The power supply is the thing that plugs into the wall that converts the wall power into something that the computer/monitor/etc can use.

Some of them are detachable. Baby monitors, for example, have detachable power supplies and can use a battery instead.

RIP, Edward Woodward

The British actor Edward Woodward, who started his career treading the boards in Shakespearean rep but went on to become an iconic television hard man, has died at the age of 79.

Woodward found fame in the late 1960s with the TV spy series Callan, in which he played a reluctant professional hitman.

His greatest commercial success came almost two decades later in the American series The Equalizer in which he played Robert McCall, a former secret service agent turned urban vigilante.

Woodward had the title role in another iconic movie, Breaker Morant. This was a fictionalized account of a real incident in the Boer War, in which the Anglo-Australian adventurer and poet Harry ("Breaker") Morant was court-martialed and executed for allegedly ordering the execution of enemy guerrillas. The episode remains controversial in Australia to this day and might be especially relevant in light of recent events.

I'm finally getting my lower teeth taken care of, a few pulled, and partials, in a month, I'll have a full smile again, after too many years of abusing them by smoke and drinks.

So, I was at the dentist today, pulled a tooth, left a root inside, and refers me to a dental surgeon, tell me it's going to cost more to get that root out.

I've been saving some of the poverty-level wages I make to get the partials taken care of, and I wasn't expecting to have to add the rates of a oral surgeon to all this.

So, my dentist (who is a really good doctor, over 70 years old, I trust docs that have been doing their thing for a long time) arranges with the surgeon to let the surgeon extract the other tooth I need extracted, and my doc will transfer the fee for the second tooth (which I already paid) to the surgeon, and I will only have to pay 40 dollars to have the surgeon dig the root out, sort of combining procedures all in one visit.

Thank goodness for my doc, he could have just done what he was going to do, make the money that I had arranged to pay him, and let me worry about any extra fees.

Thank goodness for little favors and old fashioned doctoring.

Okay, I broke down and watched Oprah Winfrey interview Sarah Palin.

Color me underwhelmed. By both women.

It was like watching two lightly muzzled Doberman Pinschers, behaving because they have to, but with an undergrowl that translates, roughly, into “if we’re ever alone together in the yard, you’re going down…”

Oprah needed Palin for the ratings; Palin needed Oprah to push the book,
Going Rogue; An American Life. Both endured hour of excruciating discomfort for the sake of their respective ends.

Some of the colonies' had charters that made them "theocratic" in some sense, but this country has been largely both non-sectarian and non-intrusive about religion (assuming one doesn't define that term too loosely.)

American cultural norms of the 18th and 19th centuries were influenced by a Christianized England, but I hesitate to say that accepting the culture of the day was a type of "theocracy".

Palin on Oprah

When Ms. Winfrey pressed Ms. Palin about why she would not mention the names of newspapers or magazines she read when Ms. Couric asked her to, Ms. Palin said she found the CBS anchor’s persistence “annoying.” Still looking annoyed, she recalled how she left a rally “pumped up” and aglow, only to pull back the curtain and discover Ms. Couric waiting with camera and crew, or as she put it sourly, “There’s the perky one again.”

Ms. Winfrey, who didn’t hide her surprise at Ms. Palin’s impolitic wording, came to Ms. Couric’s defense, noting, “You’re pretty perky too.”

[snip]

When Ms. Winfrey asked if she would invite Mr. Johnston to Thanksgiving, Ms. Palin gave one of her trademark wandering answers.

“You know, that’s a great question,” Ms Palin said. “And it’s lovely to think that he would ever even consider such a thing.”

She added: “He is a part of the family, and you want to bring him in the fold and kind of under your wing. And he needs that too, Oprah.”

There was more: “I think he needs to know that he is loved, and he has the most beautiful child, and this can all work out for good. It really can. We don’t have to keep going down this road of controversy and drama all the time. We’re not really into the drama. We don’t really like that.”

Finally Ms. Winfrey cut to the chase, asking, “Does that mean yes, he is coming, or no, he is not?” (Pressed, Ms. Palin said she would extend the invitation.)

