The fear is crazier on the other side of the crazy.
[Link: tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com...]

The National Rifle Association is in the field with a call campaign asking recipients a rather leading question -- "Should third-world dictators and Hillary Clinton dictate our gun policy?"
Some countries are pushing to begin negotiations on a global treaty to stop such illegal smuggling, and the NRA believes that kind of treaty would take away gun rights from Americans. But those nations that want a treaty have specified that countries would have the exclusive right to regulate arms trade within their borders. That language is a concession to the United States. In 2006, the U.S. was the only country to vote against beginning treaty negotiations.

That's not a fence, that's an Apartheid wall that prevents the sand from rightfully moving freely to the parking lot.

I've heard that about grass too. Which reminds me, I need to do some yard work tomorrow.

Damn neighbors and their obsessions with their yards.

A wall.

Walls are useful... especially firewalls, as any vendor, such as Amazon, needs to keep their information from being seen by unauthorized eyes ...

Which is very important for these vendors for there are only 69 shopping days left to Christmas!

Not quite, though I wish my airbrush was working, it would get some of the bulk work done more quickly and I could work on the detailing.

Lots of the drainage system has walls that look similar to this. For the rain runoff. Yeah, when we have some. BTW, it's not safest to go into the ocean near a storm drain. NASTY bacteria build ups wash into the ocean. Best to wait a few days.

84 ryannon  Sat, Oct 17, 2009 12:33:17am

The recent series of beach and ocean scenes by Charles is highly symbolic: the primordial purity of the calm ocean (the Pacific!); the white swath of sand devoid of all human presence; the perfect, cobalt-blue sky and in the above image, the foreground vigorously bisected by the diagonal line of the wooden fence arbitrarily dividing the area into two nearly equal volumes.

There is a quiet celebration of purity here, the desire for a return to the unsullied emptiness of origins. Empty, but not undifferentiated: the fence is there as a reminder of the literal importance of lines drawn in the sand: of ethics, values and analytical categories.

As in most of Charles' beach-and-seascapes, human presence is either totally absent or reduced to a fleeting reference: there a life-guard tower (how significant in itself!); here a distant tanker, containing the nearly unattainable promise of renewal and energy - and implicitly, a reference to a sense of exhaustion and fatigue.

Charles's somewhat minimalist images reveal much more than the sparse elements they contain: here, distance speaks of profound emotion; the sparse geometry, of purity and singleness of purpose.

They are touching in their refusal to compromise. There is dignity in their refusal to render themselves more pleasing to those seeking a more reassuring representation of the world.

That IS offensive.

Southern California immigrant rights group has asked Target stores to stop selling an "illegal alien" Halloween costume it says is offensive to immigrants.

The costume features the mask of an alien with a green card and an orange jumpsuit with"illegal alien" written across the front.

I'm all for politically incorrect costumes, but 1) if you have a green card, you are not an illegal alien and 2) orange jumpsuits are what death row inmates in CA wear.

So yeah, I think that costume is hella offensive.

The costume needs to be banned.

Every word you're writing about this reinforces the idea that an orange jumpsuit = CONVICT, and therefore that the costume is propagating the notion that all immigrants, legal and illegal, are criminals and potential criminals.

No sarcasm here: we're all potential criminals. But before considering that, how about all the kids, black, white or other, who dress up in jail-bird costumes?

Of course they're not targeting a specific nationality, but the whole idea of illegal aliens has become a cultural stereotype due to the reality of the phenomenon.

Being a fair-minded dude, I have to say that I see your point, though. I really do. Imagine for a minute costumes representing 'Zionist Aggressors' or 'White Cracker Mofos'.

It's been explained why its worth 'bitching' about -- i.e, objecting to on the grounds that it's racist, bigoted, and intended to stoke anti-immigration sentiment by implying that all immigrants-- regardless of legal status-- are illegal, and that all immigrants are criminals or potential criminals.

I'm not sure it is possible to stoke anti-immigrant sentiment in SoCal. All the illegal immigrants have done a pretty good job of stoking.

The insurgent group, which seeks to impose a strict form of sharia Islamic law throughout Somalia, amputated a foot and a hand each from two young men accused of robbery earlier this month. They have also banned movies, musical ringtones, dancing at wedding ceremonies and playing or watching soccer.

Residents said gunmen had been rounding up any woman seen with a firm bust and then had them publicly whipped by masked men. The women were then told to remove their bras and shake their breasts.

"Al shabaab forced us to wear their type of veil and now they order us to shake our breasts," a resident, Halima, told Reuters, adding that her daughters had been whipped Thursday.

"They first banned the former veil and introduced a hard fabric which stands stiffly on women's chests. They are now saying that breasts should be firm naturally, or just flat."

a little something to chew on...

Cloward-Piven Scheme for Planned Catastrophe: Ominously, in 1966, Columbia University scholars Richard Cloward and Frances Piven published a theory outlining methods to destroy a healthy capitalist economy and force communist revolution. This eliminates capitalism by making impossible state budgetary demands, thereby bringing government insolvency.

