Did Somebody Say ‘Registration?’

Open • Views: 5,767

Here’s a midday open thread, with open registration for a limited time. The ‘Register’ link is at the top of the left sidebar.

Read all the rules before you register, and commit them to memory. The short version:

  • Don’t register with a proxy.
  • Don’t register with a throwaway email address.
  • Don’t register more than one account at a time.
  • Don’t be a jerk.
  • Don’t be a troll.
  • Don’t be a sock puppet. Stinky Beaumont hates sock puppets. He will find you.
  • If you’re registering just to post a dramatic “goodbye cruel world” comment full of insults and drool, don’t waste your time. Nobody’s going to read it. It will be immediately deleted and your account will be blocked.
  • Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 10/18/09 4:25:07 pm:

Now closed, but I may reopen in a few minutes.

UPDATE at 10/18/09 5:34:08 pm:

Registration has reopened, again for a limited time.

UPDATE at 10/18/09 6:00:31 pm:

And that’s it for tonight, with nearly 60 registered newbies, some of whom, of course, were sock puppets. (They never stop trying.)

A registration thread immediately after a Limbaugh thread... any takers on when the first one pops up?

There'll be more socks. The stalkers have a thread up attacjing you by saying you're begging for change (despite the fact that you put paid to that rumor quite handily). They're liable to try to slip in right now to attack you. Losers.

21 freetoken  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 4:23:42pm

I see that Instapundit is still pimping for the AGW deniers. In a link to a site, in reference to current hurricane Rick, Reynolds links to a blog of a guy who is intent that the "real" scientists (over at, ahem, American Thinker) have shown that CO2 cannot be the cause for the warming of the last century.

Of all the places to which to link on Hurrican Rick (say, the NHC, or weatherunderground.com), Reynolds picks a no-body AGW-denier.

My question: How can Reynolds actually teach law at a university and not have his peers question the honesty of Prof. Reynolds? How can the students take his class and believe they will be told the truth?

Thanks! I registered about a week ago, but thought I would introduce myself. Mid-Western stay at home mom, Christian, liberal, striving for my own fiscal conservatism. I appreciate the fascinating quality of mental soup around here. Charles, you do a great job of editing and keeping the site a reflection of your own convictions. Thanks for an interesting playground!

re: #25 sattv4u2

Ha! I seen your Karma... BTW When I first registered there was no 50 comment rule, and I thought Karma was anonymous!

29 freetoken  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 4:27:42pm

BTW, that blog to which Reynolds link is also promoting Secession!

He does not say the forbidden word “secession,” but that is what he means. Will it come to that? Perhaps. The responsible states — mostly run by Republicans — cannot afford to remain affiliated with the irresponsible ones much longer.

BTW, the blog isn't even archived by Google... or else I would have posted the cache link...

This is now to where Glen Reynolds is linking. The same Reynolds who is featured at PJM, and who teaches law at a university.

Yes. But isn't considered good manners to welcome someone to the "club."

31 Charles Johnson  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 4:29:06pm

I may start requiring people who register to post at least one comment immediately after registering to introduce themselves. If they don't post a comment within an hour, their account would be blocked.

Haven't decided on this for sure yet.

This time last year we were in the final runup to the election. There was a level of delusion on most right and right leaning blogs that was hard to watch. Also a lot of unhappiness from those who weren't deluded.

He lost me a few months ago when he posted a link saying that the TARP (or stimulus) was unconstitutional. The link went to some crappy wordpress blog consisting of 2 paragraphs (maybe 8 sentences) simply making the blanket claim that it was unconstitutional. I wrote him an email asking about the link and mentioned that the Supreme Court would have to rule to make it unconstitutional. He never answered or amended his post. He should have known the legal issues involved to know it was BS. That's when it hit me that he's not being honest anymore. Maybe he never was.

A sock will just post an innocuous "hello' to ghet around it only to be revealed as a troll later

A potential good Lizard may only have caught the open reg and had time to just register with no time to post now, planning on coming on their next available free time and you would have blocked them

BTW, Out of all the bloggers of disrepute... from the vile (RSM, the VDARE crowd, etc.) to the worthless (AP, most of Townhall, etc.), none of them have had the success of Glen Reynolds has had.

Reynolds has an air of acceptability; he has Ann Althouse and Meagan McCardle fill in for him, for example.

Yet Reynolds has turned into the biggest backer of the Tea Parties, the anti-science/anti-knowledge crowd, the secessionists, etc.

