Tech Review: Apple’s Magic Mouse

The curvaceous top of the mouse is a multi-touch surface.Apple’s new Magic Mouse is a very nice mousie indeed. No obvious buttons, no scroll wheel, just a sleek multi-touch surface and some groovy new software that lets you scroll with momentum — similar to the way scrolling works on an iPhone.

I own a Wireless Mighty Mouse — the previous generation of Apple Bluetooth mouse — and was never happy with the tracking feel. It had a kind of sloppy quality and tended to lag behind hand movements. Some people don’t even notice it, but it was very annoying to me; so much that I always use a wired Mighty Mouse on my desktop machine.

But the connectivity and response of the Magic Mouse is a vast improvement. It feels exactly like a wired mouse, no perceptible lag at all. And the fact that there’s no scroll wheel that needs cleaning when it gets clogged up with gross finger oil makes this a really maintenance-free mechanism.

You can also use two-finger “swiping” gestures to move forward and back through web pages, photos, or other programs with a paged display. It’s a bit clumsy to hold the sides of the mouse while swiping with the second and third fingers, but maybe I’ll get used to it.

I also notice an improvement in the way the Magic Mouse handles its “one big button” to allow both right and left clicks. The Mighty Mouse would sometimes treat a right click like a left click, often enough to be annoying, but with the Magic Mouse right-clicking works flawlessly.

The Magic Mouse requires two AA batteries, for which I use two Eneloop rechargeables.

This probably won’t be the ultimate mouse for everyone — it has no side buttons or middle button. But the multi-touch surface and momentum scrolling are great features, and I highly recommend this rodent.

(Note: If you’re not buying a new Mac system that includes a Magic Mouse, you’ll also need to download and install Apple’s Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0, available for both Leopard and Snow Leopard.)

Glad to have this review.
I'm asking for an iMac for Christmas . . . it will come with one of these.

*sigh* I can only dream of having a mac

I am not normally off-color, and I am sure it is GREAT at what it does. But G-d help me if that doesn't look like a maxi-pad.

I had a wireless "mighty mouse" from the time I bought my iMac in 2006. It ate batteries like a eats dog treats (my wireless iBook mouse is still going strong after two years without a battery change) and the "multi-button" on top stopped scrolling after six weeks.

After three replacements, my guarantee ran out. No more free mice. I switched back to an old Microsoft mouse and haven't looked back since.

The WORST product from Apple is the mouse. They have NEVER made a good one.

Think: When they first introduced the iMac (whenever it was(, they still gave you a goddam ONE-BUTTON MOUSE like you got when you first bought your MacIntosh a hundred years ago.

Anybody who buys an Apple mouse and still likes it after ten months, I'll buy you a beer.

This mouse makes me wish I had a nice Mac desktop. From what I've heard the Magic Mouse doesn't work very well with Windows.

Oh man, the old imac puck mouse, back when they were still blue? That was the most hilariously awful mouse I have ever used in my life. I'd get it turned around and then the pointer would be on the wrong side of the screen...

I'm a gamer, so I can't really make use of anything Apple makes besides the iPod. The Magic Mouse looks like really neat technology, but would probably be no good for first-person-shooters. I have a USB Logitech mouse that conforms to my hand, same as I've had for about 15 years.

12 rsquare  Thu, Nov 5, 2009 5:46:57pm

Now I know what to get my wife for Christmas(early), and I'll buy it from amazon.com.
She is a card carrying member of the cult of MAC, but has never found a portable wireless mouse that she has liked to go with her laptop. She complains of hand pain, and I think its because of the fact she always uses the touch pad.

Yeah. The "mighty mouse" was supposed to give you a right- and a left-hand click. Finally. After a million years of hitting "command" and then clicking. Apple had something against multi-function mice from the start.

And after the first antediluvian iMac (which came with a round, unibutton mouse from the Cambrian Age) they did it. You FINALLY got two buttons. But the scroll "ball" died over and over again. Here's my Amazon review. You couldn't give me an Apple mouse with a handjob. I'd rather eat corn husks for the next fifty years. My current mouse is as old as Windows 98 and works fine with my iMac.

I own an iBook, an iMac, an iPod, and an iPhone, and I would rather burn down my house and start over than buy a mouse from Apple.

I had four different "mighty mice" before my warranty ran out. They never gave me anything but trouble.

Thanks. I'll wait till we accrue a hundred million updings for the "magic mouse" and then maybe I'll buy one.

On the other hand I might just donate the money to the widows of Fort Hood.

And it was in the processing center, then spread to the theater, then ABC reported that it had spread over 7 different buildings, and now we're back to one guy in one building, with two pistols, shooting like he's Wyatt Fucking Earp.

Anybody who buys an Apple mouse and still likes it after ten months, I'll buy you a beer.

I've used a Logitech Trackman "wheel" (both regular and wireless) for many years... much quicker to use IMO and more importantly no repetitive movement problems with the wrist.

