I wonder how many in the studio audience were even familiar with Beck enough to realize how dead-on it was. But it was funny enough even if you didn't know Beck's inflection and his gestures.

By the time he did this skit, it was known by all that Glen Beck would make a full recovery. He didn't do this while the man's life was in danger or some such thing.

I'm flabbergasted tonight to discover that the LGF web server has been running PHP 5, when I thought we were still using version 4. Apparently the new server was set up that way about a year ago, even though I thought we were staying at version 4.
I'm like a kid in a candy shop. PHP 5! New functions! Native JSON support! Simple XML! Cleaner object oriented code. Ahem. OK, I'll calm down.

Stewart is simply playing to his audience, which rarely watches Beck except in YouTube or similar formats. Its because Glenn Beck is an incredibly distinctive character and that Jon Stewart is a very talented actor that makes this so convincing, yet I've only seen a few clips of Beck (at his worst or course); all of the gestures and characterizations that Stewart portrayed of his were instantly recognizable. A job well done!

When I was down in my honeymoon in Jamaica, I wanted to rent a Jet ski and the resort didn't own one so the guy at the aquatic center told me to ask the guy buzzing around the docs if I cold rent his. He told me I could rent it for $80 which I told him was to much as I was a poor kid on his honeymoon. He replied $80 and a bunch of weed to which I replied I really couldn't spend that much cash and I didn't smoke weed. His response... OK $80 and even more weed... so I didn't choose to rent the jet ski...

It suggests to me that Beck's shtick is an affectation. Beck may really believe what he is saying, but the melodrama is just there to stroke his knuckle dragging followers.
I honestly think Beck may not have all of his marbles, in a clinical sense. Not that I am in the least qualified to make that assessment.

The cookbook is priced to make a $5 "profit". The profits are split 50/50 between LGF and Soldier's Angels.
There is a link at the blog, you can take a look at Volume 1 and BUY A COPY if you want (they are printed to order). Pay attention to the artwork for Volume 1, our own Jaunte did that! It's worth the price of the cookbook all by itself.

Barney Frank present during marijuana bust
FOX25 has learned that Congressman Barney Frank was present during a marijuana arrest at James Ready's home in Ogunquit, Maine. Ready is well-known for his relationship with Congressman Frank.
According to a police report, police charged Ready with marijuana possession, cultivation and use of drug paraphernalia in August of 2007. Ready admitted to civil possession and paid a fine. The remaining charges were dismissed in 2008.
Sources tell FOX25 that when Frank was questioned he told police that he did not live in the house and that he only smoked cigars.
Congressman Frank tells FOX25 that he was surprised and disappointed with what police found. He also tells us that he wouldn't recognize a marijuana plant if he saw one because he is, "not a great outdoorsman," and ,"wouldn't recognize most plants."

Life imitating art.
Outgoing autistic student EHS homecoming king
Disabilities like autism can create a barrier from the world making it difficult to reach out and socialize with others.
In an inspiring embrace of acceptance on a mass scale, students at Ellison High School elected Jesse McKenzie their homecoming king, a young man with autism and an infectious outgoing attitude.
As Ellison's three candidates for homecoming king and queen walked to the middle of the football field at halftime of Friday's game, the packed student section chanted Jesse's name.
After the two runners-up were announced, Verna McKenzie embraced her son and friend Kyle Skinner clapped his hands in support.
McKenzie smiled widely as he bore the crown. The fans cheered their approval.
After standing for several photos on the sideline, Jesse indicated he was surprised and pleased and that he knew the sea of students cheering him on really cared about him.

A job well done - and very funny.
What I would give for a fresh Durian.
Last time I was in Surabaya was after a week up in Tretes and then caught the ferry to Bali. Back in the 70s.
Ah, the Durian...haven't developed a taste for them yet, although the smell doesn't bother me much anymore. You may be glad to know that they do have them shipped in nowadays to chinatowns across the USA, though I have been told that they're not quite the same as the original item. (Be prepared to spend about 3 dollars a pound.) It sounds like you have fond memories of your time in Indonesia, (albeit well before my day) so give one a try again...the scent and taste may bring back way more memories!
As for Surabaya, I visited every year between 2004 and 2008...you may be surprised that the core of the old town is still relatively intact, although the city has sprawled far beyond it's 70's boundaries. For a city with very few visitor attractions, there's something about it that makes it so easy to to meet and make friends. Hope to go back there on my Indonesian sojourn next year, finances permitting.