Critics claim Obama's budget is an example of the Cloward-Pivin model of planned economic destruction of a functioning capitalist economy via sabotage. Outlays are so gigantic, and so dreadfully misspent, that our financial infrastructure will soon collapse. A trillion dollar tax increase and spending rising by $10 trillion dollars over the next decade is probable. If so, government default will occur, only offset by mass currency printing, which will then bankrupt the general populace. The middle class will fall. Chronic inflation will result, causing America to lose its sterling credit rating. Global financial players must dump the dollar as it swan-dives. Then, hyperinflation will accelerate, and the era of superpower America will end.

Kelly O'Connell

294 Spare O'Lake  Sat, Oct 17, 2009 5:51:24am
"Prior to the (UNHRC) vote, Col. Richard Kemp, the former commander of British forces in Afghanistan, addressed the UN session, and said that based on his knowledge and experience, during Operation Cast Lead the IDF "did more to safeguard the rights of civilians in a combat zone than any other army in the history of warfare."

Speaking on behalf of UN Watch, an independent Geneva human rights group, Kemp added that "Israel did so while facing an enemy that deliberately positioned its military capability behind the human shield of the civilian population."

He said that Hamas, like Hizbullah, was expert at driving the media agenda.

"Both will always have people ready to give interviews condemning Israeli forces for war crimes," he said. "They are adept at staging and distorting incidents."

"It is the automatic, Pavlovian presumption by many in the international media, and international human rights groups, that the IDF are in the wrong, that they are abusing human rights," continued Kemp. "The truth is that the IDF took extraordinary measures to give Gaza civilians notice of targeted areas, dropping over 2 million leaflets, and making over 100,000 phone calls. Many missions that could have taken out Hamas military capability were aborted to prevent civilian casualties."

He also noted that during the conflict, the IDF took risks by allowing huge amounts of humanitarian aid into Gaza, saying that to the military tactician, delivering aid virtually into your enemy's hands is "normally quite unthinkable."

"War is chaos and full of mistakes," added the former commander who has served with NATO and the United Nations, commanded troops in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Macedonia, and participated in the Gulf War. "There have been mistakes by the British, American and other forces in Afghanistan and in Iraq, many of which can be put down to human error. But mistakes are not war crimes."

The modern version is the beneficial crisis. The goal is not so much destruction as reformation. The policies create situations that do not have to succeed, if there is a resulting crisis, this is always seen as an opportunity to call for more policies and more control. The answer is always more government, and the blame is acknowledge for creating the mess.

This is how the EU is building their post-democratic "Europe."

Ahead of the vote, Judge Richard Goldstone himself also criticized the wording of the UNHRC draft resolution, saying it was wrong to target only Israel while failing to condemn Hamas.

"This draft resolution saddens me as it includes only allegations against Israel," AFP quoted Goldstone as telling Swiss newspaper Le Temps on Thursday.

"There is not a single phrase condemning Hamas as we have done in the report. I hope that the council can modify the text," Goldstone reportedly said.

Many capitalists believe that there is no real choice but for America to try to spend its way out of the crisis by inflating the economy.
As I understand it this has nothing to do with Marxism.

Exactly, just like for the EU the answer is always more Europe.
They set up institutions that weaken the member nations, with known complications, once things get dicey they step in with the solution, which is always more power for the EU.

Their goal is not destruction of capitalism, rather it's destruction of nationalism with the lofty motivation of ending wars. Emphasis is on "international law," the UN and various Tranzies and NGOs.

It is not a case of Marxism or Cloward-Pivan, but rather of Jean Monnet with the goal of rule by neo-democracy in which a class of bureaucrats administer laws formed by committees of trans-national experts.

We are moving towards the EU model, as are the Nations that are being transformed into Europe. It is a red herring to say we are moving towards Marxism just as it is a red herring to say the EU = EUSSR.

I'm no economist, but as I understand it, inflation is called the cruelest tax of all because it hurts folks on fixed incomes (pensioners, seniors, welfare recipients) while allowing businesses and individuals to reduce the ratio of their debts to the value of their assets.
In theory, once asset values are inflated this will provide businesses and homeowners with more room to borrow and finance spending, thereby creating jobs.

The markets are showing another vote of no confidence today, with rising concerns on more bank problems and ANOTHER AIG bailout. The federal government announced yet another new plan to save A.I.G., the third since September. So far the government has thrown $150 billion at the company, in loans, investments and equity injections, to keep it afloat. It has softened the terms it set for the original $85 billion loan it made back in September. More money for AIG is infuriating, leaving everyone asking whether it is worth it. Unfortunately, it is.

Me too. There's nothing in the linked text that suggests the objectives he quoted.

And anyway, since when has a strategy of that nature - whether public or private - ever worked? There are too many variables and unknowns. Plus the fact that Americans on every level are incredibly resilient, resourceful and market-economy oriented. We've got a wonderful thing going here, and I believe that it's going to take more than half-cocked economic conspiracy theories to take it away from us or render it useless.
