Very lovely. Any ideas on the type of wood that guitar is made of? I don't recognize the symbol on the headstock either.

I'm battening down the hatches for Halloween. No candy this year so all shades are drawn, all lights are off. I even raked leaves onto my walkway so the house doesn't even look inviting to trick-or-treaters.

This looks interesting...
Scozzafava's Supporters Like Obama, Dislike Hoffman and Owens

Consider the Siena poll out this morning, which has all sorts of useful cross-tabs. Scozzafava's supporters in this poll:

-- Have a favorable view of Barack Obama by a 64-31 margin.
-- Have an unfavorable view of Hoffman 15-57.
-- Have an unfavorable view of Democrat Bill Owens, 19-50.

It's not quite so clear how Hoffman stands to benefit from this. Although a majority of Scozzafava's supporters are Republican (about 62 percent, by my reckoning), it is safe to assume that they are mostly rather moderate Republicans, because almost all the conservative Republicans had already gone over to Hoffman. To wit, two-thirds of Scozzafava's supporters say they like Barack Obama. While moderate Republicans are an endangered species elsewhere in the country, that is not true in upstate New York, where a lot of voters are registered as Republicans and vote that way in statewide races but often vote Democratic in federal races. (NY-23 supported Barack Obama 52-47 last November.)

The reality is that a lot of Scozzafava's ex-supporters, many of whom don't like either Hoffman or Owens, simply won't vote

I know it's only 3 games in, but winning IN Cleveland and waxing Chicago last night, considering the playoff war they had

it's way cool

In Maine, there's also a very small island off the coast of Portland between Portland itself and Peaks Isalnd (an island thats part of Portland and has about 2,000 year round residents,,, 6,000 in the summer)

The small island is "House Island" and has two buildings on it. One is an occupied house, and the other is a house converted into a function hall. People rent it for weddings, family reunions, etc

If I had to guess I'd think that most of Scozzafava's voters will stay home. Since she's still technically on the ballot a few will still vote for her anyways or vote Dem. Hoffman might pick up a few converts but not many. Also don't underestimate the Dems motivation to pick up what has previously been a solid Republican seat.

When I lived in Boston I had a summer cottage (read ,,SHACK) on Peaks island

As stated, there are year round homes there, but most of the "cottages" were not winterized. It's changed a lot since then. People who had cottages winterized and added on to them and have retired there.

Not a set of traffic lights on the island

Here’s a funny (but true) Halloween story.
Years ago I was elk hunting in central Oregon. Stopped by to visit some friends at a remote Forest Service Ranger Station on Halloween night. So remote the black top began 50 miles down the gravel road. About 15 families lived at this station. The traditional Halloween custom at the station was for the wives to take the kids trick or treating around the houses while the husbands stayed home to pass out the goodies. Another part of the custom was for the wives to carry a martini class. So at each house the kids got candy and the wives a martini. Of course the husbands at each house had to have a drink along with each trick or treater. By 9 PM not a creature was stirring.

174 wrenchwench  Sat, Oct 31, 2009 4:38:23pm

My favorite Halloween costumes have all been made from cardboard boxes. One year I was a pay phone. (You youngsters can google that.) The parts came from a vandalized pay phone (I didn't do it, I swear!) and I attached them to a box I wore with my head sticking out the top. I would make a ringing noise, answer it, and say, "It's for you" and hand it to whoever was near, and they took it from there. Some people were really good at improvising one side of a conversation.

This was before anyone had a cell phone. I wonder how it would work now.

re: #168 Dark_Falcon

I remember seeing some pictures in National Geographic of some Catholic Holy Day procession in Spain where the marchers were wearing brown robes with hoods that looked like they were styled after the KKK's. Only thing was, the festival (and by implication, the robes) pre-dated the klan by some 500 years.

I thought maybe that was the same thing happening in the Ukraine photos until I saw the confederate flag.

I bet there are kids who have no clue what a pay phone is.
I'm frankly not sorry to see 'em go - the ones I used were always sticky and yucky and . . .ew.

The last few around here were taken out because they were only used for drug deals.

I was getting my car repaired earlier this year and while I was waiting, I struck up a conversation with an older gentleman who turned out to be from my hometown. He was retired now, but he was working for the phone company back then. His job was to go to the various payphones throughout the Pioneer Valley and Berkshire hilltowns and collect the coins as well as repair any problems he might come across. He said when it was time for his retirement, the phone company didn't even bother with a replacement...

Told me he was basically living off of his stock options and living well.

Was a kid in school yesterday wearing a box decorated as a very expensive gift. In the upper left-hand corner, on the FROM label: GOD.
In the middle, on the TO label: ALL WOMEN.
I thought that was kinda clever.

That is sick. Wasn't in Chicago, cause anyone who did that here would have gotten pulped. My family actually shopped at the Walgreens where the bad bottles were placed. My favorite Halloween memory is when my little brother got his Superman costume. He tried it on, came running out into the living room, got up on the couch, jumped off and hit the floor.