Slumbering Behemoth Fri, Nov 6, 2009 7:57:18pm |
re: #108 prairiefire
Hi Slumbering, talk to me about tri-tip. Is it more tender than an eye of round? Do you marinate it and grill it or roast?
I honestly don't know how it compares to an eye of round, I mostly get Tri-Tip for the price and the fact that it's easy to cook. I always grill it, but I suppose you could roast it as well.
The benefit I get from grilling is that I buy it untrimmed as it is cheaper per pound. It will have about a half inch thick layer of fat on one side. I sear it on the lean side for a bit, then cook it the rest of the way on the fat side, which grills off most of the fat. Direct heat. I keep a squirt gun handy for the inevitable fat/flame flare up.
Sometimes I marinate with some of this mixed with some red wine vinegar, olive oil, and some cloves of crushed garlic. The amounts I use depend on the size of the cut. I marinate no more than 24 hours, as the vinegar starts to really break down the fat after that.
Sometimes I use a simple Pappy's rub, easy and tasty.
I grill until the internal temp reads about 140-145, then take it off and cover it for about 20-30 minutes. This helps the meat reabsorb the juices. Slice it against the grain as this makes for smaller fibers in the meat, which makes it more tender. I use an Appalachian Bow Saw, which can cut sandwich style thin slices.
One of these days, when I get brave, I may try out this paste:
1/2 cup grate Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons dried basil
2 tablespoons dried oregano
1 tablespoon seasoned pepper
4 cloves minced garlic
/Wow. Who knew that all it took to get me to blab on at length was to ask me about friggin' Tri-Tip?

Delbert was one of the first Lubbockians to move to Austin. Waylon, Joe Ely, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, they all made their way down here during the heyday of the Armadillo. I was a lowly Second Louie in pilot training when a classmate invited me to his wedding in Austin in the late 70's. We got there the night before- a Friday- and went to the 'Dillo. It was the damndest thing. A local group, Shiva's Headband, opened and Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen headlined. I vowed that I would live in this town. After I flew jets for a while and did a fair amount of international oil field work, I moved here in '89.
Haven't regretted a minute of it. Great little city.

Racer X Fri, Nov 6, 2009 8:05:55pm |
Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse- sized Tazer.
Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target. I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat.
So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and tazer in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.
What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best.. .
I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, 'don't do it dipshit,' reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and . .
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD . . WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION ... . WHAT THE HELL!!!
I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs? The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room.
Note: If you ever feel compelled to 'mug' yourself with a tazer, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor.. A three second burst would be considered conservative?
IT HURT LIKE HELL!!!
A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling.
Apparently I pooped on myself, but was too numb to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head which I believe came from my hair. I'm still looking for my nuts and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return!
P.S... My wife, can't stop laughing about my experience, loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it!
If you think education is difficult, try being stupid

re: #182 Racer X
I had no control over the drooling.Apparently I pooped on myself, but was too numb to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone.
Well, the traditional 15th anniversary gift is crystal, but if meth is not available, a taser is right up there on the Romantic Gift List.
;-)

Journalists often like to start out an interview with a softball question to break the ice before moving on to controversial topics. This tactic clearly doesn't work on former Polish President and Solidarity leader Lech Walesa:
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Are you looking forward to travelling to Berlin on Monday for the 20th anniversary celebration of the fall of the Berlin Wall?
Walesa: It's not important whether I'm looking forward to it or not. I am a politician who played an important role in the reunification of Germany and I was invited to take part in the celebration. It's not like a piece of candy handed out to a sweet little boy.

She amazes me because she can go from looking really, really polished and beautifully dressed in some photos to just ... tacky / frumpy in others. Maybe that makes her a typical American woman, I don't know, but for a First Lady, her style is remarkably inconsistent.

/That must not be the Daily Show that I know/
I watch Morning Joe, and occasionally Way Too Early, if I am forced to be up at that time of day. The rest of MSNBC's broadcast day is hopeless.
Reasonable people may disagree, of course.
Except when it comes to KaYo. You can't knock Beck and leave out Olbermann , because while he's a different flavor, he's the same kind of insane.
Beck and Olbermann's techniques aren't totally dissimilar, there's some of that similar zaniness. Beck comes from morning zoo format shock jock radio. Olbermann comes from Sportscenter. They're both used to having their way as entertainers, they're both personalities first, and used to getting away with stuff.
But to be fair, Beck's rhetoric is nastier than Olbermann's, overall. Beck is arguably fucking up the GOP. Olbermann isn't really damaging the Democratic party, doesn't elevate completely implausible conspiracy theories (Rockefeller!) and does not have the influence Beck does.
if you want leftist rhetoric that is as harsh as Beck, I got just the dude. A guy named Mike Malloy who is screaming bonkers on syndicated talk radio and XM. Very angry, very conspiracy-theory minded. Like almost Alex-Jones levels. And thankfully fringey.
(I don't mind Scarborough. Don't usually agree with him, and I'm never up that early, but he's easy to watch. And he seems to intensely dislike the Gold-Standard-Beardo-Tshirt wing of his party)

