Westboro Baptist Cult Pickets Obama Girls’ School

US News • Views: 4,083

The Westboro Baptist Church cult is notorious for their ultra-fundamentalist anti-gay stunts, but this one crosses another line for them — as they picket a school attended by the Obama children.

Westboro Baptist Church, the fringe-of-the-fringe anti-gay group famous for protesting at military funerals and claiming that God is punishing the country for its tolerance of homosexuality, was spotted this morning protesting outside Sidwell Friends, the school attended by Sasha and Malia Obama.

One of the cultists posted a photo on Twitter.

Hi Sharm! The sign actually reads:

which is appropriate, as the moron in the picture is standing in front of a mirror.

I think it's a very bad message to send to children that God considers them to be enemies when it was Jesus who praised the faith of children and would not have them kept from Him. WTH is wrong with these people?

18 albusteve  Mon, Nov 9, 2009 1:01:29pm

I can't help but think, once again, that sooner or later the 1st is gonna take a hit...maybe for something like this display of harmful idiocy...maybe we need a 500ft rule here

19 simoom  Mon, Nov 9, 2009 1:01:50pm

Acording to a link in the TPM article, it seems Randal Terry and Operation Rescue also decided the children's school was an appropriate place to hold one of their protests. Back in September:

[Link: www.reuters.com...]

WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Randall Terry, Director, Operation Rescue Insurrecta Nex:

On Thursday, 9/17 and Friday 9/18, various pro-life groups will stage protests at high schools from Noon to 1:00 P.M., showing pictures of aborted and healthy babies - the same pictures Jim Pouillon was showing when he was gunned down.

One protest will occur at Sidwell Friends School in Washington DC, where many
high powered politicos send their children.

Lucretius (99 BC - 55 BC) called religion "the oldest enemy of mankind." The verbiage on the sign in the photo reminds one of this dictum, but I doubt it's the meaning the protester had in mind.

they prefer small town funerals because the smaller the town, the least likely they will run into the Harley Riders who have effectively cut them off from all grieving family and friends. But even in the small towns, they cant get a break. the Local support comes from a hundred mile plus radius.

Some members of this cult have a "business plan" that involves being as antagonistic/offensive as possible - ideally to the point of physical interaction at which point they file assault charges and pursue a civil claim against the "attacker". It's a fundraising mechanism for them.

Ignoring or mocking mercilessly them is the best thing to do - just don't make it physical or else you might end up funding their future efforts!

I'm reminded of a campaign PETA had going a few years ago, trying to get fishing outlawed. They would send a guy dressed in a fish suit to stand outside a school - just off school property - and harangue students about the evils and cruelty of fishing as they were dismissed.

They tried that here in Detroit one day. The students were, of course, curious. At first. When they figured out that Mr. Fishy was basically an asshole, they started yelling insults at him. Then the shoving started. With Mr. Fishy on the ground, the kicking got going, as Mr. Fishy's normally dressed friends came to his rescue and got the hell out of Dodge.

PETA tried pressing charges, but everyone involved was way too young to prosecute as anything other than a juvenile, and because they were off school property the school district couldn't be held liable (PETA's search for deep pockets to shake down becoming rather obvious at this point.)

As far as I know, PETA has never tried such a moronic stunt again in Detroit.

Not that I'm encouraging the 0bama children or anyone else to emulate such behavior, of course. Just pointing out certain similarities.

A good portion of their 'protest tour' in San Diego was spent out in front of Jewish community centers.

That has nothing to do with PETA, that's just how Detroit is.

168 Shiplord Kirel  Mon, Nov 9, 2009 2:04:15pm

The Phelper cult has nothing to do with politics or religion, except for using them as a vehicle and shield for their outrageous conduct. At the same time, they are not at all an isolated phenomenon, they are merely an extreme and novel manifestation of a tendency that is common throughout society: That of equating abuse, provocation, and general unpleasantness with power and (in many cases) of deriving psycho-sexual gratification from it. These people are everywhere. A distinguished researcher, Robert Sutton, has even written a book about them: The No Asshole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't
Of course, Sutton wrote this in the context of business but his principles and analysis are widely applicable elsewhere. One crucial insight is that assholes are not more successful or effective than decent people, they merely appear to be in some cases because their habits tend to thwart competition and accountability.

For many years, Southwest Airlines was consistently rated as the best company in America to work for and they are still in the top ten. It also happens that Southwest was an early proponent of the "no asshole rule" though obviously they didn't put it in those terms.
It was their policy that rude, abusive, nasty, and personally dishonest types just were not hired or retained, regardless of their qualifications and alleged achievements. In particular, applicants were carefully monitored when they arrived for interviews. If they were rude or surly to anyone on the property, security guards, janitors, or the receptionist, they were automatically rejected and told so in plain terms.

OT - I'll be slipping out of here in a few minutes. This afternoon starts what is know in the theatre business as "hell week." Mixing in the tech and dress rehearsals... until opening Friday. And then it's happy holidays until Dec. 20th.

Does anyone think that Nov. 13th is a little early to start a Christmas show? I just don't need that much holiday cheer.

