I heard about one of the most popular costumes this year...Ballon Boy. It's a kid wearing a box and a mylar balloon tied to the box.

My grandmother back in Brooklyn use to hand make my bother and mine costumes every year. They were always of popular characters that you couldn't get off the rack, and they were extremely elaborate. I suspect that it would cost you 4-5 hundred dollar each now a days if you had a costume made with the same quality and handiwork as she did.

I always thought the best thing to do on Halloween was pull out all of my horror anthologies and some classical and read by flashlight...best part is that sometimes the music will synch up with the story and will achieve simultaneous climax with the story...

There's nothing like the hairs at the back of your neck rising when you get to the good part and get scared or at least WTF'd by a good story.

We have a "homeless" theatre company here in Denver called "Hunger Artists" and they do a Poe readers theater every year in a historic mansion in downtown Denver.

The venue holds only about 30 people a performance, and they usually run 5 nights a week and sell out.

They really do a wonderful job of it.

My favorite costume I've seen so far was a kid at my son's cub scout halloween party.

His mom had it set up so his head came out the chest of the costume (a headless guy) and it looked like he was carrying around his own head. Had a fish bowl so it looked pretty cool..

re: #43 Walter L. Newton

cool...last year we did a radio theatre for halloween at our community theatre..

It was something written by Leonard Nimoy and the guy that played Q on Next Generation.

The Canterville Ghost, The Mark of the Beast, and A Cask of Amantillado

Second half was "The War of the Worlds" which dragged horribly, but the first three went over really well.

We had the sound effects on stage, but I wouldn't do that again, to be honest. It was a distraction.

UFO alert: police officer sees aliens at crop circle

The sergeant, who has not been named, was off-duty when he saw the figures standing in a field near Silbury Hill, and stopped his car to investigate.

However, as he approached the 'men' – all over 6ft tall with blond hair – he heard "the sound of static electricity" and the trio ran away ''faster than any man he had ever seen''.

The officer returned to his home in Marlborough, Wiltshire, and contacted paranormal experts and told them he had spotted a UFO.

Wiltshire Police has refused to comment on the incident, saying it is a ''personal matter'' for the officer involved.

Halloween is a pagan celebration designed to ensnare young innocent minds and bring them to Satan. I do not recommend this "holiday" for anyone.

Actually it's a pagan celebration cleverly tamed and tied in to a Christian holiday on the following day (All Hallow E'en = the evening before Allhallowmas or All Saints Day). The holiday is now forgotten, much like Whitsunday (Pentecost), unless you keep to the liturgical calendar as well as the secular one.

Which do you think makes more money for the ones who sell all the crap, Saint Valentine's Day or Hallowe'en? I'm serious, I have no idea.

About Galilean Nights

On 22-24 October 2009, the International Year of Astronomy 2009 Cornerstone Project, Galilean Nights, will see amateur and professional astronomers, enthusiasts and the public taking to the streets all around the globe, pointing their telescopes to the wonders that Italian astronomer Galileo observed 400 years ago.

Spread over three nights, astronomers will share their knowledge and enthusiasm for space by encouraging as many people as possible to look through a telescope at our planetary neighbours. The focus for Galilean Nights is the objects that Galileo observed, including Jupiter and the Moon, which will be well-positioned in the night sky for observing.

Moon and Planets in the Morning

Que frustrating.

Relatively new telescope, ready to go, both me and the lady of the house are eager to look at something besides the Moon and Jupiter with it (not that we mind the Moon or Jupiter, we just want to see the rest of the planets too!) but unfortunately between the weather and our crappy job schedules, we can't seem to arrange a morning in a safe, private place with a view that we can get to in reasonable time.

"I want to see Mars" she says... Well sure, there's a whole splattering of planets to see in the morning, except we're on our way to work.

Stupid work. Screw capitalism! I wanna look at stuff.

Which do you think makes more money for the ones who sell all the crap, Saint Valentine's Day or Hallowe'en? I'm serious, I have no idea.

Which is more powerful, Eros or Thantos?

Former retailer here, depends on the product you are selling.
Perfume? Valentine's day.
Costumes? Haloween.

Sure. I was wondering which brings in the most loot overall.

I'm guessing Valentine's Day because women are trained to practically de-ball a man who doesn't honor that Hallmark Holiday with dinner, a show, a diamond or something even more useless and expensive.

Is it just me, or does no one else's upding/downding refresh when the new comments refresh processes? I've also noticed it doesn't refresh if I log in after looking at a thread when I'm not logged in...

Rating numbers don't refresh when you click 'new comments'. I tried it, and on longer threads refreshing the rating numbers brings Internet Explorer to its knees and deals it a death blow.

Safari's the only browser that could handle it, and it was still really slow on threads with more than a couple hundred comments.

Yeah, the early Christians were pretty smart in moving Christ's birth (around September/October, the end of the growing season, Biblically), and moving it to the winter solstice.

