Video: Republicans Gone Wild

Charles Johnsonfollow me on twitter
Politics • Sat Nov 7, 2009 at 10:41 am PST • Views: 258

I watched this earlier and was going to export from EyeTV and upload it to YouTube, but Think Progress beat me to it so I’ll use their video.

It’s not one of the GOP’s finest moments (to put it mildly), as House Republicans shout, scream, and make repetitive objections over the members of the Democratic Women’s Caucus. But this is probably going to be a big hit with the TPers.

Again we’re seeing the influence of the social conservative wing on the GOP, because the big issue today is the Stupak abortion amendment, and the Democratic Women’s Caucus is pro-choice. So we get treated to the lovely spectacle of Republicans openly opposed to letting women have a voice in an important debate, and acting like boorish sexist pigs.

As stated in the last thread, the minority leader asked Dingle how to go about objections. Dingle told him at the outset that the minority could object as each dem came up to give their unanimous consent.
During the dem parade to the mic. the repubs did just that. At that time Dingle changed the "rule" he set up

It did turn into a circus, but one that Dingle set up

I admit, it's not helpful, but, under these circumstances, nothing they can say or do will change or slow down the inevitability of a tremendously expansive reach of the federal government into a significant sector of the American economy. It will almost certainly be far more expensive than advertised (what isn't?), and will almost certainly discourage medical education and healthcare research and investment.

If you have been watching it from the beginning then you would note that the House Parliamentarian was guiding Dingle.
No rules were broken, I think this is the way things are done.

Once the Dems got done the Republicans began with "tyranny" "killing freedom" and "killing jobs" show and the Democrats allowed them to have their say without interrupting or yelling.

Wow- that is really unbecoming.

I have seen similar legislative debates get as heated, and the minority side was unfairly silenced in that case, but they did not give in to unprofessionalism. They instead protested silently by duct taping their mouths (there were some great pics in the paper of this). But the bullying, and interruptions is ugly and uncalled for , and for them to think the American people would be impressed is just wrong. I want to know what all sides in this debate have to say, and this ugly tactic is wrong.

the subject of this thread and the previous thread are stark examples of how the GOP turns off two major groups that COULD make it the leading party in the country. It's tin ear towards the sensitivities of many Jews as illustrated by the exploitation of the Holocaust (previous thread) is deadly when it comes to getting Jews to embrace the GOP. And it's hysteria regarding the abortion issue not only turns off appx 100% of liberal minded women (a group that mostly rejects the GOP), but also many sympathetic men who never want to see women in need of abortions forced to endure dangerous back alley procedures.

Sorry, Sharm, They weren't objecting to that. What each congressperson was supposeed to do was give their "unanimous consent". Thats what the objection(s) were too. Each congressperson (both sides, btw) took it upon themselves to pontificate on point or another of the bill

Thats what I stated in the last thread. One has to state an objection until recognized. If not, one re-states the objection. Dingle didn't "recognize" the objection

That said, what the repubs SHOULD have down is walk out except for the minority leader who would ONCE EACH time quietky object until the conga line of dems finished

I already said it turned into a circus, but much of that lays at the feet of what Dingle did at the beginning

Right now, they are standing up one at a time for a minute apiece, 1st a dem, then a repub, then a dem, then a repub, etc etc and at the OUTSET it was stated no objections/ interruptions

I am opposed to government run healthcare for everybody.

It's my understanding that the Public Option, in the form it is in the the Reid compromise legislation, would have such strict elegibilty limitations that only something like 10% of the workforce would have it as a choice. That would be pretty unfortunate IMO, but in its current incarnation, definitely not government run healthcare for everybody.

I have absolutely no problem with Medicare/Medicaid for those with health concerns that are not affordably insured through the private sector.

Do that many people really feel their health concerns are affordably addressed through their private insurer? Especially for those who find out how much of their work compensation is going to their health care, those who purchase their own insurance, those who know the recission and claims denial rate of their insurer (which really upends the peace-of-mind aspect of insurance), or who have experienced a large donut hole deductible followed by an anemic coinsurance rate, or have hit their maximum annual cap / lifetime cap.

Unless of course you think that 2000 pages of inane gobbledygook is great for our nation. Just a peek:

"(a) Outpatient Hospitals - (1) In General - Section 1833(t)(3)(C)(iv) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 1395(t)(3)(C)(iv)) is amended - (A) in the first sentence - (i) by inserting "(which is subject to the productivity adjustment described in subclause (II) of such section)" after "1886(b)(3)(B)(iii); and (ii) by inserting "(but not below 0)" after "reduced"; and (B) in the second sentence, by inserting "and which is subject, beginning with 2010 to the productivity adjustment described in section 1886(b)(3)(B)(iii)(II)".

Yeah, I can see healthcare costs dropping dramatically and the quality of care going through the roof.

Whatever. I give up. I'm a dinosaur. Makes me wonder how the ENTIRE foundation of our federal government and unified nation was handwritten on five pages. We've lost our way and I don't think it's recoverable at this point.

Medicare as a failure as well. It has nothing to do with how I feel about old folks for Pete's sake.

Healthcare is so expensive now BECAUSE government got involved in the first place. In fact, Medicare was the biggest culprit that kick-started the skyrocketing costs. The government has caused this mess. By design. The bureaucrats are about to get what they've dreaming about for decades.

More people die from auto accidents. Let's just ban cars. In fact, let's have a bill that does just that. Think of all the lives we could save!

You're simply gullible beyond belief if you believe this healthcare boondoggle entitlement is going to save money. How much in unfunded liabilities do we now have from Medicare alone? Something like 30 trillion? Great, let's expand that excellent track record to the other 7/8 of Americans. Party on!

