Wingnut Blogs Greet GOP.com Launch with Deafening Silence

Blogosphere • Views: 4,766

So what does the wingnut blogosphere have to say about the totally embarrassing launch of the GOP’s new website that’s not really a website?

Hot Air: nothing.

Michelle Malkin: zero.

Ace of Spades HQ: zip.

Gateway Pundit: zilch.

Power Line: nada.

(Don’t worry — I’m sure they’ll have something to say once they’ve settled on the approved lockstep talking points.)

It’s got a gigantic “DONATE” button at the top.

At least they got that right.

What’s to say? The sources you mention have nothing to do with the GOP and the GOP web site didn’t work…

Synergy…

5 akarra  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 2:57:27pm

I’m not sure how true this is, but don’t the wingnut blogs often say things like “the tea parties have nothing to do with the GOP?” It seems like the wingnut blogs play a game: the Democrats can do nothing right, the GOP can never be extreme enough for them. I would imagine that game extends to never giving the GOP credit even if they got a really engaging, simple, not-embarrassing-at-all blog going, and certainly disowning this example of GOP incompetence as something the tea parties or white supremacist groups they support could do better.

6 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 2:57:37pm

They will say:

Evil Charles Johnson aids liberals by mocking GOP website.

Then they will defend the site in various ways…

It was beta… (I call that BTW)

It was sabotage by commie/obama geek kids

It was wonderful, what’s the problem?

7 Killgore Trout  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 2:57:55pm

Hot air had a thread in the headlines section. Most comments were goofing on Steele’s “ebonics”.

8 Sharmuta  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 2:57:59pm

Because the launch was a failure, the GOP is now also losing valuable PR in the blogosphere. It’s no surprise the right would want to keep quiet about such an embarrassment, but the loss of PR and appearing competent in the real world will only reinforce the image that the GOP is a fish out of water.

9 TheMatrix31  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 2:58:26pm

This is not the first time a site hasn’t worked properly. It’s a bit of manufactured outrage, in my opinion. What if the DNC website didn’t work right and other people jumped on it? It would be equally nonsensical.

Yeah, or like when we here called out the stupid and disgusting blogs on that site. It wasn’t on TV though.

Because a spinoff blog run by an individual on the Obama campaign site (any one could start one) is far different than the site itself.

In the first case, the most you can blame them for (and it’s enough) is not having good enough moderation, not checking enough, etc.
In the GOP case, we’re talking about teh site itself and decisions made by the actual party and those in charge of the site.

And the FAIL is just too incredibly strong not to mock— from the tonedeafness of ‘whatup’, to leaving the page for “future leaders of the GOP” blank, (!), to posting their admin login and passwords…it’s a clusterfuck of FAIL, for which I henceforth coin the neologism “clusterfail”.

When I was first married, we went to Vienna (Austria, not Virginia) for our honeymoon. When we boarded the tram, it was clear we were tourists (funny thing about luggage). As I was looking at the map of the Vienna Metro on the side of the tram, someone came up to me and asked (presumably) “May I help you” in German, to which I responded with the only thing I know how to say in German — “Ich spreich nein Deutsch”. I speak no German. I also pointed to the current station on the map, and traced the route to where I was going, attempting to communicate that I did in fact know what I was doing.

To which the nice young man responded (enthusiastically I might add):

“ACH! NO PROBLEM!”

Semi-OT: this is from last year, but stilll hilarious:

RedState Tells Readers Scoop Developers Are All Liberals, So Fork Over $25 Grand

I realize that there’s one born every minute, but in a letter to RedState readers, Erick Erickson says that their readers need to raise $25,000 in order to keep them from being overrun by a liberal plot:

The bad news: our liberal “friends” – you know, the ones who believe so strongly in free speech and open debate – have done what they can to prevent us from making these improvements, so that our influence will be minimized just as we head into the 2008 presidential primary season.