I think it is past time for people to start holding Reynolds accountable.

I quit reading the comments at LGF almost entirely between Sept 2008 and Nov 2008, although not the blog. A lot of people thought McCain had more of a shot than he did. A lot of people were in denial about Palin. The mood was ugly at times. Not merely at LGF but pretty much all over the right. And it didn't make me happy to read people who were so unhappy, frankly.

re: #68 iceweasel

I quit reading the comments at LGF almost entirely between Sept 2008 and Nov 2008, although not the blog. A lot of people thought McCain had more of a shot than he did. A lot of people were in denial about Palin. The mood was ugly at times. Not merely at LGF but pretty much all over the right. And it didn't make me happy to read people who were so unhappy, frankly.

A year ago, I was in a rapidly deteriorating relationship with someone who was over the moon for Sarah Palin. He had told me he wasn't a fan of Rush et al, but I think he only said that because he knew that Rush was toxic to a center-right person like myself. As the election approached, it because clear that he had a major case of ODS. When he told me, in all seriousness, that Bill Ayers had written Obama's books, that was the end. But I still miss the guy. I started following LGF recently as therapy! It convinces me every day that I did the right thing.

160 lostlakehiker  Sun, Oct 18, 2009 5:07:01pm

It takes a lot to make something unconstitutional. Also, what's unconstitutional is to some extent a matter of opinion and a matter of the climate of the times. Is the death penalty unconstitutional? If everybody found it cruel and unusual, then it would be. As things now stand, it isn't.

The RW tends to conflate the constitution with holy writ, and takes a literal reading of both to unreasonable extremes. Both texts are written by mortals, (leaving aside the question of whether they were inspired, or just writing their own ideas). Absolute clarity of writing available only to computer code writers and mostly not even then, we shall have to puzzle out what they meant. What did their contemporaries think they meant? Etc.

This silliness intrudes even into small questions. Are red light cameras that automatically ticket people who run the right or right-turn without coming to a full stop unconstitutional? Is it unconstitutional to shorten the yellow light so as to enhance revenues?

Of course not! It's just stupid and venal. Stupid, venal government actions can perfectly well be constitutional. If the voters don't like those laws, they can always vote out of office the guys who took those actions, and put in place officials who see things their way. That is why we have elections.

If genuine thoughtful comment is required, some new lizards won't be able to read enough threads and get the pulse of this blog fast enough to be ready to put in their two bits worth within the time limit. Ahhh I have heard of intaspundit yes. I did not know that was his name though. As to edumacating him on the physics of AGW, I have enough work left here.

Think "force multiplier" my friend.

There are many of us here who will side with science over superstition.

However, Glenn Reynolds sends thousands to millions of clicks to the worst of the deniers. And, as I showed upstream, he does likewise send traffic to the tea partiers and the secessionists.

Reynolds doesn't allow comments at his site, and I have emailed him before (in vain, though not unexpectedly.)

A better approach would be to work on those with whom he does associate, who do allow comments, such as Althouse and McCardle. These two women who nominally are (non radical) feminists need to be confronted on why they are encouraging their acquaintance/friend to spread disinformation and to encourage sedition.

Correct. (as to brain pain).

I hope, with this fossil fuel use, that we get to some happy medium (probably involving a decrease in how much carbon we are putting back into biological circulation) which stops too much temperature rise yet prevents another ice age.

Because it seems to me, that the ancient carbon sequestering represented by the fossil fuels, could have over the eons put the earth into a position to generate ice ages as the Milanlovitch cycles came and went.

It seems that the earth was more temperate for a long time, and the glacial - interglacial alternations are recent. (Brittanica).

If we are lucky we will have perfect (what we are historically used to) climate then. With snowy winters in the right places, perfect for Santa Claus.

And so forth.

I think ways of getting newbies to join the conversation is a good idea. Why register if you're going to leave your account dormant for 2+ years just a post a crude message or flounce in order to get banned? If you're not really interested in being here- why register? Weird. I like the newbies to get involved.

At one point in time, some of my favorite Lizards were newbies. Like Hoops.

There are three or four at the village of the banned who are always (mis)quoting me and bitching about me. In particular, the former earth to moonbat and TFK. Then there are always a couple who pile on.

Alas I have nowhere near the following that Ice or Jimmah or Sharm or Kilgore has, but, I can keep trying.

It gets particularly intense whenever we have an AGW thread.

