I blame Gannet and the rise of McNews for the decline in newspaper sales, not the net. In most daylies there's a huge lack of local content and an emphasis on sensationalistic stories. Sometimes I really want to know what goes on in the state legislature and there's no fucking way to find out other than to show up and watch. They cover drug shootings, missing white girls, and car crashes and that's it.

On CBS Evening News tonight I'm pretty sure they reported the decision was expected to be announced between Nov 7 and 11, which would be in line with time window I hear floated nearly a month ago.

Waiting until after the 7th definitely seems like they're holding the announcement until after the new Afghan Election - maybe it doubles as a way of pressuring Karzai to cut down on the BS this time?

What's the alternative? I see none that don't involve mass murder. We cannot allow Afghanistan to be a terrorist haven. How do you propose to prevent that without pacifying the Pashtun?

27 Bagua  Mon, Oct 26, 2009 11:17:58pm

re: #26 Dark_Falcon

The alternative is to not deploy additional troops haphazardly, improperly equipped, or without a clear objective. There is already a massive terrorist haven next door in Pakistan and Iran.

As to pacifying the Pashtun, that has been met with little success the last few times the British tried it, or even the Russians come to think of it. They are a rascally lot. Now add the elephants in the room next door and this is a quest with no chance of anything that resembles victory.

Fair enough, although I thought the original post concerned not wanting to spend too much time on a given medium.

Twitter is an enormous amount of time if you want to build a network. You can keep things restricted to a small circle, but usually there's lots of tweeting back and forth there too.

Both have their uses. But I have about two dozen ways of connecting with people and posting pictures, so Facebook isn't interesting to me. I actually dislike Facebook BECAUSE too many people use it as the defacto way of getting in touch with folks from their past. I don't actually want to be that available! I know enough friends on Twitter that it serves as a chat room, I like it. I don't want Facebook tracking my purchases or data mining my actions. Facebook is mostly for people who are not INTERNET. I just located some of RSM's deleted posts from Free Republic if people are interested. Atrios dug up a few back in 2006. Now I'm trying to update my blog with some screencaps of that baby carriage in Australia that rolled off a train station's platform and in front of an oncoming train taht was caught on CCTV...made the mistake of reading the comments attatched to the YouTube video. I.e., The mother actually pushed the carriage, the whole thing was set up by the gov't to secure funding for public works...etc etc.

I knew the comments @ YouTube were mostly stupid and vile, but it's been awhile since I've been there and I forgot exactly how stupid and how vile they could be.

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For though from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

63 Sharmuta  Tue, Oct 27, 2009 12:27:22am

Here is one for you, freetoken:

Statisticians reject global cooling

In a blind test, the AP gave temperature data to four independent statisticians and asked them to look for trends, without telling them what the numbers represented. The experts found no true temperature declines over time.

"If you look at the data and sort of cherry-pick a micro-trend within a bigger trend, that technique is particularly suspect," said John Grego, a professor of statistics at the University of South Carolina.

Yet the idea that things are cooling has been repeated in opinion columns, a BBC news story posted on the Drudge Report and in a new book by the authors of the best-seller "Freakonomics." Last week, a poll by the Pew Research Center found that only 57 percent of Americans now believe there is strong scientific evidence for global warming, down from 77 percent in 2006.

re: #63 Sharmuta

Yup... saw that... however, it is not a popular article in the denial-o-sphere as it obviously takes away one of their talking points.

In measuring physical systems the resultant measurements have, as their essential nature, two sources of unknown-ness ... the error of the measuring process itself, and the changes in the physical system itself from time A to time B.

In order to come to some understanding of the physical quantity being measured, mathematicians long ago (well, I guess we call them statisticians now...) worked out the ideas of how to quantify the unknowns in the measuring process.

Meanwhile the physicists have worked out in great detail how the universe works, at least on the scale that we experience everyday.

