How does time break down
with no marker, things slow down.
A conference of the strange
and your family is deranged

I could tell you what I'm thinking
while we sit here drinking
but I'm not sure where to start

Here is an interesting article from NPR on the MSM and jumping to conclusions without all the facts.

The Bombastic Fog Engulfs Fort Hood

The opening line is great.

Expecting journalists not to speculate is like expecting chimps not to scratch themselves. It's our nature.

Interesting news from my husband, for anyone who was feeling bad for themselves about government interference in their lives. Apparently two giant Chinese government agencies are fighting at this very moment about whether World of Warcraft's new server provider is acceptable. The fate of WoW in China hangs in the balance.

uTorrent is great because it's got an easy interface and a low footprint. And the instructions I linked to are step-by-step for uTorrent specifically, so it shouldn't be too hard to get it up and running.

Great thing about modern China is you have this grafting of high-tech onto an ancient culture. ALL disputes, when they turn public, turn very ugly very quickly. I recall many times seeing my Chinese employers go on a tear after someone. The really bad ones are when they go into the central courtyard - the place is laid out like one of the old Beijing hutong houses - and start berating the person in both English and Chinese, to make sure EVERYONE gets the full benefit of their spleen, and to maximize damage to character and reputation.

What they generally do is the drums actually lock into a groove and the guitars play against the drums in different time signatures. It has this very maze-like quality when they do it. But Tomas Haake is considered to be one of the greatest metal drummers of all time. The guy is terrifying to behold.

It's very stressful when you're raiding. Think of it as like calling audibles in football. There's 40 people in some of those raids and they need to work in concert. That's mostly why I dont play WoW, gaming is more of a solitary, relaxing pursuit for me, I park in front of the HD late at night with a beer, I don't want the responsibility of being part of a team.

The concept of "face" is subject to a great deal of exaggeration, and in recognizing that fact, many Westerners have sort of forgotten that it does exist, and is a real cultural currency still in China. In general, I've seen my Chinese coworkers and employers suffer in varying degrees of silence for ages from something until they reach that magic tipping point. Then, all bets are off.

you know it's about to start when the boss-ladys says "Why do you slap my face? I grew up eating rice!" which sounds odd but makes sense in the culture ("You can't treat me like a beast or a peasant - I ate rice like a regular, respectable person, and am due respect."). Then, all bets are off, and nothing short of an abject public apology can guarantee that the thing will end. Even then, if the damage is bad enough, they'll accept the apology, write an ambiguous letter of recommendation, and gently encourage the offending party to seek new and more expansive scopes for his or her many talents.

Actually, I had a big conversation with my brother about that, how there's two bands that are unassailable, that kids in their teens who are into rock music generally respect. One is Zep, the other is Floyd. I have seen more skinny 14 year olds around my neighborhood with Floyd shirts over the last few years... hope for the future!

Personally, I'm into a lot of music that was created before I was born. The Beatles, The Stones, Blue Oyster Cult, Jefferson Airplane, Atomic Rooster, Hawkwind... and a lot of the newer bands I like now owe their sound to 60's psychedelic music. They heavy it up of course, but it's there.

Another interesting pattern i've noticed is the sharing of the outrage. If someone has offended you sufficiently in private, you make damned sure EVERYBODY hears about it, in loud, profane, and full detail, until they are themselves so outraged by it that they feel compelled to share the story of the injustice done to you with others. These spats, when they go critical, can sweep up whole departments where i work.

World of Warcraft Gold Farming – The Seedy Underbelly of Online Gaming

From the article.

"What might be a startling statistic. It’s estimated that nearly 1 million people in China are working for as little as $100 a month by farming gold for these places to sell to us lazy bastards in America and Europe."

One of my students once turned to me and asked if I had heard of a band called Led Zeppelin. "Yes, hon," I said.

"They're AMAZING," she said, very solemnly. Look, if you were born in 1994...

