If I remember, it wasn't all that good. But, maybe the remake will wipe the slate clean and do a better job.

Some movies shouldn't be remade, other movies were so bad the first time it's hard to make a worse remake. However, the bad movies they remake are generally as forgettable as their predecessors. The difference is usually more CGI. They love to pile on the CGI.

You're being a tad optimistic, arent you? Usually the remakes are of decent pics that don't need to be remade. Or something so awful it shouldn't have been remade in the first place, let alone remade.

I liked the red train behind the hoop, with the building behind it. Very nice informal composition. But the only rust I can detect - barely - might be the basketball hoop rim itself. Percentage-wise, extremely low rust content.

I did like the post from 10/26, with the one train parked along side the tall grass. That's a really neat photo.

The original V miniseries sucked. It was a horrendously bad mishmash of The Thing From Another World, The Diary of Anne Frank and Casablanca, with wretched casting, acting and writing.

I can't imagine why anyone would even think to do a sequel, other than to bring better CGI and sexier outfits to the table. Like the original, I'm betting that the follow-on will be better watched with the sound turned off.

re: #31 SixDegrees

Congratulations, you just reiterated the burning question so many moviegoers have posed to the think tank known as Hollywood.

I've lost count of how many good movies have been ruined with trendy CGI remakes; movies that stood quite well on their own. But in the horror genre, specifically, new ideas are so few and far between it seems they churn out remakes long before the fresh date on the originals has expired. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Fog, Last House On The Left, Nightmare On Elm Street, etc. have all been inappropriately reincarnated as something worse.

I haven't seen Paranormal Activity yet, but it sounds like a neat concept, albeit heavily influenced by other "shaky cam" films like Blair Witch and its spawn, Cloverdale. But I have to take my hat off to anyone that puts together an original horror film without practicing necrophilia on the dozen similar films before it.

To be honest, I haven't seen a film that shocked or surprised me since Alien (1979), or maybe Ringu. That's one heckuva dry spell. Admittedly, I'm pretty hard to scare, and even harder to impress, when it comes to scary movies ;-)

No, you'll have to stick to train pr0n for true entertainment. Seriously, looking at old trains is better than a bad horror movie, or any other bad movie, if you value the minutes of your life you'll never get back.

BTW, I found something to dress up your place, if you're still on the hunt. This will have the ladies banging your doors down. (Warning: NSFW.) This is special: the GOP has introduced a resolution to honour the teabaggers from 9-12, and wildly inflating the crowd estimates as well:

Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) and 75 other House Republicans have introduced a resolution "expressing gratitude and appreciation to the individuals and families who participated in the Taxpayer March on Washington on September 12, 2009" -- and claiming that the Tea Party march drew many, many times more protesters than it actually did.

The resolution -- which has been referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform -- declares that "the fundamental American principles of limited government and personal liberty are under direct assault" and that "when the current trends of government expansion and freedom retrenchment are reversed, it will be due in large part to the efforts of the hundreds of thousands who marched on Washington, DC, on September 12, 2009."

The 9/12 march's headcount has been a matter of some debate, though the resolution's contention that there were "hundreds of thousands" who attended is many, many times higher than the estimates of mainstream media organizations.

Yes. I can't believe 75 Republicans have signed onto it.

Plus they're going with the Glenn Beck (false) estimate of the crowd. It's been pretty clear for a while, but the GOP has apparently completely given up and is letting its wingnuttiest, most fringe members run the show.

Collective Nutroots Wisdom: Lieberman Blocking Public Option So Israel Can Attack Iran Or Something

Cherry picking nutroots comments sections and finding antisemitism - not a neat trick. Finding the same antisemitic meme in comments across six top nutroots blogs - still not a particularly neat trick because what do you expect from Daily Kos, Wonkette, HuffPo, ThinkProgress, FiveThirtyEight, and DU? But closer!

What would be really interesting is if blogs like HuffPo had been randomly filtering Lieberman's health care calculations through an Israel prism for weeks. Then their commenters' anti-Jewish dual loyalty canards would go from being mere seething bigotry to something more like institutionalized habits of thoughts that lends themselves to symptomatic outbursts.

