Well, you saw the dark thoughts from the previous thread. Sometimes I feel like a character in a 19th century Russian novel. not a main character, you understand, just somebody or other's cousin, in a novel by one of the second-tier authors.

Not sure who advised Obama about Japan. Just saw his bow and frankly it is a cringer. Clumsy, frankly and gratuitous. I saw the empress once in a reception line and everyone else, foreign and Japanese, gave her a polite straight bow which she returned with a nod and wave.

This is absolutely completely the wrong kind of bow. The humped back is slavish.

While not even being an culturally accurate, his arc shows deference of status and even apology.

It is the kind of bow the CEO of a toy company makes when it turns out the paint had some mild lead content or a food ingredient was mislabeled.

54 MandyManners  Sun, Nov 15, 2009 4:32:11am

Colombia captured four members of the Venezuelan National Guard on Colombian soil and said on Saturday it would send them home in a gesture aimed at lowering diplomatic tensions between the neighboring countries.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez last week ordered his army to prepare for war, warning that a new U.S.-Colombia military cooperation agreement could set the stage for an invasion of Venezuela. Bogota and Washington dismiss the claim, saying their pact is limited to fighting drug-runners and rebels in Colombia.

SNIP

The Colombian government issued a statement calling for the release of an officer of its DAS intelligence service being held in Venezuela. Chavez has also accused Colombia of spying.

"By sending the four Venezuelans back, Uribe is trying to mark a contrast between himself and Chavez, who looks belligerent by comparison," said Mauricio Romero, political science professor at Bogota's Javeriana University.

Tracing Sarah Palin’s socialist roots:

It’s no secret that as governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin practiced real (as opposed to rhetorical) socialism. While accusing Barack Obama of running to be “redistributionist in chief” during last year’s campaign, John McCain conveniently overlooked the fact his running mate was the most redistributionist governor in the nation.

Noticed in the comments that the Palinistas are objecting to the claim that Palin practiced Socialism.

However, none of them will own up to where she got the money to give to the people of Alaska: taxing the oil companies.

Taxes are bad to "conservatives", unless it is Sarah Palin who collects them.

Which, btw, we pay here in California as some the oil exported from Alaska comes down here.

Well, could be...but in fact a number of communities with empty or near empty prisons have been lobbying to house Gitmo detainees (for the jobs).

Thomson is not the only U.S. town that had hoped to lure Guantanamo detainees. Officials in Marion, Ill., Hardin, Mont., and Florence, Colo., also have said they would welcome the jobs that would be generated.

I remember reading about the Montana one, but they were out of the running now for some reason. The state legislature over-rode what the locals wanted, maybe?

This is part and parcel of the Craig firing. Craig was responsible for closing Gitmo - and utterly failed. The original plan was to get other countries to take the bulk of the detainees off our hands, but nobody wanted to play that game. As Merkel queried: "If they're not a risk, why don't you house them?" Back home, the NIMBY mindset kicked in, so instead of a handful of undesirables being scattered widely, one at a time, across the Federal detention system, it looks like we're going to wind up with hundreds of them all jammed into one place by Federal decree - a decision, by the way, that's normally made by the prison system itself, instead of the sentencing authorities.

0bama made closing Gitmo a major campaign promise, and reiterated that he would close it "within a year" of his inauguration several times after taking office. It looks as though he'll ignore the objections, difficulties and unpleasant legal entanglements those working for him were trying to unravel and jam through a "solution" in order to meet his deadline.

And then deal with the fallout of that decision on an ad hoc basis.

Next up: blaming the last Administration for this one's shortcomings. Film at eleven.

This is a dog that won't hunt. The people own the lands and minerals which have been leased on terms to the oil companies, and government royalties and taxes are entirely appropriate, especially when the oil companies benefit from the resulting enhancements to the local infrasutructre and labour market. There's not much I admire about Palin, but in this case "Good for Alaska and Good on Palin".

Nope. The Secretary of Defense said back in September meeting the deadline would be tough. Gibbs covered the admin's ass in a press conference on 28th Sept as well:

Sept 28th

Q So is the White House resigned now -- resigned to the fact now that that deadline cannot be met?
MR. GIBBS: Well, we're not focused on whether or not the deadline will or won't be met on a particular day; we're focused on ensuring that the facility is closed and doing all that has to be done between now and the 22nd of January to make the most progress that we can that's possible.

They'd been backtracking on the year deadline since virtually the Inauguration.