I think registration threads serve a great purpose for that. They're laid back, semi-open threads where we're getting to know new people and maybe talk a little politics. A much more inviting atmosphere for new people to dip in their toe. For those who are more serious, and really want to comment on articles, LGF has the entire front page and spinoffs for them to jump right in, or a topic thread will get posted later. I like the idea of making some sort of attempt to get folks to join in, and be less intimidated.

The sheriff investigating the Balloon Boy incident said Sunday it was a "hoax" and a "publicity stunt" the boy's parents hoped to parlay into a reality TV show, and promised that charges would be presented to the local district attorney's office.

Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden said the charges against Richard and Mayumi Heene would include conspiracy, attempting to influence a public servant, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and false reporting to authorities.

Some of the most serious charges each carry a maximum sentence of six years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

You are pretty well on the money, except that you need to take the feedbacks better into account and the massive deaths of plants in the oceans and on land that would scrub the CO2 into account.

In the past, there were much warmer periods, coupled with mass extinction events and very large tracks of what is presently above water being under it.

In one century, we have put out carbon in excess of what it took millions of years to sequester. If we push to the point that the bogs in Siberia and Canada go, there will be no happy medium possible. That will produce a runaway warming in which we really do loose both caps, Greenland and the glaciers.

In addition to terrible changes in growing patterns and shortages of fresh water, that also means a 200 ft. rise in sea level.

The problem is that CO2 stays up there for centuries. We are already committed to more warming through the next century even if we stopped al;l GHG production today.

If we push too far, we get to a point where all of our actions to fix the situation, still will not prevent the bogs from going. If that happens we really are totally screwed.

Ahhh, nothing annoys a scientist more than an attorney who likes to twist words that the attorney only half understands. If it would be possible to argue on the math it would be much easier. There is very little room to play games with semantics as the equations are mathematically defined. The only problem with that is that no one could follow the discussion and the disingenuous attorney banks on that when he plays his word games.

That is why it is so important to speak in strong definitive declarative statements about what we know. You just have to say flat out, that something is a lie when it is a lie and that we are certain about what we are certain about.

A quick question for the Studebaker experts, was the WW2 Weasel made by Studebaker? The Weasel was very hard to keep running because of parts failure. Being a self taught Army Ordnance parts clerk, I tried to issue repair parts for the few that were in the area. As I recall those were somewhere in the mountains near Mt Fuji operating in a rest camp.
The Weasel was I think a great idea but needed much more work to make it reliable.

re: #126 Dark_Falcon

Here's one for you, Ludwig. This article by Victor Davis Hanson is critical of your AGW conclusions while not outright denying them. How would you answer the article with a view towards convincing its writer?

Obama’s Theorems

I'll give this task a shot, since I find myself on the same side as LVQ on the AGW issue. VDH is an honorable and intelligent man, so there's a chance he can be convinced.

Take cap-and-trade legislation. We are asked to endanger an already-weak U.S. economy with a series of incentives and punishments to discourage the use of carbon-based fuels, with which — whether shale, natural gas, coal, or petroleum — America is rather well endowed.

Cap and trade is the wrong approach. If we must hinder use of fossil fuels, it would be better to just impose a plain old tax on each ton of CO2 emitted. The danger to the economy could be reduced by postponing the onset of the tax, and by encouraging construction of wind, solar, and nuclear power facilities. As things now stand, there are too many regulatory barriers. We should also coordinate our actions with those of other nations, so that we don't simply cause the production of steel, etc. to move offshore [which would result in a net increase in CO2 emissions, our reductions being more than offset by some other nation's increase.]

Why should we do anything? Because the price we may pay for inaction figures to be greater than the cost of action. We stand to lose a good deal of developed real estate in LA, NYC, Houston, Miami, Philly, etc. We don't want the tropical diseases and pests that will be coming soon to our neighborhood if the place heats up 3 or 6 degrees.

Why does the recent decade-long cooling trend not throw much doubt on the AGW theory? First, the theory never claimed that every decade would be warmer than the previous. The sun gets a vote. Right now, we're in a period of low sunspot activity, and net solar radiance is slightly diminished.

