Barnes and Noble Announces the Nook

Technology • Views: 4,575

Amazon’s Kindle is about to have serious competition, with the new Barnes and Noble Nook E-Book Reader.

The Nook uses a similar E Ink display, but has some interesting improvements over the Kindle too, including the ability to connect to the Barnes and Noble store through Wi-Fi (in addition to 3G), a color touch screen for browsing through books, and a feature called LendMe, which lets you lend your e-books to friends for up to 14 days. The Nook also has a nice feature that the first edition of the Kindle had (but that was removed from the Kindle 2) — you can install an SD memory card to expand its internal memory.

Barnes and Noble claims that they have over one million titles ready to go as e-books, about twice the number that Amazon currently offers. And the Nook will also have applications for personal computers and mobile devices like the iPhone and Blackberry.

This new device runs Android, Google’s OS for mobile devices, which raises the possibility that Barnes and Noble may allow developers to write their own applications for the Nook.

The e-book market is really beginning to heat up.

UPDATE at 10/22/09 2:36:18 pm:

Amazon announced today that they will soon offer one of these Nook features on the Kindle; you’ll be able to sync and read Kindle e-books with a personal computer: Amazon Kindle’s Blog: Kindle for PC Coming Soon.

The Kindle blog only mentions Windows PCs — don’t forget us Mac users, Amazon!

At the point where I realized my kindle2 had 85 books on it I stopped caring about removable media and the SD slot. Sharing and the touch screen look very nice.

Best thing about the Kindle is the e-ink display and how it looks like printed words on paper without needing to use any electronic backlight. Not having to read a backlit screen was the clincher for me and still seems to be the main selling point when I show the kindle to others. Glad to see B&N using the same technology.

We took a look. We saw a Nook.

On his head he had a hook.

On his hook he had a book.

On his book was “How to Cook”

We saw him sit and try to cook

But a Nook can’t read, so a Nook can’t Cook.

SO…

What good to a Nook is a hook cook book?

The real issue is the price of ebooks, and availability, rather than the e-book readers themselves. Last time I checked most books(at least academic ones, as I exclusively read non-fiction) aren't available in electronic format, and the price difference in general compared to paper books is negligible. Which is a shame because hauling around boxes of books is a real bitch, and I have lost count of the amount of times I have been in the library and wished I could just do the equivalent of CTRL + F to find a sentence/paragraph I am looking for.

I think ebooks will become the overwhelming norm for some things. These include most textbooks, several reference books (particularly those that update regularly), almost all genre fiction (for young adult and adult), and a lot of non-fiction. There are genre in which print is just going to be better - children's books and books which display large charts, maps and diagrams being the example here. It won't happen overnight but will progress more rapidly over time.

My personal expectation is for someone to pull a variation on the gillette rule which will then have an explosive effect on the industry. The gillette rule is "give away the razor, sell the blade." It's a bit more complex but I'll give the gist. Gillette managed to do this by coming up with a significantly less expensive blade (paralleling the e-book and e-journal) AND by making a very inexpensive razor. The Kindle, the nook and even Sony's box are all Henckle Rapides - shiny and made more for a narrow audience instead of for the masses.

E-ink is relatively mature tech now. So what I expect to see is some major bookseller or publisher break the system open by providing a reader that costs maybe $50 to make and which they sell forcost. Then run a plan like this:

Purchase five e-books (at $9.95 ea) and receive this reader for free. Also, if you use this reader to purchase new books we'll give you 5% on every book for the next year.

Yes, for the first year you'll be lucky to break even. After that, though, you're selling e-books. Once you've got the readers and used them they tend to stay used.

Or so goes my expectation, anyway.

re: #16 Honorary Yooper

I doubt it. The major shakeups in the book retailing world have already happened, and there are enough people like me who would rather hold a book than read it on a screen.

I own a small specialty bookstore that I built from scratch. It really hurts us small independents when one of our good customers either dies or buys an e-reader. Enough of them die or buy an e-reader, and I have to close my doors because I can no longer pay my rent or utility bills. Another small bookstore owner in my area finally gave up after his two best customers died and another one moved out of town. And at one time, this guy was the absolute tops in our area in his specialty field.

Unfortunately, the fallout from the emergence of the superstores such as Borders and Barnes & Noble included the failure of far too many independent bookstores. The studies I saw indicated that sales at any bookstore in about a five to ten mile radius of a newly opened superstore immediately fell by 35%, and that it took a good two years for sales to climb back to the previous pre-superstore level -- assuming that another superstore doesn't open in the meanwhile. In my specialty field, it seems like one or two more of us go under every year. Sometimes it's because the owner(s) have just flat run out of money and can't keep up the struggle any more as the cost of rent and utilities goes up as well as the cost of the books themselves. Another big reason for bookstore closures is that an owner has decided to retire and simply can't find anyone dumb enough to buy the business.

