Here’s video of RNC chairman Michael Steele’s statement this morning, with some pointed comments aimed at Sarah Palin, Tim Pawlenty, and RedState blogger Erick Erickson’s claim that the NY-23 loss was a “victory:” Steele Throws Elbow to Palin, Pawlenty on NY-23.

"If you don't live in the district, you don't vote there, your opinion doesn't matter very much,"

Glenn Beck wept.

You betcha, also.

I'll have to say, this Steele guy sure is more interesting now than when he did that movie.

4 Sharmuta  Wed, Nov 4, 2009 11:33:39am

I'm not even sure how the kooks can spin this as a victory in NY 23. They lost. Centrist Americans are not going to elect theocratic-nativists now or ever. I certainly hope the Chairman of the party got the message loud and clear, because it doesn't seem the kookosphere gets it. They'll keep going until the entire structure of the party is in ruins.

I think a lot of people (including Hoffman and many on the right) assumed that once Scozzofava dropped out, Hoffman was a shoo-in. In fact, it just seems to have clarified the choice for a lot of NY-23 voters. The moral? Be careful what you wish for.

There's another video that I think is a suitable substitute for this...

There can be only one...

And it was filmed 250 miles south of NY-23.

Is it just me or did the wins yesterday give him some confidence? The last few times I have seen Steele he seemed tentative when speaking as if afraid he would say something wrong. This time he spoke crisply and didn't hesitate, he actually sounded like a party chairman and advocate.

I like this Steele a lot better than the old one.

11 lawhawk  Wed, Nov 4, 2009 11:38:09am

re: #6 arethusa

Some of the Scozzafava votes jumped to Owens particularly when she endorsed Owens and took the union support with her. Hoffman just didn't resonate with a majority of voters in the district, no matter that Hoffman had out of state backing.

It was the evil of three lessers, and they went with Owens. Don't expect a repeat in a year.

Seriously this is the fight. Its on right now. Focusing "our" (I'm an Indy) grass roots inward, like the attentions here on this very blog, is at a point of fulcrum. Magnified leverage, but it's a real fight for the heart of the Republicans.

A terrible, unknown, carpet bagger, non-national party affiliated candidate gets into the race less than 60 DAYS before the election, takes shots from both the Dem and Repub candidate and loses to the Dem by less than 3% of the vote. MAke no mistake about it. I have no empathy or zeal for Mr. Hoffman and his ilk, but you are really whistling past the graveyard if you think the totality of yeasterdays votes (NJ and Virginia) , INCLUDING a right leaning white woman leading the mayoral race in Atlanta Georgia is an abberation.
Perhaps the "moral" is the people DO speak!

Perhaps it gave him some strength to see the purge tactics wouldn't work in New York. These people have done nothing since he took over the Chairmanship except to undermine him at every possible opportunity. He is the duly elected Chairman of the GOP, and no one seems interested in allowing him to be any sort of leader.

If Glenn Beck, or Sarah Palin, or Tim Pawlenty, or Rush Limbaugh want to lead a movement to victory- I suggest they either support their elected leader, run against him and try to do a better job at leading the party than they seem to feel he's done, or they could leave the party themselves since in all honesty they don't belong.

It should be a teachable moment. Theocon nativists are not going to win elections. It is not "conservatism" and it is not what the party needs to turn to in order to win elections. It cost us an election. Try this nationally, and we will see dem gains in 2010.

Two notes:

1) The last time he ran for office, your people (liberals) threw Oreos at him on stage for being a black Republican.

2) It really worries me about the future of this place when I see you getting updings. Before November of last year, you were our village idiot.

28 BlueFalcon  Wed, Nov 4, 2009 11:48:40am

I think the basic idea is that there used to be a vote in NY-23 for card checks and the public option, and now there isn't. If this is a victory for progressives, it's a damned inconvenient one.

Fi-con's got a little bit, maybe not as much as they wanted, and so-con's came up about even. They gained nothing, they lost nothing. Mil-con's maybe came out the best, since both Owens and Scozzafava pledged support to the local military that Hoffman, so far as I know, was silent on.

