Rush Limbaugh in His Own Words

US News • Views: 6,942

As the apologists all over the right wing blogs continue to focus on one or two disputed quotes, here’s a lengthy collection of racist and/or race-baiting quotes from Saint Rush Limbaugh — all of them verified, cited and attributed: Limbaugh: My racial views? You mean, my belief in a colorblind society?

On the Nobel Peace Prize: “I think Obama’s the second Kenyan to win.”“We are being told that we have to hope [Obama] succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles … because his father was black.”

“I do believe” Obama is an “angry black guy.”

“[I]n Obama’s America, the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering.”

“Obama’s entire economic program is reparations.”

Obama is “more African in his roots than he is American” and is “behaving like an African colonial despot.”

Obama is “Halfrican-American.”

“Obama has disowned his white half … he’s decided he’s got to go all in on the black side.”

Sotomayor “a reverse racist” appointed by Obama, “the greatest living example of a reverse racist.”

Obama “wants us to have the same health care and plan that he had in Kenya” and “wants to be the black FDR.”

Latching onto LA Times op-ed, Limbaugh sings “Barack, The Magic Negro.”

“God does not have a birth certificate. Neither does Obama”; Obama “has yet to prove he’s a citizen.”

Limbaugh on Gates controversy: “Here you have a black president trying to destroy a white policeman.”

Limbaugh suggests Obama would not have acted on Somali pirates if he’d known they were “actually young, black Muslim teenagers.”

Limbaugh suggests Democrats, media believe “you can’t criticize the little black man-child.”

“The government’s been taking care of [young blacks] their whole lives.”

“The days of [minorities] not having any power are over, and they are angry.”

“[M]inorities never do anything for which they have to apologize.”

Limbaugh: “The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well.”

Limbaugh says “NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips.”

Limbaugh declares basketball “the favorite sport of gangs.”

Limbaugh invented “racial component” to Hackett’s decision to withdraw from Ohio primary race.

Limbaugh on Survivor series: “African-American tribe” worst swimmers, Hispanics “will do things other people won’t do.”

Limbaugh suggested Colin Powell only supported Obama because of race.

Limbaugh: Gates is an “angry racist.”

Limbaugh called illegal immigrants an “invasive species.”

Limbaugh repeatedly calls Native Americans “Injuns.”

Limbaugh says Democrats’ interest in Darfur is securing black “voting bloc.”

Limbaugh says that if “feminazis” had remembered to oppose “affirmative action for black guys … they wouldn’t face the situation they face today.”

Then it must have hurt even more when Obama's team (Da Bears) thumped the Steelers back in Week 2. Go Bears!

Money quote of the article:

The U.S. Supreme Court tossed out any racially-based limitations on marriage in the landmark 1967 Loving v. Virginia case. In the unanimous decision, the court said that "Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State."

30 Gus  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 3:46:17pm
OCTOBER 3--Meet Louis Beshara and his wife, Gloria Rodriguez. The Florida couple are at the heart of the drug scandal now enveloping radio superstar Rush Limbaugh. Investigators allege that the duo illegally sold hundreds of thousands of prescription painkillers from a Palm Beach-area pharmacy they owned. According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's search warrant affidavit, Beshara provided Hydrocodone, the powerful and addictive painkiller, to middlemen drug dealers like Joseph Coppola who then resold the pills to users. It has been reported that Limbaugh scored some of the Beshara pills via Wilma Cline, a former maid at the radio star's Palm Beach mansion. Beshara and Rodriguez, who each face two felony drug trafficking charges, are free on bail, though Beshara is under house arrest. (8 pages)

I knew this would happen -- after I posted the comment last night about the fact Paypal donations are not even coming close to paying my expenses, the stalker blog gleefully seized on this as evidence that I'm "hurting for money."

Actually, no -- I'm not hurting for money. The ads are more than paying LGF's expenses at this point.

However, if I were to charge by the hour for the work I do at LGF, let's just say -- I'm working pretty cheap.

If more people would donate or subscribe through Paypal, I wouldn't have to inflict so many advertisements on you, gentle readers. And I would like very much to get rid of some of them, because they're not that wonderful from an aesthetic standpoint.

First of all, I'm happy to be a part of this community. I've seen many open registration posts but have missed all of them until now.