LOL Kids are amazing.. Last month my favorite band was the King of Leon but after their words going through my head 24/7 I'm going need somebody over and over.. I switched to Deathcab for Cutie.. I'm now over them looking for a new band to burn out on..

Repost from the wee hours of the morning, for those who were not awake and might like it:

If you want to actually see where all the money in the budget goes then this graphic is for you. You can make it full screen, zoom in, and navigate around it by dragging. It shows all the departments as graphic icons with their spending shown as smaller icons, all Icons are scaled by the amount spent. It is actually pretty enough and cool enough just to play with for awhile even if your not that into the budget.

re: #73 WindUpBird

I taught for a couple of years at a middle school where there was an impassable split down the middle of the school about music. The white kids and the second-third-fourth-generation Asian and Latino kids listened to rock/indy. The black kids and the immigrant/first-generation Asian and Latino kids listened to hip-hop/R&B/reggaeton. We had the world's most amazing DJ for our dances, who would somehow make peace and manage to play some stuff all the kids liked.

He once informed the hip-hop crowd that if they would dance to the Green Day number, he would play some 50 Cent, but only if they danced. One of them went up to the stage. "What do you mean, how do you dance to rock?" I heard the DJ saying back. "You just dance! Move your arms around or something!"

He was also very good at dealing with kids from other schools who crashed our dances.

I was in the drive-through getting coffee for self and cookies for the shareholders (kids) when I saw this kid - maybe 18 or 19 - absolutely rocking out to Tom Tom Club's Genius of Love.

"Tom Tom Club, eh?" I said.

"That who this is? Love the retro on this one. They got an album out now?"

"Not for the past 25 years."

Recollect the time the accounting department here went to war with the physical plant division. Seems that some one in accounting spread a rumor to the effect that the nephew of one of the owners had slapped his girlfriend. Well, the accounting department was headed up by the girlfriend's aunt, who, when she heard the rumor, went to the leadership to get justice (what that was, and how it was to happen, no one knew, but they trusted that the boss lady would sort this out). Well, boss lady said she'd have to see if there was any confirmation for it, and so dragged the girl in for questioning. Girl denied it, which only confirmed that the boyfriend must have been a real brute, to scare her into silence. Boss lady calls in the boyfriend, over in physical plant, who also denied it, and who got the girlfriend to repeat her denials. Girlfriend bursts into tears and leaves the room, confirming accounting's worst fears for her.

Meantime, physical plant's honcho realizes his guy's missing and wants an explanation. Hunts him down, finds him, and then berates the girlfriend's niece in front of the boss lady for letting stupid rumors interfere with the harmony and slow down the work.

Before it was all over, accounting was hot in the summer, cold in the winter, had peeling paint, lousy phone service, and broken locks, and physical plant had delayed payments on invoices, late or short payroll, and daily screaming matches until the whole thing was settled. The girlfriend told her aunt that nothing had happened, the boyfriend apologized for allowing his reputation to be so damaged as to make the story plausible, and the boss lady threatened to fire the next imbecile who dragged her into a domestic drama.

The Difference Between an Arab and A Jewish Terrorist, per Dr. Aaron Lerner:

Yaakov Teitel will have his day in Israeli court and, if convicted, spend a good part of the remainder of his life behind bars.

Prime Minister Netanyahu isn't asking for Jewish terrorist Yaakov Teitel to be freed.

There are no Israeli security forces planning to capture Palestinians to
trade for Yaakov Teitel's release.

The Israeli school system isn't teaching that Yaakov Teitel is a hero.

No summer camp sponsored by a leading Israeli political party is going to be named after Yaakov Teitel.