No, our Blue State buddies haven’t succeeded in stopping us from improving our website. But they’ve made it more difficult and more expensive – which is why I’m coming to you for help.

Let me explain …

You see, when we started RedState in May of 2004, we used a website program called Scoop — the same program a lot of similar sites on the left used. But, as the number of visitors to our site grew, Scoop kept crashing on us.

If we’d been a liberal website, we would have been able to fix the problem quickly and relatively cheaply. The online left loves Scoop. Unfortunately, there weren’t really any conservative Scoop developers out there to help us. We kept crashing and were out of money. We had to close down or take drastic action.

The internal logic kind of takes your breath away. As Eli says, “Wow. The Left sneakily created an online commenting platform and lured Redstate onto it, knowing that they wouldn’t be able to find enough flying codemonkeys to maintain it. Best. Ratfuck. Ever.”
But the real question is — how limitless is their contempt for their own readership? RedState is now owned by Eagle Publishing, the parent company of Human Events, Regnery, Evans-Novak Political Report, the Conservative Book Club and other conservative publishing enterprises.

According to Hoovers, Eagle Publishing had $8.3 million in sales in 2006.

When the sale was announced, Robert Bluey at Human Events wrote:

The site’s managing editor, Erick-Woods Erickson, said the new arrangement would provide RedState with the resources it needs to continue playing a leading role in the conservative movement
.

Why the hell does Erickson need to “liberal bait” his audience and flim-flam them for $25 grand?

For political sites, It often turns out that these marketing and website contracts are handed out to political and fund-raising friends rather than bid out on merit or any other procurement process. There are entire companies now that do nothing but political hosting and communication/internet handling.

The interesting story for next week will be to learn which GOP insider got this particular website launch and hosting contract.

Yes.
Whether it was GOP members or contractors hired by the GOP - the GOP is ultimately responsible for what happens.

If they hired contractors, and I’m willing to bet they did - they sure didn’t do a heck of a lot of checking out the product. For something with the potential to be as important to the R’s efforts as its website? A main source and forum for communication? Whew. Not a good showing.

This is an issue with basic website building. I’m no geek, but I can tell you that what they launched today was not ready for prime time. This isn’t an issue of moderating the site. The problem is the site.

re: #119 LudwigVanQuixote

This is utterly spot on. Of course it won’t be properly moderated.

No way. Moderation and keeping on top of the user-generated content on any site is always problematic—hugely difficult. Look at how quickly any blog or online forum comparable in size to LGF (and many far smaller) turn into cesspools. This place would be like that too if Charles didn’t work as hard as he does to moderate it. I don’t think people always realise just how much effort it takes. That’s why so many other places on the web just aren’t worth commenting at.

Much as people might want to rag on the Obama campaign, they were actually pretty amazing at handling all their web presence (and using twitter, myspace, texting, etc). And even they had a problem with the user-generated content on the official site.

The GOP site will be an epic clusterfail if what we’ve seen so far is any indication of their websavvy— and their errors have been so numerous so far that I can’t see any reason to doubt that, especially given that maintaining proper moderation is where so many other sites fall down, even when they’re otherwise well-built.

But then again, I’m bothered by people publicly making statements about someone being too fat, or skinny or ugly or stupid or nerdy, so my standards for what you should or shouldn’t be saying about someone is a bit low.

And I fail in following my own rules, as can sometimes be seen here on LGF, but at least I’m not fooling myself about what I am doing.

I don’t think you ever answered my query along the lines of ‘If President 0bama can’t get it right on a matter that would harld make the police blotter in a small-town newspaper (Sgt. Crowley being called to Professor Gates residence), why should I think he’ll get it right on other, more significant issues?’

I hadn’t seen it, but another reason not to answer that is because it’s a strawman argument. But I’ll explain why it is. It’s not analogous to pointing out that because the GOP website has so far been poorly run, it may well continue to be poorly run.

You would have us believe that Obama having been wrong once, for which he apologised, means that he can never be trusted to be right about anything, on any subject.

