Not Caring About the Bow

Instead of getting really, really upset that Barack Obama bowed to Japanese Emperor Akihito while visiting Japan where bowing is a custom that goes back thousands of years, I’ve been working on some pieces of The Blog’s back-end code, playing Batman: Arkham Asylum, going for a short bike ride, taking a shower, eating some pasta with marinara, reinstalling the Flash player when it stopped playing audio, getting my Internet connection working with Windows XP and Vista in VMWare Fusion 3 (had to switch settings to “Bridged (Autodetect),” of course, how could I not have known?), combining the bit.ly API Javascript code with John Resig’s Easy Retweet, playing some more Batman: Arkham Asylum, and now here I am listening to Elvis Costello. What’s up with you?

I am still pissed that my debit card was compromised. How the hell did that happen? I shopped at Marshall's last week, and it is well known that TJ Maxx database was hacked last year. They said it was fixed. Well, obviously it wasn't. Serves me right for using my card at Marshalls, which is the only place that sells Ahava products cheaper than the Zionist Mall.

Why would I try to outcheap myself? From now on, I will only buy Ahava from the Zionist Mall, and fuck Marshall's.

Speaking of Afton. From a place where nothing ever happens...

Explosives scare traced to Afton man

State authorities found black powder, grenades, guns and mortar rounds in an Afton man’s home after a scare on Delphine Avenue in Waynesboro, according to court records.

Authorities armed with search warrants rifled through two properties belonging to Mark S. Bales, 51, after the Waynesboro Police Department connected a suspicious drug package with a metal pipe sticking out of the side to him, according to a search warrant in Augusta County Circuit Court. Police closed the street Nov. 2 after finding the package.

Virginia state police Special Agent Robert W. Henderson obtained a search warrant for 25 Old Stony Ridge Road in Afton a short time later. Authorities last week found dozens of items, including grenades, guns, eight computers, jugs filled with black and aluminum powder, four mortar rounds and fireworks, according to the warrant.

Henderson also found six videotapes with footage of Bales instructing viewers how he uses the explosives, frequently inserting them into stuffed animals. In the videos Bales proceeds to blow the toys to smithereens, according to Henderson’s report in the warrant.

Investigators collected other stuffed animals at Bales’ Afton property.

Authorities also searched 1555 Mt. Torrey Road in Lyndhurst where they found pistol blanks, trip wire devices, rifle and shotgun barrels and different colored wires, the warrant shows.

Neither Henderson nor Bales’ defense attorney, Thomas Weidner of Waynesboro, could be reached for comment.

For my age, a lot. But I'm talking about several decades' worth of not "repeating" = 50% savings on shampoo at, say, six bucks a bottle. And 100% saved on conditioner.

Call it several nice dinners for two at the finest French restaurant in town, with cocktails, appetizer, main course, wine, cheese course, dessert, cognac, espresso, and a big tip. These things add up.

A Nazi patrol comes up to you and asks where they are; you, a good God-fearing Christian, can either lie and say you don't know (which would be bad, because, like, lying is a sin), or you could tell the truth, and the Nazis would zip off and search for and presumably execute the family. What do you do?

As a non-Bible believing amoral godless atheist, my first thought was that this is trivial: you lie your pants off. The 'crime' of telling a lie pales into insignificance against the crime of enabling the death of fellow human beings.

According to Bodie Hodge of AiG, though, I'm wrong. The good Christian should reject lies, Satan's tools, in all circumstances, and should immediately 'fess up the location of the Jews. He backs it up with Bible quotes, too.

Yikes!

Real men write in machine code.

I once wrote a bit-banging asynchronous serial output interrupt routine for an 8bit processor (sx-28). That part required only about ten instructions. Dispatching (setup and sending) a byte required about two.

Anyone planning on attending the London Olympics?

Olympic security chiefs have ruled out using the Army to protect competitors and spectators at the 2012 Games – and instead they will rely on thousands of teenagers taking a 30-hour events safety course.

The move has provoked anger among military figures, who believe Army expertise is needed to ensure the London Olympics are safe from a potential terrorist outrage.