Second, and relative to the post topic, all of the whining and self pity Limbaugh has been spewing since he was dropped by the Rams' ownership bid - as well as all of the right wingers apologizing for him - seems to undercut the primary (and most venerable) of all conservative tenets - personal responsibility.

Rush needs to man up and realize that he brought this on himself.

But doing that would alienate his core audience - people who need someone or something to blame, fear, and hate, so don't expect it anytime soon.

Obama is “Halfrican-American.”

This is the one that makes me angry. The rest just make him look like a racist idiot, but this one pisses me off. It's dehumanizing.

Every kid who's a product of biracial parents has at least one jackass on each side of the family that is hung up on the kid's "other half". Worst-case scenario is that the kid gets to go through life with a permanent identity crisis that's inflicted upon her by others.

Beside that, it's ignorant. The best evidence we have today indicates that we're all more or less cousins anyway.

Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick, even Star Trek (ffs!) addressed the problems of 'mixed-race' children with the character of Mr. Spock. That was 40 years ago, and apparently we still don't get it.

Correct and I think it is very interesting that Rush is trying to spin this as an attack on his "conservitism." I find that interesting. So is the new mantra from the Right going to be my [insert X project, buisiness, cause] was attacked and failed becase the Liberals don't like me?

I think it would be hilarious if you would follow the NPR model: Have a "pledge drive" once per quarter where you interject requests for contributions at least once in every post. Have a tiered system: $15 gets you a "basic membership", $35 gets you that plus a bumper sticker with the LGF logo on it, $50 gets you the bumper sticker plus a coffee mug, $100 gets you an autographed copy of whatever book you're reading at the moment, and so on. Museum day-passes, theatre tickets, etc.

The reactionary head explosions would be priceless, and hell... it might even work.

Limbaugh doesn't act as nasty as Savage. He's not hostile all the time nor is he quite as out there politically. Thus he's been able to succeed better, though now that may be coming to an end.

115 keloyd  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 4:42:02pm

After 21 years' occasional listening, I think he is not racist, but will do race baiting when it gets him what he wants, then play nice again when it gets him what he wants. He is a race mercenary.

Some of his rants can be excused as painfully naive and shallow, but not racist. Some rants can be excused as attempted witty political commentary with racist trappings, but ultimately not racist in intent - kind of the way Disney used swastikas and Nazi buffoons in anti-Nazi propaganda. You can squint your eyes and turn your head just right, and see how "Barrack the magic negro" could be intended to expose racist paternalistic left wing attitudes rather than be racist itself, though it remains exceedingly ham-fisted. The problem is how long can you make excuses for him until you see the underlying trend?

116 rurality  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 4:42:36pm

For years, whenever in some situation where I was forced to have my brain polluted by Rush--in someone else's vehicle or in a shop, I have found him offensive. He's been saying 'Feminazi' for at least ten years, as a woman, I find that pretty appalling and his racist stuff goes way back. I think it is interesting that it is finally getting the attention it has long deserved, but is it all due to his NFL dreams being thwarted? Rush has been a lying, racist, sexist, hypocrite since he took the airwaves as an 'entertainer', why is LGF taking issue, now. I applaud it, just wondering what the straw was.

I don't think that's right.

This was a really public rebuke from really successful people.

It's one thing when your battling your enemies (real or imagined) and get beat.

It's another when people who are supposed to be your allies publicly abandon you in the face of relatively weak pressure.

Rush has been openly race baiting ever since a black man was elected president. When you lay the quotes out like that, the quotes of the last 9 months, it's really damning. He is a yoke around the neck of every Republican. Until he is no longer their default standard bearer and kingmaker, Republicans will not be a serious party in America.

121 keloyd  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 4:54:49pm

I agree with Dark Falcon - Savage seems to drink his own Koolaid. He goes on rants about Muslims that are beyond the pale. Rush has always discerned the 'good ones' from the enemy, and never delved into Islamic religious minutae.

Savage rants about random nonsense that cannot possibly be good for business - like his dietary theories, how autism is a big scam by (in part) lazy feminist women who can't be bothered to discipline their own kids. In short, Rush has a problematic record, but Savage is worse.

The problem with this is that for years Rush himself has made a mantra out of the phrase, "words mean things". The inference one draws is that Rush is fully aware of the immense amount of baggage the word "negro" carries today. For those not following along, the word fell into disrepute during the Civil Rights movement in the 60s, and using it today (in my opinion) intentionally conjures up images of an extremely ugly period of recent American history.