According to the article, the space would be leased to the Defense Department, and the detainees would remain under military control. No different from the current situation, except for the location.

Which begs the question of why the expensive transfer is being considered in the first place.

The problem with Gitmo, after all, isn't the detention itself; it's the indeterminate status of the detainees. If they're going to receive some sort of trial or hearing, whether military or civilian, those proceeding can go forward just as well whether the accused are detained at Gitmo or anywhere else. And it's the latter that's been the problem all along - arriving at a determination of their status and what to do from there.

It sounds as though the Administration is no further along in making that determination than it has ever been, and detainee status will remain in limbo, with the added amusement of moving them around like a pea in a shell game.

In fact, I bet they "lose" a significant fraction during the move, and begin playing up the lower "revised" number whenever the topic comes up.

Exactly. Closing the physical facility is a symbolic gesture; the real issue is their status. It does seem that progress is being made towards resolving that status, but it's unsatisfactory for various reasons: criminal trials for some, military commissions for others, -- and AFAIK there is still a proposal that would allow Obama to extend a prison sentence indefinitely beyond what is imposed, effectively giving him the ability to hold anyone indefinitely, without conviction or even after having served the sentence.

Instead of 'Oh- isn't it wonderful that horrible place [Gitmo] is in the process of being shut down' or some other touchy-feely liberal platitude, her first question was 'Isn't that going to be a big security risk?'

When you have PBS-pledge-drive-bag totin' New England libs questioning the wisdom of your decision making after you could do no wrong 12 months ago, you gotta figure you done fucked up somewheres along the way...

Not that I put much stock in Internet polling, but I've run across a half-dozen so far asking whether this sounds like a good idea. All of them are running about two-to-one against it, a wide margin and one that's consistent across several polls, so it's probably a decent reflection of true feelings.

I'm still waiting to hear how the government intends to proceed with it's case, with all statements every made by KSM during his detainment excluded. They either have one hell of a case based on external evidence, or they've got nothing, and either don't care or haven't thought far enough ahead about losing and what that will mean.

I sense a huge clusterfuck ahead.

An estimated 3000 jobs would be created in Durbin's district if the Gitmo detainees were transferred to that prison. Wonder how much some of the 0bama admin's lawyer buddies could make representing the detainees or third patries relative to any ancillary issues that would stem from them arriving in the USA

This is a dog that won't hunt.

I don't expect it to.

It is nevertheless just another example of the relativity of "conservatism" as practiced.

Consistent libertarians eschew public ownership of pretty much anything.

Many old time conservatives would rail against the government owning too much of American soil (especially in the west, including Alaska.)

Today, however, collective ownership of resources is ok as long as it benefits The Sarah.

re: #79 iceweasel

Now there's a great proposal. Hopefully Congress will be careful not to extend the proposed powers to Obama's political enemies or to folks who reside under the Obama bus.

I did. I'm not sure what to make of his past associations and cases. But if any of the detainees are tried and released thanks to their transfer to civilian courts, that together with those past associations begins to suggest a pattern, and all it takes is for that suggestion to take root to make Watergate look like a parking infraction.

The Guardian has an exclusive interview today with the boyfriend of Neda, the Iranian woman murdered during the protests. He's been in prison and is now in hiding elsewhere. It's heartbreaking:

His friends begged him to leave the country, but Caspian refused. "I did not want to do this. I was not able to. I could not leave Neda's home. I could not be far away from this movement. I was past caring." On 26 June, six days after her death, the police surrounded his house with snipers on nearby rooftops. "I was at home when they rang the doorbell. They took the whole archive of my work, my editing tools, my documents, all the 10,000 photos I had collected to publish one day. Most of this work is of historical sites in Iran and nature photography.

"They told me they were taking me to Evin prison. They took me to a prison cell. Neda's grave number was 32. The grave next to that was number 34, my cell's number. I didn't want to come back after they took me. I wanted them to kill me as well."

My response: who gives a shit? Palin's political career is washed up, aside from her ability to randomly back someone who manages to win anyway and claim some sort of victory through sheer luck. Her current spike of press coverage is directly related to her book release, and like all decent publishers hers is getting as much "controversy," real or imagined, out there ahead of release in order to spike sales of a product with a lifespan of about a week - maybe less.

What's odd is the left's reactions to all this, which has been to rise to the bait and create even more publicity, in a game where there really isn't such a thing as "bad" publicity. And the left is also rapidly going back to their old habit of creating and attacking a caricature, rather than the actual person or her policies (or lack of them, as the case may be) which almost inevitably backfires when the facade falls apart. Old habits are hard to break, I guess.