It also comes after Army Chief of Staff, General Sir David Richards, said worry over Olympic security ‘kept him awake at night’.

Whitehall sources have revealed that the military will be called upon only to carry out ‘niche roles’.

The task of protecting the Olympic Park will rely on private security staff and 6,000 16 to 19-year-olds taking a specially developed BTEC qualification.

The military would be required only in ‘extreme situations’ where Special Forces troops might be needed.

Sources said they might also be used to supplement police and civilian services or ‘to aid the civilian community’ in a similar way to their use during the 2007 floods.

Wow, that's pretty damn shocking...

As Christians, we need to keep in mind that Jesus Christ reigns. All authority has been given to Him (Matthew 28:18), and He sits on the throne of God at the right hand of the Father (Acts 2:33; Hebrews 8:1). Nothing can happen without His say. Even Satan could not touch Peter without Christ’s approval (Luke 22:31). Regardless, if one were to lie or not, Jesus Christ is in control of timing every person’s life and able to discern our motives. It is not for us to worry over what might become, but rather to place our faith and obedience in Christ and to let Him do the reigning. For we do not know the future, whereas God has been telling the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10).

The comparison to Islamic and Christian fundamentalists is often overblown but not in this case. using blind faith and scripture to override an easy moral decision is why the Islamic world in in the shape it's in today. yikes, indeed.

It is rather funny to hear the "never an empire" meme from some conservatives, since many of our turn of the century presidents were quite open and proud of our new status as a world empire. All it takes is studying up on the Spanish American war of 1898. I think the kneejerk reaction to any "empire" language is that to even say the word is to automatically be anti-American. And of course that's utter nonsense. Are there some who are anti-American who talk about empire? Of course. It's the same kind of illogic that equates evolutionary biology with social Darwinism. But it's mentally easy and that's why it's so popular.

Linky?
Too lazy to search for myself...

Sorry, no link. I downloaded it through a torrent (illegally) since UK television isn't allowed here for some reason. The UK version is different from ours because in the US Ramsay goes into really crappy dinners serving canned food, yells and screams like a maniac and gets them to serve fresh food. The UK version tackles a wider variety of problems; Places with good food and cooking that aren't organized correctly, posh places where the cooks are too fancy, and some shitholes too. The UK version shows a slightly different side to Ramsay, he's more of a motivational/inspirational element about passion. In the US he's just kind of a mean ranting dickhead.

re: #255 Irenicum

It is rather funny to hear the "never an empire" meme from some conservatives, since many of our turn of the century presidents were quite open and proud of our new status as a world empire. All it takes is studying up on the Spanish American war of 1898. I think the kneejerk reaction to any "empire" language is that to even say the word is to automatically be anti-American. And of course that's utter nonsense. Are there some who are anti-American who talk about empire? Of course. It's the same kind of illogic that equates evolutionary biology with social Darwinism. But it's mentally easy and that's why it's so popular.

And if we're not and never were an empire, why is New York the "Empire State" and WTF was Manifest Destiny all about?

Trying to answer that is what theologians have been trying to do for millenia. I won't dare to pretend to know the ultimate answer. All I know is that what I've read over the years, both from a strong sovereignty of God viewpoint (typically Calvinistic) and a strong free will viewpoint (typically Arminian), ultimately can't answer the question totally. I lean towards the strong sovereignty view myself, but freely acknowledge that they/we sometimes don't take freely chosen action seriously enough. Even the book of Job ultimately doesn't answer the question. It simply declares that God has his reasons without giving us an answer to what those reasons are. It's one of those Deut. 29:29 things. What's clear is for us, what isn't, belongs to God.

A story that my Scandinavian history teacher told me, and which I profoundly hope was true, was of an old blind woman with glass eyes during the WWII occupation. She heard feet running down the street and knew someone was running from the Nazis. She told the man to run into her home.

The Nazis came to her door. "Is there a Jew in here?"

She faced them, took her eyes out, and said. "You should not have come here, for I am a demon from hell!" And leaped out at them, gaping eye sockets and all. They ran off.

Well, it would be nice for it to be true.

That was always my question in college, but I never got an entirely satisfactory answer. Traditional Calvinism placed a high cultural premium on hard work and social responsibility, but I never fully understood how the theology didn't just kill everyone with depression.

