Gulls are bullies of the sand... bullies of the sea... bullies of the air... don't stand under one.

That woman has no belly fat!

However, I know someone who does...

Just don't hold it in Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. There, the gulls have run off the pigeons that used to flock around the Landmark Cafe. And it has made the area worse. The gulls are much louder and they are quite aggressive. They will come right up to you and snatch at things in your hands.

Go to Ft. DeSoto beach here in Pinellas, generations of gulls brought up scrounging. They swope in and snatch things off tables, grab things away from children, and stand there screeching at you if you don't give them anything. You can never leave uncovered food alone for an instant, it is always on the top 10 beaches in the country lists, but they never mention the gulls.

I'd never try to do that. It would be cruel to the bird. Both my father and I would shotgun them to thin their numbers were it legal, but we'd never do anything to torture a bird like that.

In Chicago, part of the reason for the increase in gulls has been the introduction of Peregrine Falcons to the city. The falcons have cut into pigeon numbers and the gulls took advantage. The gulls are likely to be attacked because they are bigger and better able to fight, thus causing the raptors to seek easier prey.

Moral of the Story: Strength matters. If you are able to fight, you are less likely to be attacked. Chicago's mayor should reflect on this truth.

27 Sharmuta  Wed, Nov 11, 2009 11:05:15pm

re: #26 woodsman

Hmm. I'm not sure if Charles has evolved so much, but LGF has changed because the political climate has changed. I will state I'm making some assumptions here, but Charles didn't evolve into disliking european crypto-fascists, it's that the political scene changed. It's not that Charles evolved into disliking anti-science theocrats, it's that the political scene changed. It's not that Charles evolved into being anti-Bircher, it's that the political scence changed. What we've seen at LGF is a distinction being made between principles and blind ideology. I assume our host has always held these positions, it's that others have shown they don't share them with him.

Very good question. I'm actually going to punt on this one. My own feelings aren't organized enough to put into words. For now, though, I can safely say that said evolution has always been guided by Charles following the truth wherever it leads.

I agree with Sharmuta's #27.

I've been registered since the summer of 2007. I would add to Sharmuta's #27 that one thing I've noticed more recently, is that there is less likelihood of threads devolving into slugfests and name-calling. It still happens; but it seems to me to happen less frequently than it used to, and when it happens, it ends quicker than it used to, from Charles' being more involved than he used to be or from other posters being more willing to ask folks to just please stop it. A good change, imo.

re: #26 woodsman

Just a few of us here, and all of you have posted a gazillion more posts than I have -- what do you all think about the evolution of LGF (and Charles) over the past few years?

Now, that is a question.

I've been posting here since October 23rd 2001 (registration didn't begin until '04). Initially, Charles applied a very broad and tolerant moderation policy. It was a real free-for-all in the old days. Inevitably some extreme elements insinuated themselves into this and became regular and even influential posters. Even with moderation, extremism flourished though Charles started to crack down on the really obnoxious posters.

I myself have always been a capital C Conservative, a Goldwater Republican since 1964. I think some of us just did not realize how steeped in religious activist ideology some of our long time posters really were, or how extreme some of them were in their views of so-called social issues. We had a common cause, a strong one, in opposing jihad, supporting the armed forces, and exposing the machinations of the institutional media.

I am a scientist by profession and an active member of a number of rational skeptic groups. This put me at odds with some of the religious conservatives and extreme partisans here from the very beginning, especially over issues like evolution, but we got along fairly well until a couple of years ago. Other concerns were just much more important here. For a number of years, in fact, I did not fully realize that Charles had very similar views in many areas. This conflict among the lizardoids burst into the open, imho, largely because of the destructive role played by religious conservatives in last year's political campaign and because of the increasingly prominent alliance between many other "right-wing" bloggers and the Euro-fascist elements. Changes in the media, especially the rise of right-wing talkers (IE demagogues) to real power, and their increasing extremism and recklessness, were other factors. Charles was uncompromising in his opposition to this. It was a matter of principle and some of us felt that we had to take his side. We were not really prepared for the vociferousness of the opposition, and especially for the rise of what has called "Obama Derangement Syndrome."

To me, as a long-time participant, it does not seem that the site has changed so much as the political right has changed. This has not been for the better. Today, Goldwater himself would be vilified as a RINO and a liberal, though his views had not in fact changed very much late in his life. Our experience mirrors this shift of perception. Frankly, I could not ask to be in better company.

45 woodsman  Wed, Nov 11, 2009 11:36:54pm

re: #42 Sharmuta

For example, Charles' take on Anita Dunn stepping down seemed unusual.

White House Communications Director Anita Dunn, who’s been leading the Obama administration’s charge against Fox News (and was promptly smeared as a commie sympathizer by Glenn Beck), will be stepping down at the end of the month.

This move has nothing to do with the Fox News issues, however — she was planning to leave from the beginning.

I know he's not a fan of Beck's but it was Dunn who put her foot in her mouth on her own with the "two of my favorite political philosophers" comment. Why even give Beck mention in the post?

Second that...comparing this to McVeigh is like comparing apples and puppies. We blamed McVeigh's anti-government bias for his attack, as that is what came out about his past comments and his motive after the attack. It was not religious, it was political. This idiot has a long history of making anti-American, anti-Military comments, that HE tied to his religion (ie, "Muslims shouldn't fight with the American military."). As for the fact that no one brought up McVeigh's religion...someone remind me, did he scream "Praise Jesus" as the bombs went off? Can't remember...

