Unless they get a handle on the twitter, digg, reddit, fark, facebook etc. etc. of the interweb they're toast.

I think they'll catch on. My hopeful thinking is that sometimes you let them just do their thing and fail, then the right people step in and make things right.

Tom Metzger - Tactics

During his years of activism, Metzger has been adept at using several kinds of media to spread his message, including a monthly Internet-based newspaper, radio and television shows and appearances, videos, books, stickers, cartoons, a telephone hotline, a Web site, and an e-mail newsletter.

For all those who bring up William F. Buckley, Jr., as the paragon of what the GOP should be, may I remind you that he gave a vigorous defense of McCarthyism as "a movement around which men of good will and stern morality can close ranks".

I don't know whether or not he ever repudiated that, as he did, to his credit, his views on segregation.

All I'm sayin' is, he wasn't all that.

33 wrenchwench  Thu, Oct 22, 2009 5:27:55pm

This pic is about this organization.

Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) is the continuation of Students for Ron Paul (SFP). In less than 8 months, SFP established over 500 college and high school chapters in all 50 states and over 26,000 students joined the Ron Paul 2008 campaign.

With this network, YAL seeks to recruit, train, educate, and mobilize students on the ideals of liberty and the Constitution. This is not a new beginning but a continuation of a youth movement already brewing in this country. Our objective is to facilitate its success.

Not exactly meant to build the Republican Party.

However, if you're introspecting and trying to do housecleaning, it can be a helpful exercise to put things into perspective. My lawn is doing terrible. That sucks. But, most of the lawns around me are doing terrible - it didn't rain all summer. Doesn't make my yard any better off, but it does put it into perspective w/r/t what I'm up against.

I'm not sure how accurate this account is, but it does seem to give a somewhat nuanced view of WFB's views on McCarthy. As much as I've always respected Buckley, if he supported McCarthyism, I'd would have to part ways on that. It was as unAmerican as what it purported to fight.

The photo of McCain at the Western Wall is in my opinion the most troubling one of the lot. By itself the photograph is not anti-Semitic, it is pro-Israel and illustrates the strong US - Israel bond. The message is then transformed and perverted by the caption "McCain - Zionism" into an ambivalent-at-best statement that the GOP's candidate was/is in the pocket of an alien ideology.
Beyond the anti-Semitic subtext, the photo also broadcasts the internecine backstabbing within the GOP, and does so on their official website.
An evil and self-destructive combo platter.

65 akarra  Thu, Oct 22, 2009 5:42:15pm

I sometimes wonder if the GOP actually is concerned about what happens online. This latest website is only their most recent misadventure, and they do seem to be at a distance from the right-wing blogosphere for better or worse.

"Uhh, send this Charles guy an electronic mail saying thanks. You know how to send electronic mail?"

I used to work for a company where if the boss wanted to send an e-mail, he would either fax over a handwritten copy, or dictate to me over the phone. I would type it up and send it out. Then when his messages came in, I would print them out and fax them to him.

It was a peculiar method, but it basically worked.

Leftist President Hugo Chavez called on Venezuelans on Wednesday to stop singing in the shower and to wash in three minutes because the oil-exporting nation is having problems supplying water and electricity.

Venezuela has suffered several serious blackouts in the past year because of rapidly growing demand and under-investment, which has been aggravated by a drop in water levels in hydroelectric dams that provide most of its energy.

Chavez announced energy-saving measures and said he would create a ministry to deal with the electricity shortages, which have affected the image of his socialist revolution before legislative elections due in 2010.

Calling for water conservation, he said low rainfall caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon meant water levels were critically low in the El Guri reservoir, one of the world's largest dams.

"Some people sing in the shower, in the shower half an hour. No kids, three minutes is more than enough. I've counted, three minutes, and I don't stink," he said during a televised Cabinet meeting.

"If you are going to lie back, in the bath, with the soap and you turn on the what's it called, the Jacuzzi ... imagine that, what kind of communism is that? We're not in times of Jacuzzi," he said, to laughter from his ministers.

re: #98 Charles

Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann are apparently going to endorse third-party candidate Doug Hoffman in the New York congressional election.

The GOP is melting down.

Yup:

"The people of the 23rd Congressional District of New York are ready to shake things up, and Doug Hoffman is coming on strong as Election Day approaches! He needs our help now.