Of course, Oliver Cromwell was battling depression his whole life, and among other things, was apparently morbidly obsessed with whether he was saved or not.

The protagonist points out how silly it is to break human emotions down to two simple concepts, eventually telling the teacher to forcibly insert the life line into her anus :) )

Yeah. And it's not the same meaning--bowing in Japan versus bowing to a Saudi king, that is. One is a cultural sign of respect and typical way of greating, the other is a sign of subjugation.

Of major import. Japanese citizens on the street bow to one another. Saudis don't.

Sometimes, I think the big issues really boil down to very simple concepts. It is sometimes the very simple that is the most difficult to understand. The simplist of issues can produce many who pontificate ad nausem, making the issue bigger than it really is.

[I was supposed to go to a single event in SF tonight but after a long work week, and the fact that I still really, really enjoy being single without commitments, I took a pass.] Upon waking up I made some wheat pasta with marinara sauce, roasted up broccoli with pesto sauce, and had some baked tilapia for the dead animal. re: #351 EmmmieG

That sounds like something from the sagas--very Norse. Lovely!

I once had the great honor to sit in on a talk by a man who had participated as a college student in the smuggling of Denmark's Jewish community out of the country. Amazing guy. So modest you wanted to cry.

I sat down to do some editing on my portion of the cookbook tonight but I realized that I don't have a sample to work from. I really like your formatting instincts and I'd like to make sure that I stick with whatever format you're using for the rest of the book (indents, headlines, spacing etc). Could you email me a sample recipe that you've formatted?

You should have 1 document attached to my email, and a link.
The document is the pdf of the actual "main" section of the cookbook. That document is the actual cookbook format.

The link is to the originals from which the main section was put together.

What we need to make sure is that the pdf is correct, and that all the ingredients and directions listed on the originals are in the pdf, spelling and punctuation are correct, etc.

If you are missing the pdf document attachment, let me know and I'll resend it to you.

Cromwell was during the Puritan era. And Puritans had as their peculiar weakness an overweening introspection that was anxiety inducing to say the least. As much as I find myself on the Calvinistic side of the equation on many theological issues, I'm the first to admit that this is a major problem among the most devout Calvinists. That's why, ultimately, I'd much rather be "labeled" by Jesus than anyone or anything else.

Yes, the simplest explanation is often the most likely to be the correct one, however god, and the absence of god equating with evil, isn't an explanation.

Bertrand Russel attacks this argument best, so I'll quote him directly:

One form is to say there would be no right or wrong unless God existed. I am not for the moment concerned with whether there is a difference between right and wrong, or whether there is not: that is another question. The point I am concerned with is that, if you are quite sure there is a difference between right and wrong, then you are in this situation: Is that difference due to God's fiat or is it not? If it is due to God's fiat, then for God himself there is no difference between right and wrong, and it is no longer a significant statement to say that God is good. If you are going to say, as theologians do, that God is good, you must then say that right and wrong have some meaning which is independent of God's fiat, because God's fiats are good and not bad independently of the mere fact that he made them. If you are going to say that, you will then have to say that it is not only through God that right and wrong came into being, but that they are in their essence logically anterior to God.

Cato, have you ever read "Myths America Lives By" by Richard Hughes? I think you'd like it. It deals with various national mythologies that have guided our self understanding throughout our history. Of the five mythologies dealt with, four are neutral, and one is always malignant. The malignant one is the myth of innocence. It makes the person or nation that holds to it innocent no matter what they do or don't do. It's one of the best books I've read so far on American self understanding.

Well the thing is when you bow, the lower you bow the more you confim your "lowerness" to the guy you bow in front. It's a angle thing. An from the angle Obama is bowing, he's pretty much the emperor's bitch.

Now if the emperor was just some other guy on the basketball court, you would not make anything of it.

But let's remember the Emperor was the guy that kept the war going all this time, and the one who cast the deciding vote in the Diet in 1945 to capitulate. Translation: He could have ended the war anytime after 1944.

I'm not stupid: he's not the same emperor (he aint Hirohito). He's just the embodiment of the Empirial line. Which Obama bows to like a lackey.