It's been more of a situation where Charles and LGF haven't moved, everything else has. The left has been doing a pretty good job at marginalizing it's kooks since letting them run wild was a guaranteed election loser. SInce then, the rights kooks started popping out of the woodwork and the GoP is a ship without a captain right now. Charles and LGF have always been anti-idiotarian. A perceived shift by LGF is in reality a shift in the balance of kooks.

According to his wikipedia biography, McVeigh was agnostic at the time of the OKC bombing but reverted to his Catholic upbringing while in prison. He received last rites before he got the needle.

Ah, so even better...so by that logic, according to this editorial, we should have blamed McVeigh's LACK of religion if we're going to dare refer to Hasan's Muslim faith. As if he is not the one who continually, inappropriately, threateningly brought it up, and was even trying to use it as an excuse to be discharged from the service. This guy practically introduces himself as "Nidal HasanI'maMuslimandIwantoutoftheArmy," but we're not allowed to even comment that it might have played a part in his actions. Now I'm reading that Army doctors didn't want to deploy him because they were "afraid he'd pass secrets to Islamic jihadists." Beautiful!

And to think, this kumbayist asshat is the son of the Mayor Daley who administered the worst mass beating ever suffered by American lefties. As I have mentioned here several times, I was an eyewitness to the '68 convention riots. My mom was a delegate and my dad and I tagged along even though I was a Republican by then and had volunteered for Goldwater in '64. Whatever they thought, they need to be run out of the service on a rail.

There has been a serious lack of accountability in the military in recent years. During WW2, something like 200 generals were sacked for incompetence or malfeasance or both. In the current war, only one (Janis Karpinski, the mistress of Abu Ghraib) has publicly gotten the boot.
If you're a private or a second lieutenant, you may not have realized what the job entailed. If you're a colonel or a general, you damn well do and you need to get it right.

re: #40 woodsman

Charles really hasn't been "maximizing LGF for monetary gain", he's just trying to pay the bills. This has become, more or less, a 24/7/365 job for him and it's not cheap to run a high-traffic site like LGF. He's tried to keep the ads as discreet and as low-key as possible, even going as far as asking us for input on it on multiple occasions lately.

Charles has said that, if he were to break down what he's gotten paid in ad revenue into an hourly rate for his services, he'd be working very cheaply. Bottom line, if people want to see less (or no) ads on LGF, they need to pony up to the tip jar on regular basis or do PayPal subscriptions to chip in.

As for me, the ads don't bother me a damn bit, because I know Charles is just trying to keep LGF going and not go broke in the process...

Beyond that, some of the ads are pretty funny in their blindly generated juxtaposition, as when they hawk creationist propaganda right next to a thread denouncing creationist propaganda.

Amen. I think this part of the story sums it up pretty well:

Officials considered kicking Hasan out of the program but chose not to partly because firing a doctor is a "cumbersome and lengthy" process that involves hearings and potential legal conflict, sources told NPR.

Officials also believed they lacked solid evidence that Hasan was unstable and were concerned they could be accused of discriminating against him because of his Islamic identity or views.

The concerns about Hasan's performance and religious views were shared with other military officials considering his assignment after he finished his medical training, and the consensus was to send the 39-year-old psychiatrist to Fort Hood, an official told the Associated Press

So to summarize:

1. We can't fire the psychotic traitor because it'll take too much time and hassle.
2. We can't fire the psychotic traitor because he might be offended and we'll be branded bigots and Islamophobes.
3. Let's transfer the psychotic traitor to another US military base where he'll be some other bureaucrat's problem, and clock out before the traffic gets too bad.

To the extent you refer to mental, emotional, moral or ethical fitness, I concur. As to physical impairments, not so much. Away from combat, there are many jobs, some potentially quite dangerous, where ability and experience weigh heavily, and the perfection of one's eyesight, hearing, or physical condition is irrelevant. Dedicated and highly qualified uniformed men and women serve America every day using hearing aids, glass eyes, prosthetics, and wheelchairs, often acquired as a consequence of answering the call of their country.

96 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Thu, Nov 12, 2009 1:44:22am

Maybe if it had been listed in the Psych journals at Walter Reed so they could recognize it?

PJSD-Pre Jihad Stress Disorder.
An affliction only known to affect a minute fraction of the population, most frequently after attending Islamic Mosques and/or Madrassas of the Wahhabi sect.

Manifestations of this affliction include but are not limited to:
1. Denouncing western culture as immoral.
2. Admiration for those that cause the deaths of innocent civilians through random bombings.
3. Frequent religious themed correspondence with others who also seemingly share the affliction.
4. Feelings of persecution and a deeply held conviction that "others" are trying to destroy Islam.
5. Inappropriate behavior at work such as giving lectures on the Quran and how "infidels" should be killed.
6. Inability to behave civilly and with courtesy towards those not suffering from the affliction, particularly if female.
7. Indifference to studies and poor grades, also lax and lazy job performance due to inattention.
8. The acquisition of firearms and/or explosives for future use against "infidels."

If left untreated patients with this condition pose a severe risk both to themselves and others. Every effort should be made to immediately separate the patient from access to any type of weapon. The patient will best benefit from treatment when confined in a secure facility and contact with others sharing the affliction is curtailed.