Priceless.

Tights will do that to a boy.

BINGO

Back about 15-20 years ago there was a spate of razor blades in the apples/ tainted candy/ etc that put a damper on Halloween door to door. It's morphed more into church/ school Trunk or Treats where you know everyone or small house parties or just going to relatives houses

I'm guessing he didn't tell his parents. This was in college. But I think his sister perpetuated the nickname.

Oh.

Honestly, I am never comfortable when teenagers come to the door at Halloween. If I was them I would be up to no good.

College party I suppose, but not ringing doorbells.

Come to think of it, the traffic has been slow this year and the young uns with parents have been fewer still.

As I kid in the 60s, we always heard about the apples/razor blade thing -- thought it was an urban myth. But we went out, got candy and came sick but happy. Sometimes, when you think about it, there were "good, old days".

Concur. I'm too young to remember that (it was more like 25 years ago), but it had a mixed legacy. It did alert the public to a real threat, but it also resulted in a number of people being imprisoned, some until recently, for crimes they did not commit.

re: #309 Gang of One

Aye. I recall as much. You are right, Ice.

Actually I think it was more like 25 years ago...mid 80's at the peak. You also had fake books like Michelle Remembers scaring people. Fake Multiple Personality Disorder and claims that it was caused by repressed memories of incest or satanic abuse. Stuff like the book When Rabbit Howls. Oprah and others earnestly interviewing many women who were the victim of poorly trained or unscrupulous psychotherapists, claiming that in their childhood they were forced to be high priestesses of satanic cults and subjected to gruesome abuse.

And of course, many people went to prison falsely as a result. Not to mention the women themselves, who falsely believed these implanted memories, and lost their health, their lives, their marriages, and their sanity for a while.

Collectively there was this backlash where we saw danger everywhere and had heightened fears about strangers and even neighbours around children. throw in the beginnings of the 24 hour news cycle and a few actual highly publicised cases of child abduction and murder and/or rape, and voila. All these years later and people take their kids to shopping centers or tightl supervised areas to trick or treat, and won't let them ride their bike down the block.

There's no doubt that there is real danger out there, and more than in decades past, but we're also still suffering from massive over-protectiveness regarding children -- and frightened by the 24/7 news cycle's sensationalism.

Excellent books on false memory syndrome and the satanic panic here, btw.

Sexual hysteria was a huge component of the witchcraft trials as well.

We just finished up Halloween here (Dartmouth, NS, Canada)... very few kids. This year. Nice night too.

There was a lot of talk about H1N1 on the radio. "Don't allow children to reach into your candy dish. Place the candy in their bag so they don't contaminate the candy in your dish." Never mind the fact that I never heard of anyone allowing trick or treaters to take their own treats.

Crime, kidnappings, people doing bad things to kids and probably even messing with Halloween treats are lower than when I was a kid yet most folks are "more careful" with their kids than I was with mine or my parents with me... because of the perceived increase in danger.

I'm in hiding.

fear based social engineering masquerading as a public safety

I remember that one, and I think there was a TV movie made of it also, and the so called "profession" of interviewing children about supposed abuse has been more or less discredited as a result.

Strangely however one of the people involved was still in prison when I last saw something, even though everything about the prosecution was discredited. One of the prosecutors even resigned in protest I think.

Those cases are almost impossible to stop once they get rolling. Still, Dale Akiki was fortunate enough to have been accused after the flaws in such cases had become known. Had his case happened 7-10 years earlier, he would have almost certainly been convicted.

How about an automatic candy dispense machine. That way you can sit in the comfort of your home during those Halloween nights without having to answer the door.

I remember when we lived in South Jersey and we would take out the storm window from the screen door just so we could dispense the candy without having to open the screen door all the time. Plus if kept the house felines at bay.

The Dale Akiki case was such a farce that everyone involved with charging and prosecuting him should have been up on charges themselves. It was a fucking travesty. It happened when I was in college (the first time) back then I remember debating in one of my classes that I thought he was being made a scapegoat because he looked strange and people were finding bogus "satanic cults" around every corner. Turned out I was right.

This right here should have been a red flag for a judge to throw it out of court:

The cases against him included no physical evidence, but allegations of satanic ritual abuse including testimony that he killed a giraffe and an elephant in front of the children, drank human blood in satanic rituals, and had abducted the children away from the church despite being unable to drive.

Where the fuck in San Diego, CA is someone going to get a giraffe and an elephant? I'm sure the zoo or the Wild Animal Park would have noticed them missing.

I never even heard of this one-- how awful. It does often seem like once the machinery of the state is engaged, it's all over. Even if you have a case where it's obvious the person was innocent, you'll get prosecutors who won't back down (possibly partly because DAs often make the really sensational cases an election issue, using it to show how tough on crime they are). They don't want to admit they were wrong.