Both of these truths are not very welcome in the denial-o-sphere, because the answers that the universe can only give aren't in concurrence with the fantasies of desperate humans.

Naughty universe.

Here's the truth: observations confirm what physics explains - that the surface of the planet warms as the atmosphere becomes more opaque to outgoing (and thus cooling) radiation.

But...

Heard local talker Rodger Hedgecock briefly today, waxing idiotically about climate science... but what else can we expect from someone who now has articles on WND?

The ugly-o-sphere's meltdown over AGW is not unexpected, though their adamance on their own expertise in judging this field of science is a sign that it will be a long time before that crowd comes to terms with the truth.

Cato needs the Hymn to Aphrodite...

Then thou, O blessed goddess,
All in smiling wreathed thy face immortal,
Bade me tell thee the cause of all my suffering,
Why now I called thee;

What for my maddened heart I most was longing.
"Whom," thou criest, "dost wish that sweet Persuasion
Now win over and lead to thy love, my Cato?
Who is it wrongs thee?

"For, though now she flies, she soon shall follow,
Soon shall be giving gifts who now rejects them.
Even though now she love not, soon shall she love thee
Even though thou wouldst not."

Come then now, dear goddess, and release me
From my anguish. All my heart's desiring
Grant thou now. Now too again as aforetime,
Be thou my ally.

An al Qaeda-linked group has said it carried out the twin suicide bombings that killed 155 people in Baghdad on Sunday and revived doubts about security in the run-up to Iraq's elections in January.

The statement dated October 26 was posted by the Islamic State in Iraq group on a website often used by militants to announce responsibility for such attacks.

"Suicide bombers targeted the dens of infidelity and pillars of the rejectionist Shi'ite state in the land of the caliphate," the statement said.

It seems the problem isn't the Americans after all, it's anything that's not the caliphate.

But rooting for American GI's and Iraqi civilians to get killed wholesale so some genius academic can do their 'I-told-you-so! Neener neener!' dance in front of Krauthammer...well that's just as wholesome and patriotic as apple pie!

Who is rooting for people to get killed?

It's not lefties, anymore, LaZardo...they call themselves 'progressives' these days...and I know for a fact that back in 2004 they weren't openly rooting for GIs and Iraqis to get killed because every flag-draped casket that came in through Dover AFB was suposed to help John Kerry out at the polls. I had a Kerry supporter tell me as much [because this individual found out I was from Massachusetts and assumed I was going to vote for Kerry because we came from the same state]...

Polanski victim calls to dismiss case

Lawyers for Samantha Geimer made the request in a court motion filed in Los Angeles on Friday, the latest of several pleas she has made for authorities to throw out the 1977 criminal case against Polanski.

The motion said Geimer, who now lives in Hawaii with her husband and children, has suffered health problems and job worries after a media "frenzy" following Polanski's arrest in Switzerland last month.

It cited calls by CNN's Larry King, US talkshow queen Oprah Winfrey, "every" national network morning show, three Los Angeles Times reporters and "nearly every major newspaper" from the United States and around the world.

"Between Samantha and her counsel, they have received close to 500 telephone calls from media around the world seeking a comment," the motion filed with California's Second District Court of Appeal read.

"The response -- 'please leave me alone.' But they won't leave her alone."

"Calls at all hours, invade her at home, on her cell phone and at her place of employment... The victim is again the victim," the filing said.

You're absolutely right...I'm sure there's no way the left progressives in this country would ever attempt to make political hay out of servicemen killed in Iraq (living GI's wouldn't be as tragic and/or useful for their talking points).

Again...I had a Kerry supporter pretty much admit more bodybags coming back from Iraq = more votes for Teresa's gigolo to me out of the blue under the assumption he was talking to another Kerry supporter. Now...what conclusion could I possibly draw from that?

As irate as I was w/this indivdual at the time, I figured he was being more honest than the Kos's or Michael Moore's of the world.