Recommended course of treatment involves religious re-programming to be carried out by adherents of Islam not of the Wahhabi sect. Treatment may take from months to years to accomplish successfully and relapse is still possible even then. The patient should never be allowed access to weapons suitable for mass killings even after treatment is terminated.

*WARNING* By no means should the patient ever be allowed enrollment in any military organizations under any circumstances or any capacity whatsoever. Exposure to the military culture has been known to severely aggravate this condition most especially if the organization has any current or potential involvement in the Middle East or Asia.

Seems like half the stuff I download anymore is requests from family, mom had me hunt up a UK detective series called "Rosemary and Thyme" for her. I'd never seen them before and it turns out to be pretty good, half sleuth and half gardening, weird combination but it works.

Well with four episodes to a disc it is only six discs, no big expense there, but converting format and encoding each disc takes a bit more than an hour, and that is after spending a day or three with bittorrent always running in the background dowloading it. You get sick of your internet pages taking forever to load and not being able to watch hulu because the torrent is sucking up all your bandwidth.

119 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Thu, Nov 12, 2009 2:51:31am

Most of the movies have been converted to AVI format so the file is only around 700MB although sometimes it can be 1400MB depending what bitrate and sound options they encoded. If you have a highspeed internet connection it should take anything from 40 minutes to 8 hours depending on the seeders you connect to.

More to the point: how's it gonna run with no doctors? According to the article, Cuba is dealing with it's energy crisis with free "gifts" of up to two-thirds of it's oil imports from Venezuela, which it "pays for" by sending it's own medical equipment and personnel to Venezuela in return.

So, I guess that solves your problem - without any doctors, the health care system goes away! Isn't communism wonderful?

Chavez has the Oil, Castro has the doctors. That sounds like a fair trade to me. Where does Saudi Arabia three-quarters of its doctors from?

[Link: www.arabianbusiness.com...]

The result, however, has been a net loss of medical staff from Cuba. Once off the island, they have a bad habit of wandering over the Venezuelan border, never to return.

Which at least keeps demand up, I guess.

According to Wiki (I know, it's Wikipedia) they come from South Asia.

Health manpower
The majority are South Asian origin and are grossly underpaid. The steady growth in health services in recent years raises the demand for labor in the health sector, which can not be easily met by Saudi nationals due to relatively small number of Saudi graduates from the medical educational and training institutions. Therefore, greater absorptive capacity is needed in the colleges of medicine, pharmacy, applied sciences and nursing, along with the opening of new colleges for these specializations.

I realized that there are advantages to metric when a friend and I were assembling a Sears Craftsman table saw and we found ourselves tightening a 5/8" nut against a 9/32" or a 17/64"...

It seemed to me that it all would have been a lot easier if it were just in mm or at most .5mm indrements.

You don't have the option of metric when the machine you're working on is 60+ years old. It pays to have a set of Imperial sockets along with metric (US auto manufacturers switched their machining over to metric sometime in the late 70's, I think).

One inch: the length of three barleycorns, taken from the middle of the ear, laid end to end.

One yard: the distance from the King's nose to the tip of his fingers.

Those of you who aren’t plumbers probably won’t get this and won’t think it’s funny, but I think those of you who are plumbers will really enjoy this…

“This lawn supervisor was out on a sprinkler maintenance job and he started working on a Findlay sprinkler head with a Langstrom 7″ gangly wrench. Just then, this little apprentice leaned over and said, “You can’t work on a Findlay sprinkler head with a Langstrom 7″ wrench.” Well this infuriated the supervisor, so he went and got Volume 14 of the Kinsley manual, and he reads to him and says, “The Langstrom 7″ wrench can be used with the Findlay sprocket.” Just then, the little apprentice leaned over and said, “It says sprocket not socket!”

As I get older, I'm slowly getting into opera, particularly Wagner. I have a few recordings of Bernd Weikl, a fine baritone. He's very good as Beckmesser in Die Meistersinger.

Screw opera. The baritone never gets laid in opera. Always the flippin' tenor.

I'd get to play the father, grandfather, lawyer, judge, teacher,

Yeah, I said I never did much with it... that's why.

Menotti's "The Telephone" was the only thing I ever sung where I got the chick. So, I said, "Screw it.".

I'm a first soprano... I have 15 years of formal training under my belt, and I sang with our local opera company many years ago. I've done a lot of singing for pay over the years, commercial jingos and the like - made a fair bit of money at it.

I stopped the formal performance some years ago, but I pull out an old Irish tune just about every week at the pub.

Remember that speech Obama gave that was supposed to bring Arab together with the west and bring peace?

Hezbollah dismisses Obama pledges

The leader of Lebanon's mainly Shia movement Hezbollah says US President Barack Obama's promise to engage with Muslims has proved to be false.

Hassan Nasrallah said the US had shown its commitment to Israel by sending more military aid and backtracking on demands to stop West Bank settlements.

He said the Arab world could not depend on the US to solve its problems because the US was causing them.

In June, Mr Obama called for a "new beginning" between the US and Muslims.

Correspondents say that Mr Nasrallah's remarks were his strongest criticism yet of the US president.

Woops!

Closed Shop

Non-union construction workers could be locked out of new federal projects thanks to an executive order President Obama signed back in February on the sly as part of a payback to organized labor.

The election of Republican governors in Virginia, and especially New Jersey, who are both opposed to union-only favoritism in contracting, could complicate the administration’s efforts, at least on the state level. The loss of New Jersey must be viewed as a particularly acute setback, given how active labor bosses and White House operatives were in their failed effort to secure re-election for a long-time ally.