Come on. You don’t think he was serious, do you? He was talking about a scene from a James Bond movie, for Pete’s sake.

He was clearly using the Bond movie villain as a metaphor. He did push the point a little further with the “blowing up like a blimp” description.

This is utterly spot on. Of course it won’t be properly moderated.

Moderation is really complicated or it requires a lot of human activity (or both on a really high-traffic site).

If Charles had to hire someone to do the code that he uses, I’d estimate somewhere near 600 hours and over half a million in labor cost alone for an implementation like LGF’s based on how Charles has described it.

Good tech isn’t cheap, and the web’s gone beyond ‘my next-door-neighbor’s kid is handy with that computer thing’.

I’m convinced the traffic engineering dept in my city has as their mission statement: Create Chaos on Every Road.

The roads are actually fine. It’s the traffic signal system that is an utter and complete failure.

We could save billions of gallons of fuel every year in the USA if the lights were timed. The difference in the EPA mileage rating for a highway and city driving is not from the slower driving, its from all the stops and starts.

The “city” program is designed to replicate an urban rush-hour driving experience in which the vehicle is started with the engine cold and is driven in stop-and-go traffic with frequent idling. The car or truck is driven for 11 miles and makes 23 stops over the course of 31 minutes, with an average speed of 20 mph and a top speed of 56 mph.

It would put money in everyone’s pocket, and the drop in consumption would help bring a glut to help drive down the cost of oil. The people to do the work are all already there. All they need is a kick in the ass to go out and do it.

The GOP must be far better than most of these blogs for moderation. Present company excepted, these folks are amateurs. No Charles, I’m not outraged in the least. It does seem odd to me that any news person, in such a public position, can make any jokes about harming anyone, on air, laughing or not, serious or not. I personally don’t find that acceptable. Not outrageous, but not acceptable.

Walter - I find Matthews’ “joke” unacceptable too. I find Matthews to unacceptable generally - I don’t like him.

The person he’s poking at with that comment is in the same business he’s in - commentary, opinion, spin. Not an elected official, who is in greater danger, imo, from some idiot than a radio or TV personality.

I hope Rush stays safe. I hope Matthews stays safe. And I really hope all our elected official stay safe.

My car has a feature that shows how many mpg I’m using for each tank of gas. When I’m sitting at a series of red lights, I can watch it go own - 14 - 13.5 - 12.1 - 11.8. It’s amazing how much gasoline is wasted at traffic lights that are not properly set. I can get 24 mpg on the highway. Around 12 in the city, mostly because the traffic signals are timed to ensure that if you catch one light red, you will catch ALL of the lights red.

I don’t know if organizational sites really gain any benefit from Social Networking, tbh. I go to blogs and SNS-driven sites for these kinds of things and I think a lot of other people do, as well.

It’s complicated to do right, requires at least a full-time staff person and an IT guru on call for a smaller site. For something like the GOP site, where quote-mining is going to become an obsession for the media and for opposition candidates, then just leave it alone. The benefits don’t outweigh either the drawbacks or the cost.

Rt 2 is particularly bad because it is THE major road into Boston for north central Mass, and the stretch through Concord has a traffic light every 20 feet, it seems. Concord doesn’t want traffic, so they don’t let the road get upgraded. So they suffer the far worse fumes from idling cars.
Let’s see, I think in 10 miles, there are about 6 lights, on a 2 lane road that, as I said, is the major route into Boston for a good piece of the state.

“Intelligent failing has now been observed outside the laboratory.”

However there is still much unfinished business…

From the New Scientist magazine.

Bacteria enable us to show the relevance of ecological opportunity for adaptive radiation. “There is rapid evolution and niche specialization when the environment into which the bacteria are introduced is rich in available niches,” explains Rainey. His team grew the same bacteria in the same broth under identical conditions, but removed ecological opportunity by shaking the broth. The result: in the absence of the different habitats provided by the undisturbed broth, no new strains evolved.