Wait. An insurance company does a study (link) based on what it says the bill will require (even though nobody has read the Senate bill), and it says that bill would cost Americans more? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you.

Let me be fair - industries can make honest studies. However, when an industry makes a study that supports their desire to remove or prevent restrictions and regulations on their business, it should be taken with a grain of salt. In this particular case the salt lies in the fact the study starts with the House bill but only takes SOME of the elements as assumptions.

By only taking some - by cherry picking the base assumptions - the company has made this an untrustworthy document.

Gunmen storm UN guest house in Kabul, 12 dead

KABUL – Taliban militants wearing suicide vests and police uniforms stormed a guest house used by U.N. staff in the heart of the Afghan capital early Wednesday, killing 12 people — including six U.N. staff. It was the biggest in a series of attacks intended to undermine next month's presidential runoff election.
A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the early morning assaults, which also included rocket attacks at the presidential palace and the city's main luxury hotel.
The chief of the United Nations mission in Afghanistan, Kai Eide, said the attack "will not deter the U.N. from continuing all its work" in the country. One of the six U.N. dead was an American, the U.S. Embassy said.

Indeed. More info on WellPoint here from August: Yep, I'm sure these guys are looking out for us.
WellPoint Draws Attention to Its Own Immoral Practices in Effort to Smear Health Reform

In a recent interview, NPR’s Steve Inskeep forced WellPoint CEO Angela Braly to concede her company fears that “changes in the insurance market and regulations” could cut into her profits the most. That is because, as Igor Volsky has observed, WellPoint’s business model is “antithetical to regulation,” since the company aggressively pursues healthy customers who are less likely to use benefits to pay for medical care. As the company adds healthy customers, WellPoint has made a science of finding ways to deny coverage to the sick. California regulators uncovered more than 1,200 violations of the law by the company in regard to unfair rescission and claims processing practices.

In the "you can't make this stuff up" department:

OSLO (Reuters) – A man was caught by Norwegian customs carrying a tarantula in his bag, and a further 14 royal pythons and 10 albino leopard geckos taped to his body, media reported Monday.
. . .
"Customs officers quickly realized the man was smuggling animals, because his whole body was in constant motion," Breilid told VG.

I'll be honest. Although I like the idea of universal health care I do NOT believe it can work in the United States without serious reform to the current public systems. It seems that the idea's biggest supporters in Congress are just making sure they can still keep their pockets full after such a system is implemented.

Both the Dems and the Repubs are beholden to the insurance companies-- specifically, their money. That's why Obama cut a deal with big Pharma. That's why there really isn't a need to worry that the private insurance industry will go out of business-- trust me, neither side is going to let that happen.

But the proposals so far do include some efforts to fix Medicare and Medicaid, which is one reason why the legislation is so huge and complex-- they really are attempting to overhaul the whole system.
As for what we'll actually wind up with at the end of the process...who knows. I reckon the only certainty (as usual) is that the rich will get richer.

There are too many vested interests and too many people so idologically against the idea of "socialized medicine" that they will ensure that any attempts would fail even if they get as far as being implemented.

Just imagine if they had taken the financial bailout money and used to subsidize health care in this country instead...

I suspect the insurance companies and political machines are holding each other hostage though. A universal system in the current state of affairs would still grease the pockets of politicians, with federal, state and city politicos (and their cronies in unions and other non-pharmaceutical interests) using healthcare as leverage.

Still, with a tit-for-tat in regulations and deregulation, everybody 'wins' except the doctors and patients.

It would be helpful to me to see something that I'm not sure has even been done - and that is a point by point list of what needs to be "fixed", along with various alternatives that could be used to fix those problems.

It just seems to me there are very specific issues that need to be resolved; and what we have to look at is a large and very confusing piece of proposed legislation that many people have not read. Which makes it seem to me as if they've started in the middle of the process of fixing things (write legislation) rather than at the beginning of the process (identify the problems and potential solutions).

A Good Time to Be Conservative

Even if Republicans pick up the House in 2010, the party’s big ideas and themes for the 2012 presidential race will probably not emanate from Capitol Hill.

