I despise the use of Nazi imagery in modern politics.
It so diminishes the actual evil that was naziism.
Sickening.

4 Almost Killed by Space Hookers  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 9:14:10pm

I lost family in the real thing.

It is utterly wrong and deeply offensive to degrade and disrespect the dead by using them as cheap propaganda for self promotion.

You have to be really sick to do that.

The only people who have a right to really talk about such things as a comparison are Native Americans, Chinese who survived Japanese atrocities, and other groups who faced massed efforts to murder them wholesale.

There is simply nothing sacred anymore.

There is no political line too base or distorted or vile to use.

Glenn Beck Compares Fox News to Jews During the Holocaust

O RLY?
How do you even let those words come out of your mouth? Are you really that much of a heartless, moronic, agenda driven imbecile?

For the record,

I'm a bit furious now.

7 peterb  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 9:18:29pm

You know, I'm not mad at Beck about this. I'm really not. Beck is about ratings. Beck is about saying provocative things to get people outrages and generate ratings because of it. He was a shock jock 20 years ago, and he's still a shock jock today. He's just a shock jock in a suit now.

What drives me nuts, what makes me furiously crazy frustrated, is the people who think they are conservatives who think this guy is helping the cause.

You couldn't discredit conservatism more than Glenn Beck is if you tried.

30 Alan K. Henderson  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 9:33:00pm

I don't think the comparing the severity of the oppression of the Jews to the severity of the oppression of Fox News. Beck calls attention to the age-old principle: don't gloat when your government steals the freedoms of a constituency you don't like, cuz such a State will eventually come around to stealing yours. Mention that principle, and almost everybody (at least in the West) will first think of the Holocaust, thanks to Martin Niemöller.

Perhaps Beck could have picked a less deadly example, like the US tax code, or that form of double jeopardy where one is tried first criminally and then civilly for the same crime. First they came for OJ...

Did I just fail to take my own advice?

Yes, Dennis Prager is a creationist. One of the only times I heard him lose his cool was when he had ID shill Michael Behe on his show, and someone called in to challenge him on his creationist views.

48 kittysaidwoof  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 9:39:07pm

Government starting to reigning in the media is a serious matter and I've been surprised how casually the concept of WH declaring its intention to attack a specific media outlet has been taken. I can't help but think that maybe somebody should have rung more alarm bells when Putin used his popularity to do this in Russia to ensure his continued popularity. We can see other modern examples in Venezuela and even Italy (it is inconceivable that Berlusconi could remain a prime minister without his control of the media).

It is probably tactless of him to invoke the holocaust (which gets invoked way too often), but people often forget that holocaust didn't just happen, it was preceded by years and years of inactivity by lots of people who in hindsight could've prevented it. Awful things rarely happen all of the sudden when it is easy to distinguish what is happening, but gradually - slice after slice - and one day you realize its too late. Isn't that the story we're told on climate change? And the story of allowing creationism into schools to mess up teaching of science?

While I think it is unlikely and I think so mostly because from afar they look too incompetent to be able to pull it off, what if WH actually manages to silence Fox? After all, leader of the free world is immensely more powerful than any news network.

My grandfather was one of the liberators of Buchenwald. He saw what the holocaust was for real.

One way or another, he is really sick. Either he really is genuinely crazy and actually believes this shit, or he has no real values with respect to politics in America, nevermind the idiotarian ones he espouses and is just another craven populist manipulator. Either way, it's a big bowl of wrong.

Keep the volume down. This used to be a board where any deviation from perceived wisdom resulted in a GAZE. It has changed a lot. What we all need to do is keep the dialog going, offer heartfelt opinions based on fact (if that's possible, if, not, on honest sincerity), accept each other as humans of different opinions and beliefs, and see if we can't have a civil discussion on events and policies that affect us all.

Don't make assumptions here. It's a big old world, and we are all players in it.

Come to think of it. Once of my criticisms of the Bush administration was that they were too passive with the media at times. They could have used an Anita Dunn from time to time. re: #111 Sharmuta

November 2008.

Ah yes the memories are flooding back...

