I posted this in a spinoff, but it's perfect for an open election night thread:

The GOP should dump the neocons

Limited-government conservatives have been undermined by big-government neoconservatives.

The founders envisioned a federal government constitutionally limited to defending our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. For that to happen, we must have at least one political party that strongly advocates limiting the power of government. For much of the 19th century, that party was the Democrats. For the early part of the 20th century and from the early 1960s through 1988, that party was the Republicans.

Today, it is difficult to find noninterventionists in either party.

The Democrats demonstrate a disdain for capitalism, free trade and the validity of contracts. They cheer the restriction of certain types of speech on campus and in federal law, and think nation-building is our moral obligation, even when there is no discernible U.S. interest involved. Lately, the Democrats have been popularly associated with principled opposition to waging war in far-flung corners of the globe. But evidence on the ground today tells a somewhat different tale.

As for the GOP, it has outwardly abandoned the limited-government principles of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Little other evidence is needed than the Medicare prescription drug benefit -- with its $13-trillion unfunded liability -- passed with a strong-arm campaign by the Bush White House and a Republican congressional majority.

What happened to the Republicans? Well, the two Bush presidencies didn't help. Neither did the supply-side movement, focused on tax cuts and economic growth. Supporters of those ideas didn't talk about spending cuts, much less the proper role of government. They had the effect of replacing "liberty" as the motivating force behind the GOP with "growth," a somewhat less-inspiring ideal.

Americans are not as crazy as it seems. We all want a good job and a nice place to live with cool stuff. We want to feel safe from the crackheads down the block AND the assholes overseas.

We want the government use our taxes wisely - we worked hard for our paycheck - spend it on essential stuff only dammit!

Its all good.

All I'm looking for is a rational party that stands for fical conservatism, limited government, and lower taxes.

Where can I find such a party because I don't want it to come loaded down with conspiracy theorist like Glenn Beck or wacky theocrats.

Club For Growth Spent $1 Million in NY-23. Is This a Bad Omen for the GOP in 2010?

The Atlantic’s Chris Good has an interesting breakdown on who spent what on New York’s hotly-contested 23rd congressional district race. The big news: The Club for Growth spent more than $1 million in support of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. That’s slightly less than the $1.1 million the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chipped in behalf of Democrat Bill Owens. Meanwhile, the National Republican Congressional Committee spent roughly $897,000—most of that money spent on ads directly challenging Owens, as opposed to building up Dede Scozzafava, a moderate Republican who dropped out of the race over the weekend.

The Club for Growth are the main supporters of the RINO hunting.

Election night is upon us. NY's polls just closed a few minutes ago and the votes are starting to come in from NJ, where polls were closed at 8pm.

VA looks like they're electing the GOPer for governor. NJ has Christie ahead but Hudson, Bergen, Passaic, and Essex counties have yet to report in serious numbers, so that early advantage is likely to evaporate. It is way too close to call at the moment.

It will probably be closer to 10pm EST when NY-23 results start coming in.

Looking at the NJ returns on the map at Politico.com, so far they have called two counties, one going (D) the other going (R).

However, compared to the 2005 results, the counties switched parties!

Strange. Perhaps a sign of a very, very close race?

You place your ads very subtly within the content, but seem prominent enough to get clicks. I've clicked, and it seems you have some behaviors going on too. My wife was looking at white rugs on overstock, and there on LGF was a ad for white rugs on overstock. I don't feel like they distract from the LGF 'brand' you've built.

re: #115 Killgore Trout

Typo of wank?

Heh. Possibly not too far off

"overly studious person," 1954, Amer.Eng. student slang, popularized 1993 during Clinton administration in U.S.; perhaps a shortening of Brit. slang wonky "shaky, unreliable" (1919), which perhaps is from Ger. wankel- or from from surviving dialectal words based on O.E. wancol "shaky, tottering" (see wench). Or perhaps a variant of Brit. slang wanker "masturbator." It was earlier British naval slang for "midshipman" (1929).

Ah, found it.

How Bloomberg Got Away With Buying New York

Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City has spent over $100 million on his reelection campaign against Democrat Bill Thompson. No candidate has ever spent more of his private fortune on a single political campaign. (This does not make it the most expensive campaign--President Barack Obama raised, and presumably spent, $150 million in a single month of his 2008 campaign.) Bloomberg, an independent candidate, has spent $245 million of his $16 billion fortune on this and his previous two mayoral campaigns. He has also come under fire for using political leverage to circumvent term limits that would have precluded the third term he is now all but guaranteed.

NJ GOV: Christie Continues To Lead
November 3, 2009 9:48 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) |

With 58% of precincts reporting, ex-U.S. Atty Chris Christie (R) is leading Gov. Jon Corzine (D) by 6 points, 50%-44%, with ex-EPA regional admin. Chris Daggett (I) getting 5%. In Bergen Co., a must-win for GOPers in a statewide contest, Christie is still up by some 1K votes with 439 of 553 precincts reporting. It's not an insurmountable lead, but Dems in NJ and DC are nervous.

Meanwhile, Daggett is currently delivering a concession speech from his Basking Ridge HQ.