And it isn't just the superstores that are killing us small independents. WalMart, ShopKo, Target and all the other discount chains carry the bestsellers at a pricepoint that the small guys can't afford to match. Heck, even Kroger's will place bestsellers in their weekly food ads at 40% off. The sales rep from one of the major houses once asked me who was my closest competitor, and laughed when I said it was the drugstore just down the street from me. But again, the drugstore was selling the paperback bestsellers at a 10% discount, and people just don't think anything at all about throwing the latest Stephan King, James Patterson or Danielle Steel into their cart as they go past the display.

Seems to me all you can do is try to offer value-add that the superstores don't. Not sure what that would be, but if you're competing on the basis of the book as a commodity, you'll have nothing but problems.

Not really. The VAST majority of Tea Party attendees were common every day people. No, they may not have known who was at the core of organizing SOME of the events, but they will soon realize that splitting the Repub vote allowing another Dem to win is not the way to get what brought them out to the events in the 1st place

Probably. It's going to be interesting to see how many races the Tea Parties will sabotage before they discover it's not a good idea.

From my earlier link

"What lessons will Republicans draw? You might think that the impending defeats in New York and New Jersey would drive home the need to broaden the Republican coalition. A candidate like Hoffman would have been the better candidate for New York's 23rd CD; a candidate like Daggett the better candidate for suburban New Jersey. Republicans have to find ways to accommodate both types of candidates and both kinds of constituencies.

But the risk is that the party will draw a very different conclusion. From the New York experience, Republicans will be tempted to draw the lesson: Always nominate the more conservative candidate. From New Jersey: We need to drive pro-environmental fiscal moderates out of our party and into the Democratic Party where they belong!"

It's going to be interesting to see what happens with the midterm elections. The Tea Parties want to get rid of most of the Republican incumbents. The establishment isn't going to throw itself under the bus. If the Tea Parties, Fox and wingnut bloggers start pushing 3rd party candidates it could be a real mess.

re: #88 Guanxi88

Seems to me all you can do is try to offer value-add that the superstores don't. Not sure what that would be, but if you're competing on the basis of the book as a commodity, you'll have nothing but problems.

I have two value-adds.

1) I've actually read a lot of the books, and what I haven't read, I've at least surfed the back cover blurb.

2) If I've never heard of the book, I hunt it down on the internet.

You'd be surprised at how rare #1 is. Before I opened my own store, I worked for one of the chains for a few years. One year, at Christmas, the store manager hired a guy and told me, "He looks like a good worker. We can always teach him what he needs to know about books later." Another time, after I'd opened my store, some guy came in looking for a book of poetry by Ferlinghetti. I said I didn't have any, but to try Bookstore A which was much more of a literary store than mine. The guy said he'd already been there and no one there had ever heard of Ferlinghetti.

#2 is pretty rare, too. I frequently hear from people that Borders or B & N wouldn't even bother to try and find the book if they didn't have it in stock.

Years ago, Len Riggio (CEO of B&N) explained that the independents could make a living by hunting down the rarer books that the chains don't carry. But how are we independents supposed to live off of a few special order books a month?

Well they had the dystopic underwater city practice Eugenics in the manner Ayn Rand might if she were a Nazi, which is of course ridiculous. Indeed, there was a nazi scientist in it, who turned out sympathetic. The bookshelves were lined with old Biology texts, including books by Dawkins, and child psychology books. That's a great example of how the loons are holding the GOP hostage. Republican strategists are terrified of alienating them, because they have a probably accurate sense that the GOP base right now is heavily dominated by angry ranters and Limbaugh/Beck followers.

This is a recipe for massive fail. If the GOP continues encouraging the nutjobs, eventually something really nasty is going to happen, and the fallout against the GOP will be tremendous.

Yes. It is pretty damned awesome.

It is the only game I've seen balances both stealth and action well. It has just the right gritty creepy feel that you would expect from the darkest corners of the Batman franchise and the play is very good on all fronts.

The graphics are superb and there is a bit of a sandbox element, but not so much that you loose what to do and get bored by just f'ing around.

I don't normally gush over games, but this is one of the best ones I've seen in a while.

BTW, so others can gauge my tastes in games... Some of my all time favs are:

KOTOR (best RPG ever iIMHO), Mass Effect (if you liked KOTOR you will like this too), Gears of War (awesome and more awesome really) Fallout series, The Wing Commander and Starlancer series, Freespace, Halo and Half life series (C'mon, he's a physicist!).

For this gen of gaming I would give high marks to (if not already mentioned):

Dead Space
Prototype
GTA (yes it is wicked)
Oblivion and Fallout 3.

I rather liked Force Unleashed, but I thought it was too short and that the light saber play was not well enough developed.

The GOP was taught a hard lesson by the 1992 Presidential election. Clinton won with a number of votes that in any other election scenario would have had him as a loser.

The GOP coalition simply can't lose any of it's fringe components and still have enough votes to win.

That is for certain.

