That's some top rate dancing by the bearded harmony singer. He really complements Mladek's complete lack of motion and charisma. Though his sportcoat speaks louder than he does.

I wanna know what happened to that guy's neck (the bearded guy). It seems to be non-existent.

Stunned silence is the only appropriate response to this.

Lizards!

I have a question, I'm sure it's been asked dozens upon dozens of times before, but I don't know where to begin the search for past archives for something like this.

My sister has always been extremely apolitical. My father and I are both fairly conservative (particularly in the economic and foreign policy sense).

Recently my sister decided to start reading political book and get herself informed and I just found out the first book she got was a recommendation from her boss.

Lo and behold, it's Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine". She messaged me today, basically saying "Have you ever heard of this book, it seems REALLLY liberal".

Bottom line, after explaining who Naomi Klein is and what she is known for, I convinced her to let me recommend the next book she reads. Now, I'm left with the task of finding a book that does a good job of presenting the world from a conservative view-point at a level that someone not-so-involved will be able to grasp.

I don't think my sister is looking to "choose sides" at this point, but I think she is looking for enough material to be able to follow political conversations, and I don't want all her ammunition to be from the likes of Naomi Klein.

Any recommendations?

Give her "Witness" by Whittaker Chambers. It lays out an entire way of being and way of life in the biography of one man, who went from Communist agent to devout quaker and anti-Communist, all while maintaining the same moral beliefs and world-view.

36 Noah's Arrrgh  Sat, Nov 14, 2009 1:11:41pm

The signer with the fancy dance steps is the inimitable Ivo Pešák.

Here's the funny thing: even though this is quite old (1978), this video apparently went viral in Russia last year, and according to a Russian colleague of mine, it could often be heard in cell phone ring tones while riding the metro.

There's something of a crazed genius in Czech videos. František Ringo Čech had a pop hit in the 80s called "Pražákům těm je tu hej", which means "Prague inhabitants have it great". The main lines are "Pražákům těm je tu hej, ty nikam nezablouděj", which means "Prague inhabitants have it great, they never get lost". The rest of the song basically lists some of the streets in Prague.

In the video, a bearded Ringo Čech plays an angst-ridden country bumpkin running around Prague with his goat trying to figure out where to pitch his tent to a 1980s techno-grunge beat. In other words, it has all the ingredients for a great video! ;-)

Music. I've heard that at a performance of Die Zauberflöte in 1791 Mozart had a gentleman walk onstage and blow into a pane of glass in a similar fashion. And you don't call HIM a comedian, do you?

I think she just wants to learn more about current events in general, with some historical backing to it. Something to give her a compass with which to navigate major news events that go on.

Nothing too philosophical, but with concrete examples of why things are the way they are.

Sorry if I can't be more specific, when it comes down to it, if it's a good book and readable, I'm sure it'll be fine, but I just want to give her something that balances whatever anti-capitalist and "america is a imperial power" trife she'll be reading in the Klein book.

I know Obama is president of the world and everything, but I don't have a problem with such a young man showing a little deference to an elderly member of royalty. Heck, he may have apologized for Fat Man and Little Boy at the same time. I can't see it changing anything in the relations between our two countries, except perhaps for the better.

If it is a collection of his columns, much of it has probably been overtaken by events. If it's a "real" book of bigthink, it's probably worth a read. I recommend reading some of Walter Lacquer's long essays on the middle east, too. They're available on the web, or in whatever periodical index you may have access to.

Body parts sold to kebab stand, police say

MOSCOW - Russian police have arrested three homeless people suspected of eating a 25-year-old man they had butchered and selling other bits of the corpse to a local kebab house.

Suspicions were raised when dismembered parts of a human body were found near a bus stop in the outskirts of the Russian city of Perm, 720 miles east of Moscow.

Three homeless men with previous criminal records have been arrested on suspicion of setting upon a foe with knives and a hammer before chopping up his corpse to eat, local investigators said in a statement.

5,000 Parisians Find No Free Cash

A large, unruly crowd has forced an Internet site to cancel a promotional stunt to hand out tens of thousands of euros in cash in Paris.

The French Internet company Mailorama.fr had planned to throw envelopes of cash to passers-by from a bus stop near the Eiffel Tower.

About 5,000 people gathered on the Champs de Mars Saturday to await the handout, blocking traffic and leading to security fears.

Police say officers and Mailorama decided jointly to call off the stunt.