The votes of every member of Congress affect every American, so it's important for all of us to pay attention to this important Congressional campaign in upstate New York. I am very pleased to announce my support for Doug Hoffman in his fight to be the next Representative from New York's 23rd Congressional district. It's my honor to endorse Doug and to do what I can to help him win, including having my political action committee, SarahPAC, donate to his campaign the maximum contribution allowed by law.

Our nation is at a crossroads, and this is once again a "time for choosing."

The federal government borrows, spends, and prints too much money, while our national debt hits a record high. Government is growing while the private sector is shrinking, and unemployment is on the rise. Doug Hoffman is committed to ending the reckless spending in Washington, D.C. and the massive increase in the size and scope of the federal government. He is also fully committed to supporting our men and women in uniform as they seek to honorably complete their missions overseas.

And best of all, Doug Hoffman has not been anointed by any political machine.

Doug Hoffman stands for the principles that all Republicans should share: smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense, and a commitment to individual liberty.

Political parties must stand for something. When Republicans were in the wilderness in the late 1970s, Ronald Reagan knew that the doctrine of "blurring the lines" between parties was not an appropriate way to win elections. Unfortunately, the Republican Party today has decided to choose a candidate who more than blurs the lines, and there is no real difference between the Democrat and the Republican in this race. This is why Doug Hoffman is running on the Conservative Party's ticket.

Republicans and conservatives around the country are sending an important message to the Republican establishment in their outstanding grassroots support for Doug Hoffman: no more politics as usual.

You can help Doug by visiting his official website below and joining me in supporting his campaign:

Buckley was also a creationist.

WF Buckley was a very conservative catholic, and very set in his ways. He was a good man, had an ego the size of a house, and and intellect bigger, which is a recipe for moralistic judgments wrapped in damn near impenetrable logic that you knew was wrong, but just could not figure out why it was wrong (rhetorically speaking).
Interestingly, he softened as he got older, rather than ossifying. (I guess he was so hard in the first place, it was osteoporosis in his case).
I expect he was a bit embarrassed by his posturing during that era, which is as close to an apology as I think you'd get.

Sarah is Wrong - form a "Party Standpoint" - She is right, ideologically - remember Sen. James Buckley (C?), (R?), NY. And to bring things closer to home, a certain Republican Councilwoman from "back in the day" who was with "us" on our issues, elsewhere on hers - in an almost 70% Democrat town, "we" kept her in business with "under the radar" split tickets. It pays to have friends everywhere, and even more to be able to wield that power as an open secret. That is all.

They do not want to listen to me or read my posts. So, gentlemen, please remove this ID from the system. The GOP has been around a long time, and has had many crazy moments, no different than any other party down through the 200 plus years of our country, and just because when we get up in the morning and only see what we have been seeing, held up against decades and decades, this is just a small piece of the whole picture.

People have been warning about the premature death of all kinds of things for hundreds of years.

I've come in at the end. The Catholic Church accepts evolution, I thought. What's the evidence that WFB was a Creationist?

As for the website. The Obama campaign's website was just that - something put together during the forced march of a political campaign.

In contrast the Republican semi-website could be developed at a natural pace, taking the time to get it the way they want it, and to protect it from hacking.

The Republican site is a rather pathetic thing.

The Republicans do seem to be melting down. I take no pleasure, nor comfort in that. This sort of thing is bad for politics. So I'm not going to crow about just how bad & lame the Republican website is.

Semi-relatedly. Why do the partisans refer to the POTUS as Obama? Like the WSJ Op-Ed piece "General Whoever versus Obama" - or whatever it was called.

This usage Obama - not President Obama - is pervasive.

There's another angle. I notice on certain right-wing sites, that there is an in-group form of casual address, used for referring to their luminaries: M. Malkin is Michelle, Gov. Huckabee is Huck, etc. It's asinine. The guy who hosted the Three Stooges show on NYC TV when I was a kid was called Officer Joe Bolton - not Officer Joe. One would expect folks who want us to respect their authoritah to not enforce a phony familiarity, and not insult our intelligences. Officer Joe Bolton didn't.

Charles mentioned it, I don't know and I've never hear that, however, he was a devout Catholic (think Opus Dei level of conservativeness), and it was the 50's, so it could very well be so.
As for the Obama not President Obama, I agree, while it does not really get me (the Dems do it too, so it seems to be actually casual, rather than a dig), I do think it should be "President Obama".