Industry leaders have responded vociferously to Obama’s order in detailed press releases that fault the administration for advancing discriminatory procurement practices in violation of competitive bidding laws. The directive received scarce media attention for months, even after the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a memorandum to federal agencies in July encouraging them to implement the new rule.

In his order, Obama calls for project labor agreements (PLAs) to be used, when the cost to the federal government exceeds $25 million. PLA’s are set up as multi-employer, multi-union, pre-existing agreements designed to harmonize labor relations between construction trade unions and contractors.

Did a little informal research this morning. I went back a year or so and looked at ten articles (all different sources) on the routine president approval/disapproval ratings. For President Bush, every article led with a sentence similar to; "President Bush's disapproval ratings slipped to an all time low of 30%."

However did the same this morning on President Obama and every source started the article with; "President Obama's approval ratings are around 30%." This even though Obama's disapproval ratings are now exactly the same as Bush's. Notice the subtlety here...always mention Bush's disapproval rating yet always mention Obama's approval ratings.

I've had to work 3x as much this year just to have a normal sales year. It has gotten to the point where I could just shut everything down and do nothing but gates/ladders/handrails with just one other man and put 2x the amount of money in my pocket. The only problem is I'd be putting almost 10 people out of work plus I hate the idea of shutting down a portion of my company that I've worked so hard to build. 10 years ago we did nothing but repair work and last year we had almost 1.5 million in sales. I just don't know if I can go through another year like this year just to keep my head above water.

Attorney: Parents in balloon hoax will plead guilty

DENVER — The attorney for the Colorado father who reported his son floated away in a helium balloon says his client and the boy’s mother will both plead guilty to charges in the case.

Lawyer David Lane said in a statement Thursday that Mayumi Heene will plead guilty to false reporting to authorities, a misdemeanor. He said her husband, Richard Heene, will plead guilty to attempting to influence a public servant, a felony.

Lane says prosecutors have agreed to allow both to serve probation sentences.

Florida man asked Killeen shop to deliver flowers to Hasan

Veterans Day visitors to Marvel's Florist on North 10th Street were welcomed by a bouquet of yellow roses on a table near the entrance. The bouquet was "very similar" to the one commissioned by a Florida man for owner and retired Army Sgt. Phil Enderle to send to each hospital around Fort Hood in hopes that it would end up getting to Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who is suspected of killing 13 and injuring 38 during a shooting on post Nov. 5.

The man wanted Enderle to attach a note that read, "Major Nidal Hasan. Koran 2: 190-3. In God's eye, and those who submit, you are a hero!" Another request: that Enderle "play dumb" if authorities began asking about the order. Shortly after reading the customer's wishes, Enderle hand-delivered the e-mail correspondence to the FBI.

"I did what I thought was right," Enderle said. "It really, really troubled me. He said in an e-mail, 'my money's green like anyone else's.'"

Enderle said the FBI showed up at the man's doorstep over the weekend. The FBI took no action, but the event prompted another round of e-mails from the customer, who argued that Enderle had stifled his constitutional rights.

"If he would've not had the message from the Quran or the message about playing stupid, I would have just contacted him through e-mail," Enderle said. "But that's just if's; that didn't happen."

I was reviewing the early part of the thread and had to second Fenway's statement.

I guess Daley thinks that even the Military shouldn't have access to firearms.

Got this in my inbox this am.

“Perhaps the real culprit here,” he continued, “is former President Bill Clinton. The Washington Times revealed this morning that after he took office in 1993, the Army, under Clinton, instituted a ban on the carrying of firearms by military personnel on their bases. As a result, soldiers have been disarmed and left vulnerable to this kind of attack. Using Daley’s logic, he should blame Clinton for the Fort Hood massacre. That makes more sense than blaming guns.

Anyone know about the Clinton ban?

This summer, the president stated that he's "not comfortable" using the term "victory" in Afghanistan. How can he possibly ask troops to risk life and limb in that country after saying that? His subsequent three-month indecision with regard to the Army's request for 40,000 more troops further betrays the fact that we're simply not committed to victory. One can scarcely comprehend FDR openly debating, in full view of Hitler and the world, a request for reinforcements during the Battle of the Bulge.

Mayor Bloomberg's office: Inviting imam linked to 1993 WTC bombing to City Hall was mistake

The mayor's office admits it goofed when it invited a Brooklyn imam linked to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing to City Hall for a Muslim community meeting on Wednesday.

Siraj Wahhaj was one of nine Islamic leaders who met with Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly over fears of a backlash against local Muslims after the Fort Hood massacre.

The imam's past wound up overshadowing the get-together and the mayor's red-faced staff later said Wahhaj should never have been there in the first place.

In 1995, Wahhaj was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the World Trade Center bombing - meaning he was never charged but the feds believe he had some connection.

Later that year, Wahhaj appeared as a defense witness in the trial of blind sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, who was convicted of trying to blow up the Lincoln Tunnel and the United Nations.

"If we were aware of his full background," an aide said, "it would have been done differently."

Pretty much. Their whole M.O. is to have the government fix everything which is essentially what the so called stimulus bill was allegedly about. However, it was already noted as fact that the stimulus bill funding was only related to 17% job creation. And those weren't private sector jobs but public funded infrastructure projects or regular old government boondoggles. If not being an omnibus spending bill all around.