I'm aware that some on the left are actively promoting Palin's candidacy, on the assumption that she's easily beatable. This is a dangerous game in many ways. It could well wind up lending competing candidates more chops when she crashes and burns in the primaries. Or, should she gain the nomination, there's the unpleasant possibility that she might actually win. The current Administration has nothing but rough road ahead, and may well suffer in approval as a result. And it is never, ever wise to underestimate the power of a populist candidate.

In terms of policies, ideas and abilities, Palin simply isn't worth paying attention to, and the best course - for both parties, and the nation as a whole - is to start ignoring her as forcefully as possible, and let her sop up all the rage and histrionics the Birchers, Ronulans and skinheads have to offer.

Well just one small example. When you make a cuban, it goes into a press (hot on top and bottom) Idiot put in a cuban which came apart, therefore not toasting the bun, but burning the meat and cheese. I pulled it out and the owner started yelling at me. They guy guilty of this offense stood right next to me and didn't fess up that he did it. If I fuck up, I admit it. I have always been that way. That's pretty much been my advice to him. Michael Symon just opened a restaurant in Detroit, and although that's certainly out of his league at the moment I told him it would be something to aspire to.

Like a lot of beginners, he wants to open his own restaurant, which is also a worthy goal. But I think he ought to do it on someone else's dime at first, and learn all the ins and outs - and all the mistakes it's possible to make - while someone else is paying for it.

re: #125 HoosierHoops

Here is a shortbread receipie (sp) which is good for shipping to the troops:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

In a seprate bowl whisk the flour with the salt. Set aside
In the bowl of your electric mixer, cream the butter until smooth (about 1 minute). Add the sugar and beat until smooth (about 2 minutes). Beat in the vanilla extract. Gently stir in the flour mixture just until incorporated. Flatten the dough into a disk shape, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill the dough for at least an hour.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. with the rack in the middle of the oven. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

On a lightly floured surface roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into rounds or whatever shapes you wish using lightly floured cookie cutter. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet and place in the refrigerator ofor about 15 minutes. This will firm up the dough so the cookies will maintain their shape when baked. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until cookies are lightly brown. Cool on rack.

Shortbread will keep in an airtight container for about a week or frozen for several months.

Makes about 20 shortbread cookies.

I don't expect it to be a runaway for either team, it will likely be a whoever has the ball last wins type of game. Already have the brisket and ribs cooking, chili will go on in a bit.

I was in a training class in Maine when Brady made his first start against the Colts...I was bragging about how bad the Pat's were going lose..

Pork loin is a great bargain too. For smaller portions you can take the loin to the butcher's counter and ask them to cut it into 2 inch thick chops (no charge). At home you can individually vacuum seal them in bags and put them in the freezer.

Blogging moms wooed by food firms

Reporting from Los Angeles and Fort Wayne, Ind. - On most days, Andrea Deckard can be found in her home office, digging through stacks of coupons and grocery receipts for money saving tips and recipes that she can share with readers of her Mommy Snacks blog.

That is, when the stay-at-home mom isn't being wined and dined by giant food companies.

Earlier this year, Frito-Lay flew her to Los Angeles to meet celebrities such as model Brooke Burke and the Spice Girls' Mel B, while pitching her on its latest snack ad campaign.

After trimming the fat, I'd throw it into the bottom of whatever you are cooking them in and discard it after cooking. Fat adds flavor.

It's a great cooking style, especially for cuts of meat that are...well, cheap. And tough. That long stint at low temperature transforms them and melts away their chewy qualities.

I normally use a Dutch oven in the regular oven or on the stovetop to do the same thing, but either way, braising is a good cooking skill to master.

On a different note, I just unearthed a three-pound bag of smoked, pulled pork shoulder in the freezer, ready to be thawed and turned into lunches for the next week.

This batch I soaked in a Carolina-style red sauce - vinegar, ketchup, a little cayenne - that adds just enough heat, with some tartness to cut through the porkiness. Sloppy as hell, but oh so good.

Thanks, but I found what I was looking for in Charcuterie, an outstanding book on curing, brining and pickling meat, and a few other items as well. I've done lots of brines, but a lot of them seem ad hoc, and I was looking for one with a reasonable explanation of why the proportions of salt to sugar to water were chosen, which this book provides.