Maybe that's why it's the only part of Texas I'd actually like! I'm not gay, but I've always liked the arts scene and have typically found that the neighborhoods that they thrive in are also quite gay friendly. I guess it's that whole "acceptance" thang! And btw, that's a wonderful thang!
Well, everybody knows (wink) that the only gay people in Texas live in Houston, Dallas, and Austin. Houston and Dallas have enclaves (the Montrose and Deep Elum/Lower Greeneville), but in Austin, not so much. I have lots of gay couples in my 'hood, and it is common throughout the City. I'm not a big fan of Olbermann, don't get me wrong. I don't like Olbermann's Special Comments. They make my skin crawl. And he's apparently a monster to work for, I definitely know all about that. I'm a geek for behind the scenes sausage-being-made stuff about TV and radio personalities.
Still, I think it's a matter of potential crazy versus fully realized crazy. Beck is at the top of the mountain, and his show's format is more "pure". It's him throwing everything he's got at the audience. Olbermann's show is sort of a bunch of disorganized scattered stuff, some FARK news-of-the-weird thrown in, some snarky zings, some pop culture riffing from guests. The show's not that focused.

I wasn't clear. Austin has a very healthy gay population, but they are not in "gay enclaves" like Houston and Dallas. They are disseminated throughout the town.
As far as the Jewish population is concerned, again, we have a healthy cohort here, active in politics and accepted as equal members of the polity. It's not an issue.
Which is very nice indeed.

WOW...just amazing! Such a journey could not replicated today as so many things have changed (for one, Pertamina had to raise gas prices 300% in the last 5 years, so local travel isn't quite the bargain it used to be); yet many of the wonderful places you saw are undoubtedly still around (albeit in a semi-westernized state). The Indonesian military is now a reduced presence in the country, as the rise of democracy during the past 10 years has (hopefully) put them permanently in their barracks. As for focusing on Indonesia, even though the place (and a few of its people) have given me a bit of anguish over the years, I happily consider it my second-favorite country in the world!

I'll disagree. The actions of a crazed individual is not terrorism. That's lazy, and you know it.
George Hennard drove his truck into the front of a Luby's restaurant in Killeen (just outside of Fort Hood) in 1991 and shot 23 people to death. Was that terrorism or just nuts?

re: #400 The Sanity Inspector
[Link: warintel.blogspot.com...]
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 06, 2009
Malik Nadal Hasan is a terrorist.
Malik Nadal Hasan is a terrorist.
By Gerald Internet Anthropologist Think Tank.
Our paradigm intel strongly classifies him as a terrorist.
A question remains was he home grown or did he have a handler?
The has been a lot made about a posting he made comparing some one that throws himself on a grenade to a Suicide bomber.
His statement is factual and correct.
That is what THEY think.
What I've seen on the net he never
embraces suicide bombing.
The statement it's self is not
a threat of endorsement.
There is no indication of terrorist
intent, he generalizes the statement.
he doesn't say American, he says
the Islamic enemy, applicable to
any time frame in history.
Alot more can be gleaned from his
blog, we sure would like to analyze it.
It will tell if he had a handler or was
self ordained. Any one have the URL?
Fort Hood seems to functioned during
this crisis as a well oiled machine.
Fast heavy reaction team,
universal warning to all on the fort
to stay inside via PA system, and sirens
so the notice couldn't go unnoticed.
A good example for other cities to study.
The biggest fault may also indicate its
triaged focus.
These troops are battle field immunized.
In their expert experience those type wounds are fatal.
There isn't much doubt their focus was
very practical, and battle field oriented.
..
Move out the wounded, clear out the area
and bring over whelming force to the play.
After the job was done they discovered
the perp wasn't dead.
And they dispatched a CID agent with
the perp at all times.
OUTSTANDING JOB.
Back to Malik Nadal Hasan.
He targeted troops in the position,
location that represented those
troops going overseas on deployment.
This may speak to his terrorist motivations.
Shooting people he knew?
Patients?
He had just been ordered to Iraq.
Paradigm Intelligence indicates he was afraid of what other Muslims in Iraq would think of his work and position with the US Army. No indications he was afraid of death in Iraq.
He had two weapons and had to reload
several times. That indicates planning.
He was an American, lived in America
all his life.
He served eight years as an enlisted soldier.
He also served in the ROTC as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg.
He received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry there in 1997.
Key will be tracking his radicalization,
and if one person was prominent in his
Bastardization of Islam.
That person is the Handler.
See if the handler has connections
to al Qaeda.
The videos of him earlier in the day
show him in traditional Muslim garb.
Functioning normally and making
transactions.
That tape tends to rule out a psychotic
break. A personality break maybe?
He spent 6 years helping those troops
with the heaviest psychological burdens
and listening to the worst of the worst
in heavy war disasters.
Before the new counseling program,
Fort Hood had 10 suicides, sounds heavy duty.
The paradigm intel suggests a split between his military side and the Bastardized Muslim side, the Muslim part that got twisted real bad.
Something that argues for a handler
is the method of attack.
The previous 5 attacks in America
all involved explosives.
This attack was with two side arms.
Expect more of same.
Was it a tactic transition to avoid
detection or something else.
There is no question about his intelligence
and the higher the intelligence the more
severe the reaction.
His blog, computer, phone records
purchase of weapons and defense
methods will explain most of our
questions
Gerald
Anthropologist
Some chatter about Gov removing his Face book page.

