Charles, just riffing off the main stamp visible on that crate, did you know that the "made in" labeling laws were introduced to keep out the competition?

Back in the day when, say, German steel started to compete with English, the Brits imposed a law saying all foreign products had to be clearly stamped as such.

Didn't work out quite the way the Brits intended, though. The Germans worked hard and made "Made in Germany" a boast.

Let him who has ears, hear.

The box itself? They wouldn't ship antiques in an old wooden box. They'd get a new box. Wooden crates now are made with more precision than this box appears to have been made. The spacing of the nails on modern wooden crates is equal and standardized. This box isn't.

You'd think. For some reason, doing it in urban or blue-state areas is considered subversive and self-indulgent by many.

I recall reading an interview with some people living in a rural area outside the Katrina devastation zone. It was clear that getting supplies was going to be difficult for a while. The lady of the house commented that at least the house was still standing. She had a lot of canned stuff, and things from the garden, and she'd send the boys out hunting--they could do without groceries for a while.

That's a good place to be in.

And they don't spare the ugliness, either. Real footage of of dead, and it's a real gut check. No matter how bad the enemy is, I it still pains me to see men slaughtered like that. Deeds of war may be great and valorous, as were the Marines on Guadalcanal, but they remain terrible.

Book recommendation: With The Old Breed, by a Marine who fought in some of the most terrible battles of the Pacific war. The archival film reels apparently don't show the half of it.

While I was removing a bayonet and scabbard from a dead Japanese, I
noticed a Marine near me. He wasn't in our mortar section but had
happened by and wanted to get in on the spoils. He came up to me
dragging what I assumed to be a corpse. But the Japanese wasn't
dead.
He had been wounded severely in the back and couldn't move his arms;
otherwise he would have resisted to his last breath.

Such was the incredible cruelty that decent men could commit when
reduced to a brutish existence in their fight for survival amid the
violent death, terror, tension, fatigue, and filth that was the
infantryman's war. ... The fierce struggle for survival in the abyss
of Peleliu eroded the veneer of civilization and made savages of us
all. We existed in an environment totally incomprehensible to men
behind the lines--service troops and civilians.

TV ad that aired a few years ago:

Very overweight guy begins to dance to a popular song. On the wall behind him are the call letters of a local radio station. The guy is talented, but so large that he is gross. It's a trainwreck - you know it's gonna be horrible, but you can't stop watching.

The song ends and the tagline appears:

TUNE IN NOW OR HE WILL DANCE AGAIN

I've seen the same idea as an ad for a radio station. In that case the kicker was "Tune in now, or next time...he's naked!"

I gave the beer traps a try again this year because the slugs have been so bad. What really pissed me off is watching slugs show up, drink their fill and then just wandering away. From my observations I'd guess that only 30-40% actaull fall in the trap and die. The rest are just getting a nice snack. There is a danger with the milk jugs; sometimes you actually trap a slug in with you seedlings. They'll clean out on area but at least they're contained and can't do more damage.

Can you get Metaldehyde? It's a granule, think big grains of sand. Lasts through getting wet & won't mildew, like the sawdusty kinds of slug/snail control. I use a product called "That's it!" and have used it for years.
It's not good to get it into the plant, it prevents production of chlorophyll, but if you sprinkled it around your plants, before putting on the plastic jugs, I would think it'd be a good solution. It's also available to commercial farmers, with a license, as a liquid.

In an audacious raid Friday, al-Qaeda terrorists managed to slip past White House security and seize President Obama's teleprompter. Their demands were released in a grainy video, which apparently showed the president's teleprompter, bound and blindfolded but unharmed, while heavily armed masked men stood behind it, quoting from the Qur'an. The content of their demands is not being released.

President Obama, visibly shaken, attempted to address the White House press corps on his own. "Words, uh, um, I, uh, heh-heh, well..."

Looks like Obama's trip to Asia isn't all lollipops & unicorns.

WSJ: Concerns Rise Around Obama's First Swing Through Asia

SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--President Barack Obama headed to Shanghai on Sunday to press China on issues from climate change to economic restructuring, amid rising concerns that his first swing through Asia will yield more disappointment than progress on trade, human rights, national security and environmental concerns.

A flurry of actions here this weekend raised more questions than they resolved on a broad sweep of issues confronting both sides of the Pacific. On Sunday, leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum dropped efforts to reach a binding international climate change agreement in Copenhagen next month, settling instead for what they called a political framework for future negotiations.

Obama became the first president to meet with the entire Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including the military junta of Myanmar, and White House officials say he personally demanded the country's leaders release political prisoners, including opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. But Obama failed to secure any mention of political prisoners in an ASEAN communique.