The center of gravity, I suspect, will instead lie with individuals such as Palin and Huckabee and Gingrich, media personalities like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, and activists at town halls and tea parties. Some will lament this — but over the past year, as those voices have dominated, conservatism has done pretty well in the body politic, and Republicans have narrowed the gap with Democrats in test ballots.

True. Completely different set of cultural norms than we're used to, for them it's more about survival than doing the right thing for a government that really can't protect them.

Its worked quite well in Iraq. We turned enemies into allies by greasing some tribal palms. This was done under Bush by the way. See [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

I didn't like it when Bush did it. See what he started. We pay off pirates, Taliban, Balloon Boy families for their stupid antics, big business... we pay off everyone.

It's sickening.

But then, I know, there are people who think this is just fine.

162 lawhawk  Wed, Oct 28, 2009 7:02:01am

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I see that the Taliban/AQ have been quite busy in Afghanistan and Pakistan today, engaging in murderous terror attacks in both countries. A car bomb killed at least 90 in Peshawar, just as Sec. State Clinton was visiting Pakistani officials in Islamabad. That's no coincidence.

At the same time, a group of terrorists somehow infiltrated a UN facility in Kabul, killing at least six. The terrorists in that attack had police uniforms and then detonated suicide vests.

And who were the victims? They were largely Muslim, not that the Taliban care about such things.

re: #156 laZardo

Only because those tribes found the Al-Qaeda that moved in to be much worse than those "dastardly American imperialists." It's different from those tribes in Afghanistan that pretty much lived with Al-Qaeda since their inception.

That was true in the initial case. But from my understanding, even the local Al-Qaeda guys decided the US payed better. My point being, the US has payed for allies for a very long time. Iraqi police/Army and ANA are essentially the same thing. If anyone here has seen "Charlie Wilson's War", I'm actually friends with Gus Avrakotos's (Philip Seymour Hoffman's character), and I've seen pictures of him handing over cash to some pretty bad dudes. This has been policy to make friends in hostile regions for decades. No idea if it's ever actually worked mind you.

Well, well, well...what do we have here? People! Having a good time! People in the foreground, people in the background, people in the middle-distance!

Ok, surfers, not just people. It's a bit hazy out there and not much sun yet, but compared to Charles' previous series of deserted seascapes, it's Times Square on New Year's Eve. Either Charles has caught on and is gaming the system, or things are actually looking up: no need to banish the human race anymore, no more severe and empty existential space reminiscent of Antonioni's Red Desert period.

A welcome change that bodes well, but how long will it last?

re: #142 ryannon

Back where I come from, they call that paying the neighborhood bully not to beat you up.

Rudyard Kipling would call it paying the Danegeld:

IT IS always a temptation to an armed and agile nation,
To call upon a neighbour and to say:
"We invaded you last night - we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away."

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you’ve only to pay ’em the Dane-geld
And then you’ll get rid of the Dane!

It is always a temptation to a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say:
"Though we know we should defeat you, we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away."

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we’ve proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray,
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say:

"We never pay any one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost,
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that plays it is lost!"

I got that one beat. Picture a 165lb. Saint Bernard. I'm taking him to the beach for the very first time. He's having fun walking thru the sand, sticking his nose in the holes he's finding on the beach. I take him towards the water, and I notice a bit of hesitation. A wave crashes and rolls up the beach towards us. The dog sees this, decides he does not want his feet to get wet. He jumps 5 feet sideways to avoid the water.

All I can do is stare in disbelief and complete amazement. That was talent!

Have you ever seen a parrot terrorize a cat? The two cats here are afraid of Maisey. If they get near the cage, Maisey just has to start screaming and the noise itself bothers the cats. Most counter-insurgency tactics aren't going to work in Afghanistan. The Iraqis are used to things like jobs and infrastructure. The Afghans have been killing each other, and anyone stupid enough to stumble across the border for hundreds of years. Charles and Friends, thank you for your indulgence.

Last year there were 4, now there are none. This morning, the last living Hump pilot flew his C-47 into the final frontier. He survived the aluminum trail but old man time got him in the end. Although alert at 91, after just celebrating his 66th anniversary, he died of natural causes with his 7 kids and wife attending.