Semi-OT but this is the reason why I am in the final analysis opposed to the death penalty. No matter how hard the system tries, there is always the possibilty of an innocent person being executed. And it's not worth the risk to society for me, even though there are so many who certainly do deserve it in a moral sense.
(I make an exception for the military though.)

Reminder about Rick Perry, btw, who increasingly seems engaged in a coverup over the execution of an innocent man.

Some new details have emerged about the objectives of the radical group I posted about last night.

The Schroedinger’s Cat Liberation Front carries out direct action against abuse on cats in physics laboratories in the form of rescuing animals and causing financial loss to animal exploiters, usually through the damage and destruction of property. The SCLF’s short-term aim is to save as many felines as possible and directly disrupt the practice of cat abuse. Their long term aim is to end all animal suffering by forcing animal abuse research departmens out of business.

It is a nonviolent campaign, activists taking all precautions not to harm any animal (human or otherwise).

Because SCLF actions may be against the law, activists work anonymously, either in small groups or individually, and do not have any centralized organization or coordination.

One hopes the FBI is on the ball and this time around, the POTUS doesn't ignore the intelligence and takes the threat seriously!!!

The Schroedinger Cat Liberation Front aims to save cats from cruel experiments carried out in all theoretical physics labs in the planet. Where the fuck in San Diego, CA is someone going to get a giraffe and an elephant? I'm sure the zoo or the Wild Animal Park would have noticed them missing.

That is absolutely insane.
This does seem to be a common theme in the interviewing of child witnesses then-- the kids were so young and the interviewers seemed to not grasp how children react, nor did the interviewers understand how memory works. The kids would typically make up wild stories eventually, and yet the obviously imaginary bits would be overlooked or squashed in the rush to make a case. So fucked up.

I want to read this at some point on Moral Panic, and this.

Anybody gone to Yahoo today. They're animation at the top is great.

Monsters doing the "Thriller" dance.

Just found out that my town had a thriller dance... trying to set a record... most people... etc.

Monks (was it Monks?) probably beat them tho.

Maybe it was the mean old man who didn't buy any candy, turned off his porch light, and closed the blinds...

That might be a reason...

It wouldn't surprise me if people are afraid of Manbirdpig, at least when it comes to their kids.

He's lucky he has friends, I was never good at making them. You do very well for you son, Mandy.

Oh, thank you, Falcon. Honestly, sometimes I don't know how I make it from one minute to the next. Again, thank you.

I skipped giving out candy last year too. Usually there are still groups of kids wandering around. There's nothing this year.

By now your reputation has spread through the middle schools like a wildfire. They're not just avoiding your house, but your whole street.

You have to remember that most Scottish food was invented as a dare! Fear is one of the main ingredients in this cuisine, ice-ski :)

Our four main ingredients are fear, surprise, and...no wait. Three. Our three main ingredients are...Fear, surprise, and blood pudding.

(I love that line; scottish food invented on a dare! Mike Myers marrying a sociopath, lol. A great movie with a happy ending, Jim-ski.)

It was kinda' slow in the village but, the folks in this neck of the woods once again had a fantastic time. I declare, Sasha (the one who lives next door to Mr. Horse Breeder, erstwhile potential paramour of yrs trly) is the most amazing woman I know when it comes to throwing a party. I would be, too, if I had a personal fucking assistant but, I digress.

You're probably on target with the H1N1 observation. Folks are spooked about it.

Oh, boo fucking hoo. She should take her "The View" format to GAZA!

Addressing a roomful of Pakistani women Friday afternoon at the National Art Gallery here, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made every effort to connect with her audience. But after enduring multiple security checks and waiting over four hours for the secretary to arrive, most women left unimpressed.

“Frankly, it was a waste of my time,” said one assistant professor from the Fatima Jinnah Women’s University (FJWU) in Rawalpindi, who asked not to be named. “[Clinton] wasn’t interested in hearing the about the layman’s problems or the reality of our daily lives.”

That caused many, such as Shazia Marri, the information minister of the Sindh province, to leave the meeting frustrated that their concerns were not heard. “Emancipated women in Pakistan have a clear point of view that did not come across,” she said.

SNIP

It didn’t help that many women objected to the format of the discussion, which was moderated by five female news anchors. Before Clinton arrived, one State Department representative explained that the format aimed to imitate the popular talk show, ‘The View.’

But it seems the women were not all convinced that the show is what the meeting most closely mirrored. “This meeting was as micromanaged as our country’s internal affairs,” quipped the FJWU professor. “[The Americans] were trying to retain the upper-hand in the conversation.”

SNIP

Oh it's scary,

Look at their mission statement.

The Schroedinger Cat Liberation Front aims to save cats from cruel experiments carried out in all theoretical physics labs in the planet. As you may know there is a (thought, they say!)experimant that was devised by the Nazi scientist, Erwin Schrödinger, that occurres in the death of the cat 50% of the time. We cannot afford a loss of felines so high, we will take any action to liberate the cats by opening their little black boxes!

But they must realize that half the cats don't die until they open the boxes?

They are cat killers in disguise.