Yaakov Teitel's family isn't going to get a monthly stipend from the
Government of Israel as a sign of thanks for his actions.

yes, but there is way more to his playing than that...he's a very peculiar guy in that he refuses to play many notes in his lead riffs and that leaves them sparse and shallow sounding...he simply does not want to play solos even tho he does...he is a master of rhythm riffs and fillers and a super accomplished flat top player...within the band he is obsessed with the dynamic between himself his lead player...he invented the 'weaving guitar' thing, which is their signature sound...his sense of rhythm and timing is almost superhuman...that's why he is held in such high regard by other pickers...Clapton cannot do what Richards can...etc

Well, well...Lookie what we have here...
Fort Hood shooting: Texas army killer linked to September 11 terrorists

Hasan, the sole suspect in the massacre of 13 fellow US soldiers in Texas, attended the controversial Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Great Falls, Virginia, in 2001 at the same time as two of the September 11 terrorists, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt. His mother's funeral was held there in May that year.

The preacher at the time was Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born Yemeni scholar who was banned from addressing a meeting in London by video link in August because he is accused of supporting attacks on British troops and backing terrorist organisations.
...
As investigators look at Hasan's motives and mindset, his attendance at the mosque could be an important piece of the jigsaw. Al-Awlaki moved to Dar al-Hijrah as imam in January, 2001, from the west coast, and three months later the September 11 hijackers Nawaf al-Hamzi and Hani Hanjour began attending his services. A third hijacker attended his services in California.

Hasan was praying at Dar al-Hijrah at about the same time, and the FBI will now want to investigate whether he met the two terrorists.

his thing is that you need to get out the sound with as few notes as possible...of course fans are into shredding and gadgets and the like...even Mick Taylors/Ronnie Woods most notable lead riffs are somewhat resreved by other bands' standards...the Stones are much tighter than people think...they sound too loose sometimes but that's how they want it...it's the style of attack and the taste of their playing...they are a live gig at heart and if they had their way they would only play small clubs...they do these gigantic shows all across the world because they feel they owe it to their fans...I digress

This guy was a loner, didn't feel as if he "fit in" - the odd man out, and it's been my experience, people who feel this way as adults usually felt that way as kids, too. As an adult, he seems to have gotten in touch with his "Muslim-ness", and when he snapped, used that to justify to himself his actions.

"Sudden jihad syndrome"? Beginning to look like it. But his actions were not done as a part of any contact with any sort of organized group, do you think?

The accusations that Mayor Sheila Dixon used holiday gift cards for the needy during personal shopping sprees may sound like a minor embarrassment at worst, a small-time case of a politician enjoying the perks of power.

For Dixon, the stakes could not be higher.

Dixon, 55, will put her political future in the hands of a jury Monday, when her trial on theft charges begins. She's accused of asking wealthy developer pals to donate gift cards worth thousands of dollars, saying they would be given to poor families — then using them to buy electronics at Best Buy, clothes at Old Navy and knickknacks at Target. If convicted, she would be tossed out of office.

People make many sets of plans that run concurrently. Me, I'm taking extra training to enhance my skills at my primary job, which I don't like, while putting in extra hours at the job I hate to get in good with some of the leadership over there, so that my MBA in-progress will have some high-power backing when and if I go job-hunting, which I'm doing now in three states. speculation on motive is pointless, in some ways. What was going through his mind, even if knowable to us, would be useless to us, as we don't think like he does. It's easier to analyze the external affects and actions and try to develop and analyze a pattern of activities than it is to try to figure out "why" anyone does anything.

We got Stevie Wonder. Of course that was in 1968 and he was still a kid. We had Styx in 1970 thereabouts. Fun times.

Sadly not uncommon in local government. Power corrupts.

She was corrupt before she was elected mayor.

When she became City Council president in 1999, an ethics commission advised her to step down from her part-time state government job, saying it raised potential conflicts of interest. Dixon declined, keeping the second job for more than two years.

speculation on motive is pointless, in some ways. What was going through his mind, even if knowable to us, would be useless to us, as we don't think like he does. It's easier to analyze the external affects and actions and try to develop and analyze a pattern of activities than it is to try to figure out "why" anyone does anything.

From everything I've read about this guy - feeling persecuted, feeling like he "didn't fit in", his inability to connect with women - I suspect he may have snapped sooner or later anyhow. The company he kept gave him a way to justify his actions.

