Hoffman: ‘ACORN Stole the Election!’

Politics • Views: 5,294

Far right New York congressional candidate Doug Hoffman has posted a wacky, paranoid “unconcession” letter at his website; he accuses ACORN and “the unions” of “tampering with democracy,” and the file name of the web page is “stolenelection.html.” Wow. Stop Another Stolen Election!

(Hat tip: Dave Weigel, who points out that ACORN actually had no volunteers in Hoffman’s district.)

Well, you either blame someone else or admit your entire approach to politics is flawed from the get go. I wonder which option a politician or would be politician will opt for? A real brain twister this is.

Majority of Republicans think ACORN stole Obama the 2008 election

16 SanFranciscoZionist  Thu, Nov 19, 2009 10:45:03am

ACORN's amazing maleveolence reminds me of this:

Goodtimes will re-write your hard drive. Not only that, but
it will scramble any disks that are even close to your computer. It
will recalibrate your refrigerator's coolness setting so all your ice
cream goes melty. It will demagnetize the strips on all your credit
cards, screw up the tracking on your television and use subspace field
harmonics to scratch any CD's you try to play.

It will give your ex-girlfriend your new phone number. It
will mix Kool-aid into your fishtank. It will drink all your beer and
leave its socks out on the coffee table when there's company coming
over. It will put a dead kitten in the back pocket of your good suit
pants and hide your car keys when you are late for work.

Goodtimes will make you fall in love with a penguin. It will
give you nightmares about circus midgets. It will pour sugar in your
gas tank and shave off both your eyebrows while dating your
girlfriend behind your back and billing the dinner and hotel room to
your Discover card.

It will seduce your grandmother. It does not matter if she
is dead, such is the power of Goodtimes, it reaches out beyond the
grave to sully those things we hold most dear.

It moves your car randomly around parking lots so you can't
find it. It will kick your dog. It will leave libidinous messages on
your boss's voice mail in your voice! It is insidious and subtle. It
is dangerous and terrifying to behold. It is also a rather
interesting shade of mauve.

Goodtimes will give you Dutch Elm disease. It will leave the
toilet seat up. It will make a batch of Methanphedime in your bathtub
and then leave bacon cooking on the stove while it goes out to chase
gradeschoolers with your new snowblower.

He's also claiming that Pelosi was behind the stolen election...
Owens in Office Illegally?

Without a clear winner in the election and with considerably more outstanding absentee ballots than the spread between the candidates, the NY Board could not and did not certify the result of the election. The House, however, moved forward with the induction of its newest member regardless. They did so, presumably on the order of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who had declared on the previous day that "Tuesday night, we won two more votes for health care." with apparent disregard for the fact that the election is not over yet.

Unfortunately these paranoid conspiracies are becoming an integral part of the Republican platform.

You're comparing a post from "democrats.com" to a poll done by an established polling organization. Also, believing that several hundred votes were stolen is paranoid. Believing that several million were stolen is completely ridiculous.

I don't think it's a recent developement. Neither side trusts the other nowadays and it's sad. If a repub wins, it's because of voter suppression and rigged machines (ones run by repub contributor comapnies). Seems as though Doug Hoffman is going out of his way to prove that he is an unstable candidate given that there were no ACORN volunteers involved in this election. Even if there were these allegations would require an official complaint through official channels and not based on an accusatory blog rant as Mr. Hoffman has done.

He ends with the phrase "Obama Regime." This reminds me of the anti-Bush crazies of previous years that were always calling the Bush presidency a regime. This displays at least a common link with the Paulians.

Given this behavior and, which I assume will expand in the coming months, there is no doubt in my mind that Hoffman will be uncompetitive in the coming regular congressional election which takes place in less than a year. In the mean time, I hope that the people of the 23rd district in New York are informed of Mr. Hoffman eccentricities.

True, but you did note with regret that his paranoia was becoming a plank in the Republican party platform. I suggested you should wait until the man's in office before reading anything into it. Others pointed out the incongruity of suggesting that he was upholding a plank of a party to which he does not belong as a candidate, and which did not endorse him.