In the same article, the is talk about OKinawa and how USA should leave. Thre were 50K casualties at okinawa. I encourage you to read obut this bloodbath, because it shows how events would have developed if the allieds had to invade Japan.

It was the reason why Truman(D) dropped the bomb.

So, Obama bows deeply to the legacy of the Imperal Japanese Empire and there is talk of giving up Okinawan soil? How about an apology for winnig WW2?

That has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. You're saying that Obama bowed to the emperor as a sign of prostration due to a lineage to Imperialist Japan and WWII and as an "apology" for being the victors in WWII.

This doesn't even take into account General Douglas MacArthur's efforts to retain Hirohito as the Emperor of Japan after WWII including protecting him from criminal charges and a trial. This was done because MacArthur felt that retaining him as emperor would have been better for the people of Japan during its transition from a belligerent nation.

So other than MacArthur there were many that have interacted with the emperors of Japan. This includes Ronald Reagan seen here making a toast to the former Emperor Hirohito. Of course this was in the 1980s when all of the paranoids thought that the "Japanese were going to take of the USA."

In Japanese culture the bow is a significant piece of communication.

When greeting another person, each person is generally well aware of their comparative status. The higher status person bows just a fraction less than the lower status person.

100 million Japanese will interpret our President's bow in one of two ways -

Either he granted their Emperor substantially higher status, or he cared so little about their culture that he couldn't be bothered with learning a proper greeting.

400 DanIrving  Sun, Nov 15, 2009 7:37:06am

"President's lack of training in Japanese customs is hardly "disgusting" and not a sign of "apologizing"."

Why does any American have to be taught you don't bow? The Emperor of Japan never bows. Is our PoTUS less important than the Emperor of Japan? Now I wouldn't go so far as to say it's 'disgusting'. That's pure hyperbole. But to dismiss it as insignificant is just as ludicrous. It, along with many other many other gaffs, point to a significant lack of experience in this Administration. Of course historically we've always elected Democrats to fix domestic affairs and not because they are foreign policy wonks. (see Obama, Clinton, Wilson, etc) I think this time though we've chosen the wrong Democrat. He can't even get the domestic front fixed.

The same with Bush Jr holding hands with King Abdullah at Camp David. It's one thing to honor another countries customs while in that country. But he was in our country and men don't normally hold hands unless they are in a special relationship. Now Bush may have had that kind of relationship with King A. Not my place to judge.

Um, what a bizarre collection. I'll address the "Okinawan soil" thing though. Surely "dak" isn't trying to argue that we should keep the US Marines as an occupying force on Okinawa indefinitely?

Frankly, having them there may or may not serve as a deterrent to North Korea, but if the Japanese want our Marines gone I assume that they have thought pretty deeply about their North Korea problem. We defeated Japan in WWII, but I was unaware until reading "dak's" comment that we had permanently colonized it as well.

Weren't we all making fun of Jack Murtha's call to "redeploy" our Marines from Iraq to Okinawa just a couple of years ago? If they're gonna redeploy anywhere, they need to redeploy home, which is the USA.

I notice that the Japanese press is rubbing a little interference (or just not caring) about this. The picture that Kyodo news is running is his appropriate and reciprocated bow to the empress:

[Link: home.kyodo.co.jp...]

The problem is not that the bow is inappropriate from the wingnut perspective, the problem may be that it is awkward and weird from the Japanese perspective. Japan relies on America being strong and this is not the way a leader in Japan should behave. A slight bow with the handshake or a 45 degree bow with his hands by his side would have done the trick.

Its not that big a deal but he should have learned this on the plane over.

Now on to the real problems.

My father fought on Saipan. He was so angered by the bow of an American President to an Emperor of a the country he fought against, he stopped speaking and went to bed.

When The President goes overseas he represents America. The argument that this is just a tradition does not square with me. We do not grovel at the feet of our betters as those in totalitarian regimes do, as is their "tradition"! We are the US! I fought in two wars to free others from "deference" to others that was unwarranted. This is a spit in the eye to those of us who believe that all are equal and saw our brothers die to prove it!