The Distinguished Flying Cross and The Bronze Star are among the many medals he earned during the war.

During WWII he flew a few times with Paul Tibets who was one of his many friends and he even played back yard football with the Kennedy’s. He traveled the world and his life was full of adventure to the end, and now he flies into his greatest adventure of all.

Just a month ago he picked me up in his Chrysler 300 and took me to lunch. He was my Dad.

The Aluminum Trail references a route through the Himalaya’s of over 500 miles where over 700 US aircraft where lost in the CBI (China Burma) theater. The personnel losses were far in excess of this number, as most aircraft had multiple crewmembers and were often transporting passengers. The US Dept. of Defense stated in 2004 that more than 500 US aircraft and 1200 crewmembers were still missing in the CBI theater from WW II, with nearly 416 Americans remaining missing in India alone. Nowhere in the CBI theater were the aircraft losses higher than on the notorious "Hump" route between US airbases in northeast India and airfields in Yunnan province of China. Many of these aircraft were never found, and their crew and passengers have been declared "Administratively Dead" or MIA.

Oh, wait a second -- in far northern communities, it's not excessive snow that causes problems...it's more the "in-between" seasons...during "break-up" in the Spring, and before the "freeze-up" in the Fall...during these times (when you can't use boats and you can't use ice roads) the communities are totally isolated...(in northern Canada, it's actually "dry/arid")...And, yes, I have (many many years ago) lived in certain remote areas up north...(not as far north as the Arctic)...

229 gonecamping  Wed, Oct 28, 2009 7:44:44am

Great vista to observe from the comfort of indoors, makes me want to toss a log in the fireplace, kick back and watch the snow from the couch.

Snow is beautiful and fun to play in, but I don't miss shovelling to get to work. The better half would like to relocate to the mountains after I retire, but I'm not sure.

That seems to be the Administration's newest tact, and I have a real bad feeling about it.

The idea of buying the Taliban off - bribing them to put down their weapons and instead focus on securing their local towns and villages is a supremely bad idea given that the rationale for the ongoing Taliban fight is far different than the situation facing the US in Iraq. It's a misreading of Taliban intentions and goals, along with culture, customs, and motivations by the Taliban to regain control.

The Taliban are not going to be eradicated. They need to be dealt with, hopefully as much on our own terms as possible. But otherwise the war is infinite.

Al Qaeda: clearly we are not interested in—or not able to—get rid of them. They are mostly in Pakistan, near the porous border. As far as I can tell there is no plan to dislodge them.

re: #264 McSpiff

The situation in Pakistan has been tenuous for years. Pakistan has two areas that are of serious concern to their national security - the Line of Control between Pakistan and India (and over which there have been numerous skirmishes over the past couple of years and several open wars since Pakistan became an independent state). Jammu and Kashmir are the key provinces in that conflict and religious tensions seem to erupt into open violence from time to time with agitators among the Islamists and Hundu groups operating in the vicinity.

A war between Pakistan and India is a pretty serious issue because both are nuclear powers.

The Taliban have maintained control over the frontier provinces along the Afghan/Pakistani border. Because of how the NWFP (including Waziristan) are administered from Islamabad (which is to say that they have largely been hands off), the Taliban have operated there with impunity until the Taliban began sending forces into Afghanistan to support their fellow thugs in the fight against the US. The Taliban - and the ethnic groups that make up the region don't really see the border as it is drawn, but as a region that they've inhabited for centuries. For the US to deal with the problem, it means dealing with the Taliban on both sides of the border. That means getting Pakistan to play along and fight the Taliban.

It's something they've largely been unwilling to do because of the significant Islamist support in the country. It makes the situation all the more difficult and the ISI (Pakistani intel) has supported the Taliban in the past. The military has had an on-again off again fight against the Taliban, but the political considerations of Islamabad have limited the fight. The terror attacks against the civilians in places like Peshawar are meant to undermine support for the continued fight against the Taliban, which would only strengthen their hand in Afghanistan.

That's why Clinton was in country to deal with the situation.