The U.S. and Russia now appear unlikely to complete a nuclear arms reduction accord by Dec. 5, when the current Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty expires. Obama met for closed-door consultations with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, but National Security Council Russia specialist Michael McFaul said major issues remain, and the two countries are working out a "bridging agreement" to extend previous arms-ratification rules.

On trade, the U.S. president committed this weekend to re-engage the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a fledgling free trade alliance in the region. But a presidential shift in tone toward more trade engagement will face its real test Thursday when Obama visits South Korea to discuss a free trade agreement with that country that remains stuck.

And on Iran, Obama and Medvedev were left to warn leaders of the Islamic republic once again that "time is running out." Iran has yet to agree to a Russian offer to provide nuclear material for research in exchange for the closure of a nuclear reactor that Western powers say could be used to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons.

Halfway through his Asian tour, Obama is confronting the limits of engagement and personal charm.

North City Democrats Select Replacement For MO Rep. El-Amin

NORTH ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - After Missouri State Representative Talibdin (T.D.) El-Amin pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges, Democratic Committee Members in north St. Louis selected his replacement Saturday. Pending approval from the Governor, attorney Hope Whitehead, will serve the rest of T.D. El-Amin's term. El-Amin awaits sentencing next month. He faces up to two years in prison.

El-Amin admitted to pressuring a small business for cash bribes. He had been serving his second term as the Democrat Missouri Representative of the 57th District.

Hope Whitehead, his replacement, had to pay her taxes to qualify to be his replacement.

ST. LOUIS — A day before she clinched the nomination to fill a vacancy in the Missouri House of Representatives on Saturday, St. Louis Democrat Hope Whitehead paid a visit to City Hall.

Not to mobilize supporters, but to pay hundreds of dollars in outstanding taxes.

Her trip downtown was more than just civic duty. Under state law, candidates with overdue tax bills are ineligible for the ballot.

When her obligations were met, a panel of city Democratic leaders gathered Saturday to nominate Whitehead, 50, to fill the vacancy created by former state Rep. Talibdin El-Amin, who submitted his resignation in September after pleading guilty to federal bribery charges.

El-Amin is the third local Democratic lawmaker to leave office this year after getting caught in an FBI crackdown on corruption.

Did you have a rough day? If you don't want to read this site there's an address bar at the top of your browser that will take you to sites filled with kittens or mickey mouse or praise for Obama.

And as far as this site goes, its been pretty even handed re: Obama and politics in general for the time I've been reading. If you think people are being too harsh, call them out specifically and give reasons why.

Strolling into an open thread and making sweeping, sarcastic generalizations doesn't make for great debate.

And there are some definite critics of Obama on this site, but on the whole he gets pretty fair treatment around here. Certainly fair enough not to merit a comment like that.

OT: ABC News is reporting that at least one Japanese newspaper is refusing to print the picture of Obama bowing to Emperor Akhito, out of embarrassment for both him and Akhito.

"Kyodo News is running his appropriate and reciprocated nod and shake with the Empress, certainly to show the president as dignified, and not in the form of a first year English teacher trying to impress with Karate Kid-level knowledge of Japanese customs.

"The bow as he performed did not just display weakness in Red State terms, but evoked weakness in Japanese terms...The last thing the Japanese want or need is a weak looking American president and, again, in all ways, he unintentionally played that part.

Traditional 'headless goat polo' planned for Karzai inauguration

KABUL, November 14 (RIA Novosti) - A traditional Buzkashi sport competition in Afghanistan's capital is scheduled next week in honor of President Hamid Karzai's inauguration, the national sport federation's head, Hadji Rashid ,said on Saturday.

The competition, which will be held November 19-21, consists of players on horseback who try to hold on to a headless goat as long as possible while riding full gallop to gain sympathy from the viewers. Other players attempt to tear the goat carcass from its "owner" using practically any means. The carcass is sometimes thrown over a goal line, or slam-dunked into a vat.

Hamid Karzai was declared the winner of Afghanistan's presidential elections on November 7, when his only challenger, Abdullah Abdullah, dropped out of the second round due to the president's refusal to dismiss the nation's top election official and take other action to prevent fraud.

The Buzkashi competition is typically fierce, as other players may use any force short of tripping the horse in order to thwart scoring attempts. Riders usually wear heavy clothing and head protection to protect themselves against other players' whips and boots. Games can last for several days, and the winning team receives a prize, not necessarily money, as a reward for their win.