9:51 -- Nearly an hour after polls closed in NY, results are coming in at a snail's pace. The NYT page has 8% reporting, with Owens winning 53% to Hoffman's 42% and Scozzafava at 4%. No, I don't wear tie-dye or smoke illegal plants, and my hair (such as it is) is still cut to military regulation, but I do speak distinctly in standard English and sometimes articulate well thought-out and even intellectually-grounded opinions. This, of course, is profoundly theatening to the yokels who have taken over this place since I was a child here in the 50s. I've managed to arouse the suspicion of the police more than once like this in fact. I am also sick of cops and other imperious lackeys who routinely violate the law and abuse the people for whom they allegedly work. The metastasizing mass of orange traffic cones doesn't make it any better.

When we moved into our new facility at work, we were given phone numbers that had recently belonged to residences. So, we get robo-calls alll dayyy looonnng!! The weirdest one yet was an offer from a medical tourism outfit.

WTF? "Come to India, have a blast, get your gallbladder removed!"

AND - no matter what Aunt Nancy says, when she has you sitting around the fire telling you ghost stories about how horrible our medical system is, so bad that people actually LEAVE THE COUNTRY to get medical care... remind her that there are 12 times more people entering the country for medical care!

/No more Ghost Stories, Aunt Nancy.

Speaking of hippies, I practically am one here in the armpit of Texas, Lubbock.

I have two months to go in this hellhole, then it's back to a place where American principles more or less prevail.

How uncouth can a place like this really be?

Let me guess: they use the orange traffic cones as a cheap replacement for actual road improvements? I've had a whole Chinese emperor's terra cotta figurine army's worth of cones along the road outside my neighborhood for a year now.

I'm not a fan of Bloomberg (imagine that!). I find it fascinating that billionaires like Bloomberg and Soros really expect us to believe that they favor increasing the taxes on "the rich" by a huge amount. Same way the pols exempted themselves from the do-not-call list, they will find a way to avoid the taxes they raise on others.

I am far from a teabagger. Like I have said before the only thing remotely conservative about me is my firearms collection, but I'll give it a try. I hear a lot of people talking about how NY 23 has been a Republican seat for so long, but I am starting to believe that this really is not Owens' race to lose.

In the 2008 Presidential election NY 23 voted thusly:
Barack Obama 57.1%
John McCain 41.6%
(Obama by 15.1%)

In a race, with a ridiculous level of national attention and Bible Spice deliberately backing Hoffman in an almost overt effort to create a national referendum on Obama's presidency, is it really all that surprising that the early returns are in favor of Owens by a comfortable margin.

I'm not calling the election and I'm fairly certain the numbers will narrow. I won't be surprised if Hoffman wins, but I absolutely believe Nate Silver of 538.com when he states that special elections are a different breed.

Both NJ and VA candidates ran on policies that are diametrically opposed to those of Obama. Less government, lower taxes, lower business taxes, against cap-n-trade, and in VA...for off shore oil drilling...among other things.

There is no way to separate these elections from Obama's policies, just one year after Obama won in both states.
Though the White House will do its best to spin this otherwise

I hope people realize that the reason many are calling these races a loss for Obama because it's going to make more squishy Democrats in Congress less likely to support his agenda because they would be afraid of getting GRIP'd.

That's a logical conclusion and people shouldn't really be trying to call out anyone making that logical statement.

This is still too close to call, but as the votes come in Hoffman doesn't look like he's eroding Owens' lead fast enough.

If Owens does hold on that will be quite an accomplishment for the tea baggers: Putting a district that has been Republican since the Civil War into Democratic hands. The results this evening, in Virginia and New Jersey particularly, show that there are opportunities there for an opposition party. But if conservatives insist on driving out the moderates in an orgy of purging and instead decides to back fringe right wingers then they are very likely to blow that opportunity.

338 hokiepride  Tue, Nov 3, 2009 8:32:41pm

Three lessons tonight
1) McDonnell won by emphasizing taxes and transportation and dumping the socon talking points
2) Chris Christie won on the basis of taxes and corruption
Both candidates won on the basis of independents who are now increasingly important
3) Hoffman is in a bruising battle in a heavily republican district.

The path is clear, a moderate R candidate who campaigns on bread and butter issues wins, one who trots out socon fundie talking points, loses

GOP are you listening?

re: #340 tradewind

True, but Hoffman was endorsed by all the GOP bigwigs like Palin and Thompson and still Owens and him are locked in a dead heat. Christie won a 50-44% in spite of being outspent 3:1 and attacked non-stop. My point is that hopefully the GOP learns the right lessons from VA and NJ.

342 njrob  Tue, Nov 3, 2009 10:19:31pm

re: #340 tradewind

Where did Hoffman trot out any social conservative talking points? And people are mentioning that he was endorsed by Fred Thompson and Sarah Palin, but they neglect to mention that Scozzoflava was endorsed by the Republican party establishment and Newt Gingrich. It was the voters in the district that repudiated her due to her liberal views.

It appears that Hoffman's lack of knowledge of local views and Scozzoflava's shameful endorsement of his opponent did just enough for Owens to win. Carpetbagging makes it difficult to win an election, unless your name is Clinton.

Hoffman was the only person in the race that was a fiscal conservative and not a big government liberal. Remember that before you decide that it's the social con's fault for this defeat.

Furthermore, which is more important to you? Your socially liberal views or your conservative economic views? There are choices that are going to need to be made as most candidate's won't share all your viewpoints (nor mine, but I still gladly supported Christie over Corzine).
