Registration Wednesday Evening

There comes a time when the registration door must swing open, and the Turnstiles of Lizardia must turn, clicking and counting away the hatchlings as they enter.

That time is now upon us, for a limited time, and lo, the ‘Register’ link is at the top of the left sidebar.

It’s not a bad idea to read all the rules before you register, commit them to memory, and recite them to yourself in idle moments. The short version:

  • Don’t register with a proxy.
  • Don’t register with a throwaway email address.
  • Don’t register more than one account at a time.
  • Don’t be a jerk.
  • Don’t be a troll.
  • Don’t be a sock puppet. Stinky Beaumont hates sock puppets. He will find you. You don’t want Stinky mad at you.
  • If you’re registering just to post a dramatic “goodbye cruel world” comment full of insults and drool, don’t waste your time. Nobody’s going to read it. It will be immediately deleted and your account will be blocked.
  • Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 10/28/09 8:36:38 pm:

And just like that, with no warning, the registration window of opportunity has closed again.

I saw that. It's a rotten tactic, but it may work. And if Hoffman wins the seat, look for people like him to mount primary challenges elsewhere.

It's amazing how little info is available on Doug Hoffman. We do know he's not Dede Scozzafava, though!

Scozzafava is the religious right's test case to see what they can get away with in the right wing's current tea party mass insanity mood. Hoffman is the ultimate stealth candidate.

re: #20 Gus 802

Looks like old Dougie Hoffman is getting his feet wet rather quickly. Yeah, he's an outsider all right.

According to this, he hasn't been very engaged with local political issues, and is a little shaky on small government in practice if it means turning down money:

But on many issues related to the 23rd Congressional district, Hoffman is a mystery. He has been largely silent on issues like acid rain in the Adirondacks, invasive species in the St. Lawrence River, the low milk price for farmers, the rooftop highway.

And he’s been sending mixed messages on fiscal conservatism. He’s against the federal stimulus. He opposes President Obama’s health care reform plan. But take the North Country’s heavy dependence on government for everything from jobs to highways. Hoffman runs a hard-line small government campaign, yet he says this.

Government services have to continue, especially the military. And government programs such as prisons up here have to continue.

When pressed just last week what big chunks of the budget he’d cut to lower taxes, Hoffman attacked member earmarks in Congress. But he offered no specifics.[Link: www.northcountrypublicradio.org...]

Yes. No political experience and he is essentially only speaking "in theory." If he wins the election he is going to have to get earmarks for the 23rd if he wants to get re-elected. Half the time these guys are all talk.

I don't understand why they are even asking him about "what parts of the budget he would cut." The only thing he could do would be to introduce legislation or amendments that would still be subjected to house rules. He's not running for president and/or emperor king of the 23rd.

re: #38 HappyWarrior

Question about Doug Hoffman. How is it legal for him to run in the 23rd Congressional District when his residence is in the 20th?

Must be legal in New York.
Here's Hoffman addressing the politics of where he lives:

Hoffman lives in Lake Placid, which is a few miles from the 23rd District in the neighboring 20th District. Hoffman said he doesn't think his residency will be a problem with voters, noting he grew up and went to high school and college in the 23rd and that his accounting firm, Dragon, Benware, Crowley & Co., has offices in Watertown, Canton, Massena and Malone, all within the 23rd.

"I'm in the district almost daily," Hoffman said.

Hoffman said Lake Placid could very well be returned to the 23rd after the 2010 census but that he would be willing to move back to Saranac Lake in the meantime. Saranac Lake is where he grew up, and the bulk of it is in the 23rd District.[Link: www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com...]

re: #38 HappyWarrior

Excellent question, but one that the State Board of Elections doesn't take seriously given that there are a few people in politics who claim to represent one district in the state but live somewhere completely different.

I'm sure Hoffman will claim that he has a post office box somewhere in the 23rd (and Lake Placid is on the cusp of the 23rd, but is solidly in the 20th).

64 Gus  Wed, Oct 28, 2009 7:08:02pm

Some CPNY red meat from the Archives.

CONSERVATIVES CAST CANNABIS AS DANGEROUS DRUG

Ft. Hamilton Station, NY -- The New York State Conservative Party is urging the Members of the Legislature to reject efforts to legalize the use of medical cannabis. The following legislative memo in opposition, stating the Party’s concerns follows:

The justification section of the senate support memo states that “medical evidence has shown that medical cannabis, commonly know as “medical marihuana” can prove effective in treating the side effects and pain of certain serious diseases and conditions.” However, no where in the memo does it site where the “medical evidence” is from. The Federal Drug Administration? The Institute of Medicine?