Thanks for the detailed response, and I'm inclined to agree with all of it. Especially the idea that The Taliban doesn't really view the border as, well a border. I think thats the single biggest mistake. I could be totally wrong here, but it really feels like the same mistake as Viet Nam in terms of not wanting to reach across the border. But the same time, giving coalition forces free reign in the NWFP would be disastrous for any domestic politician in Pakistan.

Seventy-one percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Wednesday morning believe the former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee is not qualified to be president, with 29 percent saying she does have the credentials to serve in the White House. The Internet Makes Us Stupid And Love Glenn Beck

Before the White House vs. Fox News entirely took over the media it looked like Cass Sunstein, head of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, was set to be Glenn Beck’s next ‘czar’ target post-Van Jones. The question remains why? (Beck initially focused on Sunstein’s overzealous animal rights beliefs, but that was likely just a warm-up to the main event, which may still be ahead of us).

In the interim the New Yorker has taken a stab at Sunstein, and it turns out a great deal of what Sunstein preaches may explain why Glenn Beck is so popular. Short version: The overwhelming amount of information on the Internet may actually be making us dumber, and more racist.

British Columbia (in Canada) has been absolutely devestated by a similar infestation of pine beetles -- all the pine trees turn red (this in turn leads to forest fires, if there's a lightning strike, etc.). The pine beetle has also been entering into northern Alberta...wreking similar havoc on pine trees...The biologists say that a week to 10 days of minus 40 weather can kill the beetles -- but, due to global warming we haven't had that kind of cold weather in some time...hence the infestation spreads.

WSJ column forwards outdated climate info published in SuperFreakonomics

Wall Street Journal columnist Bret Stephens advanced the claim made by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner in SuperFreakonomics -- which has recently come under criticism by economists and climate scientists for what they say are distortions in the book's climate change chapter -- that, in Stephens' words, "sea levels will probably not rise much more than 18 inches by 2100." However, this claim is apparently based on projections made in 2007 by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that did not include future changes in ice flow and therefore do not represent recent developments in climate science observations indicating that increased and accelerated ice sheet loss will cause sea levels to rise by more than previously projected.

One quote from the story stuck with me, they were talking about how many at first didn't buy into the warming as a cause, once it affected them directly "there's no atheists in fox holes"

The upper stage tumbled after separation - I don't think it was supposed to do that. Also, I don't think they had full chute deployment. They are not saying much, but I don't know that they wanted a tumble of the upper stage after separation - that would be a catastrophic failure on the next staging. The SRB worked, and perhaps that was the only test for today.

Anyone know?

There was a break in narration, then some incomplete comments. I think that they have a successful launch, but that tumble concerns me. I guess I should see what the mission parameters were supposed to be.

On a side note, I heard the launch supervisor briefing his staff use the word 'frickin' - not very professional, especially since they were broadcasting.

At about the T+2 minute point in the flight, the upper stage simulator and first stage will separate at approximately 130,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean. The unpowered simulator will splash down in the ocean. The first stage will be fired for a controlled ocean landing with parachutes that will allow recovery by one of NASA's booster recovery ships, while the other ship tracks the upper stage.

It was supposed to just drop off

It doesn't matter. MM has said and done a lot of crazy stuff for a while now, so, that makes it easy to ignore anything she has to say, even if it is reasonable and has a valid point.

Here is how Monty Python visualized this very moment:

Okay, I'm just concerned about the lateral tumble that the separation induced. I would think the decoupling should be neutral so the upper stage doesn't have to do immediate correction. What I observed was both stages almost colliding after staging. Also I could have sworn that the narrator said there were supposed to be parachutes on the upper stage.

I'm just nervous about failure with the vulnerability of the NASA budget in recent years. I've been a fan of space exploration since the first moon landing.

Banned in most countries actually. According to wiki, only 10 countries carried out executions in 2008. Mind you common sense would say executions can only occur when the person is held in custody, not on the battle field. But hey you can accuse the UN of a lot, but having common sense, no way!

345 lawhawk  Wed, Oct 28, 2009 8:58:33am

Fred Dicker lays out the problems with NY-23 and the State GOP. It's an argument I've been making since the mess started making national news. The state GOP has been incompetent for years, and their choice in Scozzafava has only highlighted the problems.