Various climate models already published before this cool spell show "scenarios" for how the world's temperature trend might go. These are like hurricane track predictions...they're all over the map, but they're still useful. These scenarios don't try to predict what will happen. Instead, they give us a sense of the range of likely possibilities. A typical run of the model yields a century that ends several degrees warmer than it started, but within that century, there will be a couple of stretches of cooling that run for a decade or two. If you were playing roulette, you'd see runs of wins, but also runs of losses, and the runs of losses would be a little longer and more severe than the runs of wins. It's the same with the climate: our extra CO2 is loading the dice, but subtly. We don't expect 6 on every roll. We just expect it 18 percent of the time rather than 16.7 percent of the time.

Maybe the breakups of various Antarctic ice shelves will convince the voters. Maybe the coming summer opening of a Northwest Passage will count for something, when it comes. Maybe careful, sober reasoning will convince the voters. Or maybe we'll have to wait until the next Katrina rolls in over new and higher levees and wets down New Orleans beyond repair, during a scorching summer with widespread crop failures. Naysayers will insist that one hot summer doesn't prove anything, and they'll be right, but if cool logic doesn't count for anything, being right won't help the naysayers.

re: #241 Dark_Falcon

Ludwig, question: How do you answer the "cold decade" argument with a view to winning over the arguer?

Well it is interesting that you say it that way.

If the person is actually making that argument in a way that can be reached, as in "I have heard about no warming... is that rue?"

Then I would say the following.

First off, the assertion is not true. If you look at data from year to year, you will see that the graph is not smooth, rather it waggles around a trend that persists over many years.

If you have a spike in one year, but the next one is a little cooler, that does not mean a reversal of the over all trend.

consider the following set of numbers:

1, 2, 0, 1, 3, 2, 4, 3, 6, 3, 5, 8, 4, 6, 9, 10, 14, 8, 11, 10, 15, 16, 13, 14

If you look at it, towards the beginning, the numbers are around 1 and 2.

Towards the end, anyone can see that the numbers are around 14 and 16.

Clearly there is a significant rise in the numbers. Clearly if you look at the intermediate numbers as well, the over all trend of the series is growth.

This is exactly what we see (as a pattern) in the climate. This is exactly what has happened. For over a century, the temperatures on the planet have been steadily rising over all.

Here is a graph from NOAA to show that this is the case.

[Link: www.ncdc.noaa.gov...]

This is direct data from both satellite and ground based and ocean based sensors, thousands of them from around the world. The data is hard to refute, just like it is hard to argue that the series above is not growing.

However, suppose that you wanted to be completely dishonest and use the data to lie to people who don't know the whole story.

You could pick the end of the series (15, 16, 13, 14) and falsely claim "aha! The sequence is clearly going down!" "We stopped growing when we hit 16!" It's just that this is false and based on a sort of mathematical con called cherry picking. The entire trend of the series has been to grow.

In the past there were spikes that went down only to be overtaken. There is no reason to assume that the trend to growth has stopped other than wishful thinking or a desire to simply lie.

This is particularly the case with AGW and world temperatures because there are all sorts of well understood mechanisms in place that assure us we will keep warming. Those physical realities did not go away when we saw the temperature spike in the past, and they have not now. In fact, they have been exacerbated and sooner or later, the numbers will grow strongly. In fact if you look at the central mean of the numbers for temperatures, spikes and all, you will see not only is the temp growing, but the average rate of growth is itself increasing.

I've seen and applaud that. But there aren't many conservatives willing to out the freaks on their side. That's what I'm saying.

Very few on either side will do that. Alan Grayson has been just as over-the-top on healthcare as Palin was, and it's been all applause from the left.

Doing my small part to out kooks on the right has helped me keep my sanity as a center right conservative for years. [RIP clownposse.org].

I'd heard about the project before, though if I had a choice I'd rather pay the extra to have my kids taught on an operating system more commonly used than Linux. Just because that's what they'd encounter around here when they grew up.

But if the alternative is no computer, obviously a Linux box is preferable to that.

It's for kids in places that have never heard of Microsoft, let alone Windows.

then further I was amazed at how easily one could fit in...I could ask questions or challenge people far brighter than myself and they were always reasonable and friendly, nobody was looking for trouble, just posting away and the legendary FNDT were a total riot...I would laugh myself to tears in those threads...some of the smartest people I ever talked to were and are here at LGF... It actually makes sense if you think about it. Every kid gets a laptop, I'm guessing the cost is 150-200 bucks. That laptop will be good for maybe five years or so. Instead of giving them paper textbooks every year you can email them a PDF or give them a disk. I'll bet in the long run it saves the school system money.

corrections jail. One of the "Dollar" retailers gave her a grant for

The laptop idea is great. The content is what matters however. If it's filled with Bolivarian revolutionary swill, what's the worth of that?