Fiorina jumps into high-profile California Senate race

30 lawhawk  Wed, Nov 4, 2009 11:51:42am

Democrats are hoping for a GOP civil war, while trying to ignore the mess in their own backyard, with Obama ally Rep. The WH smacked back claiming Weiner should have run instead.

The fact that he probably has absolutely to do with the site whatsoever except for being tasked with providing some column inches every now and then is beside the point.

He is a to be considered a walking ethnic joke, and parody of affirmative action, appointed solely to show that the GOP has blacks too after Obama was elected.

At least that seems to be some peoples opinion, I just wish they didn't feel quite so free to share it...

48 Spare O'Lake  Wed, Nov 4, 2009 12:08:21pm

If I understand NY#23 correctly, Scuzzafuzza was not chosen in a democratic primary process, and neither was the third party candidate Hoffman. Then the 3rd party candidate was backed by the right wing of the GOP. Then the undemocratically-appointed GOP candidate quit and endorsed her Democrat opponent against the 3rd party candidate Hoffman. So what happened was that the GOP and the Dems got together and defeated the third party candidate. And this is being spun as a GOP victory.
Have I got this right?

I mostly like what Steele has to say here. But I'll note his point about the candidate having been selected by the state Republican Party rings a little hollow; Steele is the national chairman, and needs to both take a leadership position that includes conferencing with those at the state level, and to own his party's failures as well as it's accomplishments. He's correct to defer to the local party leaders where appropriate, but he needs to do more than simply take the phone call announcing their decision. He needs to play a part in the whole decision making process to ensure that what's done at the local level helps leverage party goals at higher levels.

Although simply establishing high-level party goals still seems to be something that requires attention at this point.

Steele is going to have a tough couple of months.

He needs to recruit candidates for 2010. Ones that can win. That will mean fiscal conservative / socially moderate ones for the suburban districts with large independent numbers. Yesterday showed (empirically) that to be the winning combination.

The SoCon troglodytes are incapable of seeing any failure as anything but a sign from God that salvation and universal adoption of faith based politics is just around the corner.

So when Steele holds a conference call with a potential candidate for a swing district, he will be asked very pointedly "How the hell are you going to prevent me from getting hounded by some Hoffman / Glenn Beck candidate from the 'Conservative Party' with endorsements flowing from Republicans - people who are supposedly in my party?"

Steele will have to have a credible answer. Which means war on SoCon assholes who call people RINOs and then turn on the party in an instant.

Steele's statement today is in the right direction.

Faster please.

Have you seen the declared candidates listings? Most of the Republican senate races have seven or eight announced candidates already. Steele isn't going to be picking candidates, he is going to be trying to decide which ones he should back based on the polls. The primary races for 2010 on our side are going to be epic unless half of them drop out.

My 48SX is still going strong after mumble-mumble years that included most of my Engineering schooling.

I lucked out. I guess the original 50G - their current top-of-the-line - sucked like a Hoover, with a crappy keyboard and countless software problems. They basically tried to turn it into a TI, but cheaper and shittier. Customer response was so alarmingly bad that they backpedaled and reworked the whole machine - I think they may have even extended hefty discounts to buyers of the earlier models.

Not sure what took place under Carly's watch, but I know she was responsible for severely cheapening the line originally.

Hi Cyan. Yeah, at first glance I did what Walter did: oops. Second read - close to the line perhaps, but not a jump into the abyss.

It seems to me that Charles doesn't have any problem with folks asking if it might be possible to cover a particular topic. He seems to either say "that may be an interesting subject" or "nah, it's covered elsewhere" or "not really appropriate for this blog". No sarcasm or anything.

But, when people post stuff like, "I've been a poster here for almost fifteen minutes now, and I don't think you're covering (fill in the blank) enough. Get with the program."

Well, as the owner of the blog, Charles has every right to respond with "say hello to my leetle friend!"

Good afternoon, lizards!

Jim DeMint just committed political suicide.
The far right, of course, is going to trumpet him as a true conservative hero.

U.S. Senate finally passes unemployment extension bill

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate on Wednesday easily cleared the last procedural barrier standing in the way of passing legislation to extend unemployment insurance benefits as long as 20 weeks nationwide.