You're late. The local Borders decked their halls with holiday regalia the day after Halloween this year.

re: #168 Shiplord Kirel

Interesting. I work in an environment populated with people holding advanced degrees in science, engineering and mathematics. And I've always maintained that you can tell everything you need to know about someone by how they treat the people who clean the toilets and empty the trash. We've had only a very few who were condescending toward those folks, and none of them lasted long.

We've had only a very few who were condescending toward those folks, and none of them lasted long.

Getting rid of assholes will work wonders in any organizational environment. It is a top down process unfortunately and requires a level of perception that many leaders lack, especially since a lot of them reached their positions by being assholes in the first place.
The idea of the hard-driving, mean, egotistical type as someone who can "get results" is deeply ingrained in western culture. Knowing better, and applying that knowledge, can confer a genuine competitive advantage though.

Word. Bad staff (at any level, but especially management) tend to drive out the good, especially when the people who are good at their jobs are in demand. Louis Theroux did an amazing hour long piece on the WBC several years ago:
The Most Hated Family in America

For those who don't know Louis's work, you really should. He's an amazing presenter who hunted down some of the craziest extremists, from Nazis to WBC and Black Supremacists. At one point when he was at a house with Nazis all around him, they asked him if he was Jewish. They thought that he was and he refused to answer (he isn't). He stood his ground against them on a moral point and they backed down after a few minutes.

I don't know too many who would have done that.

You can find lots of his episodes online and I really suggest you watch them.

216 Summer Seale  Mon, Nov 9, 2009 3:36:31pm

Oh and for the more entertainment-inclined, he's also done shows about people who run in demolition derbies, faith healers, and other such "non-mainstream" things. He doesn't just stick to dangerous extremists. =)

Of course they are. They picket at the funerals of the soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why would the soldiers killed at Ft. Hood be any different in their eyes?

In the WBC's warped theology, they alone are God's chosen elite and everyone who isn't in their little cult will be sent to Hell while they stand at God's side in judgment of the rest of humanity. They're insane, so expect them to do crazy things like protesting outside Sasha and Malia Obama's schools, or at the funerals of soldiers. =/

re: #209 funky chicken

Who funds these freaks?

I'm so glad you asked.

Phelps was a prominent civil rights lawyer for many years, arguing and often winning cases where black plaintiffs complained of illegal discrimination. "God hates fags," he says. "He doesn't hate blacks." In 1987, Phelps received an award from the local branch of the NAACP, recognizing his "undauntedness" and "steely determination for justice". More recently, however, "black" has become part of Phelps' glossary of insults, with press releases attacking various leaders as "black whores", "black faggots", and so on.

He was suspended from the practice of law for two years beginning in 1969, on three counts of professional misconduct. He was disbarred in 1979 for showing "little regard for the ethics of his profession", after several of his court filings seemed to be increasingly at odds with the facts of the assorted matters. The family's law firm continues to operate. Of Phelps' children, all adults, at least 11 are lawyers, and several work for the family firm.

Their whole schtick is to go out of their way to be so incredibly over-the-top offensive that somebody on the street will confront them, then they will goad that poor sucker into some kind of physical contact, a shove, brush by, whatever. Then the Phelps family law firm will threaten to sue that poor bastard into oblivion until he settles with them. The term tar-baby seems ironically apropos here, especially considering Phelps' history as a kind of corrupted and now toxic ex-civil rights attorney.

Hope this helps.

222 mikhailtheplumber  Mon, Nov 9, 2009 6:22:21pm

I find the idea that these hateful idiots are allowed to adopt children chilling. Something is very wrong when you add in the fact that in many places in this country loving gay couples aren't allowed to adopt.

224 BLBfootballs  Mon, Nov 9, 2009 7:00:09pm

I hope the FBI's keeping a close watch on them. IMO those are the kinds of nuts who're probably crazy enough to do something.

Reminds me of the true American oath: to defend the Constitution "against all enemies, foreign and domestic." Westboro Baptist qualifies with spades.

Is that not the theology of everyone who has a theology? All that differs in this case is the degree of intolerance they are permitted to show on earth, and the range of people to whom they show it.

226 Lidane  Mon, Nov 9, 2009 9:37:53pm

re: #225 hicsuget

Is that not the theology of everyone who has a theology?

No, and I say that as someone who's an agnostic at best.

Other faiths at least offer their own versions of conversion, compassion, and/or redemption for non-believers, even the fundamentalist, "Repent or Die!" types. For the WBC, there is no redemption for anyone who isn't in their little cult. You're either fully on board with them now or you're destined for Hell, no matter what kind of life you lead. Period. That's a far cry from every other established religion that comes to mind.

All that differs in this case is the degree of intolerance they are permitted to show on earth, and the range of people to whom they show it.

No, not really. Their theology really is warped because it IS intolerance. That sign about God being the enemy is how they see things. For them, God is just as hateful and vengeful as they are without any compassion or mercy at all. It's why they picket funerals-- the soldiers are defending a country the WBC sees as hellbound, so their deaths should be celebrated rather than mourned. That's how sick these people are.

Also, they show that intolerance equally to everyone who disagrees with them. It's not just gays, or liberals, or whoever. It's everyone who's not in their cult. You could be the most devout, sincere, churchgoing person who tries to do right by your family and your faith and they'd *still* send you to Hell just for thinking they go too far or that they're out of line for picketing funerals.