One of our prime exports in the future needs to be education, you can fit a basic K-12 education on a single chip now. Connected to the network, you can keep that content current.

Education is going to undergo great changes over the next 15 years, and the technophobe homeschoolers aren't going to be able to keep up.

With open content now appearing at several universities, you can also get a college level education minus the diploma on the cheap if you are willing to put in the time.

Ignoring the fact that the quote you're alluding to (Let them eat cake) is usually misattributed and misunderstood on top of that, I did not say in any way shape or form that the students in poor undeveloped countries should be using Microsoft software. What I did say is that if we were to start a program in America for our own kids (which would be a good idea, though probably not the most pressing educational reform on the agenda), we would probably be best served by educating them on the computers that they would almost certainly be using after they graduated. We have the luck to live a country prosperous enough that we would not necessarily have to go for the cheapest option if we implemented a laptop program.

Obviously countries that do not have that good fortune (e.g. Uruguay) do the best for their children that they can, and should be applauded for that.

The whole Presidency is a hoax. So why is anyone surprised when ordinary Americans start pulling hoaxes themselves? They're just following in the footsteps of their messiah///

Right.

sigh.

I happened to see the wife swap episode with the balloon boy family and it was comical. The father was trying to contact aliens but laughed and mocked a the psychic swap mom relentlessly. By the end of the show, he was a converted psychic believer through hypnotism and seance. He's friggin out there.

I posted it for the poll, not for the opinion piece. But you know, that is very much a reaction to years of the other side saying this. I mean, you would probably agree that unpatriotic is more of a right wing insult, right? I don't like or use it, myself. Although I'm not sure why saying a world view is due to ignorance and being brain washed by demagogues would make it less unpatriotic, if that's something you are concerned with.

On the other hand, Linux provides the opportunity to learn a lot more about computers and networking than Windows does. It leaves its guts hanging open where you can stick your hands and there and fiddle with stuff while Microsoft software is a black box..

I may start requiring people who register to post at least one comment immediately after registering to introduce themselves. If they don't post a comment within an hour, their account would be blocked.

Haven't decided on this for sure yet.

I can envision a scenario where someone has set up an email alert or something to inform them when a registration thread is happening. Maybe they hurriedly register on their mobile device, but can't get free of other responsibilities--in a meeting, rushing to the airport gate, etc.,--to post just then. I recommend giving them til the end of the day, if you're going to go that route.

Here's a good Newbie question:

What do you like to read, and who do you like to read?

And welcome to LGF!

I like to read pulpy mysteries and thrillers -- big on my list the last year have been all the Lee Child books, Randy Wayne Wright, Phillip Margolin, Brian Freeman.

I do most of my political reading online. Most of the top-selling political books come from pundits that I despise. Online, I've lurked here a bit. Wildturkeys is a quiet, cool little center-right nook. I post at darwin central under this name, but the opposition derangement has set in a little too deep for my tastes.

Recent fiction books i have utterly enjoyed (and recomend to all)-
Miachael Chabon - Yiddish Policemans Union
GeLing Yang - The Uninvited
Nancy Kress - Beggars In Spain

I re-read most Robert Heinleinns, John Grishams, Terry Pratchetts and Ian Rankins.

And welcome to LGF!

Figured I'd comply with the unofficial "post immediately" concept...

Googling my username will lead you to a favorite author - Stanislaw Lem. Fond of Jared Diamond, Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan. And I wish everyone who ever thought it was possible to bring Western Democracy to Afghanistan or Iraq would read Rory Stewart's books.

I mostly reside on the lefty side, but appreciate the civility and respect for logic and evidence I see ascendant here (e.g., AGW). I'm mostly a lurker, but might chime in occasionally. My favorite political blog ever is Obsidian Wings - precisely for the civility, wit, and high signal to noise ratio. It's been a pleasant revelation to see a similar atmosphere here, with a good cross-section of opinions. I hope you can sustain this - it's notoriously difficult...

There are a lot of brilliant posters there -- it's a lot of ex-Freepers who were disappeared by the majority creationist faction in creation-evolution threads there.

But ODS has set in hard. Every other word is now "Marxist" or "fascist" which IMO is a vast overstatement of the current threat. There was just a 30-ish page thread on Beck that is worth reading to get an idea of the current mentality.