The assumption you should have drawn was that 'the left' wanted the human cost of the war to be known. Not that 'the left' wanted people to die.

It's not necessary to always impute the shittiest, most evil motives to our ideological opponents. It also tends to alienate people who might otherwise be persuadable, or might otherwise be inclined to listen.

I don't doubt the solid integrity of the vast majority of American soldiers serving in foreign theaters. However I do reserve the right to criticize the policies of the politicians that are responsible for their deployments.

This is a distinction that tends to get hideously blurred on both sides of the aisle...

"I realize what I'm getting into . . . what people are going to say about me," he said. "I never thought I would be doing this."

'Uncommon bravery'

Hoh's journey -- from Marine, reconstruction expert and diplomat to war protester -- was not an easy one. Over the weeks he spent thinking about and drafting his resignation letter, he said, "I felt physically nauseous at times."

His first ambition in life was to become a firefighter, like his father. Instead, after graduation from Tufts University and a desk job at a publishing firm, he joined the Marines in 1998. After five years in Japan and at the Pentagon -- and at a point early in the Iraq war when it appeared to many in the military that the conflict was all but over -- he left the Marines to join the private sector, only to be recruited as a Defense Department civilian in Iraq. A trained combat engineer, he was sent to manage reconstruction efforts in Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikrit.

"At one point," Hoh said, "I employed up to 5,000 Iraqis" handing out tens of millions of dollars in cash to construct roads and mosques. His program was one of the few later praised as a success by the U.S. special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction.

It would be smarter to listen to him than to dismiss him so crudely. He's been there and seen the place. My husband says much the same kind of stuff after tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, FWIW.

'Unreliable narrarator'? How fitting that Glacies is using weasel words. Why don't you just come right out and call me a liar?

Because I'm not calling you a liar. Had I meant that, I would have said it--I've had no problem in the past calling people liars when appropriate, or statements lies. Check my archives.

An unreliable narrator is a convention in literature involving a narrator whose perceptions are unreliable. I consider you an unreliable narrator when it comes to opining on what 'the left' or 'progressives' think. I don't think you are lying; I think you're occasionally blinded by partisan and ideological hate.

An unreliable narrator is a first-person narrator that for some reason has a compromised point-of-view. In all stories with a first-person narrator, the narrator serves as a filter for the events. What the narrator does not know or observe cannot be explained to the reader. Usually, however, the reader trusts that the narrator is knowledgeable and truthful enough to give them an accurate representation of the story. In the case of an unreliable narrator (sometimes called a fallible narrator), the reader has reason not to trust what the narrator is saying.

It's a figure of speech. Thankfully, like you, I had a boy. I'd be mortified if my daughter aspired to that. Then again, look at their role models. Eeesh.

Up to a certain age, don't parents expose their kids to the role models they deem appropriate?

Adults generally react this way when very young children parade around looking sexually suggestive. I don't find that an odd reaction at all. It's alarming. Disney has a particularly bad history with this sort of thing. re: #150 theheat

Maybe I put that badly.

Coming off a recent moral panic around here centered around kids running naked and the possibility of someone taking pictures of them, what everyone seemed to forget was that the problem was adults taking pictures of naked kids, not the kids being naked.

To kids, a dress like that is just dress up. It's up to adults to be the censors, naturally.

re: #149 iceweasel

It's creepy on its own for what it reveals about what these kids are exposed to now. Childhood is pretty short as it is, and we have 9 year olds (and younger) in a full on rush to adulthood-- or rather, a weird version of what it is to be female, a hypersexualised version. Pr0n Nation.

I agree. I think it's important to remember how short lived the idea of the long childhood is in history though - not to marginalize it, but to realize how precious it is, and hold on to it all the more. I know my mothers generation, and certainly my grandparents generation had a working childhood. I'm really the first generation to have spent my childhood playing.