Disappointed Republicans today announced the start of a four year "virtual bitch-in" in response to Obama's election. "Sitting in front of our computers for four years bitching about everything he does and everything that people say about him may not be the whole answer, but it's about all we can think of at the moment" said spokesperson Robert Nadir.

"With the republicans currently in such a hopeless, directionless mess, making predictions of impending Obama-doom and spinning every event in the most negative way possible is the only thing that's keeping us going." he continued. "Frankly, it's either that or take our own lives."

Lifelong republican Susan Trough thinks the right shouldn't be limited to her colleagues' virtual solution. "It's not all about packing out online discussion forums and wallowing in a swill of our own collective bile. We also encourage our members to get out there and indulge in armageddon like fantasies. Collecting guns and ammo is for these people a healthy outlet for their frustrations, and makes them feel like they're really doing something constructive for the future."

Other republicans are getting creative with the application of satire. One such - John Downer, who runs a print shop in Lynchburg VA, has come up with the idea of printing Obama's face on the inside bottom of coffee mugs. "A lot of my republican customers, like myself, have been experiencing feelings of powerlessness since Obama took office, and needed something to help them to feel politically relevant again. Now, with my range of Obama coffee mugs, every time you pour yourself a hot drink, it's like you are pouring boiling water directly onto his face. Between that and the caffeine it's a real pick-me-up."

Finally, and perhaps most radical of all, some forward thinking republicans are considering having another go with Sarah Palin at the next Election, this time as Presidential candidate. "I think we'll see her mature and be able to handle simple questions without making everyone present bite their knuckles in shame by the time the next campaign begins. This is what we call fresh thinking." says David Newlow.

Is there a source for that? I've heard it a few times now, but not an actual quote or clip.

The big Slate (?) article on Beck posted here a couple of weeks ago had some background on that. Beck spent some time growing up in a sort of yuppie-ish white town in PacNW where there were hardly any minorities, and in his own words they made him uncomfortable. I'm not sure of the root source - me posting it here is third-hand information.

The man is damaged goods on a good day. I don't count on him to really understand a damned thing about the Holocaust, or Nazi Germany in general. He doesn't even make sense when he's talking about NOW.

Of course! That's the point! Be aware that folks of different persuasions are reading your every post. Be sensitive to them. Disagree without rancor, and back up your objections with solid facts and/or life experiences. Don't be an ideologue.

((For a quick syllabus on an ideologue on the Liberal side who posted only for his own ego, see Gordon (aka Nodrog). He has his own website where he gleefully crows about his own "triumphs" in shouting down other posters on LGF. Gordon was useless to the dialog. Here, let's let a fellow follower of Eris explain Glenn Beck's tenderness. You see, he sees the fnords.

Our favorite gang of Truthers and NWO-ers were quick to find out that when it is possible to transpose the O in Fox with an AU, and that it looked great on a T-shirt as a result. However, in doing so, they were forced to remove the O, destroying a secret message. Yes, if you look reeeaaal closely, you'll see an N between the F and O, and a RD between the O and X.

According to The Illuminatus! Trilogy, the sheeples are trained to not see the word "fnord" throughout their academic years, and to use the word as an unconscious trigger for fear. Now, what happens when you have the word FnOrdX in front of you all day, sometimes five times a day?

And hail Eris and such.

He was? OK, let's see what that poem says:

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.

What has happened is that at this point only 20% of those polled say they identify themselves as republicans. Their base has shrunk by we may never know how much. And so now FOX news is left with having to resort to attempting to legitimize the LaRouchers and these crazed, bug-eyed conspiracy theorists and calling them "the sleeping giant." Notice how they wouldn't show any of the crazier and offensive signs from the 9/12 march? I think the most important thing to take away from this is that Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh et all couldn't deliver a PIZZA, let alone an election. It's just disturbing to have to witness while it's happening.

Beck was obviously invoking the poem "First They Came..." by Martin Niemöller. Whether or not you think it was appropriate in this context, he joins a long list to have done the same thing.

Well, yes, that's what he was invoking. And no, I don't think it was appropriate in this context at all.