Stephane Boukris, head of marketing for Mailorama, said, "We wanted to ensure the safety of our staff and this is why the event was cancelled. We weren't up to dealing with all of this."

The organizers had planned a dozen security guards from a private company. Metal barriers installed were crossed by the crowd.

Some in the crowd were apparently angry about the cancellation, overturning a car and throwing projectiles at police. Ten people were arrested.

They told me it was the Republican platform.

Could you imagine, though?

My favorite was "Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion" as in:

"We are Republicans, and don't propose to leave our party and identify ourselves with the party whose antecedents have been rum, Romanism, and rebellion. We are loyal to our flag."

What Burchard did, by reciting this triplet, was to saddle the Democrats with being on the wrong side of three of the most sensitive issues of the times:

* Prohibition --- a controversy which the Women's Christian Temperance Union and others had brought to fever pitch;
* Catholicism --- a feared minority of the time (all actions were considered as coming from Rome), and
* The Civil War --- which had but twenty years before, been brought to its bloody end, leaving in its wake no end of bitterness on both sides.

What times! Back then, even calumny from low fellows had a certain grace lacking in today's world. I don't mind a well-turned phrase, even if it's slanderous. But stupid slander and illiterate disputes irritate the hell outta me.

Hirohito DID NOT sign the surrender, as Emperor, such an act was beneath his dignity. If I remember correctly, the prime Japanese signatory was FM Shigimetsu. A third character, Prince Konoye (Hirohito's Cousin) was swept up in the Post War dragnet, and because of bad information killed himself in prison - Gen. MacArthur wanted him to be "Head Rat" in lieu of Hirohito. Konoye was told he would be the "fall-guy." A long story, for another time.

Decatur Deb -

I tend to believe that. Much of the immediate Post War relationship between the US and Japan had an air of "Kabuki" about it. For instance, the document recognized the position of Emperor and the Japanese Royal Family, it did not Guarantee the position to Hirohito, Hirohito earned it by his cooperation. Bet the Japanese translation was more like "Armistice" or "Cease-Fire."
It was a spoonful of Sugar that let the Medicine go down, probably saving millions of American, British Empire and Japanese lives in the process.

Come now, surely you have learned that any invocation or use of The Name that is not made in tones suitably awe-struck and grateful, any mention of any action, statement, or policy pronouncement of the Male Palin that does not include praises of his mighty works and hopes for his complete and total triumph over the deranged bigots who stand arrayed against him is prima facie evidence of ODS?

Similarly, any concern or criticism of any aspect of He Who Condescended to Lead us from Darkness into the Light is Beckhist nontroversy at best.

I mean, where have you been the past year? It's not that hard to understand.

re: #20 Joo-LiZ

Staying with Canadians, how about "Shakedown" by Ezra Levant? It's specifically about the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Well, perhaps someone ought to be chastised over this...

I suspect that the President simply wanted to demonstrate, while in the country, that the US honors the traditions and people. Given the very touchy issue of servicemen in Japan and the controversies over the recent crimes, that the Commander in Chief of said servicemen would be seen as being sensitive to the culture is a positive thing. However, doing it properly would have been better, IMO.

The Onion: Area Man Passionate Defender Of What He Imagines Constitution To Be

According to Mortensen—an otherwise mild-mannered husband, father, and small-business owner—the most serious threat to his fanciful version of the 222-year-old Constitution is the attempt by far-left "traitors" to strip it of its religious foundation.

"Right there in the preamble, the authors make their priorities clear: 'one nation under God,'" said Mortensen, attributing to the Constitution a line from the Pledge of Allegiance, which itself did not include any reference to a deity until 1954. "Well, there's a reason they put that right at the top."
...
"Dad's great, but listening to all that talk radio has put some weird ideas into his head," said daughter Samantha, a freshman at Reed College in Portland, OR. "He believes the Constitution allows the government to torture people and ban gay marriage, yet he doesn't even know that it guarantees universal health care."

re: #339 brookly red

There is a lot going on in that brief greeting between the President and Emperor.

In this case, where there is such an obvious age difference, the younger person would naturally be considered inferior.

However, this is also a visiting head of state... which makes it much more complicated than normal social interactions.

I never "bowed" to younger people while I was in Japan, in any personal situation... only to those who were much older than I.

From my experience, in these days in most of daily life bowing is not part of the young person's life. They only do it when they know they have to (such as on their job.) As we work up the age scale the adherence to tradition was stronger.