The Republican candidate, Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, is a past ally of the radical Working Families Party who's to the left of Obama on gay marriage and abortion and who has agreed with him on "card check" legislation and the "stimulus" package. She is in keeping with a string of losing RINO candidacies New Yorkers have seen during the last decade, compliments of former US Sen. Alfonse D'Amato and former Gov. George Pataki.

Their claim was that only a Republican-light contender, not a Republican-"right" candidate, could win in heavily blue-state New York. But such losing candidates as D'Amato, Dennis Vacco, Rick Lazio, Howard Mills, Dora Irizarry have made it clear that the theory is false. (Even D'Amato now recognizes this: Last night he was considering endorsing the Conservative Party candidate, Doug Hoffman, and not Scozzafava.)

Republicans saw the devastating end result of that approach in 2006, when Democrats won every statewide office for the first time in modern times.

The aftershock of that devastation came last year, when the Senate GOP, which had signed a Faustian pact with the state's leading leftist labor unions, lost control of the Legislature's upper house for the first time since 1964.

Making matters worse for Republicans in 2009 is that Scozzafava has a bright scarlet letter "A" -- for "Albany" -- figuratively tattooed on her forehead, as both the Democratic candidate, Bill Owens, a businessman and retired military officer, and Hoffman have made clear.

How the New York GOP could have picked an incumbent insider from the most dysfunctional Legislature in the nation to run in a heavily overtaxed and economically distressed district is hard to fathom.

That was a really good article. I'm glad you posted it. I hope more people read it and the New Yorker article it links:

The most striking power provided by emerging technologies,” [Sunstein] has written, is the “growing power of consumers to ‘filter’ what they see.”…In 2006, Sunstein performed his own study of fifty political sites. He found that more than four-fifths linked to like-minded sites but only a third linked to sites with an opposing viewpoint. Moreover, many of the links to the opposing side’s sites were offered only to illustrate how “dangerous, dumb, or contemptible the views of the adversary really are.”

Have to say that the above doesn't surprise me at all. It accords with my own observation of political blogs on the right and left both. Except here, pretty much.

Have you ever seen a parrot terrorize a cat? The two cats here are afraid of Maisey. If they get near the cage, Maisey just has to start screaming and the noise itself bothers the cats. And her cage is secure, even with a chain, the most they could do would be to try to pull the cage down, and they couldn't.

There used to be a fishing supply store near my folks' house, which had a parrot. The parrot used to scream whenever the phone rang, whereupon the owner would yell, "Bad bird! Bad bird!" Of course, this just led to the parrot learning to yell "Bad bird! Bad bird!" every time the phone rang.

My dad went in there one day with our dog. German shepherd mix, big friendly puppy. The phone rang. The bird yelled. Now, the dog knew about fifty words in English, but one of them was 'bad'. Dog flattened out on the floor just the way he did when my dad yelled at him for bad behavior. Eyes like saucers. The bird was scolding him, and he got submissive fast.

That would be domestic dogs, of course. Not coyotes.

Coyotes maul woman on hike in Canadian park

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia—Two coyotes attacked a Canadian woman while she was hiking in a national park in eastern Canada, and authorities said she died Wednesday of her injuries.

The victim was identified as Taylor Mitchell, 19, a singer-songwriter from Toronto.

She was hiking alone on a trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, in Nova Scotia, on Tuesday when the attack occurred. She was airlifted to a Halifax hospital in critical condition and died Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Coyotes, which are also known as prairie wolves, are found from Central American to the United States and Canada. Wildlife biologist Bob Bancroft says coyote attacks are extremely rare.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokeswoman Brigdit Leger says other hikers heard Mitchell's screams for help on Tuesday and called emergency police dispatchers.

Police who were in the area shot one of the animals, apparently wounding it. But the wounded animal and a companion coyote managed to get away.

I have to disagree, on two counts. One: the blogroll here features Kos, for example, and has for a long time AFAIK. That's somewhat rare in itself on a political blog-- for the blogroll to contain links to 'the opposition side'.
Two: Charles is always linking to people on 'the other side', even when they are people who have been pretty unfair to him in the past, when he thinks they get something right.