Ah okay. Yes, I bet that has something to do with it, but I don't think it's the only factor at play. When I was mentioning the mainstreaming of pr0n culture, I had adults in mind as well.

Housewives attending exercise classes that are pole dancing classes. Bestsellers by pron stars like Jenna Jamison. Increasing popularity of implants. Women getting labiaplasties because porn has convinced them that their labia 'look funny'. Young guys getting Viagra not because they need it, but because they think it will enhance performance. Brazilian waxes being standard salon fare now.
Just seems like there's been a mainstreaming of what we could call 'porn culture' over the last ten or so years and it's not only the kids that are affected.
I suspect the internet is probably the main culprit. Now porn featuring anything you can imagine (and several things we wouldn't otherwise imagine) is available to anyone with access to the internet. It's no longer the province of seedy bookstores or whatever.

There is something especially disturbing about the career trajectory of the female stars, though. They go straight from little girl to hypersexualised image, and it's like the whole attendant circus is part of it. The people shaking their heads and saying how awful it is, the greedy picking over of every scandal they inevitably get involved in-- it's like the cycle isn't complete until the girl/woman is totally fucked up and destroyed. Not that I want to seem like a complete pervert with encyclopedic knowledge on this topic or anything, but.. you have to take into account that the porn culture itself has changed dramatically over just a few decades. The brazilian wax custom, for instance, is pretty rare in early 90's porn. Not only the style, but the acts have changed, growing increasingly brutal. Old media studios have blamed the internet and the decreasing costs (cheap and good recorders available, starting an internet site costing very little) for a saturated market that looks for new ways to draw crowds with new shocks and thrills.
I agree with you that it's feeding into mainstream culture. Or at least mainstream culture is being as sexualized as possible. However, if porn culture itself is being transformed - what's driving it? Somewhere here is consumer choice, ultimately leading back to mainstream culture shaping porn culture.

It's a feedback loop. Or a 69?

Yeah, and it makes us old broads feel old. Geez, I remember back in the day (when we walked five miles to school in the snow) if you had a pretty face, were even a little charming, and had big knockers - the world was your oyster. Now, you have to be stapled, pulled, sucked, plumped, extended, waxed - I don't do that much maintenance to my damned car. But all this stuff has been mainstreamed, and now it's considered the norm.

228 JEA62  Tue, Oct 27, 2009 4:19:55am

Not that hard to figure out a timeline.

The administration was obviously trying to pressure the Afghans to hold elections before they announced anything, which is why Kerry was there last week - to drop the hammer of holding back the money if they didn't. Now that they have the announcement will probably come right after they're held.

Or a 69?

Agreed. My guess is that the old media studios are right about what's driving it-- essentially, people become increasingly desensitised to what's presented, so there's a quest for more. What form that 'more' takes...who knows? It changes.

Interestingly, I read something by an exFBI agent who specialised in crimes involving sexual violence. He said you could trace a pattern over the decades involving the level of sexual assault, and the kind of assault, and it tracked pornography fairly closely. Oral sex wasn't a common demand from a rapist in say 1950-- but in the 70's after the release of Deep Throat (which itself was mainstream), it became a fairly standard demand. The same has continued to happen over the decades.

(Note: this isn't to say that porn causes violence; no reputable study has ever been able to substantiate that-- but that people who are drawn to commit sexual assaults do tend to have a heavy consumption of porn, trending towards the more violent sorts. )

It's almost like travelling backwards in terms of civilisation: people attending public executions with the whole family and having a picnic or something. Humans have always liked the spectacle of violent death; it's a fairly recent development in human history that we no longer (publicly) approve.

Not that I'm an expert on this or anything...but Ted Bundy once suggested that if cops were trying to catch a serial killer, one way to do it would be to have a local theatre do a film festival of slasher movies and write down the license numbers of everyone who attended. This would obviously be unworkable as a method of investigation for privacy reasons, but he was certainly someone who knew what he was talking about when he said it would be appealing to people with a certain 'problem'.