I can imagine what this jobs summit will bring about. Perhaps another "Young Adult Conservation Corps" proposal so people can plant pine saplings for eight dollars per hour for six weeks. Or maybe another re-hash of the "weather sealing" corps he was always talking about. I see a pattern here: the corps, the corps, the corps. Only this is the Jimmy Carter variety.

Imagine if the most important sentence you ever wrote was a Facebook status update that goes something like this: "ON THE PHONE WITH THIS FAT CHICK...WHERER MY IHOP." Now you know how it feels to be 19-year-old Rodney Bradford, who used that all-caps message to keep himself out of prison.

re: #306 albusteve

the exact situation...a remodel business up north...it grew and grew but nobody was making any real money (me, and my partner)...we had a show room, a couple of sales people, a complete, high tech office, 16 guys in the field and a mind boggling cash flow that nearly gave me a heart attack...our sales hit a million, then nearly two and we were famous!...prices profits crept up in a market of very well to do customers...we sweated it out and finally made some real money and it took almost exactly ten years in a fairly strong economy...we knew we were doing okay when we could keep the whole team together year round...I was the field boss and that meant a lot to me...it took more patience than I felt like I had...doing 200k remodel jobs and not making alot of money seemed absurd, but we kept at it

Good morning, Lizards!

"but we kept at it."

I really like that. 2109. A hundred years from now, those inclined to work for themselves may be saying the same. Plus, it's always good to remember:
Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise.

Oddly, the Times cleans up Bradford's status update — which it describes as being "written in indecipherable street slang" that was "gobbledygook to anyone besides Mr. Bradford" — to read "Where's my pancakes." A visit to Bradford's Facebook page reveals it actually says "ON THE PHONE WITH THIS FAT CHICK...WHERER MY IHOP."

Oh, come on, it wasn't that hard to figure out. The only odd thing about it is that he was simultaneously talking on the phone and updating his facebook status at the same time. Must have been a lull in the conversation.

332 ggt  Thu, Nov 12, 2009 7:22:55am

I found this to be sooo appropriate!

Bulshyt

Like here in 2008 reality, the warring tribes of Stephenson’s latest dense metafiction define "bulshytt" as "a derogatory term for false speech in general," as well as commercial or political speech employing rhetorical subterfuge to "create the impression that something has been said."

The tribal and philosophical differences surrounding the use of bulshytt make life particularly hard for the impartial Mathic observer at the center of Anathem’s linguistic plots and webs. What is a Mathic observer, you ask? That would be you.

But be careful: Just as in our world, heavy bullshytt talkers in Anathem are "more prone to taking offense to bulshytt," Stephenson reads, especially when theirs is pointed out to them.
"This puts the Mathic observer in a difficult position," he says. "One is forced to use the offensive word and be excluded from polite discourse," or one becomes "a purveyor of bulshytt oneself, therefore lending strength to what one is trying to attack."

Fort Hood shootings suspect may have wired money to Pakistan

WASHINGTON – Authorities have been examining whether Fort Hood massacre suspect Nidal Malik Hasan wired money to Pakistan in recent months, an action that one senior lawmaker said would raise serious questions about Hasan's possible connections to militant Islamic groups.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., said sources "outside of the [intelligence] community" learned about Hasan's possible connections to the Asian country, which faces a massive Islamist insurgency and is widely believed to be Osama bin Laden's hiding place.

Hoekstra, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, would not identify the sources. But he said "they are trying to follow up on it because they recognize that if there are communications – phone or money transfers with somebody in Pakistan – it just raises a whole other level of questions."

It wasn't the UAW that did in Chrysler - it was the shitty product they built economy.

FTFY

I doubt it was because of their quality because over the years Chrysler progressed to being the higher end of the GM line. It was instead influenced by their product line which Ford took on in the face of higher fuel prices coinciding with our lack of a domestic energy policy even to this day.

Hi all.
Drive buy - another long day ahead.
After a long hard day yesterday I went to bed early. Whilst waiting for Northern Exposure to come on the local station, I forced myself to watch "Democracy Now". Amy Goodman had a medical expert from Harvard on her show. This individual was opposed to the current medical insurance plan that just passed the House-- for interesting reasons. First, she said the plan is a huge tax increase to support big pharmaceutical and the private health insurance industry. Also she stated that the public option was too puny. (of course the left want to scrap the whole system and install Medicare-for-everyone/Single Payer)... She said she thinks the whole thing should be scrapped and they need to start over from scratch. Interesting take.

I'm also pondering over who this "FAT CHICK" was? If he was on the phone with her, couldn't she verify it (as unwilling as she'd likely be to help this bum out) and doesn't that mean there's a cell phone log of it somewhere with both his and her provider? And I don't know how detailed of a record the cell companies keep but can they know where the calls were coming from, geographically?

In typical Army fashion they'll start from the bottom up according to rank starting with the privates. The generals and other officers will be reassigned and the noncoms will be reprimanded and have their records tainted for life. So in the case of Walter Reed I'm pretty sure they're going to go out of their way to lay blame on the lowest ranking service member first.

Tax-rich health plan

WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is considering a plan for higher taxes on upper-income earners to help finance health-care legislation he intends to introduce in the next several days, Democratic officials said yesterday.

The sources said one of the options would raise the tax that goes to Medicare, but only on income above $250,000 a year. Current law sets the tax at 1.45 percent of income, an amount matched by employers.