Hi Jason! Your post helps define what's been bothering me about this debate. It references two distinct issues: health care and health insurance.

Are there problems with health care in this country? Sure. But the administration isn't really addressing health care. The focus (in both the House and Senate) is on health insurance. The debate is on the "uninsured" - 30 million, who knows? - and how to insure them. But, to make the medicine go down, they talk about health care. It's an appeal to emotion.

The question - to me - is: what are the unintended consequences to health care that may arise as Congress attempts to deal with health insurance issues? What does it matter if there's 100 percent coverage, if the result is less availability to health care itself?

The president has talked about the cost of uninsured folks not paying their health care costs, and how that costs us all (read taxpayers) money. This as one justification for this massive overhaul. But here's an interesting thing to mull over:

Mandatory Savings?

In a 2008 Health Affairs article, George Mason University economist Jack Hadley and three co-authors calculate that "uncompensated care represents 2.2 percent of health spending in 2008"

Medicare and Medicaid are effectively bankrupt. Is it really a good idea to add what could well be very close to a $1 trillion dollar cost to solve a problem that is only about 2.2 percent of overall health spending?

I'd much prefer our elected representatives, including the president, identify a list of specific problems, and propose step-by-step solutions to each individually, while taking care to ensure that the solution to one problem doesn't exacerbate problems in other areas.

Oh sorry-- I misread you. Yes, the article mentions something like that too:

And what holds true for the news sites is even more so for the blogosphere, where it’s possible to spend hours surfing without ever entering new waters. Conservative blogs like Power Line almost always direct visitors to other conservative blogs, like No Left Turns, while liberal blogs like Daily Kos guide them to others that are also liberal, like Firedoglake. A study of the twenty most-visited blogs in each camp in the months leading up to the 2004 Presidential election found that more than eighty-five per cent of their links were to other blogs with similar politics.

Because the sites people visit don't have content from the other side, it becomes even easier for people to be in a bubble where they're exposed only to similar people and similar ideologies.

The fate of Fathima Rifqa Bary is now in the hands of an Ohio court.

Rifqa — the teenage runaway whose story of Muslim-to-Christian conversion made national headlines in August — was back in her home state Tuesday after spending three months living with strangers in Central Florida.

Tuesday's move, confirmed by the Department of Children and Families, officially ended Florida's emergency jurisdiction in Rifqa's case. Rifqa is now the responsibility of Franklin County Children Services, which is expected to place her in a foster home.

I hope her new foster family is better able to keep her away from the Dobson and Geller types, so that this girl can get a handle on life.

Meanwhile in an unrelated item that flew below the radar - Japan successfully tested its version of the US SM-3 anti-missile system.

The drill was the third such test for Japan, which began investing in a US-developed ballistic missile defense system after North Korea test-fired a long-range missile over northern Japan in 1998.

The US fired the test's target from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, and the JS Myoko destroyer detected the target, tracked it, then fired an SM-3 interceptor missile from its deck.

UN: US drone strikes may break international law

Boo fricking Hoo.

US drone strikes against suspected terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan could be breaking international laws against summary executions, the UN's top investigator of such crimes said.

"The problem with the United States is that it is making an increased use of drones/Predators (which are) particularly prominently used now in relation to Pakistan and Afghanistan," UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Executions Philip Alston told a press conference.

"My concern is that drones/Predators are being operated in a framework which may well violate international humanitarian law and international human rights law," he said.

US strikes with remote-controlled aircraft against Al-Qaeda and Taliban targets in Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan have often resulted in civilian deaths and drawn bitter criticism from local populations.

"The onus is really on the United States government to reveal more about the ways in which it makes sure that arbitrary extrajudicial executions aren't in fact being carried out through the use of these weapons," he added.

Yeah. I think so.

Only have three years to base that on though.

I think that part of it is that pre-ODS, the anti BDS folks gathered here but most shared many of the same political viewpoints. Then after the election, a bunch of the anti BDS folks refused to listen to their intellectual honesty and became ODS/anti LGFers and flounced. And then a bunch of anti ODS folks showed up, and met the former anti BDS/now anti/ODS folks, but there is a wide disagreement on many political viewpoints.