The count was 97 to one, with Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) the only lawmaker to oppose the measure.

The lopsided vote clears the way for final passage of the bill, which, without the consent of Republicans, could take place Thursday morning, at the earliest. There are murmurs on Capitol Hill, however, that an agreement on final passage might happen today.

The bill extends unemployment benefits by at least 14 weeks in all states, with an addition six weeks provided in the 27 states where unemployment rates have topped 8.5 percent. The benefits would not be retroactive, meaning that those whose benefits expired (or will expire) before the president signs the bill won’t be eligible for back-pay to fill the gap.

Bastards.

Of course they're not going to provide retroactive payments, so that people can get caught up on their utility bills and rent, or pull their homes out of foreclosure. They just tack the extra weeks on at the end of a recipients' benefit period and hope that they don't end up having to pay it out.

I'm curious about the laws concerning unemployment benefits and retroactive payments. The state of Michigan did this to me a while back, when they had to make a minor re-determination on my current claim. It took them six damned weeks to do a simple re-determination, and I went for a month and a half without income waiting for my benefits to kick back in. They didn't pay even a single week of retro pay.

They will be running as Republicans in their states primaries for the most part, so all the messy stuff will be over by halfway thru August. Of course after they get done slinging mud and calling each other commies and (gasp) liberals they will have weakened the winners position against the Dems. They only have two or three months to recover from the primary battle and the general election date.

We will be running a lot of exhausted, wounded, and broke candidates in 2010 if the Tea Party makes good on their pledge to disrupt the primaries.

As for the questions about the NJ and VA governor's races raised in #59 above, both Republican candidates distanced themselves from Sarah Palin and did not campaign as fire-breathing conservatives like Hoffman did in NY-23. In New Jersey Corzine had lots of personal negatives, and Christie, to his credit, ran a good race even in the face of a moderate Republican "independent" candidate.

Both are excellent questions, and I don't have a good answer for either of them.

1) I can speculate that Scozzafava may have won the nomination, and Hoffman would not have gotten into it since the primary process was circumvented because of the special election nature of this race. He got in because of dissatisfaction with Scozzafava's selection. Had there been a primary, the GOP in the district would have voted for their preference. Instead, it was handed to them from the party leaders.

2) She stepped down because she saw that her polling was cratering and she didn't have the money to burn on her campaign. It is possible that she was playing triangle offense to go after the conservatives who pushed Hoffman by throwing her support to Owens to thwart a conservative candidate winning, but I don't think they were playing politics on that level. I think she got angry and decided to spite the GOP and conservatives in one lump sum.

re: #156 bosforus

Pure speculation, but the stills that caused her so much trouble came straight from the photographer who took them and coached her. I haven't seen the video, but I'd guess the primary suspect would be the filmmaker - if whoever was working the camera deserves a long, multi-syllable title like that.

To be frank, Ms. Prejean strikes me as someone who possesses what an awful lot of models do - stupidity in abundance. "Yeah, baby, this'll make you a star!" gets bought into by a huge number of such, who either don't know or don't care that the guy working the lens is just trying to get a teenager's top off. Or more.

re: #74 ausador

Have you seen the declared candidates listings? Most of the Republican senate races have seven or eight announced candidates already. Steele isn't going to be picking candidates, he is going to be trying to decide which ones he should back based on the polls. The primary races for 2010 on our side are going to be epic unless half of them drop out.

Senate races are intrinsically different from house races and state races. You are right that the nature of the Senate races (and the egos involved - every member of the Senate and every person aspiring to the Senate is absolutely certain that he/she would be a great POTUS) has the national party doing little until the general election.

If you want to thwart the Democrats it is the house that you are focused on because there are so many swing districts with freshman Dems in play. Many vulnerable seats. Those are the kinds of races I was thinking about.

Wow, Just watched it. Having worked on commercials definitely some dog whistle in there. They show the boss hard at work and struggling. Then having to call in one of his employees that he has to fire. His three employees a white man, a white woman, and a black man. The white man gets summoned into the office taps the black man as he goes by there is a two shot of the black man and the white woman, then slyly cuts to a single of the black man looking on as the white man gets fired.