[snip]

A recent “O’Reilly Factor” segment dealt with the problems California has encountered with its medical marihuana laws. Fox News producer Chris Spinder went into a walk-in clinic and fifteen minutes later had a form letter to purchase eight ounces of marihuana.

IN OPPOSITION TO MANDATED BIRTH CONTROL COVERAGE

Purpose: An Act to amend the Insurance Law and the public health law, in relation to coverage of primary and preventive health care issues for women including but not limited to birth control coverage.

Party Position: Health coverage for individuals is an important issue facing New York residents as well as all Americans. The fact that government is about to mandate that employers provide contraceptives to their employees oversteps its role in requiring what kind of coverage employees need to be healthy. Birth control pills are not a necessity and to mandate their coverage is an affront to businesses trying to provide coverage that is designed to allow for early detection of devastating diseases.

Rush mentioned Charles' revealing of the fauxtography during the Israel/Hezbollah conflict of '06. It boggled my mind that there were seemingly random people on the internet that were reporting more interesting and relevant news than the talking heads on the mainstream news channels. I followed lgf on and off until I was able to register in June 2007 while at work. Like most lizards, I froze when deciding on a screen name but settled with the screen name I've been using since I first got on the interwebs. The first lizard name I started to recognize after a few weeks, due to my ongoing sporadic log-ins because I'm usually logged on at work was MandyManners. I'm glad she's still around. Well, I found LGF about 4 or 5 years ago, and the shear oddness of the name grabbed my attention. Unfortunately, the stridency and tenor of the commentary at the time was enough to send me running in the other direction, even though the topics and main page writing seemed to be pretty thoughtful. (It would be interesting to know how many Lizards remember that time; old-timers may feel free to correct my observations as you seem fit.)

Fast-forward to March of this year, and some odd link (from either Balloon-Juice or RightWingNutHouse, I forget which) sent me back here; the comments and general direction of the place now seemed pretty groovy. After several months of lurking, finally registered in August, but was too absorbed to realize that I had succeeded in doing so until earlier this month.

Have been enjoying myself ever since, and wouldn't change a thing here!

It's amazing how little info is available on Doug Hoffman. We do know he's not Dede Scozzafava, though!

Scozzafava is the religious right's test case to see what they can get away with in the right wing's current tea party mass insanity mood. Hoffman is the ultimate stealth candidate.

Yeah. I looked up Scozzafava's record, and I can see why she might not appeal to fiscal conservatives. So I went to check Hoffman's record and...nothing.

Hey, the guy says he's running on a fiscally conservative platform; wants to cut spending and lower taxes. He's not running with an R or D after his name and automatically everyone wants to tear him apart? What are the other choices? Left and far left?

You might want to take a gander at the video in the next thread.

Hello, everyone. Long time reader, first time poster. (Been wanting to register for a long time, but kept missing the registration window.) I'm a politics nerd, and spent a long time looking for a site that offered conservative comment without the bile and racism that pervades certain other sites. I actually found LFG by accident, when I read on another site that it was catching hell for challenging the craziness. I followed the link, and well, here I am.

Not sure. What's the average life of a real lizard? Now what's the average life of a flounced lizard? If I had to guess, and if we're comparing an lgf lizard's life span to that of a human (about 78 years, I've heard), I guess I'd say I'm about as old here as I am in real life, 29.

I wouldn't mind if some older Lizards share theirs either. I find the various ways people found LGF to be interesting, and thought it would be a nice way for newbies to break the ice.

There are other questions that might also work for folks to get the comment ball rolling, but I'm fond of this one. What other questions could we use to get the newbies talking though?

re: #63 lawhawk

Excellent question, but one that the State Board of Elections doesn't take seriously given that there are a few people in politics who claim to represent one district in the state but live somewhere completely different.

I'm sure Hoffman will claim that he has a post office box somewhere in the 23rd (and Lake Placid is on the cusp of the 23rd, but is solidly in the 20th).

Yeah this certainly is not without precedent as people have already mentioned Bobby Kennedy and Hillary Clinton. He does seem to in all fairness to him have ties to the district but still it seems weird to me.

They're all for giving a man a stiff wahoo but not for giving a woman the means to prevent pregnancy.