Mildly labor intensive, but it's mainly a task that involves waiting for things to happen. Soak the bird for 24 hours; let it rest in the 'fridge afterward for another 24 hours; roast. Total actual labor - maybe a half-hour to prepare the brine solution and set everything up, and another 20 minutes when done to toss off some gravy.

And a day and a half of non-stop frenzy pulling together everything else that'll be served along with it.

I hear there's an LGF cookbook. You should put your recipe up there, although I'm not sure where it is.

Since the BBQ nuts are here this morning: Big Green Egg is worth the money. I have mine out on my covered porch and I BBQ all year round. It's very rare for me to cook meat indoors.

Hard to part with that much dough, even though I also barbecue and grill year 'round, happily shoveling a grill-sized patch in the snow just outside the garage. And they're fussy about charcoal as well; natural charcoal isn't easy to come by around here. So for now, I'm sticking with my gas, charcoal and smoker Webers, and merely aspiring to a BGE.

There's an annual show-off, er, cook-off, for BGEs in the area every year. Maybe I'll attend next year's.

Not meaning to pimp for my company, but FYI...

Sears (who supports this blog with advertising dollars) is having a HUGE sale tonight for Friends and Family, from 6-9 at the stores (after closing hours) and is also running the sale online all day.

Print this and take it to the store or use it online...

Cracked peppercorn encrusted pork tenderloin is also on my Thanksgiving table, right next to The Bird. I have a son who does not like turkey, and I started roasting the pork for him... but then the rest of the family tasted it, so I have to make sure I have enough tenderloins to go around. Also means I don't have to do a 20 lb turkey anymore - I can get away with a 14-16 pounder.

It's really a great book. If you've never made your own bacon, you're not really a capitalist, in my opinion.

One of the authors (Polcyn) teaches at a college just down the road from me, and charcuterie is his particular specialty. When he teaches it, he walks in the first day of class with a dead hog on a cart - not a cleaned one, either, just dead - and the students are expected to clean it, butcher it and transform all of it's parts into something edible. Pretty much nothing goes to waste, including some internal organs that you wouldn't normally think of as food, at least not when you have to deal with them raw.

Hard core.

The book, however, is more approachable for the average home chef.

When the wife and I were in our salad years, we used to buy frozen turkeys all the time - especially right after Thanksgiving, when they were practically giving them away. It's easy for two people to eat for over a week off a small bird, especially if you make soup out of the carcass - which is how I'll be spending my Friday after Thanksgiving, because there's nothing better than home made turkey soup, and I can freeze it and enjoy it for months.

I really ought to buy a freezer one of these days. There are farms not all that far from here that sell grass-fed beef, but you have to buy half a damn cow thanks to Federal butchering requirements, so you either need a place to store it, friends to share it with or a really damn big grill and barbecue pit.

re: #251 Killgore Trout

Bacon is going to be my first experiment.

It is absolutely dirt simple.

Note that if you make a habit of it, you'll really want to buy a meat slicer. Slicing a pound by hand isn't too bad, but it's not something I'd want to do on a regular basis.

The nice thing, though, is that you've got a slab of solid bacon, so if you're into lardons or other cooking methods that need chunks of bacon rather than slices, you're golden. Around here, it's hard to find anything but pre-sliced bacon, although there's a Polish butcher shop that makes their own heavily smoked variety that'll sell you a hunk.

We've gotten a lot better about getting increased mileage out of our food. It's been a long, long times since we've stocked prepared foods for lunch, because there's always some sort of leftovers available. One problem is the relatively low volume of food we go through, although I started chucking chicken parts (spines, giblets and so forth) into a large Ziploc bag that lives in the freezer, and turning them into soup when enough has accumulated.

It's a whole different story now than when we were younger. It's not about the cost, but the quality, which is so much better than anything you can buy ready-made. And I know what's in it, too.

I also have a Strategic Grease Reserve in the 'fridge. It's impossible to beat the flavor of bacon grease.

I keep shrimp shells for my White Seafood Chowder. Simmer the shells in the base and strain really good so you don't get little shrimp legs in the base. I also keep a hunk of beef fat to season the grill so nothing sticks. And when I say hunk, I mean hunk.

Yeah, I thought about that. My knife technique isn't that good, I might really make a mess of it.

For your first time, I wouldn't worry about it, unless you really want to buy a slicer for other reasons. You'll wind up with slices that aren't all the same thickness, so you'll have to hover over the pan and pull them singly as they're done. Slicers are expensive, though, and I haven't been able to justify the cost, although it'd be sweet to be able to produce your own paper-thin ham and roast beef slices from leftover roasts.