It was not known how large an increase Reid (D-Nev.) was considering, or whether it would also apply to a company's portion of the tax. President Obama has said he will not raise taxes on wage earners making less than $250,000.

The House passed its version of the legislation late last week on a near party-line vote of 220-215, a victory for Obama, as well as his allies in Congress.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I see that President Obama is again delaying making a decision on Afghanistan, even after getting multiple options from his national security team. What exactly is he waiting for? He's a model for indecision at a time when decisive action is warranted.

And his need for exit strategies smacks of political expediency, and not the US strategic and tactical goals. Some deliberation is fine, but now it appears to be nothing more than dithering and indecision because of political fallout.

Yep, unless and until all conditions are perfect, and unless and until the president of Afghanistan can be confirmed to have been elected by a process more reputable than the one in use in Chicago, and unless and until the health care thing and maybe even the cap and trade deal go through, BHO will do absolutely nothing but furrow his brow and call for more consideration, more study, more exploration of future opportunities for discussion towards the formulation of one or more alternate courses of action, each of which will require further deliberation and discussion.

Here is the problem - there is no obvious solution that fits a politically palatable narrative.

For being as educated as he is, one does wonder if Obama has read von Causewitz. Had he he'd know what the "ever worsening situation" is and how one is amoral to fight incrementally and "match capability" to an enemy.

When you fight a limited, incremental war with a determined enemy who has to spend very few resources to create "bad news" that gets broadcast into your country you create the conditions for a slow bleed and an ever worsening situation for yourself.

We need either a massive effort in Afghanistan or we need to declare victory, walk away and inform Pakistan that a portion of their airspace will be used by us without permission as an ongoing ordinance delivery corridor.

"Solutions" in the middle crafted by "the smart people" won't work because the enemy won't allow them to.

An Officer's Outrage Over Fort Hood
By Major Shawn Keller

As an officer in the United States Army, I'm angry for so many reasons over what happened at Ft. Hood. I'm angry that twelve of my fellow soldiers and a contractor were murdered. I'm angry that over thirty people have suffered life altering injuries from which they will never fully recover. I'm angry that the lives of so many families have been forever ruined. I'm angry that this happened on an Army post on American soil where soldiers should be safe. And I'm angry that the murderer was a terrorist who masqueraded as an Army officer for half a dozen years.

But as angry as I am at what happened, I'm even angrier that it was allowed to happen. Apparently, there was no shortage of warning signs that this guy identified himself more with Islamic Jihadists than he did with the US Army. From speeches, writings, conversations, affiliations and postings on Jihadist websites, there were more than enough dots to connect that should have exposed this guy as someone inclined to attack innocent people in the furtherance of a political, religious and ideological agenda. There were more than enough red flags raised that, at a minimum, should have gotten Hassan kicked out of the Army.

But just like September 11, those agencies and individuals charged with keeping America and Americans safe failed to connect the dots that would have saved lives. Jihadist rhetoric espoused by Hassan was categorically dismissed out of submissiveness to the concepts of tolerance and diversity. The Army as an institution has been neutered by decades of political correctness and the leaders in Hassan's chain-of-command failed to act accordingly out of fear of being labeled anti-Muslim and receiving a negative evaluation report. The counter-terrorism agencies knew Hassan was communicating with Al-Qaeda and dismissed it as academic research instead of delving deeper into the probability that a terrorist had infiltrated the ranks.

(snip)

Public opinion towards the war in Iraq was also sinking, and yet President Bush endorsed the surge and turned things around; it was decisive and it was bold, and it was in the face of flagging public opinion.

President Obama has a similar chance to turn things around in Afghanistan, and if he fails, it's on him. Maybe that's why he's dithering - or appearing to dither - it's on him. Trying to blame someone else isn't going to work this time. He's run out of envelopes (can't blame Bush, Congress, or anyone else).

Wall Street Faces ‘Live Ammo’ as Congress Aims to Unravel Banks

Today marks a decade to the day that President Bill Clinton signed the repeal of the Depression-era Glass-Steagall Act that split investment-banking from lending and deposit-taking. The repeal allowed the creation of Citigroup Inc., the financial colossus now propped up by $45 billion in taxpayer rescue funds. Financial firms are scrambling to prevent Congress from re- imposing the act.

I'm happy to see Glass Steagal hasn't been forgotten. The wingnuts will cry about socialism but luckily their support isn't required to get anything passed these days.

As part of redistricting, the borders of the district have changed over time, so while some parts were previously part of the 21st, represented by a Democrat, Mike McNulty, other parts have been GOP territory for far longer. It's a mixed bag.

And NY in general continues to lose seats as population moves away - primarily because of the high tax environment and more favorable business climate elsewhere; and the state faces a huge budget hole because of years of overspending (including this year when Paterson and the legislature - both chambers dominated by Democrats for the first time in decades) boosted spending more than revenues could ever be hoped to cover).

OT: Isn't this interesting...

The price of Pfizer’s Viagra has doubled since it was launched, according to a list of wholesale acquisition costs paid by pharmacies, obtained by BNET. In May 1999, a 100-count bottle of the blue diamonds cost $700. Today, that same bottle costs $1,457.61, a 108 percent increase, according to the list.

The blog of online pharmacy AccessRx notes that Pfizer has also been extracting more frequent price rises in addition to higher price rises:

… we’re not sure if you’ve been tracking price increases recently, but Pfizer began to raise the cost of Viagra twice a year instead of once a year in 2007. Including the last six price increases since Jan. 1, 2007, the price of Viagra has gone up 45.5%.