To know anything about commercial directing and casting is that you're telling a story in 30 seconds a lingering angle, a cut, the casting is very much on purpose.

You may not agree with his politics, but I think most of us would agree that it would be a good thing for more kids to say "Hey I think I will study hard, and get good grades and grow up and maybe get a scholarship to Harvard so I can be like the President." Rather than "Hey, I hope I can grow to be 6'6 with cat like reflexes so I can have cheerleaders do my homework and can drop out of college and go to the NBA."

If it's crazy for a black child to hero worship the first black president, then we have a lot of madhouses to build. The data point is thus: kid's in front of the president, wanted to do something for it. What's wrong with that?

When I was in Jr. high, there were kids shaving Brian Bosworth stripes into their hair, getting their hair cut and their eyebrows notched like Vanilla Ice. That was NORMAL. Happened constantly. If this behavior is crazy, my entire school was crazy. Kids do that stuff.

I did not see that, if anything, not having them collapse vertically was less realistic in the movie. BTW, the movie director wanted to show Muslim holy sites being destroyed with the other faiths, but feared a Fatah.

Ludwig: I have another climate question for you..
For years we have seen an alarming rate of the loss of rain forests in the world...Do you think this loss has contributed to higher CO2 levels today?
I was thinking about that last night...

Of course it has. It is not just the rain forests though. It is also deforestation in general and reduction of sea plant life and algae in particular. This comes from pollution, deforestation and the fact that all the excess carbon alters ph and also kills plants.

Of course, the plants are the primary scrubbers of CO2.

If you want to see the effects of this dramatically, look at the following keeling curves. The second one is for atmospheric oxygen. Notice it is going down.

Thanks goodness for this late tropical storm. Maybe it will do enough damage to warrant blaming Bush, or maybe Gore can run down to Central America and buy some hurricane credits or maybe we can cover this 24/7 on the MSM.

Let's just hope this one doesn't turn out to be a dud.

The stalker site is spamming the nominations for their site. They even nominated LGF for Best Liberal Blog. I suppose that's supposed to be some sort of insult but I think it would be kinda neat if LGF had previously won best liberal and best conservative blog.

I put in nominations for best individual blogger, and best blog design, and then I went and did a "plus 1" vote for each LGF nomination in those categories, and "plus 1" on each LGF nomination for best liberal blog.

I was even able to give my own nomination a "plus 1" vote.

Well, that beats the tar out of other "voices" available in that particular realm and time.

But, to my original comment, look at the what the WSJ author had to say:

"Why not let Mr. Beck and his viewers have their fun? Because ideas have consequences."

In other words, we must silence Beck and viewers (not let them have their fun) because their ideas might result in conequeces not approved of by the author.

I read as letting them have their fun = not commenting on his opinions and antics. I doubt they are calling for his opinions and antics to be censored. The consequences are the criticisms that said opinions and antics receive.

379 acacia  Wed, Nov 4, 2009 6:15:32pm

How in the world is this a rebuke of Palin and Pawlenty? Without directly saying it - because as he says his job is not to select the nominee but to support him or her - he strongly implies that the nominee was the wrong one. He said it was a botched process and that the Republicans should have had an opportunity in a primary to choose who they wanted - which would NOT have been Scozzafavo. The general election turned into both a primary between Hoffman and Scozzafavo as well as a race against the Democrat. Steele correctly notes this could easily have been avoided with letting the Republican voters decide who they want their candidate to be. The "victory" that many Republicans such as Palin and Pawlenty see here - and which Steele does not refute in any way - is that it is very clear now that sticking to core conservative principles is what the Republican voters want. Steele's comment about those outside the district weighing in was no rebuke at all. He said they had the right to do so - as did Newt when he came in to support Scozzafavo (is he being rebuked?). Steele's point on the outsiders is simply that these elections are local in nature, which they are.

Hardly an indication of quality. One could make similar a claim by citing that McDonald's sells more crap burgers than Jack in the Box. True, but it's still crap.

This what you chose to infer, and not what the author seems to imply. I chose to infer that not letting Beck have his fun as mean we should counter his Bircher promoting, conspiracy mongering nincompoopery with sane speech, and refute the garbage he spews with facts.