Only problem is they wear out after about two years of use... but they aren't that expensive.

I would guess even a good shooter under those circumstances (moving target etc) could hit maybe 50%. That's almost a hundred rounds and a lot of reloading.

I bought an Apple Macintosh Performa in the mid 90s. What a lemon it was! Every component died, fortunately while still under warranty. I've stuck with Wintels ever since, and just endured my resulting coolness deficiency.

I think this has been will be the type of target of jihadis in the future. They know that to attack women and children here would be suicidal to them and their cause. They have learned that Americans don't perceive soft target attacks as strong, but rather, weak and cowardly. They have also figured out that those soft target attacks really piss us off. And they know how we CAN wage war if we really want to do so.

Have you seen this?

Fort Hood tragedy: A Muslim’s perspective

Al Siddiq, president of the Islamic Center of Waco, followed the unfolding news of the Fort Hood tragedy anxiously, as a veteran of the U.S. Army himself, as a friend of some Muslim soldiers currently stationed at the Central Texas post and as a Muslim who has become wary of backlash.

Siddiq said the Muslim Islamic community is very concerned that the shooter on Fort Hood was a Muslim because Muslims tend to get all thrown into the same category. Since 9/11, Siddiq said, when an individual Muslim acts stupid, it affects the entire Islamic community. The concern is backlash against other Muslims, he said.

“We’ve been very fortunate in Waco,” Siddiq said. “But there’s always a backlash.” Siddiq said he had a great experience in the U.S. Army, both in Korea and stationed at Fort Campbell.

“That’s what hurts me the most,” he said. “The Army has accommodated Muslims. Not any other Army can offer what the U.S. Army offers.”

152 Walter L. Newton  Thu, Nov 5, 2009 7:40:22pm

"This is a wake up call, it's time to control (not outlaw, not take away) guns a little better. When shit like this is happening you have to ask yourself, who gave that fucker a gun?"

Wait.

Preventing?

So... let me get this straight. It's that guy's job, his responsibilty, because he's a Muslim, to police everyone else of his religion? Is it also my job to prevent gay people from acting out in an irresponsible manner?

I'm just curious. I mean, if it is, I've got to get a pink sherrif's uniform and that Blues Brothers squad car pronto.

Preventing. Yes. Islam is a "religion of peace" innit?

The kooky wacky zany sarcasm angle is nice! But what you actually said makes no earthly sense if I take it with any degree of seriousness.

I Can Has Swine Flu? A Cat Comes Down with H1N1

On Wednesday, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported the first confirmed case of H1N1 in a house pet, a 13-year-old domestic shorthaired cat. The animal likely contracted the virus from its owners, veterinarians say, since two of the three family members living in the cat's household had recently suffered from influenza-like illness. Late last week, when the cat came down with flu-like symptoms — malaise, loss of appetite — its owners brought it to Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine for treatment. The family mentioned to the vet that they had also recently battled illness, which led to testing the pet for H1N1.

re: #173 Killgore Trout

What does suck is that there are Muslim soldiers who serve and serve well. The trick is how to tell the jihad prone soldiers from the rest. I'm not sure how to do that but I do feel for the Muslims who are serving in the military who have to endure suspicion and mistrust.

And that is going to be debated in the next few days.

If you think "Don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue" is unworkable and unjust try to dream up a protocol by which the activities of off duty Muslim personnel are monitored solely on the basis that they are Muslim.

The whole "wasn't the Army watching this guy" set of recriminations that are coming are largely thoughtless.

I do too...a common and well thought out rejection of militant Islam, by Muslims everywhere in this country would be a profound influence...moderate Islam must speak out sooner or later...this is America, we will embrace them...Islam is a powerful force of nature in the lives of Muslims and they are fearful and suspicious of American ideals of common sense, individualism, and freedom of expression...it will take awhile but that is the key to it, imo

That's why all instances of terrorism by Muslims automatically have nothing to do with Islam.

Just keep in mind the shit that Charles is taking for pointing out things like RSMs racism or the incoherent intolerance of the wing nuts.

Not going for equivocation here - just pointing out that it is a very uncomfortable process that doesn't generate instant results and acceptance for those standing against the tide.

There's quite a gulf between acknowledging the existence of radical Islam and believing that every Muslim in the military should tasked with scrutinizing the behavior of everyone else that is Muslim in the military.

He very well could have been for a good long while. Not so much anymore.

206 NJDhockeyfan  Thu, Nov 5, 2009 8:18:02pm

He definitely wasn't a MINO.

Hasan was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being sent to Texas in July. He was apparently upset about being scheduled to deploy overseas, according to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson of Texas, who told Fox News that she was told he may have been targeting specific individuals.

A source tells NPR's Joseph Shapiro that Hasan was put on probation early in his postgraduate work at the Uniformed Service University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. He was disciplined for proselytizing about his Muslim faith with patients and colleagues, according to the source, who worked with him at the time.