NYC won't miss me that much, LOL. Worldwide indifference to Indonesia is nothing new, so thats just fine with me (gives me more of the place to myself!) Thanksgiving is when I usually travel over there; sadly this year, my finances do not permit such an excursion, so you'll have to remember to share your Korea stories when you return.

Almost everyone has forgotten about Michelle Bachman's little anti-healthcare Tea Party at the Capitol because of the other events that day. It did finally manage to get a few mentions in the press, mainly by those surprised that the GOP leadership had joined in.
When John Boehner, the Republican leader of the House, appeared at the Tea Party rally at the Capitol on Thursday afternoon, it was a dramatic signal: The wing-nuts have taken over the GOP.
Think I'm being harsh? The angry folks at the protest -- which attracted several thousand conservatives -- held up signs with messages of hate: "Get the Red Out of the White House," "Waterboard Congress," "Ken-ya Trust Obama?" One called the president a "Traitor to the U.S. Constitution." Another sign showed pictures of dead bodies at the Dachau concentration camp and compared health care reform to the Holocaust. A different placard depicted Obama as Sambo. Yes, Sambo. Another read, "Obama takes his orders from the Rothchilds" -- a reference to the anti-Semitic conspiracy theory holding that one evil Jewish family has manipulated events around the globe for decades.
(snip)
A recent poll found that only 25 percent of Americans have a positive opinion of the Republican Party (compared to 42 percent for the Democrats). Hanging out with "Nazi"-shouters who wave racist and hateful signs is not likely to boost the popular appeal of congressional Republicans. Boehner and company are not merely playing to the base; they're saddling up with the worst elements of the right. It won't be a pretty ride.
In the middle of the column he talks about Virginia and NewJersey and what was done right in the wins there. Not a bad assesment really.

When you get back take a drive up to Tretes. About an hour or so up in the mountains from Surabaya. Old Dutch resort.
The Dutch built it there for good reason.
One hotel is built over a stream - it runs thru the lobby. Fascinating place to kick back - explore, whatever. I would imagine they still rent horses - if you're into riding this is one of the best places on the planet to do it.
I've been putting off writing a book for over 30 years. This weekend seems a good time to begin. Thanks for the jump-start!
Tretes sounds really nice, kind of like how Bogor is to Jakarta. Hadn't heard of it before, but will be sure to add it to my itinerary next year, sans the horses as I get nightmares of ending up like Christopher Reeve due to my excess height and partiality to clumsiness. (Actually, google shows that it had gained notoriety as a red-light district...interesting...)
No doubt a book (with lots of photos, hopefully) would be a great way to tell the best of your Indonesia stories! Its never too late to get started on a good thing, and if I can be of assistance in any way, would be glad to lend a hand.

George Hennard drove his truck into the front of a Luby's restaurant in Killeen (just outside of Fort Hood) in 1991 and shot 23 people to death. Was that terrorism or just nuts?
I guess we're just perceiving this incident differently, then. I've heard so many excuses rationales for terrorism over the years. Poverty. Ignorance. Anger at injustice, or our foreign policy. Actually, the hot dog eating contest requires far more waiting than action; its the kind of thing (like spending New Year's Eve in Times Square) that you do only once for the experience. I've ridden several other wooden coasters, and none of them compare to the Cyclone, particularly that 2nd drop so soon after the 1st! The next 10 years promises lots of new development at the old joint, so you may want to come over and see it before it changes for good...

