Tech Note: RSS Reader Rewritten

Technology • Views: 3,384

Our left-column Ajax RSS widget, with a drop-down list of news sites and blogs that lets you check out their current RSS feeds, has been completely rewritten. The code now uses PHP’s native SimpleXML object library to parse all three flavors of RSS (0.92, 1.0, and 2.0) or ATOM feeds. Namespacing, XPATH, and attributes, oh my!

Another improvement fixes a small but annoying issue where strange characters would show up in place of em dashes, curly quotes, and other types of punctuation. These odd and ugly characters were caused by a difference in character encoding between the RSS feed and the LGF page where it’s being displayed. Rewriting everything to use my own RSS parsing code instead of an external library (like SimplePIE or MagpieRSS) helped me figure out the real reason for the problem. Once I understood it, the solution was amazingly simple. Just one line of code using the iconv function to convert the characters from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1 encoding:

$theString = iconv(“UTF-8”, “ISO-8859-1//TRANSLIT”, $theString);

The server-side PHP script also needs to send a ‘Content-Type’ header to set the character encoding to ISO-8859-1, before sending the formatted RSS data back to the calling Javascript routine. This ensures that all of our lovingly parsed characters look presentable.

header(“Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1”);

My RSS script caches the HTML output of each feed for 30 minutes, to avoid abusing anyone’s bandwidth. But if you’re really craving the hottest, freshest news, you can manually refresh the feed before that time limit by clicking the ‘Reload’ button next to the drop-down list.

quiet as a mouse...speaking of which...
I have a mouse living in a kitchen wall...I can here him in there...
one day I set 4 live traps and he just avoided them, so I set four brand new, old fashioned, break their neck style...a nice dab of peanut butter with a bit of cracker glued to the top...very stiff springs and sensitive too...the first night he ate 2 of the traps clean, not a trace of peanut butter...the next night he got the other 2...I reset all 4 and the same thing happened...he's very very good

On the spring traps I always had to tweak the latch plate a bit so that it was almost impossible to even get them to set. Otherwise the mice would just clean them off without tripping them, they really have to be set "hair trigger."

One of the favorite ID'ers is back... this time using the Ft. Hood attack to compare Darwin to Islam:

Do Ideas Have Consequences Only When They're Associated with Radical Islam?

My own view is that when you are taking the measure of an idea -- let's say Islam, or Darwinism -- it's a good rule of thumb at least to consider the relationship between it and its consequences, judged by the behavior of people who espouse the idea and publicly proclaim themselves as acting upon it.

Now that is a two edged sword if there ever was one.

If this is the right thread for tech questions, I've got a couple:

1) When I log out of the thread screen, but leave Spy open. It still
refreshes for 20 minutes or more. I don't see that as important, but
it's quirky.

2) My "new comments" button often fails to indicate fresh comments until
I randomly hit it. That might be my end, since I've had a lot of refresh
hangs.

3) What are the methods and protocol for posting links?

Some people will complain about posting off topic links too early in the thread. Depending on how fast of slow the thread is moving it might be best to wait for 50 or 100 comments before going off topic. Other than that most people will some a small excerpt and it's usually customary to not alter the original headline. Other than that there aren't really a lot of rules.

One Beijing shop owner wanted to see what Obama could do for sales. Liu Mingjie created "Oba Mao" T-shirts, with the president wearing the uniform of the Red Guards, who caused chaos during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s.

"It's just kind of avant garde," Liu said of the images, saying they were no longer political, just fashion.

He sold hundreds of the shirts, to both foreigners and Chinese, until authorities told shops selling the shirts to stop.

"They're not allowed to sell these things because there are images of Obama wearing the uniform of the Red Army," a woman answering the phone at the Dongcheng district Administration for Commerce and Industry said Thursday.

Do more of that, and then post under other names about how outrageous it is that some blogger would stoop to using half-naked images of nubile young women with guns. You'll get a million hits in no time.