69 Jeff In Ohio  Thu, Nov 19, 2009 11:13:47am

re: #32 Ben Hur

It's not a conspiracy.

He WAS sworn in before the elections were certified by the NY Election Board.

It changes nothing, because nothing will happen over it.

"Article I, section 5 of the Constitution states that each House shall be the judge of its own elections, returns, and Member qualifications. Section 4 permits Congress to make laws to alter state regulations concerning elections. As a result, the House or Senate have final authority to decide a contested election, superseding even a state legislature or court. Court cases have held that House decisions of contested elections cannot be brought to the courts on appeal, even to the Supreme Court, and even if they are political in nature."

In other words, it's my understanding (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong), waiting for certification is a courtesy. In the case of NY23, Hoffman had CONCEDED, therefor there was no reason to wait for certification.

Yeah, odd isn't it? I mean, who went out of their way to endorse Hoffman during the final weeks of the election? Let's see, Michael Steele, Rudy Giuliani, George Pataki, Newt Gingrich, Dick Armey, Sarah Palin, et al.

Yep, he's not Republican. But he sure got a great deal of Republican endorsements.

The good part is that even with an endorsement from Bible Spice, he lost. No acorns required.

re: #73 SixDegrees

No; you just published a link and excerpt from Hoffman's website, followed by a comment tying it directly to what you claim is an "integral part of the republican platform."

It is, in fact, quite similar to running the wrong video clip during a newscast...

In a way, KT is not far off...Palin, Thompson and other GOP muckety-mucks put their support behind Hoffman, not Dede (the NYS GOP's candidate). Even Michael Steele withdrew the RNC's support from Dede in favor of Hoffman by election night, IIRC.

87 Merryweather  Thu, Nov 19, 2009 11:19:44am

Given that Hoffman's got out the old begging bowl now, I wonder if it'll ever occur to the tea partying masses that their political heroes - Palin, Armey, Hoffman et al - are exploiting them for money? I'm more and more convinced that these people don't actually care about implementing their extremist positions, it's all about making a fast buck for them.

At least a lot of the people who go a-teabaggin' are genuinely standing up for what they believe in (I'm discounting the racist, Holocaust imagery-bearing lunatics here).

In NY, if the recount shows Hoffman the victor, he goes to Washington.

I don't doubt and have faith that he would be eventually seated, but because Owens has been seated, the process is a bit more complex and cumbersome if the seat is then contested by Owens.

multiple choice question for sarah palin: which of the following are you most proud of?

A: coming out and endorsing this nut job Hoffman to represent a district in Congress you've likely never even been to your whole life

B: coming out and endorsing Carrie Prejean, who, in additon to being a complete moron (which any sane person would've known from the jump when she opened her mouth), now is the star of multiple sex tapes much more explicit than the Playgirl shoot Levi Johnston did which you dubbed "porn" on Oprah

C: coming out with your first book, and having it co-authored by a far-right associate of a white supremecist

My point about perception is regarding Hoffman and his behavior with this matter and using phrases like "Obama regime." This is not the way a serious political candidate would or should act especially given that the regular election is within a year.

Given his identification as a Republican with the Federal Election Commission and the perception by the public as a conservative which the public easily confuses with Republicans (whether we like it or not) he becomes a political liability IMO.

That's the subtext of this article and the one by Weigel. Republicans will only lose votes on the national level and suffer their reputation by even tacitly endorsing or associating with an unknown candidate running around exclaiming "they stole the election" and "Obama regime" a la Code Pink.

And never, ever, look at an ACORN in the mirror after midnight. Seriously, dude.

The problem with this rash of stolen election claims is that soon, no-one will accept any election result as legitimate. Everyone will pour their efforts into whipping up hate and causing trouble for the people who won, rather than accepting that the people have spoken and getting ready for the next election.

OK Everyone -

ACORN, the successor in interest of the National Welfare Rights Organization, is an "INTEREST GROUP" - and Water is Wet - like "DUH!" they are US Citizens with Constitutional Rights of free speech, petition, etc.
Question IS - have they, as individuals or as an organization broken any
laws?
If they have - Prosecute them. That is all.