Anybody who's looking for a real bargain The Orange Box is really cheap now. Portal is brilliant, the best game I've played in many years. When you're done with that try Team Fortress. kinda like a cartoony Call of Duty online multiplayer thing but lots of fun. I played it almost every day for over a year. Certainly got my money's worth out of that one.

There's been so little progress in games since Doom. I just can't runn down hallways and kill things anymore. I was really hoping the GTA franchise would spawn more open ended games but nobody else is running with the concept. I just don't buy 1st person shooters anymore.

Gaming is fun.a couple of times a month me and the buddies get together to play Golf on PSP.. Hot Shots 4.. It is very completive and trash talking abounds...
The cool thing about it is we take turns choosing the music selections for the night...I think I have heard every style of music the last couple of years...
Piss somebody off and he'll play Coltrane all night...Or hit's you missed for 4 hours...Or the Rolling Stones!

It was definitely a good game but I was a little let down by this latest installment. The cell phone ringing all the time really started to annoy me. It also bugged my that Niko talks about needing money in every cutscene but money serves no purpose in the game. Still lot's of fun to play. All the GTA games are great but I was hoping for a little more out of GTAIV

A lot of people think Republicans are incompetent, but they have been very successful in capturing the considerable Hate Vote, whether hate of blacks, or gays, or Muslims, or Mexicans, or women, or science, or the unemployed, or unions, or Europe, or more than half of Americans, or poor people, or non-Christians.

Bill Whittle should know better than to be supportive, even indirectly of any group spouting conspiracy theories or associating with the JBS and Ron Paul. I'm very disappointed in this. A single republican candidate who supports "card check" is not the damn problem right now.

I think he's been hanging around that crowd for too long that he forgot why he was there in the first place.

Temple University Protesters let Geert Wilders Know How They Feel

Wilders was probably expecting to be greeted with warmth and applauds but he was surprised when protesters, employing their right to peacefully assemble and protest expressed their disdain for his backward, racist and anti-Democratic drivel. To give you a rough idea of how it all went down, take a gander at Wilders favorite supporters in the anti-Muslim blogosphere: the shrieking wing-nut Pamela Geller and her best friend Robert Spencer were both crying at the fact that protesters had gathered to counter demonstrate against the fascist. Pam, in her infinite wisdom summed it all up as “pearls before swine.” Spencer reported it as an attack on “free speech.”

It goes without saying that when these two individuals agree with each other on something it’s usually false or a lie. Whenever anyone opposes their hate, they label it “censorship,” an attack on free speech, submission to creeping-stealth-sharia-jihad of the highest order and dhimmitude, but when anyone, (like these Temple University protesters) chooses to then express how they feel about the anti-Muslim hate they get all Soddy and unleash tirades of how the sky is falling and evil is taking over the world. To say the least it is a simple case of double standards: Pam and Bob if you cant take the medicine then don’t try to dish it out.

This is a recipe for massive fail. If the GOP continues encouraging the nutjobs, eventually something really nasty is going to happen, and the fallout against the GOP will be tremendous.

Also, the GOP is failing to counter a major Democratic strategy - the co-opting of major planks from the traditional Conservative platform by an increasing number of Dems. Let's face it: if it weren't for the Blue Dogs, there would be absolutely no Conservative voice in Congress right now that carried any weight.

Meanwhile, the GOP is glomming on to social "conservatism" which isn't anything like Conservative in ideology - it is, from top to bottom, a major intrusion of government into people's private lives, as evidenced by everything from opposition to gay marriage through an outright ban on abortion under any circumstances to the hideous, evil Terry Schiavo fiasco perpetrated by Tom Delay. This is a recipe for failure.

While the country becomes more and more conservative with the passage of time, the GOP is abandoning Conservatism as fast as it can, ceding ground to the Democrats and alienating voters by adopting Bircherism and theocracy as rotten, crumbling planks in their platform.

I don't think it means the end of the GOP. But it heralds a long period in the wilderness in the offing.

Oh - and good to see there's competition in the eBook world. My price point is somewhere between fifty and a hundred bucks.

They really ought to consider giving them away, or heavily subsidizing the cost of the hardware; the real money is in the endless supply of content. And sooner or later, someone's going to upload all that public domain content Amazon is pushing to the Internet, Twitterize it or something, and completely commoditize delivery so you'll be able to receive content on a whole host of devices.

In some libraries, for some books, yes. It's still a work in progress for most ILS (Integrated Library System - catalog, circulation, etc) vendors.

That "lend" mechanism in the nook is an example of how it works.

Yes it is, and there's far more to come.

Just read an article somewhere yesterday. Another company, whose name I can't recall-is coming out with one. It mentioned that there are a number of other companies are planning products. One I think was ASUS--which I would remember--because I have an ASUS netbook.

The article suggested there might be a coming price war.

Are all these things going to be compatible? Are there format differences?

The great thing would be the space you could save--the down side is, I often buy books very cheaply off the Amazon Marketplace. I got it for a few bucks plus shipping. Still far cheaper than the Kindle version.