I agree... my MIL had previously been the turkey-roaster. She used the brown paper bag method, which I have always disliked. Don't know if it was her lack of cooking skills or the method, but it was ALWAYS dry. So one year I played around with the brining thing. After a few tries with various ingredients, I announced I would be doing the turkey for Thanksgiving. Three years later, I'm STILL doing the turkey (and sausage stuffing, garlic mashed potatoes and pan gravy, cranberry butter...)

Trust me, I'm not complaining - I love doing it. It will just be a little strange this time, since this will be the family's first holiday season after my husband passed away (in March).

Stuffing in the bird is bad. It gets bacteria in the stuffing, first of all, and second- it increases the cook time for the turkey. Never put stuffing in the bird!

Stuffing in a bird does bring bacteria and takes away the internal cooking that you get with an empty cavity.

I'm not a big stuffing fan, but Thanksgiving is the one day of the year I can really go for some. For me, though, turkey isn't meant for stuffing- it's meant for cranberry relish. My grandmother would make it every year, and now that tradition is mine. Everyone who has my Gran's cran relish loves it- even folks who think they don't like cranberries!

But really- the recipe can be found on the back of most bags of whole cranberries. Chop them in a blender or food processor, add some orange (or apple), add some sugar, mix and it's done. Not much easier than that.

yeah (even I have to do a conversion to inches to get the idea..it's approx 7 and 1/2 inches.)

Google works great for that. I typed in 200 millimeters and it "auto"ed how many inches is 200 millimeters...

ho, ho, ho...they're great to roast -- however, one caveat -- wathc out for all the grease -- incedible quanitites of grease (splatters the oven walls, come people prior to cooking a roast goose put a paste of baking soda onto the oven walls, makes clean-up easier...although never trided it...have done the roasted goose thing though.)

Anybody here every done a roast goose? They have some frozen at the store, and I'm guessing they'll go on sale after the holiday, so I might try one, but I have no idea what to expect.

Back in my meat eating days my family always had one on holidays. They are very good, but like ducks they are fatty... so cook it as you would a duck & you will not regret it at all.

Cool... my cranberry butter is the same level of easy - canned whole cranberry sauce plus room temperature butter in a food processor. Done.

So, do you now carve the head of lettuce at Thanksgiving?

re: #310 Sharmuta

I'll think about it. I've already sent a couple recipes in, and wanted other lizards to get space too.

But really- the recipe can be found on the back of most bags of whole cranberries. Chop them in a blender or food processor, add some orange (or apple), add some sugar, mix and it's done. Not much easier than that.

Yeah, that's the ticket. I made something similar the last couple of years - although I didn't chop them, just let them burst while heating - and it was totally pucker-worthy, way better than that stuff you get in a can.

I should point out, though, that holiday meals are all about tradition, and for one of my sons it just isn't Thanksgiving without that cylinder of transparent red Jello-like cranberry "sauce" quivering on a plate, complete with can ridges.

Cranberry mayo is good for leftover turkey samiches.

Upding for quoting classic Cosby. My dad had all his earlier records. My brother and I would sit on the floor and crack up while listening to them. Good times.

The funny thing is, I loved the canned stuff too! But for a big holiday meal, we go with the good stuff. Canned berries are for the leftovers.

How do we know that the attack at Fort Hood was an act of Islamist terrorism? Simple, Major Nidal Hassan told us so. ... Hassan is the first terrorist in history to give an academic lecture explaining why he was about to attack.

... It was reported that the audience was shocked and frightened by his lecture. He was supposed to speak on some medical topic yet instead talked on the topic: “The Koranic World View as it Relates to Muslims in the U.S. Military.” All you have to do is look at the 50 Power Point slides and they tell you everything you need to know.

... It is quite a good talk. He’s logical and presents his evidence. This is clearly not the work of a mad man or a fool... - Barry Rubin

The implication of Barry Rubin's article on Fort Hood: other devout Islamist's are likely to draw the same conclusion from The Koran as did Major Hassan. The call for British soldiers to abandon the military may be evidence

(my intent of posting this sticky problem was to bring the article to Charles attention)

Thanks. That gives me a good idea of what to expect.

Glad that our modern fat-avoidance frenzy has passed over at least one animal. They're breeding low-fat pigs now, a sin against nature if there ever was one.