From the 1950s on, he was a vocal pacifist and anti-war activist, and vice-chair of War Resisters' International from 1966 to 1972. He met with Ho Chi Minh during the Vietnam War and was a committed campaigner for nuclear disarmament.

Looks like most of the places they are protesting are Jewish community centers and charities. Apparently "God Hates Jews" is higher on their list than homosexuals this time.

There are a bunch of churches on that list that would be a leap of illogic to call "liberal" by any means too. The Horizon Place put on a big DI sponsored intelligent design symposium recently as far as I know. I saw big signs for it when I drove by their other location in Rancho Santa Fe.

Interesting, Gus. This might help to flesh out his biography even more:

Martin Niemöller was a German pastor and theologian born in Lippstadt, Germany, in 1892. Niemöller was an anti-Communist and supported Hitler's rise to power at first. But when Hitler insisted on the supremacy of the state over religion, Niemöller became disillusioned. He became the leader of a group of German clergymen opposed to Hitler. Unlike Niemöller, they gave in to the Nazis' threats. Hitler personally detested Niemöller and in 1937 had him arrested and eventually confined in the Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps. Niemöller was released in 1945 by the Allies. He continued his career in Germany as a clergyman and as a leading voice of penance and reconciliation for the German people after World War II. His poem is well-known, frequently quoted, and is a popular model for describing the dangers of political apathy, as it often begins with specific and targeted fear and hatred which soon escalates out of control.

Why is Beck dangerous? As I understand he is a fairly popular talk show host with sometimes loony ideas (again, all my information of him is based on clips on LGF and some other blogs), but why does that make him more dangerous than other talk show hosts with loony ideas? Based on the occasional clips I've seen, Olbermann doesn't seem any less loony, but has far more irritating manner of presentation.

As far as I can tell from across the ocean Fox News is not just Glenn Beck and the WH communications director's attack was not just about Glenn Beck, but about a whole network which by coincidence happens to be the most or perhaps the only major network critical of the most powerful person on earth. And it was not criticism of a particular story or a particular host, but a claim that the whole network is not a valid news organization. Also by coincidence this type of attack happens to be one of the ways many not so democratic political leaders have begun the process of putting a leash on the media. The next step would be to claim tax irregularities or some procedural misdemeanors or something similar.

While invoking nazis at this point seems vulgar to my fine European tastes, it seems pretty much par for the course. Poor Niemöller has been marched out in criticism of pretty much every major US policy issue at least for the last 10 years, or so it seems to me.

Why is Beck dangerous?

Glenn Beck:

(1) is encouraging, attending, and promoting the rallies of the Tea Partiers and the general revanchist protests;
(2) is actively promoting Ron Paul's goal to destroy US institutions such as the Federal Reserve;
(3) is actively campaigning to destroy whatever credibility is left of the opposition opinions to the current political party in power.

Glenn Beck is poison to the US political atmosphere.

re: #30 Alan K. Henderson

OJ murdered 2 people. You're going to cry that he was persecuted by that civil trial?

And give me a call when "they" load Glenn Beck on a railroad car that's destined for a concentration camp. Up until then, "they" haven't come for anybody.

Which would only confirm the Beckers in their paranoia.

FOX and more specifically Bill O'reilly play this game where they say "show me evidence of FOX's bias" . Yeah it's laughable. I could turn on FOX at any time of the day and watch for 5 minutes to get that evidence.

but the quick answer to that next time some fox apologist says that is to point out that FOX did not show any of the crazy signs at the 9/12 tea party event. Not one.

Their coverage of the tea parties is the evidence. You don't need to have taken a journalism course at a university to know that FOX's coverage of those tea parties was not journalism. It was advocacy.

There was a clip that surfaced from one of the latest tea parties (not sure if Charles posted it) that showed a FOX producer getting the tea party crowd all riled up - inciting them. The wall-to-wall coverage that was given to the tea parties and PROMOTED by FOX's biggest names give lie to their assertion that they played no part.

I also love how, when a rebuplican has been caught in an unseemly situation, FOX labels them as DEMS. Classy.