IMO it would have been proper for the President to have done a modest, quick, proper (from the waist, bending the back not the legs, hands by the side with the fingers curled) bow. The length of time one remains bowed is critical. In this case the President should have done a bow that was not very long in time, but done formally and correctly.

Yes, if I were in charge of the protocol I would have had him do it differently.

Nevertheless, I have no problem with him bowing... When in Japan do as the Japanese.

“didn’t believe in the theory that human beings — thinking, loving beings — originated from fish that sprouted legs and crawled out of the sea” or from “monkeys who eventually swung down from the trees.”

I don't believe that, either.

So let me ask, if you don't believe that we evolved from such animals, then why does a comparative DNA analysis tell a different story? Was our own DNA designed to lead us to a false conclusion?

Comparing Chimp, Human DNA
ScienceDaily (Oct. 13, 2006) — Most of the big differences between human and chimpanzee DNA lie in regions that do not code for genes, according to a new study. Instead, they may contain DNA sequences that control how gene-coding regions are activated and read.

"The differences between chimps and humans are not in our proteins, but in how we use them," said Katherine Pollard, assistant professor at the UC Davis Genome Center and the Department of Statistics.
Pollard and colleagues at UC Santa Cruz led by David Haussler looked for stretches of DNA that were highly conserved between chimpanzees, mice and rats. Then they compared those sequences to the human genome sequence, to find pieces of DNA that had undergone the most rapid change since the ancestors of chimps and humans diverged about five million years ago.
They found 202 "highly accelerated regions" or HARs, which showed a high rate of evolution between humans and chimps. Only three of those regions contain genes that are likely to encode proteins. The most dramatically accelerated region, HAR1, appears to make a piece of RNA that may have a function in brain development.

You have GOT to be joking! We didn't evolve from chimps- we have a common ancestor.

Neanderthals died out and they were not spread out that far. They were in europe. Yes- there are differences between the two species, and yes- both came from a common ancestor.

Sarah Palin: Creationist

Now we have a definitive statement. She is indeed a creationist.

Was this ever in doubt? I thought this was made clear during her campaign, although she suggested that she wouldn't try to influence educational policy to accommodate creationism/ID.

Setting that aside, her "analysis" of evolutionary theory is a vast improvement on the "two mosquitoes and the mud hole" theory of Mark Sanford. She has about the same level of understanding that the Bishop of Oxford demonstrated to T.H. Huxley in 1860.

There must have been some interbreeding. There are genetic (morphological) throwbacks here and there, and particularly in southwestern Europe - part of their old territory.

Well, like I stated. It's one of several plausible theories. I don;'t see it as being "racist" that modern humans and Neanderthals were separate species that were not interfertile. I'm not saying I'm a proponent of that theory, but it's plausible

Did you read any of the paper I linked?

DNA was extracted from the Neandertal-type specimen found in 1856 in western Germany. By sequencing clones from short overlapping PCR products, a hitherto unknown mitochondrial (mt) DNA sequence was
determined. Multiple controls indicate that this sequence
is endogenous to the fossil. Sequence comparisons with human mtDNA sequences, as well as phylogenetic analyses, show that the Neandertal sequence falls outside the variation of modern humans. Furthermore, the age of the common ancestor of the Neandertal and modern human mtDNAs is estimated to be four times greater than that of the common ancestor of human mtDNAs. This suggests that Neandertals went extinct without contributing mtDNA to modern humans.

Shelby is a NOTORIOUS Fibber, generally for a Good Cause. All the major "Motorhead" Magazines tested his first Cobra Prototype - Re-Painted for every test so nobody caught on that it was not as yet in series production.
Hell, Shelby Lied to AC - saying he had Ford Engines and to Ford - saying he had AC Chassis. He did it so convincingly that both Ford AND AC came through - and the Cobra Mk. I was born.
As for "Replicars" - they have to meet current regulations. "Series Continuations" as Shelby tries to do - DO NOT. Shelby uses his position as a "manufacturer" back in the day to come up with Serial #'d Certificates of Origin - a/k/a - vehicle birth certificates to which in the 21'st Century he "completes" late 1960's/early 1970's vehicles. It is a Fraud to CA and US authorities, yet a lovable one, in so few numbers at such astronomical prices that it makes almost NO difference to overall safety and emissions.
It is more like the Shelby (Semi) Retirement Fund. Good on 'ya Carroll.