From the report and the blog posting:

"Those estimates are all subject to substantial uncertainty."

And, though long, here's a nice little bit:

"The bill would put into effect (or leave in effect) a number of procedures that might be difficult to maintain over a long period of time. It would leave in place the 21 percent reduction in the payment rates for physicians currently scheduled for 2010. At the same time, the bill includes a number of provisions that would constrain payment rates for other providers of Medicare services. In particular, increases in payment rates for many providers would be held below the rate of inflation (in expectation of ongoing productivity improvements in the delivery of health care). Based on the extrapolation described above, CBO expects that Medicare spending under the bill would increase at an average annual rate of roughly 6 percent during the next two decades—well below the roughly 8 percent annual growth rate of the past two decades, despite a growing number of Medicare beneficiaries as the baby-boom generation retires. Based on the same extrapolation, Medicare spending per beneficiary under the bill would increase by roughly 4 percent per year, on average, during the next two decades—compared with a 7 percent average growth rate (excluding the effect of establishing Part D) during the past two decades."

People in the UK pay half as much per person as we do for their healthcare, and they have a higher life expectancy than we do. It looks to me like nationalized health care is a far better deal than privatized health care. The government doesn't have to charge extra on its premiums since there is no motivation for profit, the government can buy drugs in bulk for cheaper because its bargaining for the entire country and the government can give poor people preventative care so they wont have to go to the emergency room and cost us a lot of money.

At the minimum, providing the poor an absolutely basic level of preventative care will save us all money. When poor people go to the emergency room, they have no money to pay for expensive surgeries and treatments, so we ultimately pay for them. If we give them preventative care at a subsidized cost, they wont have to go to the emergency room and we wont have to spend money on their treatments.

Another article on the same subject from today:

Obama leaning toward 34,000 more troops for Afghanistan

As it now stands, the administration's plan calls for sending three Army brigades from the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. and the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. and a Marine brigade, for a total of as many as 23,000 additional combat and support troops.

Another 7,000 troops would man and support a new division headquarters for the international force's Regional Command (RC) South in Kandahar, the Taliban birthplace where the U.S. is due to take command in 2010. Some 4,000 additional U.S. trainers are likely to be sent as well, the officials said.
...
The officials, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss internal administration planning, cautioned that Obama's decision isn't final, and won't be until after administration officials discuss it with the NATO allies at a Nov. 23 meeting of the alliance's North Atlantic Council and its Military Committee.

Right now, they are standing up one at a time for a minute apiece, 1st a dem, then a repub, then a dem, then a repub, etc etc and at the OUTSET it was stated no objections/ interruptions

Let me see if I can rephrase your point through metaphor. If Dingle hadn't handed out too much rope at the beginning, then the Republicans would not have used it to tie a noose around the neck of their collective dignity. Therefore it is largely Dingle's fault that the Republicans weren't capable of responsibility handling the slack they were (improperly) given. Is that about right?

You are correct. Getting right down to core principles, Conservatism demands that people be able to make their own decisions and that government stay the hell out of people's personal lives. Goldwater came to the same conclusion, stating unequivocally that adherence to core Conservative principles demanded support for gay rights.

He was also revulsed by the religious right and their intolerance to even the most minute departure from their dogma. Here, the objection was even simpler: what they want is at odds with the nation's Constitution at the most basic level. But he found arguing with them pointless - it was impossible to hold rational discussions with emotional juveniles who fled to faith whenever their brains were challenged.

We desperately need people of Goldwater's caliber. Bill Buckley, too, is sorely missed these days, and his sudden absence is partly responsible for the renewed zeal among the Birchers, in particular, and their hangers-on in general.

Blech. You linked to Think Progress. Their comment section is a fountainhead of bile and vitriol.

I have to admit this is so scandalous. Andrew Jackson would be outraged.

I will not play anymore. I will do what I have to do as I see fit and frankly, my fellow panhandling citizens (about 50% of us now) can go screw themselves as I'm going to (snip)

Would that be welfare mothers or AIG execs?

I love how the liberals/Democrats whine, cry and blabber how the mean old republicans are protesting and calling the president and Democrats names. For eight years, these same people were calling the President of the United States the most vile things. It amazes me that these same people (MSNBC is the obvious leader) could act outraged that it is being directed at President Obama.
The lesson learned is what goes around comes around. If you want your candidate treated with respect and dignity, you need to act with respect and dignity.
For the record I am a registered Libertarian so I like sitting on the sidelines and watching the two sides snipe at each other. As a 3d party observer though, I must say the Democrats are the biggest whiners.

re: #81 Sharmuta

Yes- they are acting like sexist pigs to stand there and object to a Congresswoman supporting more women getting into medical schools. What in the world is objectionable about that?!

I am not completely sure, but I thought this whole thing got started because the debate closure vote was going to fall at the 1pm-2pm time slot. This was the time of the anti-bill protest rally today which would require the members to enter back into the house to vote while the rally was going on.

Unless Charles has some information beyond the link to this video, the sexist comment is unwarranted.

re: #229 jonik

So you are saying that the official legislative chamber behavior, dignity and integrity expressed by elected Party B representatives today is properly preconditioned on the level of behavior, dignity and integrity expressed by Party A sided street-protesters, bloggers, and media supporters in the past? Pardon me if that comes off as a willful kind of false equivalence.

I have Epilepsy was recently put on Medicare. Barry-Care is going to screw up the closest thing to health insurance I've had in years.

So let me get this straight, you're upset because the legislation for government run health care will change your government run health care? Why don't you have private insurance?