The WAC list indicates that while Pfizer was initially content to take price increases of 3 percent per year, in 2003 it doubled that increase. In January 2009, Pfizer bumped it up to 11 percent. Then in August it took another 5 percent.

Nice to know that while abortion is being stripped out of health care reform, Viagra will continue to be covered, as will all other, equally insanely priced, erectile dysfunction drugs. At least Pfizer will continue to profit!

433 lawhawk  Thu, Nov 12, 2009 8:18:18am

Speaking of NY-23, it seems that the Board of Elections is finding that the vote tallies are far closer than everyone thought. I don't know if Hoffman is going to overcome what now appears to be about a 3,000 vote margin, but a similar situation is present on Long Island, where the Nassau County executive's race is razor thin - separated by a couple hundred votes. The GOP challenger Ed Mangano is about 500 votes ahead of the incumbent Democrat, Tom Suozzi. Paper ballots remain to be counted, and it could be some time before the final count is tallied.

NY-23: Hoffman Campaign Looks at Overturning the Election

Today, the campaign is “looking very closely” at a recanvass of the district that has revealed, as recanvasses often do, screw-ups in the initial count. What was a 5,335-vote margin for Owens on election night is now a 3,026-vote margin, due largely to initial under-reporting of Hoffman votes in Oswego County and Jefferson County.

Man arrested for 'anti-Christian' mall disturbance

Police arrested 22-year-old Abdul Walid Hamid of Hayward on the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 4, after he reportedly tore a crucifix from a person's neck and scared others at Stoneridge Shopping Center.

Hamid, an employee at a mall kiosk near Starbucks, has been charged with battery, terrorist threats and grand theft.

According to reports, Hamid was yelling "Allah is power" and "Islam is great" while holding a pen in a fist over his head. Witnesses said he shouted anti-Christian comments, said police.

Lt. Mike Elerick of the Pleasanton Police Department said the man was not provoked and didn't threaten violence, but he committed robbery when he grabbed and broke a crucifix off someone's neck.

Good thing he wasn't armed.

Pfizer is profiting off a drug and has increased the price for a drug that enables them to conduct more R&D. Where do you think drug companies get the money to conduct R&D? It takes profits to make it happen, and drug companies have a limited time to act to take advantage of the patents before the drugs go generic. Still, Pfizer has gotten into trouble in the past (and presently) over how it has advertised some of its drugs, and with some of its testing regimes.

If Pfizer were doing this with a drug like Lipitor, you'd have a stronger case, but Viagra and other ED drugs are lifestyle enhancers, not medically necessary. They aren't by themselves causing increases in spending on health care. Cosmetic surgery is an $11 billion industry in 2007. Vanity is driving health care costs as well. Throw in taxes, fees, regulatory influences, and inflation, and you have some of the major drivers in out of control health care costs.

Like clockwork.

Drudge has this headline in bold red letters:

Looks bad. Perry is an embarrassment.

Perry: Obama Administration 'Hell-Bent' On Making America Socialist

Texas GOP Gov. Rick Perry accused President Barack Obama on Wednesday of “punishing” Texas and being “hell-bent” on turning the United States into a socialist country.

Speaking at a luncheon for a Midland County Republican Women’s group, Perry said that “this is an administration hell-bent toward taking American towards a socialist country. And we all don’t need to be afraid to say that because that’s what it is.”

Perry praised the tea party movement to the Republican activists in attendance, crediting the grassroots groups with discouraging some Democrats in Washington from pushing for a public option in the health care bill.

“If you all think those tea parties didn’t work, then let me tell you something,” Perry said. “When they all came home in August for those town hall meetings, they got an earful. Then they went back to Washington, D.C. and the Senate voted that public option down in committee with a majority of Democrats in the Senate.”

“I say it’s time to make tea parties twice as big as what they were,” Perry declared. “I think it’s time for us to stand up and say to Washington, D.C. that we are no longer going to accept that kind of stuff sitting down and being quiet.”

Below the stage where Obama spoke was a somber tribute to the fallen - 13 pairs of combat boots, each with an inverted rifle topped with a helmet. A picture of each person rested below the boots. After the ceremony, Obama walked solemnly along the row of boots, placing a commander in chief's coin next to each victim's photo in tribute.

Did Hasan wire money to Pakistan?

Authorities have been examining whether Fort Hood massacre suspect Nidal Malik Hasan wired money to Pakistan in recent months, an action that one senior lawmaker said would raise serious questions about Hasan’s possible connections to militant Islamic groups.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., said sources “outside of the [intelligence] community” learned about Hasan’s possible connections to the Asian country, which faces a massive Islamist insurgency and is widely believed to be Osama bin Laden’s hiding place.

One avenue of investigation is what Hasan was doing with his money. He was making $90k a year, and if he was living in quarters for $300 a month, that's quite a sizable amount he was accumulating unless the money was going somewhere else.

That somewhere else might be Pakistan.

This needs further confirmation, and investigation, but it once again raises red flags.

Leading Democratic hawk turns out to have been in line to make millions of dollars from the foreign policy positions he advocated:

What Galbraith kept completely concealed all these years was that a company he formed in 2004 came to acquire a large stake in a Kurdish oil field whereby, as the NYT put it, he "stands to earn perhaps a hundred million or more dollars." In other words, he had a direct -- and vast -- financial stake in the very policies which he was publicly advocating in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and countless other American media outlets, where he was presented as an independent expert on the region.