Exactly - they nudged him toward the edge, but he himself was tending that way on his own. Whether he would have jumped on his own or not, we can never know. Patterns are all we can look for, not causation.

I'm leaning toward the "snapped in the direction his religious ideas inclined him".

Not at all clear yet. Compare and contrast with the guy who also snapped in Florida and shot up his old workplace. At the moment, although little is known about either case, there seem to be close parallels emerging. Although religion isn't one of them at this point.

In a very unusual outcome, both happen to still be alive - and therefore available for questioning and examination to shed light on their underlying motivations. So in these two cases, we'll get a rare glimpse into the actual reasons behind their actions.

But not for a while.

Hubby and I were in the car when we heard the news about the Florida event. Hubby remarked that we're going to see more of this, people are out of work, in financial difficulties . . . then a report came out that the guy in Florida had been out of work for 2 years, didn't have enough money to even visit his son who lives 30 minutes away . . . and the place he shot up was his former employer.

I hope we don't see more of this . . . but I'm afraid we will.

An old blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake. He finds his way to a bar stool and orders some coffee.

After sitting for a while, he yells to the waiter..."Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?"

The bar immediately falls silent. In a very deep husky voice the woman next to him says "Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it's only fair that , given that you are blind, that you should know five things>"

1. The bartender is blonde girl with a baseball bat.

2. The bouncer is a blonde girl.

3. I am a 6 foot 175 lb blonde woman with a black belt in karate.

4. The woman sitting next to me is a blonde professional weight lifter.

5. The lady to my right is blonde and a professional wrestler.

Now think about it seriously, Mister. Do you still want to tell that joke?"

The blind cowboy thinks for a minute, shakes his head and mutters "Not if I"m going to have to explain it five times!"

Fort Hood shootings: gunman used 'cop killer' weapon in massacre at US Army base

Read the article- it doesn't mention who calls it a 'cop killer' weapon; in fact, about the only time it's mentioned is to point out that it's a popular sidearm for SWAT teams.

Of course, it's from a UK newspaper. I'll have to defer to their expertise on the matter, since they have very strict gun control laws to the point where their police go our on patrol unarmed...well...until now, because they've been having problems with street gangs somehow getting guns.

There was some controversy about the weapon as it was developed to fire a round that had, in its police and military loadings (but not in its civilian loadings) enhanced capabilities for the penetration of soft body armor. The cheif reason the weapon and round are so widely adopted is that the projectile exhibits superior wound characteristics (it tumbles like Nadia Comenici on crack), and offers significantly reduced recoil versus standard 9mm rounds. This, plus the smaller cartridge size and weight, means that a weapon for this calibre can carry many more rounds, offering enhanced effectiveness with reduced recoil. A sort of perfect sidearm.

A woman has been arrested for repeatedly harassing and threatening New York Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Sunshine, the Brooklyn judge presiding over her divorce proceeding. According to court records, Sunshine initiated the action against Cheryl Uzamere after she left 10 voice messages and sent three faxes to his chambers, containing such threats as "You're going to pay for what you've done" and that "the battle was to the death."

The judge appears to have filed the complaint shortly after Uzamere called the Inspector General's Office of New York County and said she "was going to put on a disguise and shoot [Justice Sunshine] in the head."

Uzamere turned herself in on Tuesday and was sent for psychiatric observation. Many of her complaints against the judge, which stem from her ongoing divorce and child-support dispute with Nigerian Sen. Ehigie Edobor Uzamere, are detailed on her Web site, under the headline "Anti-Schvartze, Talmud-Oriented Bigot Judge Sunshine Continues Reign of Terror Against Schvartze Family."

There was apparently a group of Indigo assholes at my door on Halloween. Our neighborhood never gets much traffic, my own kids are grown, we had no decorations and not even a porch light on, but some idiot parent drove to the end of the driveway and dumped five or six twerps out. I learned of this when one of them grabbed our door knocker and gave it the worst pounding it had ever received, and then - after no more than a single second's delay - started kicking my front door as hard as he could, over and over again.