I think Oprah can consider herself off the Palin's Christmas card list.

I know. I have some health and dental insurance now, my girlfriend was able to include me as a domestic partner for no extra charge to her family policy, but the dental part of her coverage is the bare basics, but of course it helps.

When I got the upper denture 2 years ago, all of that came out of my pocket, all 1700 dollars. This fee, with insurance helping was still 652 for the partials for my lower teeth.

And I prepaid the 652 over the last few months, and I was not prepared to shell out for any oral surgery.

My opinion. A good way to start the seperation process is to pay V E R Y close attention to local pols (school boards, city councilors, etc) and not worry too too much on the larger scene. I agree there are creationists who would be faithful public servants. However, at this point, I'm not sure how to distinguish one from the other and it's created this situation for me where I feel science education is too important to leave to chance and hoping that my elected officials will indeed keep their personal religious views out of biology books.

There are also cynical opportunists like Texas Governor Rick Perry, who could not possibly be so ignorant as to believe in young earth creationism, yet does everything possible to promote that belief on the Texas Board of Education.

I believe there are creationists out there who simply don't realize that their beliefs are not coherent with reality, ...

We like to think we are an advanced nation and society, yet we can make allowance for elected officials who cannot distinguish reality from dogma?

Sure we can point to an administrator here or there where such a mindset doesn't make a difference, but most likely the same administrator never faced a situation requiring innovative thinking.

Saying this is unimportant is like saying a comprehensive education is not important as long as one can do a few things adequately.

abortion, homosexuality, children out of wedlock etc.

Not sure how to map those to "theocratic".

Taking them in reverse order:

"Bastard" children in many different cultures faced difficulty, not just in America or Christendom.

Homosexuality - as far as I know, there were no executions (as required by the OT law as interpreted by many) in the US as penalty for homosexuality during the time period covered by your parents. Homosexuality was more shunned, to be sure, but again that was part of the cultural norm and isn't unique to American forms of organized religion.

Abortion - not sure also if this fits under theocracy if the culture of the time normally shuns such a procedure.

NFL Owner Fined $250,000 for flipping off fans

The NFL has fined Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams $250,000 for making an obscene gesture at Bills fans.

It happened Sunday in Nashville. After the Titans beat the Bills 41-17, Adams was seen "flipping off" fans from his luxury suite at the stadium.

Adams apologized later in the day for the display of his middle fingers.

"I do realize that those types of things shouldn't happen," Adams said in a statement. "I need to specifically apologize to the Bills, their fans, our fans and the NFL. I obviously have a great deal of respect for Ralph Wilson and the history we have shared. I also understand there will probably be league discipline for my actions and I will accept those." NFL commissioner Roger Goodell happened to be at the game Sunday and even had breakfast with Adams that morning.

Yikes! 250 grand? By that standard, I owe the Big 12 about a billion dollars.

Al Gore's Current TV Calls Sarah Palin a 'Gun-Ho' and a 'TWILF'

Speaking of guns and such, as an urban Canadian I am intrigued by the American militias. There was one on TV this morning, I think on CNN, which IIRC is in Minnesota. Almost all of the members were older, overweight, unfit men who were dressed in ill-fitting camoflage, carrying semi-automatic assault rifles, and making a point of telling the reporter how they dislike and distrust their leftist Pres. Obama.
As they purported to practice target acquisition, the ones interviewed claimed to be acting as a check on the authority of the government, which they did not have much use for at all.
The thing I have trouble with is how groups like this actually and sincerely believe that they act as guardians and protectors of individual liberties...when in fact they looked to me like a commercial for gun control.
The enterprise seemed to me a decent excuse for a bunch of middle aged guys to get out in the bush with their guns for a few hours - I actually thought it looked like fun. But a check and balance on the power of government?

Weird, that brick pattern exactly matches the one in our backyard patio. Brick patios age gracefully compared to most the alternatives and require about zero maintenance. After about 13 years, the only problem is some settling in areas, and that can be fixed pretty easy. Wood decks suck unless you like to power wash and stain wood for a hobby. And concrete slabs are so impersonal.