This got me thinking about countering the pro-lifers with a tax credit or some means of assistance related to vasectomies. I don't remember this idea being floated by anyone. Insurance plans have covered vasectomies for several years - my co-pay was $15 in '95. It seems guys are targeting women on this subject and need to have a look in the mirror. Of course a lot of guys are pansies and won't get a vasectomy even if it's free.

I feel odd considering myself an "old" lizard but I'm sitting on 2.5 years of being a lizard so maybe I' just fooling myself...
Not that she'd have any reason to get the boot! ;)

1) These folks think like I do - not 100%, but we could get along.

2) I'm fairly inarticulate at politics and they seem to be smarter than me. I might could learn something here!

3) There was a lot of good humor being thrown about (I think it was the honored FNDT!) and I like a group that can share a laugh.

So I pitched my tent.

Heh, you have a good memory; my grandparents tried to get a divorce in New York back in the 40's, and they tried doing exactly that, but the courts still wouldn't let them get divorced! I think they ended up going to Illinois to get their divorce, after months of extra pain and suffering inflected on my mom and aunt as a result of the stupid laws.

No, you're right; the threads could get pretty overwrought in those days, me included sometimes. Hi all

I am one of the newly minted hatchlings.

I found LGF in a frustrating attempt to regularly read multiple viewpoints, and had almost given up on conservatism until I arrived here. I was worried that last summer's Republican convention had acquired a highly contagious dose of crazy that had infected every one on the right side of the spectrum. I was pleased to find LGF and it has resided on my favorites ever since.

And OT: Go Phillies! I'm not from PA but have an entirely irrational hatred of the Yankees.

140 anamika  Wed, Oct 28, 2009 7:38:09pm

ex-LGF'er dr.orfannkyl of jumpinginthepools blog also posted his complaints against LGF at The Next Right.

Nice to read the comment section in there for some sanity and the wingnut being exposed of his own inanity for which he had no response at a right wing blog, for a change:

this is sad
Submitted by Ray in TX on Sun, 10/25/2009 - 11:12.

You post a fraudulent account of President Obama's college thesis on your blog and get called out by everyone about what a total jerk you are for doing so.

There is no way anyone could know that picture was not of you, but of another anonymous autistic person you've placed on the site. And considering your history of fraud now, there's no reason to believe that your current story is true.

And even if it were, why would you associate your autistic friend with a hoax blog and then hide behind his autism when you are criticized for what you did? Do you not have any dignity whatsoever?

yes, it gives them the right
Submitted by Ray in TX on Mon, 10/26/2009 - 23:11.

You knowingly posted a fraudulent account about Obama's thesis, which was then picked up by non-critical conservatives and carried as fact.

You are a fool. In your haste to make a joke at Obama's expense, you have instead damaged the reputations of people you undoubtedly support (like Rush).

Some anonymous guy on LGF saw the picture and assumed it was you. Most bloggers put their own picture on their blog. There was no reason to assume it was someone else, so it was fair game for criticism since you were the one with the fraudulent post.

Now you come here and cry, using someone else's handicap as a distraction for the blunder that you caused on the conservative side of the political spectrum.

You are a pathetic individual.

I just watched the Hardball interview. [Disclaimer: Chris Matthews is a braying jackass.] I get it, they're social conservatives. But again, he's running on a fiscal conservative platform.

Oh, please. Have you read their site? Are you for denying women insurance coverage for birth control pills?

re: #149 WindUpBird

Off topic, which is a worse cliche?

"There's an ancient chinese proverb..."
or
"I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you."

Both of these phrases give me the angry red stars at the edges of my vision whenever I hear them. I can't decide which one is worse.

There are so many that bug me. It really depends on my mood, but I tend to roll my eyes when someone trots out the ever-popular "comparing apples and oranges." And though I don't believe I've personally ever been accused of putting words in someone's mouth, when someone says "stop putting words in my mouth," those angry red stars you mentioned make their appearance. And one that hasn't reached cliche status and I hope never does, but instead dies a lonely death is the term "butthurt." My respect for the user of this instantly plummets.

Newbie here checking in. Glad to make the registration window.

Chose my nic because I have 3 kids and 3 dogs (aren't I creative).

Mandy,
That doesn't necessarily mean he's in lock step with them. Are you a member of a party? Do you agree with everything they stand for? I am and I don't. At most he'll be in for two years unless he migrates to the GOP. Do you seriously believe he'll have any impact besides a vote in favor of the GOP position? He'll never draft any legislation that will make it out of his own office.