Bacteria turn carbon dixoide into fuel

US researchers have genetically modified bacteria to eat carbon dioxide and produce isobutyraldehyde - a precursor to several useful chemicals, including isobutanol, which has great potential as a fuel alternative to petrol.

The modified bacteria are highly efficient and powered by sunlight, so a future goal is to set up colonies near to industrial plants. This would allow greenhouse gases to be recycled into useful chemical feedstock - supplying several hydrocarbons that are typically obtained from petroleum.

It's about trustworthiness. If you had negotiate a debt or file bankruptcy, it is taken as a sign that you have poor judgment. In some cases, its also about trustworthiness. One thing I've learned is that fire departments won't accept applicants with bad credit, because such people might steal valuables from a house they helped save to pay off their debts.

Agreed. Negotiating a debt hurts a little, non-payment hurts far more. I always remind people of that when they say they simply won't pay their phone bill. I warn them about how an unpaid debt can do to them and how it does not go away unless dealt with. I've actually settled some customers down that way, by explaining that they can't just walk while speaking as someone on their side.

18 months ago I had a Platinum AMEX and a Platinum Chase CC. Not no more. But I keep in touch with them. The AMEX people are very cool with it.

I'm hiding from some of my credit card people right now. They do not seem to grasp that I actually can't give them ANYTHING without giving up something else, such as dinner.

I'm paying off one card, and when it's done, I'm going to contact the next one. It's very awkward. I feel like a flake, but I was supporting me and the husband all last year on a part-time salary, and things just crashed out of control.

The important thing, as George W. pointed out, is to be able to put food on your family. I am keeping up with that part.

Yeah--renting apartments, sure. I have property I rent out, and I certainly do a credit check. Lower scores makes me look harder at current income and rental references. But that's common practice and makes sense if you are going to enter into a contract with in individual who is promising to pay you. It's no different than entering into a car lease.

But for employment, I'm not sure it is as relevant unless you are charged with managing people's finances or maybe if you hold a position of trust as an officer of the company.

I suppose--but there are lots of reasons someone could have a poor credit score, including leave from work due to medical reasons. One would have to be given the opportunity to explain a poor credit score if that were part of the selection process. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to pull a credit report unless the individual expressly gives permission. Any employer that runs a credit check without obtaining permission could get in trouble. Assuming I was asked permission to have my credit report run, I would wonder about the commitment that future employer has to my privacy.

They don't just take into account a bad debt or a renegotiation. They judge you by late payments and late fees. Out of all of which the same judgmental agencies make trillions every year. Does the term "conflict of interest" mean nothing to you?

You, Falcon, whatever your hue, could find yourself unemployed tomorrow. And then you miss an American Express payment. And then one for your car. And your "rating" goes from gown to town. And down, and down, and down.

And then you find out about the perfect job opening for you. But the "human resources" twats turn you down because "Chrysler LLC" says you were late on a payment.

Tell me then about fairness.

I miss doing "Man" work.:(

If by "Man" work, you mean physical work--I've never been a fan. Give me geek work any time. I'm thoroughly opposed to physical effort :)

Hard work never killed anyone but why take the risk?

OMG, talk about a money making idea!
Still, you gotta get out of debt first.
I think...
Or maybe the book, would do it?

No. Too much time involved in printing.
LOL!

You'll get through it. My parents went through the same thing 10 years ago, and they came out the other side. They were fortunate enough to have had their home for so long, that once the bleeding ended, they paid the credit cards with a home equity loan. That may or may not be an option for you--I wouldn't recommend it until you are stabilized again anyway since it's better to default on a loan that isn't your home if you have to default on a loan.

No point in reading it, considering the source.

Consider something more reputable if you're interested in the content being taken seriously.

It's a video clip. It doesn't matter which website hosts it. I also never understood how people can dismiss Media Matters links because of their political allegiance, when practically all of their criticism consists in highlighting actual videos and transcripts.

Dear Sir,

My household has experienced some trying times, financially.
We are commited to honoring our debts to you, but may need some extensions. Is there anything you can do to help us out, in our difficult circumstances? It would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely.

SFZ, copy this & send it to everyone you owe money to.
If you get a 2% reduction from anyone, it's worth your time!
SERIOUSLY!
If you don't ask...
YOU WILL NOT GET IT!
The financial folks, have programs ( SCRUTINIZE before signing).
But there ARE legit debt reductions out there.
YOU HAVE TO ASK.
If they see you as legit, and wanting to pay.
There is a good chance, they will try to work with you.
But...
If you don't ask...

Cheers!
Good luck!

That was an extremely nice thing you did. You just gained my respect.