For a while when our kids were little we had a elderly lady YEC baby sitter. She told the kids that Jesus birthday was actually in the Spring, not in the winter. Oh that and the fact that the globe in the toy room was a lie because the Bible said there were four corners of the Earth, so that meant the Earth was actually flat, not a sphere. I wish I had that conversation on video, my 6 year old son arguing with the baby sitter about that.

If clues about the actual date are in the Bible, I would bet she knew which passage to find it.

Most loot overall is December. It's the month retailers typically get into the "black" ink, that is. They operate at a loss for 11 months of the year, and turn a profit ( if they do at all) in December. If it's a really good year, a high profit margin area might make a 45 percent gross margin for the year. It's a really pressurized business, all profit rests in one month.
I am not sorry to be out of this business.

She's a fad. It's a variant of Rep. Bachmann's "blood oath" nonsense. Or joining an organization called Oath Keepers - to take an oath, forswearing something you wouldn't do anyway. "I solemnly swear I won't stick a knitting needle in my ear, and push hard."

The idea seems to be, that by collectively pretending that the woman is something she is manifestly not, a form of bonding occurs. The Perpetually Aggrieved Right will fasten upon her, until the next opportunity for obligatory suspension of disbelief comes along.

Portions of the so-called Left perform the same ritual with certain figures, such as Noam Chomsky. Let's all pretend that the U.S. does whatever it does - it's all bad, you know - for filthy lucre. This extends, insofar as I can tell, to pretending to believe in academic circles that his hypothetical, non-falsifiable, ever-expanding General Theory of Language with Explains Nothing is just ... so ... incredibly ... deep. Three days after he's dead, people will be falling all over themselves to disavow it. Like what happened with B. F. Skinner.

I can live without TV. My wife could not. I have a 35" TV right now but I know football, hockey, and baseball will look so much better on a HDTV.

I use the TV very seldom. I watch C-SPAN and whatever the rest of the family is watching when I walk in and sit down. We do use it for movie rentals tho.

Hearts of Iron 3 looks pretty good.

Dude, I bought it a couple of weeks back and ran it on my fairly high-end desktop - the game takes like five minutes to load up even though it's essentially a map/board game, and the reason for this is that it's, like, so incredibly in-depth and whatnot that I don't even know how to finish this sentence.

I don't know. I do whatever they tell me.

I just want my audiobooks!

*&^%

It tells me I don't have enough room, when I KNOW I do. Last time, I restored it to factory settings and viola! there was enough room. Now, I'm half-way thru a book and I'm afraid that If I restore it again, it will lose my book-mark. I don't know what to do. I also want some podcasts--there should be PLENTY of room. . . .

According to Wiki, Ayn Rand excommunicated William F. Buckley, Jr., for printing an article unmasking her fake philosophy.

'Buckley said that Rand never forgave him for publishing the review and that "for the rest of her life, she would walk theatrically out of any room I entered!"'

What an egomaniac that woman was.

Hell hath no fury...

A buddy of mine told me about a friend of his. They were going bar hopping and realized some of the bars had costume contests. His friend found a pile of leaves and stuffed his sweater with them. He entered the costume contests as a bag of leaves. He won three times. Cost of costume...$0.00.

To be fair, I think Mr. Buckley made mincemeat of her first. But in a gentlemanly way. Whittaker Chambers nailed her for having anti-values.

Where I went to college, there was an Objectivist crowd, with a newspaper. Weird stuff. Then I tried to read some of Rand's nonsense. Truly dismal. There's a saying about Objectivism: it's the tribute stupidity pays to reason.

Anyhow, I kinda forgot all about her - which didn't suck. Now she's doing the posthumous comeback tour. So a lot of horribly amusing, and amusingly horrible facts - or purported facts - about her have been making the rounds lately.

Judging from her writing, and other utterances, and the testimony of former members of her cult - she was one hideous piece of work.

I heard the too. It's supposed to be too scary for some kids.

Everything's too scary for some kids.

Other reviewers have said their kids were supremely bored by it. After all, it's a book that's, what - sixteen sentences long? Dragged out into a 90 minute experience without the addition of any content.

re: #83 austin_blue

Yeah, the early Christians were pretty smart in moving Christ's birth (around September/October, the end of the growing season, Biblically), and moving it to the winter solstice.

Well, just after the solstice, an intentional position. The symbolism is rock solid.

Not so much the shepherds, but the whole bit about the census and the Emperor having everybody travel back to their home towns. He would not have ordered his people to set off and travel in the dead of winter, but rather in the fall after the crops were in.

I see that Amazon is not offering the "Illegal Alien" costume, which is a shame.

Hallowe'en was never a tradition in Germany, although a similar tradition still carried on in some isolated villages, including our own, here on the Rhine.

But it has been re-introduced throught the US/British influence on the culture, and many people, especially religious leaders, also rail against it as being "Un-German" and "Satanic".

Great thing is that November 1st is a holiday here in the Rhineland, so kiddies can go off and party 'til they're purple...
