like dinosaurs - just look at Ted "The Internet Is A Series of Tubes" Stevens.

Ahem; from Oxford English Dictionary:

USAGE The adverb awhile ( : we paused awhile) should be written as one word. The noun phrase, meaning 'a period of time,' esp. when preceded by a preposition, should be written as two words ( : Margaret rested for a while ;: we’ll be there in a while ). See also usage at worthwhile .

I believe Steele wrote it correctly.

The Internet has been around a while, now.

And rest assured, the GOP is struggling to keep up. While we undermine or demonize science at every opportunity, we still embrace the technology born from it that allows us greater ability to show how we struggle with the modernization we claim to support.

I actually like Michael Steele. He seems like a well intentioned guy. And the GOP showed some brains by naming him chairman. The GOP needs to attract Blacks and other minorities. But after making this smart appointment, they have allowed the party to be overly influenced by the extremists on the right, thus negating any appeal to minorities that Steele's appointment was supposed to encourage. It's almost like some smart folks in the GOP knew the party needed to drift towards the center, but many more felt that going "far right" was a better idea. So the net effect is that the GOP took one step forward and four steps back. Clearly this is a recipe for a second Obama term in 2012.

In my humble opinion, the internet has not had a long life when compared to other methods of communication such as books, newspapers, radio and tv. The first time I was able to access remote networks thru the internet was in '95. That is only 9 years ago. And I was an early adapter. Text analysis, courtesy of Rush Limbaugh

Rush - Blathering on about 'State-Run Media'
I've run a test, I take an average 45-minute segment of this show and compare the number of times I use the word "I" compared to the number of times Obama uses the word "I" in an average 45 minute speech and it's no contest. I mean I'm a piker compared to the personal pronoun usage of President Obama.

Damn! Once they get onto something that's 'science-y' they are like a dog with a bone!

I know! Let's do a text analysis of who uses the word 'Communist' more (Rush or Obama), then accuse the winner of being a Communist! Any takers on who would win?

After Steele capitulated to Rush, it was over. He's not the Chairman, he's a pawn. He's pandering to the fringe:

Yesterday we posted video of James Dobson's remarks at the recent Council For National Policy meeting, so we were aware of the meeting took place, but didn't know where it was held.

W. Gardner Selby of the Austin America-Statesmen reports that it was held in Austin, Texas and that RNC Chairman Michael Steele was in attendance

The only way to deal with this now is to elect another Chairperson who won't go running to the very people ruining this party. I was hopeful about Steele, but that hope is all gone.

For all of Steele's attempts to sound street-wise, he falls flat. Maybe this is why:

Steele attended Archbishop Carroll Roman Catholic High School in Washington, D.C. While at Carroll, he participated in the Glee Club, the National Honor Society and many of the school's drama productions. During his senior year, he was elected the student council president.

Steele won a scholarship to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In his first year, he was elected class president; he was also a member of the fencing team.

I thought a beta site was a limited release to people who tested it. Not an excuse for a crappy rollout with an unprepared staff.

*sigh*

...and they keep calling and asking for $.

Technically, you are correct. In practice, however, there is a long, sad tradition of using customers - and the public at large, in the case of web sites - as beta testers, rather than go through the expense of internal testing. And even well tested software typically goes through a rapid series of bug fixes following release.

In this case, however, there shouldn't be any shortage of actual pre-testers available at no charge. It wouldn't be difficult to build a test site that was only accessible to RNC members before going "live" and exposing the site - and the party - to ridicule.

McConnell Statement on Finance Committee Proposal
from the Office of Senator Mitch McConnell

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Tuesday regarding the Finance Committee vote on partisan health care reform:

“Sen. Snowe called me this morning to let me know that while she continues to have serious, substantive policy reservations with this proposal, she wanted to keep the process moving. I share her concerns about the direction of this bill once it leaves the committee, and her call for transparency before we vote to proceed to any bill on the floor.

"The fact is, this proposal will never come before the Senate. But what we do know is that the bill written behind closed doors here in the Capitol will be another 1,000-page, trillion-dollar Washington takeover. We know it will slash a half-trillion dollars from seniors’ Medicare, add new taxes and raise premiums. That’s not reform.”

[Burns enters dressed like Jimbo]
Burns: Ahoy, there, Dean. I understand you're taking suggestions

Well, me and my fourth form chums think it would be quite
corking if you'd sign over your oil well to the local energy
concern.
Skinner: [clears throat] Mr. Burns?
Burns: Buh!
Skinner: It _was_ naive of you think I would mistake this town's most

Historic legislation to expand U.S. health care and control costs won its first Republican supporter Tuesday and cleared a key Senate hurdle, a double-barreled triumph that propelled President Barack Obama's signature issue toward votes this fall in both houses of Congress.

It's historic.

GOP sites are often bad - they seem to try to do too much. The last site they made that I absolutely hated was entitled "Republican for a Reason," and it was a pretty transparent attempt to get e-mail addresses from people.

There was a ning site called "Rebuild the Party" conceived by Patrick Ruffini and some others from RedState, but it very quickly got taken over by Paulians and various sorts of trolls from inception. What they did right was put forth blog entries that described "here's a place we think we can win, here's the background and the candidates, here's how you can get involved in this if you like" - the very practical sort of thing Kos was doing for years.

As virulent and awful as Twitter can get - there are many conservatives there that say terrible things that really should get them scrutiny from the authorities - there are more prominent Republicans who are talking with people that message them and having fun with it. Perhaps the GOP should stick with that, and leave blogging and site development to others.

re: #160 DaddyG

Perhaps a better question is: why some of the defenders of the left turn a blind eye to statements about Michael Steele that would incur the indignant wrath of progressives if said about President Obama? That I believe was Walter's point in the first place.

He doesn't strike me as the type who runs to Charles to fix every offensive post.

FWIW, the comments I'm seeing aren't about mocking Steele's race, but mocking what he has said-- his sad attempts to be 'hip'. Like "What up", the urban hiphop comment of his, the time he gave a shout out to Jindal offering him some 'slum love"-- all the horrendously tone deaf stuff. A white guy saying these things would be mocked in precisely the same way, for the same reasons. That's the difference.

Similar things said about Obama probably would be racist-- because they wouldn't be about mocking what he's said (he's said none of the above or done anything similarly tone deaf).

There are of course racists on the left as well. No one reasonable would deny that. Racism, like sexism, isn't restricted to only one political ideology. I just am not seeing it here.

re: #126 Walter L. Newton

If any of the little observations and humor that we have been attending to down this thread, in regards to Steele, was instead directed to Obama, would someone be jumping in claiming some of our comment to be racist?

As soon as we get to some of the imagery seen on the Tea Party signs, you will definitely have a point.

re: #168 Jeff In Ohio

I don't really wonder, you called me a racist. It was simple and a declarative.

Was the stuff I linked to and by extension gave my approval to racist? I'll have to think on that, but I thought it was cracking on Steele not for the color of his skin, but his complete inability to use the lexicon of hip hop slang in a contemporary, or even coherent way.

My apologies, I can guarantee it won't happen again.

I agree with your assessment of those comments. That's the thrust of the post there and the commentariat.

I already explained to Jeff that I was being sarcastic and not accusing him of anything, and I already apologized to him, since he is new and probably not aware of the way I debate points. As does Cato, I sometimes leave off sarcasm tags to put an edge on the sarcasm.