It's amazing. The big hero of conservatives is a guy who weeps on television.

I just have to shake my head and chuckle. I recall a certain ex-senator who ran against Obama in the Dem primary for Pres who teared up publicly and was criticized extensively by these same people for doing so. It's as if they react to current events with no memory of what they were doing 6 months ago.

357 elclynn  Wed, Oct 14, 2009 7:46:53am

One thing Beck says which I do believe is true, most Americans are fed up with both parties. Although I may not agree with everything that is said on FOX, particularly the opinion shows, I really do think it isn't a good idea for the US administration to attack FOX. It makes them look petty and whiny. It also can conceivably be seen as a direct attack on Freedom of Speech and the Press by the White House. That is also a reality to consider. Adding fuel to the fire is just proving FOX position.

If sane people are fed up with the GOP is it because of Beck and his ilk and the fact that the GOP leadership seems to pander to their sentiments. He is fed up with the GOP because he is nuts.

Also, maybe this is the first time Beck actually used the word "Jews" to describe his personal (and imaginary) persecution, but he has made the analogy all-but-explicit before.

And? My point is why all the hooplah? It just gives Beck more notoriety. When one notices all the loons who compare themselves to Jews or the Holocaust, Palestinians included, why would anyone support their statements by giving them even more "air time" then they already get. It just becomes more fuel for the fire.

Totally agree with your summation.

Beck shouts "Fire" in a crowded Theatre during a performance he hates... the crowd then proceedes to stampede the fairminded critics... all the while the critics get shut up and Beck claims Freedom Of Speech.

He does seem to get it both ways.

373 elclynn  Wed, Oct 14, 2009 10:25:49am

re: #370 brandon13
I didn't say that at all. I also didn't say criticism of Beck is unfair. But, yes, Freedom of Speech is applicable to all. Even people we don't like. Anyone, even Charles, who makes the assumption I am a fan of Beck is also yelling fire in a crowded theatre. It is an assumption aimed at my character and presumes to know whom I approve of and admire. I find Chris Matthews equally repugnant. His statement about Rush Limbaugh and someone killing him was just as ugly. I don't watch his idiocy either. And, I don't flounce.

And criticism has absolutely nothing to do with anyone's "freedom of speech." Beck is free to say anything he wants, and I am free to criticize it any way I want to.

Anyone, even Charles, who makes the assumption I am a fan of Beck is also yelling fire in a crowded theatre.

It's just my impression, based on the fact that you always turn up in threads about Glenn Beck and defend him.

re: #374 Charles

No, I actually have "turned up" in a number of threads. This one just happened to be on top. Since there are so many other issues of real importance, I just don't understand why you would give him the time of day. I've read this blog for a number of years and admired the quality of writing in the issues you have confronted. This one doesn't seem to be worthy of your style of journalism. I think your confrontation of racism, "Rathergate", and corruption in the media are important issues. This is one which I think is basically unimportant.

I am defending due process, and the Constitution that says you can't be tried twice for the same crime. Due process isn't perfect; sometimes the guilty use the system to get off scot free. But in the long run, "let's try them again if it doesn't work the first time" endangers the innocent more than the guilty.

And give me a call when "they" load Glenn Beck on a railroad car that's destined for a concentration camp. Up until then, "they" haven't come for anybody.

Didn't you actually read my comment before you excerpted it?? I I specifically stated the "coming for the ___" can be done in murderous and non-murderous ways, and that the US tax code and Beck's worries fall under the latter.

Everybody has something in common with the Nazis, but few have a lot in common. When Beck says O has a lot in common with the Nazis, call me.

If you stand up with loons, don't be surprised if you're taken for a loon yourself. It's sheer comedy attaching to Beck a "stand up for what you believe in" meme. This is the same Beck who bashed our current health care system, claiming that what we needed was more government regulation (based on his own hospital experiences), and then just months later when Obama presented a government health plan, bashed it saying that the last thing we need is more government regulation/involvement in health care.

Anyone who takes anything about "standing up for what you believe in" seriously from this guy is being played for a fool.