My son answered the door, bowl of candy in hand, and was greeted by a cry of "Grab all of it!" - which all of them proceeded to do.

At this point, I started bellowing, and I'm pretty sure the term "Little fuckers!" carried out to the car where dad was sitting and ignoring this behavior, because he suddenly decided to make a live appearance. I think he was inclined to lay into me, but thought better of it, gather his snot-nosed shitheads back into the car...and drove them another 50 feet to the next house.

I told my son that I would answer the door next time, and that I would either dole out large dollops of flour and water into each of their bags, or jerk one of them inside and slam the door - eventually releasing the victim through the side door with a pants load.

Essentially. The parents tend to be affluent, New Agey, and wildly overprotective. I don't know about spoon-bending. It's sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy, in that the signs of an indigo are also the signs of a child raised by an affluent, overprotective New Ager.

re: #206 Fenway_Nation

Really? I knew the round was smaller, but didn't think it exhibited those charachteristics. I thought the advantage would've been in capacity.

Capacity of the magazine is part of it. The 5.7 round is a bottle-necked cartridge, as i recall, so it can pack a good deal of propellant behind a comparatively small projectile. Chief advantage of it is higher velocity and terminal ballistic instability in a smaller package, but it packs enough wallop to get it done. (461 J for 5.7 hardball versus 419 J for 9 mm hardball; 716 m/sec versus 390m/sec for 9 mm).

If it's not on camera, it didn't happen. Recall his late-night run to Dover:

[Link: www.timesonline.co.uk...]
Seventeen of the bodies were driven away in private, before members of the media were invited by the family of one soldier to witness the return of his body.

Mr Obama stood silent and motionless in salute as six soldiers slowly carried a casket bearing the body of Sergeant Dale Griffin, from Indiana, out of the aircraft.
...
In the surprise move shortly after midnight last night a few members of the press and some Administration officials accompanied the President to America’s largest military mortuary which serves as the entry point for most service members killed abroad.

Mr Obama landed in Marine One, the presidential helicopter, before privately meeting the families of many of the casualties in a chapel near the airfield.

I wouldn't go that far...but cripes- his address to the nation immediately afterwards did not inspire confidence. And that was one of the endeavors where I was hoping he could succeed.

I'm fussy...there is absolutely nothing less than the best, full out for our fighters...his team took a major hit and he screws it up imo

His advisors and handlers are not up to the task at all. They've got a tin ear at times, or else they lack hold over him, or, as I've thought from time to time, some of them are sabotaging him outright.

Obama's appeal was he is a great speaker, a great motivator and inspirer. Well, he continues to give good speeches (I guess), and he certainly continues to inspire some people. But this is now the real deal. If he continues to behave like he is campaigning for the job he will be doomed.

W was clumsy, awkward, and very much the regular guy. Of course he was, at times, out of his depth. Who wouldn't be, given the job and what happened to him while in office.

Still, the thing was that W didn't project this aura of competence and capability - his cabinet and appointments did that for him. You didn't expect, as one does with Obama, great things from the man.

Sex Can Trigger Short-Term Amnesia

For decades, doctors described cases of a rare neurological condition that usually occurred in patients older than 50. Neurologists noted that patients knew their identities, but couldn't retain recent memory, where they were and how they got there. They showed no other symptoms.

Sex is one of the major triggers for the baffling medical condition called transient global amnesia in which patients lose their ability to retain immediate memory.

TGA usually occurs after the person engages in strenuous activity -- such as having sex, vigorously exercising, suddenly immersing into icy or hot water, straining to dig a stuck car or even bumping the head.

Great.

The upshot is that if from time to time you express a mild distaste for slave-labour camps or one-candidate elections, you are either insane or actuated by the worst motives. In the same way, when Henry Wallace is asked by a newspaper interviewer why he issues falsified versions of his speeches to the press, he replies: "So you are one of these people who are clamouring for war with Russia."