Oh, and use the photos with the highest resolution and largest picture size possible, for the inevitable click-throughs.

I love the new Mac commercials.

This one will fix all the problems of the previous version.

Even though I still won't join the Cult of Mac.

I tried to pull an IP through the Command prompt...But no It thinks I want a bluetooth IP and can't find one.. No shit Windows..You are plugged into a cable Modem...This means the binding is in the wrong order in Network properties...I'll fix it..But it so frustrating...There is a way to do this in a higher level but I am used to low level commands...Microsoft treats it's users as dumbasses..Give me this weekend and I'll figure it out..
I'll be a good boy and use a high level wizard...grrr

Don't they have to wait till the policy period is over with and it is time for the employees to re-up?

The Dept of Labor can help them with that.

That's what the dog is for. Then you need a chimp to keep the dog away from the cat and the trap. To keep the chimp in line, you'll need to get a gorilla, who can be kept at bay by a lion, who can in turn be kept under control by Sigfried and Roy, who cannot be controlled by anyone or anything known to man.

Haven't checked yet. You might want to see, though. I wouldn't put it past them to try to cross-promote a successful product through a variety of brand outlets.

Not to mention that since Palin is a celebrity, or at least a household name, everybody is going to be covering it.

A brief survey of web pages right now.
ABC is all over it.
CBS has a headline about her visiting Ft. Hood.
Didn't see anything on USA Today front page.
CNN has it (Right next to a balloon boy headline).
Fox didn't have anything on the front page until the bottom promo for Hannity.
MSNBC has a video link about it.

So yeah, most everybody is on it.

That's the problem right there. Take my case. When I got married, the wife had a hamster. We moved, got a few guinea pigs, moved again, got a cat and our first child. Moved again and got another cat, a pond full of goldfish, and another kid. Then got another kid, a rabbit, and a fire-bellied toad. I figure in five more years, I'll have a fully-functioning, but oddly arranged ecosystem in my house.

There's one other thing you might try, as a last resort, to get rid of the bugger. It's dangerous, but it works every time it's tried. There is a novelty contact explosive that can be made with stuff you pick up at the drug store that, once dry, can be set off by the lightest vibration or change in pressure. I once used a few pieces, the size of grains of rice, atop pieces of cheese, to rid a basement of rats.

Any vibration, and it explodes. Rat touches bat, BOOM! If rat is close enough, it kills, if not, then it scares the holy hell outta the critter and he don't come back.

Glenn Beck claims health care bill includes insurance for dogs

"Do you know in the health care bill, we're now offering insurance for dogs," Beck said. "Do I need to say any more?"

Actually yes. Keep going.

"If you are somebody who is like, 'Well, I just, I'm struggling and we're barely making ends meet,' I'm not paying for your dog cardiologist!" Beck said. "Not gonna do it. I'm sorry, the dog goes nighty night."

There was some discussion between Beck and his executive producer about their own dogs' medical issues, whether or not they have pet insurance, and whether the Obama administration is putting animals on par with humans.

Like so many claims in the health care debate, Beck has taken a kernel of something in the bill and spun it to an absurd conclusion.

We get an amazing assortment of gifts from our cats.
Plus they're just fun.

We have one cat that just showed up a few months ago, we've been feeding him, and I've been worried about what to do during the winter cold months - figured if we let him in with the other 4 cats there would be a riot. Well, it got chilly last night and yes, we let him in, and no - there was no riot, once everyone had laid claim to their "spot", all was calm.

It's a last resort tactic, because you'll hear BANG! in the middle of the night when it goes off. A piece the size of a grain of rice sounds about like a firecracker, and bigger pieces aren't safe to make or use.

Glenn Beck claims health care bill includes insurance for dogs

What's really confusing is why Beck bothers making up this outrageous claim, when the actual contents of the bill he's spinning out of control are outrageous enough all by themselves. Why on earth should taxpayer dollars collected to pay for health care be used to subsidize loans for veterinarians?