In my honest opinion a race mercenary and a racist are operationally identical, and it serves little purpose to attempt explanation by way of a concurrent motive of financial gain. That's one of the best descriptions of Rush's schtick I've read. The Magic Negro bit he does is an excellent example. It's a bit like Fox (and just about every local news outlet) telling us how horrible some sex scandal is but showing us over and over again the salacious pictures to drive the point home. There's a legitimate point to the story but come on now.

150 acacia  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 7:22:40pm

re: #116 rurality

I'm not sure Rush is a racist - although as keloyd has pointed out - that really is not the point. I am however 100 percent convinced that he is a misogynist which has bothered me to no end. There's a reason he has been divorced three times. His dismissiveness of women is obnoxious.

151 keloyd  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 7:27:28pm

re: #143 goddamnedfrank

...a race mercenary and a racist are operationally identical, and it serves little purpose to attempt explanation...

I agree on the first part, disagree on the second. There are many colors in the racist rainbow. If his corporate bosses, other pundits, or political big shots want to use him/exploit him/neuter him/ostrasize him, one must first get in his head.

A smart right wing pundit would go out of his way to critisize Obama and the left but not tick off right-of-center black listeners. If he is acting rationally, he must believe it is in his interest to sacrifice a pawn to save a rook, as it were. If he benefits from more rabid wingnuts, he will do act more racist. If his sponsors tire of his nonsense, he will tone it down again. I see Rush as a modern Strom Thurmond. Ol' Strom was progressive on race issues in the 30s, then figured out he could get more fame and glory with race baiting, then in his old age, when his black constituents could vote, finally made an apparently genuine attempt to evolve and earn their respect. Both the racism and good behavior were species of self-interest for Strom - likewise for Rushbo.

152 oldegeezr  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 7:31:11pm

His bigotry has been on display for years...
His nuance is now comin’ into play...

I had been accustomed to vote for Republicans more frequently than for Democrats, but I was never a Republican and never a Democrat. In the community, I was regarded as a Republican, but I had never so regarded myself. As early as 1865 or '66 I had had this curious experience: that whereas up to that time I had considered myself a Republican, I was converted to a no-party independence by the wisdom of a rabid Republican. This was a man who was afterward a United States Senator, and upon whose character rests no blemish that I know of, except that he was the father of the William R. Hearst of to-day, and therefore grandfather of Yellow Journalism - that calamity of calamities.

The question that all should be asking is are Limbaugh's statements true?

158 nccanuck  Mon, Oct 19, 2009 6:56:52am

I'd say Rush is as racist or bigoted as Jackson, Shaprton, Gates, Obama and Sotomayor. All have race based ideologies that are presented through the message they speak or actions they do. People don't have to come out and call someone a N or honky or whatever to be classed as a racist or bigot.

159 Yashmak  Mon, Oct 19, 2009 7:10:23am

I'm glad you went to the effort to put all of this in one place Charles. It's going to be much harder for his disciples to deny with such a compendium available. 160 keloyd  Mon, Oct 19, 2009 8:23:15am

One thing is certain, the Limbaugh vs. Sharpton civil suit will be very fun to watch, if it happens. They are of similar depth, similar skeletons in their closets if you correct for their demographics. Even their weight has gone up and down dramatically. Rush is nearly deaf; Sharpton can talk really loud. They are carnival mirror images of each other.

For the low brow crowd - make a bizarro reference; for the latte sipping erudite chattering classes, they are Napoleon and Pilkington.

re: #165 Charles

Here's an example from the office of Devil's Advocacy. Donovan McNabb's performance was very mediocre when Rush made his infamous comments. We have the benefit of history to know he improved a great deal later. It is likely that McNabb was criticized by other commentators a bit more gently than a white quarterback with the same performance to date. Keith Olbermann could have made the same observation about his mediocrity and the lack of black quarterbacks, with a more gentle choice of words, and got away with it. Rush had enemies who were looking for excuses to pounce, and Rush himself chose his words in a way that could be interpreted as insensitive, racist, crypto-racist, or merely blunt. Still, the totality of his record speaks for itself.

20% of the quotes on Charles' list can be excused as bluntness or something other than racism, but for the fact that Rush's list is sooo long. This is why courts allow circumstantial evidence. Each bit can be explained away. The thing as a whole still paints a clear picture.