I apologized to Jimmah & Iceweasel tonight, for my attempts last night & previously to be the "word police" on exactly that term. Then I realized, they are articulate adults, who can state their points of view, as they choose to. My dislike of the words they choose to use, is MY problem, not theirs. I don't have to like the words they choose to express their opinions.

That's my 2 cents on the issue.

Flo - I don't like the word either, and I agree with you that we don't need any "word police" - people are free to use whatever words they choose.

But I also feel free to express my dislike of words I don't like.

Usually I just say "ew".

This is true, but the original question was about maddening cliches, so I took off on this one too. It could become a cliche here at LGF, but does nothing to foster any sort of respect or goodwill.

Hello.

I've been wanting to join up for a while, but as an Australian it's been a bit hard to get my timezone to match with the random periods that registration is open.

But I'm in now! Huzzah!

As for why I'm here... well, I just enjoy the commentary, even if I don't agree with it. It's friendly and civil.

I remember joining up to Atlas Shrugged 2000 a while back to ask an honest question about why it was so reprehensible to have separate Muslim prayer rooms in airports - and got insults hurled at me about how I was homo leftist scum, or something like that. And Pamela actually encouraged it!

But it's nice here. And I love the music. Pretty ordinary reasons, but there you go. Please don't hurt me!

And that's fair, Reine, as free speech means we do police our own to an extent with our approval. We certainly display this tendency when someone pops up here at LGF and posts some nasty, bigoted comment by clicking our dinger, and the comment is usually deleted. So there is nothing wrong with saying you find something offensive or support something else- it's all in the context and your personal opinion.

Hey FG! That was very nice of you and also not even necessary (but appreciated!!) I don't think there's anything wrong with expressing dislike of a word. Nor is there anything wrong with making a good faith effort to reduce or avoid use of it around people who one knows doesn't like it and I try to do that. No harm no foul, IMO.

re: #188 Silvergirl

Where's ice? It's her pet term also.

Right here. You've got one thing right: the word is sort of a cliche everywhere else on the internet. It's been in heavy use since at least 2003. It's a perfectly harmless word.

And now I think that's all I have to say on the matter--except to note that it's a really stupid and rude idea to have flamewars on a thread that's a registration thread, where lots of new people are coming by, and are completely uninterested in this sort of petty bullshit. And it's bad for the blog. So I'll be happy to have this conversation at some other time, should you feel the need to prolong it.

Cool. Welcome! I almost wonder if I saw that thread over at the shrieking harpy's place...it's entirely possible that it was some other thread there where that was going on. Seems to be an ordinary occurrence there.

re: #28 Sharmuta

I wouldn't mind if some older Lizards share theirs either.

Coming out of lurking again (briefly) to answer the call :)

I've attempted to find my first posts from waaay back (there were only maybe a handful) to say how long I've been around, but could only find one as far back as September 2008. I know I've had a few posts prior to that, but who knows why the aren't out there anymore.

I came to LGF by way of the Independent Women's Forum way back before registration was required (I think some time in '02). I don't read there anymore, but am grateful that they pointed me in this direction. Even then, I lurked for the most part. In late '03 or early '04, I quit reading for a bit because of the tone that had become prevalent - the comment had become increasingly violent and unpleasant in all sorts of ways and that didn't seem like a healthy thing to mentally ingest. I missed reading the news that was being missed by the major media outlets, though, and came back to lurk in late 2004. I didn't know that registration had been implemented a few months earlier, but did notice the drastic improvement in the tenor of the blog and began lurking semi-regularly again. At some point, I tried to post and found out that registration was required. My timing was TERRIBLE. It took me forever to find an open registration window. But, eventually it happened. I've been a regular to semi-regular lurker ever since (with a few bouts of absence due to "life"). Because I mostly read from work (Big Brother, ya know), learn more from reading because I'm ill-qualified to discuss many of the subjects intelligently, and am usually playing catch up reading in dead threads, I very rarely post. But I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the things I've learned from reading the exchanges of my fellow lizards.

And that's my story of how I came to LGF. Thanks, Charles, for such a great place and for your anti-idiotarian stand. Thanks, fellow lizards, for lively, nuanced debates from a wide array of opinions and positions. I love reading and learning from you!

215 Quiddity  Thu, Oct 29, 2009 7:57:31pm