To Congress: overreach much? This is why health care is thought to be a disaster in the making: you're using it, not to solve medical distribution problems, but as a shiny new pot of money you can dip your grubby, corrupt paws into to pay for all manner of unrelated projects, in a program so large and complex that fraud and waste are easily buried so deep they're irretrievable.

I agree. It's a complicated issue but conservatives have lost me with dishonest claims about the bill. It makes me wonder if there's just not enough real legitimate criticism.

There is legitimate criticism, but if it's brought up, we get treated to reductio ad beckham arguments, and things stop cold right there.

Why should health care become the pot of gold for every government department looking to pad their expense accounts? This is bullshit, and doesn't belong in such legislation. It calls into question how many other truckloads of crap the bill contains that have no bearing whatsoever on health care as it's being promoted by the bill's sponsors.

What works really well in the garden for mice and chipmunks is buckets of water. What you do is fill a painter's bucket about 3/4 full of water and cover the surface with sunflower seeds. Make sure there is a way for the little buggars to get into the bucket after those seeds, and wait. They're very poor swimmers.

With Few Strong Cases, Government Rushes Toward Plea Deals for Guantanamo Detainees

As the United States moves to prosecute Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and four others accused of being conspirators behind the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, federal and military prosecutors are racing each other to strike plea deals with at least a dozen additional Guantanamo detainees whose testimony could be used against some of the most notorious prisoners.

[...]

The unusual, competitive nature of the government's efforts, which pit the Justice Department against the Pentagon, was described by both defense attorneys and senior government officials. The officials acknowledged that the flurry of offers underscores the weaknesses in the cases against many of the Guantanamo inmates whom the Obama administration had hoped to prosecute.

229 freetoken  Fri, Nov 13, 2009 6:41:45pm

Oh, another paragraph from that article:

The stakes are highest perhaps for military prosecutors who have spent years preparing charges at Guantanamo Bay against some of the most serious terrorist suspects and are now fighting hard for plea bargains in order to keep some cases inside the military commissions system. Several defense attorneys said they had received competing offers for plea deals from federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York and military prosecutors at the Pentagon.

Sounds like quite the battle by prosecutors.

The new face of war.
(Over loudspeaker in three languages)
You have the right to surrender.
Any aggressive action you take after hearing this warning could lead to your death or imprisonment.
You have the right to an attorney.
You have the right to food acceptable to your beliefs, whatever they may be.
You have the right to sue you captors if and when you think your imprisonment is unjustified.
If you die before or during imprisonment, your family, heirs, or legal guardians may also have the right to sue.
You have the right to Geneva Convention agreements to which your country or countries never signed.
You have any and all rights afforded American criminals in the American criminal system, even though the conditions under which you were captured would entitle you to be shot under the Geneva Convention, which your country did not sign.
Any Americans hearing this warning while trying to kill American soldiers and working against the American government will not be tried as traitors.
That is all.

re: #109 Guanxi88

That link contains a nasty and actionable libel in it.

Actually that refers to recent litigation where Beck tried to shut down that domain name:
Glenn Beck's UDRP Complaint Gets The Smack Down

In the present context, this Panel considers that if Internet users view the disputed domain name in combination with a visit to Respondent’s website, the “total effect” is that of political commentary by Respondent, capable of protection as political speech by the First Amendment under the Hustler Magazine standard. Respondent appears to the Panel to be engaged in a parody of the style or methodology that Respondent appears genuinely to believe is employed by Complainant in the provision of political commentary, and for that reason Respondent can be said to be making a political statement.

More background at:

Memes strike back: Gerbils, gay blood elves, and Glenn Beck

How better to give Beck a taste of his own medicine than by wondering publicly why he has never addressed the rumor that he raped and murdered a young girl in 1990? No one's saying that Beck really did it… but if he has nothing to hide, why won't he deny the tale?