I didn't think the fact the Rahm and all the Pres's men saying they were snubbing fox as a hostile instrument of the opposition party, or that the other members of the Press Corps took note of it and objected, had any relation at all to the matter, and were, in fact, merely outright fabrications by well-known Fox screamers and weepers.

Owens is the first Democrat to represent some of the area (about 62%) that now makes up NY-23, since the 19th century. The district has only been in its current form since 2003. A large portion of the district -- including the largest city, Watertown — has not been represented by a Democrat since the 1850's. He was with the United Freedom Front, identified as a Marxist terrorist group active into the 80's. Doesn't seem likely, though. I mean, the group is called Marxist, but the picture of the guy shows him to be caucasian, and we all know that Marxist, like socialist, is only used domestically as a cover for racial animosity. The terrorist thing bothers me too, since it suggests that he might have been a radical, and there are no radicals, then or now, on the American left.

Hang in there. Soon she'll be screaming at you how you could do such a thing to her, but you'll get another mouth to feed and tuition bill from the deal. ;)

Porn strikes again, since the growth of porn is part on the reason woman seek these sorts of procedures. And I'm not some anti-loon, I'm just describing the cultural effects of the stuff. I'll leave the more detailed analysis to iceweasel, who has studied this matter more thoroughly.

re: #432 iceweasel

Exactly as government bureaucrats want it. Here we are, discussing abortion and Viagra, really nothing to do with the bigger picture of actual healthcare reforms. And this term reform needs to be dumped. What the House passed wasn't reform, it was a brand new government monstrosity entitlement. Doomed to fail because that's all it can do.

This is what you get when you turn over what should be your personal responsibility to Washington. While we argue about abortion and Viagra, they pick our bank accounts clean and control more and more of our lives while yucking it up at the latest DC hot spots.

We've arrived to a point where grown adults can't even take care of their own birth control and erections without relying on their fellow responsible citizens to pick up the tab. It's pathetic. Hey, it's expensive to go out clubbing while spending $15 per drink trying to get laid. Of course your neighbors should pick up the tab when you knock up some skank. And Viagra, of course that should be covered because after all, it's difficult to get it up when you're so fucking wasted trying to land the skank in the first place. Party on America.

Is there an ISO standard?

I don't think any of the victims are eligible. It has to be a wound received by an enemy action. I don't think Fratricide on a stateside US base would qualify.

I Agree. Here are the criteria for the Purple Heart:

1) In any action against an enemy of the United States.

(2) In any action with an opposing armed force of a foreign country in which the Armed Forces of the United States are or have been engaged.

(3) While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

(4) As a result of an act of any such enemy of opposing armed forces.

(5) As the result of an act of any hostile foreign force.

(6) After 28 March 1973, as a result of an international terrorist attack against the United States or a foreign nation friendly to the United States, recognized as such an attack by the Secretary of the Army, or jointly by the Secretaries of the separate armed Services concerned if persons from more than one service are wounded in the attack.

(7) After 28 March 1973, as a result of military operations while serving outside the territory of the United States as part of a peacekeeping force.

Perhaps they were inspired by Stewie Griffin. I do not recommend that you watch this video at work.

No. It was out during the daytime, which is an almost certain sign of rabies. Porky went to the dump. (We have a real old-fashioned dump here. Unfortunately, you're no longer allowed to set little dump fires and shoot the rats that emerge. Oh, the lost pleasures of youth!)

Good for you taking it out, then. Last year they had to shoot foxes almost every day around here. Same situation: If it's out during the day, it ain't normal.

Woman, "I need to warn you, I have acute angina."
Man, "Thank god, 'cause your tits are ugly!

Man arrested for 'anti-Christian' mall disturbance

Good thing he wasn't armed.

Can we cut off his hand for doing that? Or is he going to be selective about Sharia law?

I've been watching Arrested Development on hulu. There are times I miss having it so I could see a science show, but those times wouldn't make up for the cost of cable, so it's alright.

I've seen it - a waste of time, IMHO.

BTW, thanks for your moderating a bit last week when another poster was repeatedly calling me and another poster bigots, and smearing me with quotes from a youtube channel from which I'd posted a link or two - which I'd gotten from a net search. I'd reviewed the content of the vids I'd linked, but not the editorial content of that particular youtube channel.

From my link, Purple Heart Criteria

(6) It is not intended that such a strict interpretation of the requirement for the wound or injury to be caused by direct result of hostile action be taken that it would preclude the award being made to deserving personnel. Commanders must also take into consideration, the circumstances surrounding an injury, even if it appears to meet the criteria.

And as for the question of whether this was a "hostile action", it's pretty clear that it was.

Just a question. Does anyone here have Scientology commercials running in your area? They run here left and right.

They don't seem to be fools enough to waste air time tawkin to Texans. Ain't no Baptists gonna buy into Scientology.

But remember the shooting was done by a Commissioned Officer of the U.S. Army subject to the UMCJ. A crime (murder) committed by a military personnel on another military personnel.

re: #308 Big Steve

So I see from the Today show that it was Sgt Todd who actually dropped Hasan, not Sgt Munley. Although it sounds like Sgt Munley engaged him first and put herself in harms way by getting between Hasan and fleeing people.

It's like in football. If your tackle doesn't bring the runner down, but you slow him down enough that the next guy can get there and make the stop, you've been a real help on the play.