There was a huge case in the US about this a while ago. The problem is that the teens who were running these sites were doing so for (or under the control of) child pornographers:

Mr. Mitchel was arrested in September after being implicated by Justin Berry, a 19-year-old California man featured in a December article in The New York Times about teenagers who run for-pay pornography sites, showing images of themselves transmitted by Webcams. Mr. Berry’s story prompted the hearings before a House subcommittee, and he testified in April.

For five years beginning when he was 13, Mr. Berry was enticed with cash and gifts from adults into performing sex acts in front of his Webcam. He stopped doing so in 2005 after being contacted by The Times. Soon after, he was granted immunity by the government and became a federal witness.

Virginia Man Gets 150 Year Term in Child Porn Case

There was a media shitstorm over this because the Times reporter who broke the story and talked to the boy initially had to view child porn as part of the story. It opened up a whole host of issues about the ethics of journalists and writers and investigators who work on child porn.

I'll see if I can find the original Times story about Justin Berry.

Isn't the hypersexualization of society part of what drives this, though, along with a great deal of narcissism?

I don't think so. Well, maybe the part that's outright making money of it. Otherwise I just think it's "playing doctor" by a technology that just hasn't been accessible until now. Which is why I think it'll get "worse" the more mobiles, computers and cameras spread down the ages. The opportunity will be there and the sense to understand why not to do it won't be.
Cue horrific headlines about "sexting" and whatnot.

The solution is technology restrictions and information, I think.

Like, the FBI thinks they're the only ones that can investigate this objectively, by viewing child pr0n themselves? Puh-lease. Yes, there are some fine lines to be drawn, but to prosecute someone doing an investigation is over the top.

No, it wasn't the FBI getting on these people-- it was more a debate within the media, about the ethics of having to view child porn as part of a story or investigation. I don't really recall the details.

I hate to do a House-ism, but.. you don't listen to the person suffering from an illness. You listen to the people who have had years of training diagnosing them.

Ted Bundy also "found Jesus" and did an interview before he was executed with James Dobson of Focus on the Family. He talked about sex and violence in the media as creating more like him. Dobson has been leveraging this in his political agenda for ages. Somehow, I don't trust the word of a psychopath. Meaning Bundy..

While I did agree with you earlier about a casual relationship between the content of violent porn and how sexual crimes unfold, when it comes to serial killers and compulsion driven violence, it's a different story, IMHO (especially when the insanity of people like Albert Fish predate what we would consider violence in media).

Oh, we don't disagree, actually. Bundy certainly was lying his ass off in that Dobson interview and all too happy to sign onto the Dobson script: "Teh pr0n made me do it!".

In the other, earlier comment about slasher films, he was (again) being a manipulative sociopath, and in that instance trying to convince law enforcement he had somethign to offer. But even a lying sociopath can be right once or twice a day. His point there (such as it was) was that people like him have a fusing of sex and violence, and they're drawn to material that reflects that. Not a causal connection.

Scientologists convicted of fraud

A French court has convicted the Church of Scientology of fraud, but stopped short of banning the group from operating in France.

Two branches of the group's operations and several of its leaders in France have been fined.

The case came after complaints from two women, one of whom said she was manipulated into paying more than 20,000 euros (£18,100) in the 1990s.

France regards Scientology as a sect, not a religion.

Prosecutors had asked for the group's French operations to be dissolved and more heavily fined, but a legal loophole prevented any ban.

Instead, a judge ordered the Church's Celebrity Centre and a bookshop to pay a 600,000 euro fine.

Alain Rosenberg, the group's head in France, was handed a two-year suspended jail sentence and fined 30,000 euros.

Three other leading members of the group were also fined.

I've mentioned what I think is the fundamental paradox of democracy earlier (that it either allows elements seeking to destroy it or betrays its fundamental principle), and I think this applies in part to anything promoting freedom. One-legged man steals single shoe

BRUSSELS — Police say a one-legged suspect was caught after only one shoe went missing in a store in Belgium.