You are awesome Mandy..Good night my dear

My neighbors across the street went to adopt a baby one year. They went through the whole red tape infested process. The girl who was giving up the baby was young and didn't want the baby. They stayed in touch with her right up to the birth. When the baby was born the mother decided to keep the baby. My neighbors were devastated.

A few months later a friend of ours knew someone who was going to bive her baby up for adoption. She already had 4 kids and didn't want to rais another one. We told our neighbors about it. They were afraid to get heartbroken again but decided to go for it. She is a beautiful 8 year old girl today in a home full of love.

No, never noticed it.

It's a great place, you can still find small towns, where everyone knows each other & it's friendly. Or you can enter the maw of the monster.

L.A. proved too much for the man,
So he's leavin' the life he's come to know,
He said he's goin' back to find
Ooh, what's left of his world,
The world he left behind
Not so long ago.

He's leaving,
On that midnight train to Georgia,
And he's goin' back
To a simpler place and time.
And I'll be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia,
I'd rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine.

That surtax takes effect on January 1, 2011, or the day the Bush tax rates of 2001 and 2003 expire. Today's capital gains tax rate of 15% would bounce back to 20% because of the Bush repeal and then to 25.4% with the surtax. That's a 69% increase, overnight.

Ex-congressman gets 13 years in freezer cash case

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A former Louisiana congressman who famously hid $90,000 cash in his freezer was sentenced Friday to 13 years in prison for taking bribes, the longest term ever imposed on a congressman for bribery charges.

William Jefferson, a Democrat who represented parts of New Orleans for nearly 20 years, was convicted in August of taking roughly $500,000 in bribes and seeking millions more in exchange for using his influence to broker business deals in Africa.

The sentence was still far less than the nearly 30 years prosecutors had sought.

Agents investigating the case found $90,000 wrapped in foil and hidden in boxes of frozen pie crusts in his freezer.

If that tax hike passes, then the level of capital flight from the US in 2010 will put America into a full-on Depression. Many of us would lose our jobs, I'd probably go bankrupt. The only good thing about it would be that Nancy Pelosi and her crew would be run out of Congress on a rail. This bill is an economy killer.

We had huge increases in tax revenue for several years and the idjits just kept on spending.

McCain campaign fires back at Palin over book

Former McCain strategist John Weaver was more direct in his criticism, slamming Palin for using the book for "petty and pathetic" score-settling.

"Sarah Palin reminds me of Jimmy Stewart in the movie 'Harvey,' complete with imaginary conversations. All books like these are revisionist and self-serving, by definition," Weaver wrote in an e-mail to Politico. "But the score-settling by someone who wants to be considered a serious national player is petty and pathetic."

"The problem wasn't who her interview was with, the problem was her interview," he added. "Couric asked no trick questions. This just seems to be an attempt to obscure as bad a performance since Roger Mudd asked Ted Kennedy that simple question." (Kennedy fumbled for an answer when Mudd asked him in 1979 why he wanted to be president — a performance thought to have severely damaged his campaign.)

Palin did not respond to a request for comment.

Pass the popcorn.

There's more about that too:

The excerpt also described Wallace as having aggressively "pushed for Katie Couric and the CBS Evening News" because "Katie really needed a career boost."

[snip]

Reflecting on the first set of interviews Palin did as the GOP vice presidential nominee, Salter said that the sit-downs were "discussed and agreed to by senior members of the campaign staff in consultation with the candidate" and that Wallace did not choose either the journalists or the outlets Palin spoke to.

"Nicolle Wallace, along with others, was tasked with helping the governor prepare for some of her interviews. She did not decide which interview requests the candidates would accept. Nor was she tasked with securing the candidates' agreement," Salter said.

Sarah is starting to look more and more like she not being honest.

