Missiles fired from a suspected U.S. drone killed three militants Thursday in Pakistan's lawless tribal area along the Afghan border, intelligence officials said.

The missiles hit a house owned by a local tribesman just after midnight in Shana Khuwara village in North Waziristan, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Ahmed Noor Wazir, who witnessed the attack, said rescuers pulled three dead bodies and four badly wounded men from the rubble of the house, which was being used by Taliban militants.

Beck's music is weird, but not as weird as the fact that he's a second-generation Scientologist.

[Link: www.cracked.com...]

While he never came out about his beliefs until 2005, Beck is actually a second-generation Scientologist; there are a multitude of conspiracy theories online that both he and his record label tried to conceal his Scientologist leanings for most of his career. Clearly the label didn't want anybody to think that Beck, a 100-pound Fraggle who writes acoustic guitar raps about plastic eyeballs spray-painting vegetables, was weird or anything.

Boy, that contagious pre-PTSD sure works fast, doesn't it? And it's so virulent he got infected with it despite the fact that his position was primarily academic and he rarely interacted with patients. And when he did, he actually did things that might set off THEIR actual PTSD.

[Link: www.npr.org...]

According to the memo, Hasan hardly did any work: He saw only 30 patients in 38 weeks. Sources at Walter Reed say most psychiatrists see at least 10 times that many patients. When Hasan was supposed to be on call for emergencies, he didn't even answer the phone.

...

What those soldiers need, she says, is a psychiatrist they can trust completely — not a therapist who fails to show up and abandons his patients.

"This kind of behavior could, in fact, set off a stress reaction" in a patient, she says. "It could be a trigger to a post-traumatic stress reaction."

In other words, he was harming his (few) patients long before he just started shooting everyone. And the media STILL tried to make him the victim.

Alongside the anti-vaxxers, when it comes to kookery, is the magic-thinking crowd.

People who bestow upon certain foods magical powers.

Moldovan soldiers given onions to fight swine flu

Moldova's army is feeding its soldiers onions and garlic to help them ward off swine flu.

Defense Ministry chief doctor Col. Sergiu Vasislita says about 0.9 ounces of onions and 0.5 ounces of garlic will be added to each soldier's daily diet. That roughly corresponds to a small onion and a couple of garlic cloves.

[...]

About 6,500 troops serve in the army of Moldova, a small former Soviet republic bordering Romania and Ukraine.

Well, I guess if it works for vampires and werewolves then it should be good for the flu too, yes?

Not just in Eastern Europe...

On Nutrition: Wise food choices can help protect against flu

[...] Vaccinations are one response to the threat of the flu, but they are far from the only one. You can take a number of steps to keep your immune system strong, so you'll be ready if one or 100 of these pathogens come knocking at your door.

[...]

Functional foods first: Functional foods provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Mushrooms are a perfect example. [...]

Whey protein is another functional food that's been getting accolades in the nutritional press for a few years. [...]

When the bugs come knocking: When the first sniffle does show up in my family, I reach for the elderberry syrup or extract. [...]

Don't Forget the Garlic: The next time you feel a cold coming on, another terrific resource is garlic, which both antiviral and immune-stimulating properties. [...]

A Final Word: There's simply no overstating the importance of a good night's sleep. Sleep deprivation can mean more than just drowsiness in the morning, it can also lower your immune response, elevate your stress hormones, and make a bad day feel so much worse.

There is no doubt that diet is critical for good health, but to ascribe to specific foods magical properties is simply a hold-over from medieval days. In the last article quoted though only the last paragraph has direct bearing on an influenza infected person's immediate ability to combat the disease.

I don't doubt that at all. My best friend and brother in law are both cops and both honest, decent guys but they'll both tell you how they'll lie and say whatever they have to in order to get people to willingly give up their rights. Sorry to hear about that. But police do the same thing around here sometimes - they target a particular bar because there have been a lot of previous arrests involving drunk drivers who just came from that place, or in once case there were a lot of neighborhood complaints about customers leaving the bar and relieving themselves on porches and cars on the sidestreets. And the cops behave the same way - the slightest infraction will get you pulled over for further perusal. It sends two messages: one to the drivers, that drunk driving isn't tolerated; and the second to the establishment, which can find itself facing a number of unpleasant charges and losing it's liquor license for serving people who are impaired.

One place I know of went through this exercise repeatedly, and eventually shut down thanks to a blizzard of legal complaints from surrounding homeowners, the police and the city council who granted the liquor license.

man I love cats...I want another one

Get two - kittens - it's no more problem to take care of 2 cats than it is one cat. I know. . .we have 5 that have sort of just showed up over time.

Just don't say POP.

That's what we call it here. When I'm out of state and ask what kind of pop a restaurant serves, people look at me like I just let out a really loud fart.

No cat = more lizards. Have your lizard friends gone into hiding for the winter? I saw one in our yard last weekend. Usually they're hibernating by now.

it gets pretty warm in my semi enclosed back patio...all thes rock piled around and my slider is always open, they come right in for a while in the summer...funny you should ask because just yesterday I looked over and a road runner was perched on a chair waiting...I shoo'd him off but he was waiting for my lizards...mo fo...I like those little guys, they like to come on and snoop around

We just got a 12 week old kitten, and our 8 year old cat is not thinking this was such a swell idea. No over-the-top violence, but lots of ear boxing, hissing, spitting and those really low frequency growls cats do when they're super pissed.

It's only been about three weeks, so it's a little early to tell how this is going to work out. But I'll listen to hints if anyone has them.

You will simply have to wait it out. They will work it out. They will never be close buddies, but they will learn to live with each other. Probably better if they each have their own bowl for food - my 5 cats have their own "spots", it sort of happened naturally. We still have a few of those low-frequency growling contests, and the occasional spitting and ear-boxing, but it doesn't go beyond that.

5 dogs would be a completely different matter. We have one dog, and he takes as much effort as all 5 cats combined. We love them all, though. And one of the cats has adopted him as her BFF.

Yeah, we feed them in different locations, and they do seem to be staking out different territories, but the kitten of course is all over the place because...she's a kitten. And she likes to chase the older cat, which is usually what kicks off the conflicts.

I have a feeder and a couple of water bowls that I fill up, and they replenish the feeding/water bowls by themselves. If you had two cats who ate inside, a large feeder and a couple of water bowls - you could leave them for several days. Litter boxes - one litter box for each cat, plus one more is what is recommended, but we find we're OK with just 2 litter boxes. They would need checking on about every 3 days. Have some toys around for them to play with, or they will find and destroy the toilet paper rolls.

Or them getting into an actual pissing contest. We had a cat, but since we both work, the wife decided that it needed a companion to keep it company while we were gone. They hated each other and would "mark" their territory on a daily basis. They both ended up going to a shelter and the carpet is still stained in multiple spots.

I have found that male cats, for some reason, are much more people friendly than female cats. But they will wander and seem to have more energy, want to "play" (i.e., bite) more than the female cats do.

I know that's true for dogs, at least in my experience. Female dobes are much more protective and even more territorial than the males. Fixed or not.