An amputee was an immediate suspect when a store attendant found just one shoe missing from a shop in the western Belgian town of Maldegem.

Police spokesman Rik Decraemer said Monday authorities were alerted and quickly found the man who fit the description by shopkeepers.

The shoe was also recovered.

Seven 'Girls Gone Wild' arrested in Florida

The "Girls Gone Wild" tour bus made a stop at a bar in the town of Yulee, Florida on Friday last week, Jacksonville News reports.

A concerned citizen tipped off police after noticing the bus, which travels the country for the video series in which women expose themselves on camera.

Inside The Mill Night Club, police allegedly found men encouraging women to show their breasts so they could be filmed.

Police claimed the women were also encouraged to have their breasts spray painted in front of patrons at the bar.

In total, 16 arrests were made: seven women for indecent exposure, the nightclub owner and two "Girls Gone Wild" employees for illegally operating a sexually oriented business plus six others for disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest.

We are throwing a party at our building. I think I'll go as balloon boy. At least I'll be light on my feet!

I haven't really decided what I'm doing this year... whether I'm going with "cute" or "horrific". I do prefer the extremes. There was the one year I went as a gunshot to the head victim, complete with eye hanging out and exit wound, and lots of blood... or perhaps the one year I went as Wile E. Coyote after he caught the roadrunner (having a big gut helped that a lot)... we'll just have to see.

Have you seen this?
[Link: thelede.blogs.nytimes.com...]

Actually, I don't find this funny or clever.

I was reading a historical fiction the other day, and it depicted accurately, in 1714, a visit to Bedlam hospital and how, on the one Tuesday every month, visitors would be charged a penny to tour the facility and gawk and make fun of the patients.

I thought to myself, that was barbarian.

And then, thinking this out further, I realized nothing really had changed. We gain the same pleasure from watching the antics of people like the Heene's, evidently not mentally stable parents in the least. There are episode after episode of over the top reality shows, where all kinds of pathologies are on display every week. And shows like "Jackass" actually cheers people on, encourage them to hone their mental illness to the point of injuring themselves.

There is nothing to be proud of if you attend a Halloween function in a "Balloon Boy" costume, in my opinion. The only thing that has changed from Bedlam in 1714 until now is the fact that we now split part of that penny admission with the patients.

Don't kid yourself this is a Disney issue. It's the industry.

Disney seems to be particularly bad about it, however. See my earlier comparison with Nickelodeon, which also deals with a steady stream of young talent without churning out sluts in the process. As noted, Cyrus' issues didn't begin until after she left Nick for Disney.

I agree that it isn't limited to Disney. It's just that their problem seems more severe.

I haven't decided on what I'm doing yet. Some friends are having a Halloween/housewarming party, and I might go there. Or I can go see one of my favorite bands (The Nighthawks) at a local club. There's not a lot of kids in my nieghborhood, so when I want to do the giving out candy thing, I usually go to my brother and sister in law's house. Lots of kids in their neighborhood.

I think a lot of it has to do with the elevated visibility a Disney girl gets. In my opinion, this would be more of an indicator of an industry-wide problem of overexposure: Too much, too fast, and people start breaking down under the pressure to "fit in with the rest of glamorous society." Exactly WHY "glamorous society" has to be so out-of-touch with reality, I don't know, but there it is.

Conservatives Laugh Off Gingrich Presidential Dreams

“Newt for 2012?” wrote Michelle Malkin. “No thanks… constantly invoking Reagan isn’t going to erase the damage Gingrich has done to his brand over the years by wavering on core issues and teaming up with some of the Left’s biggest clowns.” Washington Times editorial writer Quin Hillyer wrote that Gingrich was “choking and sputtering” and had “lost touch with the concerns of the people he should be listening to.” Robert Stacy McCain, a conservative journalist whose occasional collaborator Lynn Vincent helped write Sarah Palin’s memoirs, labeled the former speaker “an unprincipled partisan hack.”