Just saw a post over at Volokh that blew me away. David Kopel wants Martin Heidegger's work reclassified from "philosophy" to "Nazism" because Heidegger was a Nazi. Read the comments. He gets his ass handed to him many times over. Yes - Heidegger was a Nazi but his scholarship has nothing to do with German Nationalism or racial theory. And Being and Time predates the Nazi party.

It is like saying we should rename NASA to NAZA because Wernher Von Braun got American rockets flying.

Anyways, read the comments and notice the sort of Tea Party reductionism from the few who support the idea (including Iowahawk).

Unf*ckingbelievable! Is this what it's come down to?

Heidegger was a brilliant philosopher. Heidegger was a nazi. The former ought to have prevented the latter. That it did not makes the matter worthy of study, and does not diminish his work as a philosopher one whit.

Right, Strauss shouldn't be listened to because Hitler liked him. He was 72 when he did this as a "Nazi Official":

His decision to produce Friedenstag in 1938, a one-act opera set in a besieged fortress during the Thirty Years' War – essentially a hymn to peace and a thinly veiled criticism of the Third Reich – during a time when an entire nation was preparing for war, has been seen as extraordinarily brave. With its contrasts between freedom and enslavement, war and peace, light and dark, this work has been considered by some to be more related to Fidelio than to any of Strauss's other operas. Production ceased shortly after the outbreak of war in 1939.

The last thing ANYONE needs is greater exposure to me. How my wife has managed to put up with it is more than I know.

I've told her before, in other discussions, that I question her intelligence, judgment, and sense of self-respect, and cite the fact that she married me as the chief evidence against her on these counts.

"I mean, how the hell can anyone respect someone so desperate or foolish as to link her lot with mine? For pete's sake, I have no self-respect whatsoever, and I know myself better than anyone could. You're a poor judge of character." And so on.

Mine was a unique upbringing, with the classical troika of hatred, abuse, and contempt (three of the four cardinal virtues of slavic family life, the fourth being alcoholism).

If more people took a good long look at themselves, they'd end up like me, who won't shave in a mirror just to avoid having to look myself in the face.

However, precisely because I'm full of self-loathing, I am able to live peacefully with most people; a lack of self-respect and personal dignity makes it far easier to get along with your fellow man, as you know they must suffer the same as you do.

Albert "Leslie" Cochran — Austin's homeless, thong-clad celebrity — remains in a semi-vegetative state at University Medical Center Brackenridge after he was found unconscious on a sidewalk by a taxi driver Oct. 3, according to a public health official with knowledge of the incident.

The official said that Cochran's injuries are life-threatening and that if he survives, he may experience "life-altering effects," including remaining in a vegetative state.

"He's very, very sick," the official said.

Atheist Billboard Prompts Death Threats

If you don’t believe in God we’ll fucking kill you!

The Cincinnati Coalition of Reason (Cin CoR) put a billboard on Tuesday to promote atheism. By Wednesday they were told it had to come down due to the amount of death threats received over the sign that trumpeted: “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone.”

No, no he is not.

Three days after all eight saboteurs were in custody, FDR sent Biddle a memo making clear his expectations. "The two Americans are guilty of treason," he told the attorney general. "I do not see how they can offer any adequate defense. . . it seems to me that the death penalty is almost obligatory."

As for the six German citizens, "They were apprehended in civilian clothes. This is an absolute parallel of the Case of Major [John] Andre in the Revolution and of Nathan Hale. Both of these men were hanged." The President hammered home his point once more: "The death penalty is called for by usage and by the extreme gravity of the war aim and the very existence of our American govemment."

Well, sure. I've been working on my autobiography. I'm thinking I'll call it "My Struggle". It's a combo of life lessons and political philosophy of how to advance the secular Deist agenda and get rid of the Christian right by the selective use of propaganda and, if necessary, internment camps.

I think it'll be a big seller!

I don't know how to answer that. We cannot allow Afghanistan to be used as a terrorist haven. What we need to figure our is how to prevent that without destroying the country (an option I am not, repeat not, advocating). A troop surge seems to me the best choice.