And neither side is afraid of a scrap. 'Ceptin me. I'm a baby.

That about right?

The UN would turn killing the enemy during a war into a war crime, unless of course, it was an "act of resistance" versus imperialist oppression.

Whoa! Here's more on Rifqa Bary and the cult she's fallen in with:

Fathima Rifqa Bary Under the Influence of a Christian Cult

Fathima Rifqa Bary, has claimed that her parents are “radical Muslims,” yet the reality seems to be that it is actually she herself who has fallen into the ranks of radicals. We’re already very familiar with the extremist church she is involved with, the Global Revolution Church, which preaches that there is today an Armageddon between good (the Christians) and evil (the Muslims).

Now, let’s look into a different group she has associated herself with, namely The Call, another End of Times Armageddon invoking group. Here she is on a conference call with Lou Engle, the fanatical leader of the cult:

Who is this Lou Engle?

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a non-profit civil rights organization that tracks hate groups, cites Lou Engle as a prominent Joel’s Army pastor. Proponents of this theology (considered heretical by mainstream Christians) believe that the Christian youth will become a part of Joel’s Army that will physically “conquer the earth” and forcibly convert “the nations” to Christianity. Democracy will be overthrown and a literalistic Biblical law will reign supreme.

And for some added snark:

Keep in mind that the Islamophobes like Robert Spencer and Pam Geller try to convince us that Muslims secretly want to conquer the entire world for Islam, overthrow democracy for a harsh understanding of Sharia, and convert the world to their religion.

Yet, here we have a girl (Fathima Rifqa Bary) associating with a man (Lou Engle) who is linked to a warlike theology that endorses the idea that Christian youth armies will conquer the entire world for Jesus, overthrow democracy, and forcibly convert non-believers to Christianity–and look at what side Spencer and Geller are on!

ZING!

Really creepy stuff this girl has fallen in with, and again I hope her new foster family can keep her from this.

Sounds reasonable. I wouldn't know, I didn't really spend much time in the comments before I regged here, although I'd been reading for years. Maybe it reflects the mood of the country overall, too. There's definitely a lot more ugliness in average political discourse right now, I think.

Fathima Rifqa Bary Under the Influence of a Christian Cult

More:

Her fascination with Lou Engle began long before. As Davi Baker of the SF Examiner notes, it was discovered that Lou Engle’s book entitled Digging the Wells of Revival was part of Fathima Rifqa’s reading material. Additionally, the group she found refuge in, the Global Revolution Church, has similar metanarratives.

I am completely disguisted by this radical preacher. All he has succeeded in doing is make a sensational case out of this girl potentially undermining very real cases of threatened and commited honor killings. If he had a real concern for this girl he should have referred her to child services and the police and kept his crusading butt out of it.

UN: US drone strikes may break international law

Boo fricking Hoo.

In a related story, the Pentagon announced today the incorporation of updated software for all predator drone targeting modules.

"It appears there may be a bug in the program," noted General Phil Paxton. "We installed the update, which is designed to calculate the most dangerous threat automatically, and the entire predator fleet instantaneously calculated the coordinates of the U.N. building."

Milo Kretzel, senior programmer on the project, responded, "That's not a bug, it's a feature."

(okay, I made that up.)

Then, do you watch CNN's Campbell Brown program?

Here's (part of) the transcript from Oct. 27, 2009:

BROWN: Meanwhile, an extraordinary tale of survival in Afghanistan coming from "New York Times" reporter David Rohde. He was kidnapped by the Taliban last November, spent seven months in captivity before escaping in June. Well, now he's finally beginning to describe his experience.

Here he is with Charlie Rose on PBS. [snip]

ROHDE: They're convinced that they will succeed against the United States. And one of the things that surprised me was that they -- they hate President Obama far more than they hate President George W. Bush.

ROSE: Because?

ROHDE: Because he has increased the number of drone strikes in the tribal areas, and he has increased American troop levels into Afghanistan.
