More detail here.

All patients have been taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center. At least four of the eight patients are serious trauma cases.

Dispatchers with the Orlando Fire Department said a shooting with multiple victims was reported on the fourth floor.

At least six ambulances and dozens of police cars and fire engines have arrived at the scene.

Orlando Fire Department spokeswoman Vicky Robles said a shooter has not been taken into custody.

They're trying to find the suspect, and they're not confirming the status on the victims. The news reported said 2 dead, but the police won't confirm anything other than there are multiple victims.

Oh, tell me, who first declared, who first proclaimed that man only does nasty things because he does not know his own real interests; and that if he were enlightened, if his eyes were opened to his real normal interests, man would at once cease to do nasty things, would at once become good and noble because, being enlightened and understanding his real advantage, he would see his own advantage in the good and nothing else… . The only conclusion that can be made right now is that the guy was psycho.

Not all terrorism is ideological and not all ideologues will engage in terror. There are plenty of examples of terrorists who were deliberately 'brainwashed' or forced into terror by way of manipulation. For example, some female suicide bombers were told to 'cleanse' the shame by engaging in terror. If they disagreed, their families were threatened.

For now, Hasans' motives and intent are unknown. That doesn't make his actions less sickening or despicable- we just don't know yet what those motives were.

A spokesman for the Orange County Sherriff’s department has confirmed that the male suspect in the Orlando Gateway Center shooting is named Jason Rodriguez and is wearing a light blue polo shirt and jeans. The suspect is driving a 2002 silver Nissan SUV.

The shooting, in which eight victims were injured, happened on the eighth floor of the high-rise business block, which is now surrounded by SWAT teams.

I'm wondering as a psychologist what would he have been doing in Afghanistan. Doesn't seem like he would have been put on the front lines, but then again- I don't know.

More and more attention is being directed toward identifying servicemembers at risk for psychological conditions while they are in the field. The idea is to catch the condition before it gets fully developed, and either assist the servicemember in-theatre, or else get him/her out of there before things get any worse.

Not uncommon. Pretty smart actually

Someone thats trained in Psych would be more able to see if a soldier on or near the front lines was showing signs of too much stress and needed to be taken out of that situation

Decent CNN article about Hasan:

[Link: www.cnn.com...]

cleared out his belongings, handed out Korans to neighbors, shouting Allahu Akbar, admired the Little Rock, AR shootings

that ain't PTSD

I'm all for waiting for the facts to come out -- as long as it also applies the MSM and their fixation on cramming this round peg into the square PTSD hole. I've lost track of how many articles I've already read that assumed this was some sort of PTSD, with a guy who hasn't even deployed. This HuffPo one is particularly nauseating:

[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

None of the Pentagon's efforts has stemmed the rising tide of soldiers murdering themselves. And now as Hasan has allegedly shown, an off the edge soldier murdering other American soldiers. The army's main concern as always is to keep the bodies moving as quickly as possible to bases, new assignments, deployments, and, of course, the battlefields. Hasan was one of those bodies.

Barf.

On Fort Hood-
CNN shows it was a female police officer that stopped the attack with four hits on the shooter, and got wounded herself. That's damn fine work on her part, I'm upset she got hit. And thrilled she lives.

When I see 4 hits and a survivor I think 9mm. We'll see. I trained with a police instructor/shooting investigator. We used to carefully track all the handgun shootings we could to develop better tactics and procedures. There has been pressure to upgrade the caliber from various sources, (see NH Bank robbery etc) and opposite pressure from those who see bullets as excessive force.

I have this fantasy that one day, a great big booming voice will be heard throughout the world. "Will you idiots stop killing people in my name? If I want someone struck down, I'm well capable of doing it myself!"

On another note, I just saw the news about the Orlando shooting. I think I'll join Noam Saying and Mandy Manners in taking a break from this depressing real world for a while. I treated myself to to my first new book in ages yesterday, the true story of an RAF crew and a Luftwaffe night-fighter pilot battling each other over Germany. Reading that sounds like a good way of spending a saturday afternoon.