Eric Odom, a national Tea Party organizer who famously denied RNC Chairman Michael Steele a speaking slot at the April 15 Tea Party in Chicago, told TWI that he’d been “somewhat glad” when Gingrich endorsed the effort, and he’d added the “American Solutions” button to the official website. The Scozzafava had changed everything.

“On April 15, 2010, he would be one of the last people I’d ask for support,” said Odom. “I would not give him microphone time. I wouldn’t even welcome his endorsement or put his button on our website. If he runs for president, he would be in a position similar to where Dede [Scozzafava] is right now.”

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I see that Christie has retaken the lead in the latest polling that has a sample size bigger than the tip of a needle. Christie is gaining at the expense of 3d party candidate Chris Daggett, and Christie is now running a new ad linking Daggett and Corzine on their tax and spend ways. Daggett has called for an increase in the sales and use tax to curtail property taxes, but that's no different than Corzine, who did that and then found he had no money for the rebates, so stuck everyone with higher sales taxes and higher property taxes.

Despite all the negativity with Corzine, he's still in this and could still manage to pull out a win. Outspending your opponents 3-1 will do that in a tight election. A third party candidate that takes a percentage point or two of votes will make for razor thin margins come election night.

First, he tells Congress that he will veto any tax increase on anyone anywhere, as a recession is the wrong time to raise taxes. From now on the Bush tax cuts are the American tax cuts and he stands behind them.

Next, he brings in T. Boone Pickens and the rest of the American energy industry and says in his best Texas accent, git-R-done. Offshore drilling, nuclear power plants, natural gas pipelines, whatever it takes. Cut oil imports and the trade deficit in half in five years.

Third, he signs mortgage relief into law. No, not that failed program that turned CNBC’s bond market analyst Rick Santelli into a million-hit YouTube star. Instead the administration slashes mortgage rates for responsible owners and purchasers — those individuals with good credit and home equity. For once we use the faith and credit of the USA to reward financial responsibility.

Tristan Yates on the economy...exactly what BO should have done

That transformative 2009 economic agenda would have jump-started the recovery, and by now the Dow would be at least 2,000 points higher and unemployment at least two points lower. And because it wouldn’t cost a dime, tax revenues would recover and the American dollar would be a symbol of strength and optimism rather than another looming disaster.

Right now, the State of FLorida is talking about permitting drilling within 10 miles of shore to reap royaltites to the State...not sure if it will happen or not. Last week I read a link about the potential for the Chinese to drill in the Gulf of Mexico...something about obtaining a company that had previous rights to drill.

It would be a darn shame if Oil was drilled from the proximity of the USA for use overseas when we have our own needs.

I'm kind of torn on drilling. *If* oil is really a geopolitical strategic reserve like they tell us, then we should be making the other guys use all of theirs before we use all of ours.

I think technologies like green crude and deep water shale extraction will reduce the need for new drilling for hundreds of years to come. Mass scaling of these technologies is only about 5 years out.

I think this is beyond Disney, and even perhaps the role of the industry. It comes down to culture and long standing traditions of "femininity". I'm reminded of Jessica Simpson being turned down for a recording contract by a Christian record label because she was too buxom.

Women are still by and large viewed as sex objects, and it manifests itself in a variety of ways- from sexualizing little girls to thinking a buxom woman can't be a wholesome image for a Christian media company. Perhaps we'll see a change in this when women truly grow tired of it.

There's no need for such language. The Feds can subsidize the public option to any degree desired - even over 100%, paying people to accept it. The pressure on states to offer this "free" version to their constituents will be overwhelming, despite the fact it isn't free at all, or even cheap, but paid for with taxpayer wealth borrowed against the future.