Concur. This guy had serious issues and its possible he might have snapped anyway, but Radical Islam was, by all indications, a major factor in how and when he snapped. It also probably increased the chances for a breakdown by pumping murderous propaganda into his head. Obviously it is a form of terrorism when someone drives their truck through a restaurant window and proceeds to kill 23 random people.
Islamic terrorism is its own sub-category, sometimes organized and sometimes freelance. Sometimes political, religious, national, or just for "man-hood".
Should a skinhead be out with his mates and randomly come across a gay black man and kick him to death, is that not a hate crime? Or were they just nuts.?
When an Israeli drives into the wrong area and gets lynched that is terrorism also, not the work of the metaly ill.

The question begs - how did he get radicalized and did he have a handler.
Let me put it more plainly:
Sixty miles north of Fort Hood is an outlet mall in Hillsboro. If he was *handled*, why wouldn't he attack the general populace? If the point was a terror attack, what could be more viscous than an attack on grandma and grandpa looking for deals on winter coats? With no real security, he could have walked through that mall and killed several dozens.
No, he attacked the source of his pain. The fact was that he had a psychic break and he killed what was closest to his pain. Handlers? They would have done a much better job.
Here's a really sad fact. I apologize for mentioning it, but it's a hard fact. I'm a military guy, and I know it's true. The fact that this attack took place at Fort Hood will soften the affect on the population in general. If there had been an attack on a shopping mall, people's heads would be on fire. As long as it was restricted to a military base, the general population will be sheeple, in the long run. They're give a shit factor will last about five days.
Soldiers are expected to die. Yes it sucks. Big time.

A form of terrorism?
What form would that be?
How about just bull-goose crazy?

I try not to use fiction to make a real-world point, but I'm reminded of the Joker telling Harvey Dent how it's "all part of the plan."

He doesn't need a "handler" to be a terrorist. A psychic break does not explain his preparation and effective execution. He was well prepared, armed, trained and picked a location were he could commit an intentional massacre.

The whole issue of how we define "terrorism" is huge. We can define it individually, and ignore the collective influence on each persons' psyche. or we can overstretch it so that the individuality involved is not taken seriously. We should take each seriously; while acknowledging that the issue is supremely complicated. "Terrorism" is never simple.

That about sums up my opinion, such as it is, based on everything we know to date, the mans religious zealotry overcame him. We have already heard a lot of information that supports this view from past and present associates and co-workers. It seems that this was building up over time, the man didn't just 'snap' one day and start shooting anyone present around him, nor was he legally insane (crazy). He planned for it, gave possessions away, said goodbye to friends, brought weapons and ammo onto the base, went to where there were a lot of targets, and then shot methodically and very competently everyone he could before he was disabled.
This was a lone religious zealot, one who decided that Islamic martyrdom was the correct course of action against the infidel westerners who were waging war against Islam. I'll be very surprised if anything else we learn changes that view at all.

I believe you misunderstand, a person having a psychotic episode may in-fact commit a crime, such as murder, rape or pedophilia. He is still a murderer, rapists and pedophile.
In this case, Major Malik Hasan chose to commit a terrorist act, his exact mental state is of secondary importance. He clearly knew what he was doing and did it will precision and preparation.

Japan controlled the area with this airfield during WII. In June of 43? The Allies had enough and began bombing around the clock for weeks on end. Thus the moonscape.
A few Aussie oil workers had been there before me. I spent a month in the area and would have my chopper pilot drop me off when I had the time.
All the aircraft were salvaged during the 80s .. I heard it's now a golf course.
The planes were not shot down - they were on the ground.
I put up a few more. Thot I had one of a Zero with folding wing tips from a carrier ... nuts can't find it.

I agree with this. For years, I have been disgusted with these politicians who jump on the military bandwagon for support when in reality they were the first ones to abandon the military when it was their time to serve.
The GOP has been pro-military for years but has been inexplicably infested with draft dodgers who think it's fine for everyone but themselves to serve.

A lone nut murdering 13 people and seriously wounding 30 is not terrorism.
If he had bombed a subway train or a building or attacked a civillian building leaving purposeful evidence that others may follow - those are when i believe it meets the test for terrorism.
There is not a fine line between "going postal" and terrorism.
If it's proven to be some plot to aid the establishment of the Caliphate or hasten the "great satans" pull out from Afghanistan - then call it terrorism. Until then it's someone who went over the edge with a loaded weapon.
Once you call this terrorism - you have to call every massacre of co-workers terrorsim. thats a bad road.
