NY Times: Giuliani Bails on Governor Race

New York Times writer Danny Hakim reports that Rudy Giuliani has decided not to run for Governor of New York.

Former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani has decided not to run for governor next year after months of considering a candidacy, according to people who have been told of the decision.

Many Republican leaders had viewed Mr. Giuliani as the strongest potential candidate as voter anger and anti-Albany sentiment have appeared to be swelling.

It remains unclear whether the former mayor is considering any other political race in 2010. Some have urged him to take on Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand, who is newly installed in office, has never run statewide and is still introducing herself to voters in some areas. Mr. Giuliani is said to have made no decision about such a race. …

It was not clear what prompted the decision, but the possibility of facing Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, who is quietly planning a run for governor on the Democratic ticket, may not have appealed to Mr. Giuliani, who suffered a bruising defeat in the 2008 Republican presidential primary.

Maybe Rudy's just tired.

is Rudi a leader or not?...we know he's a celebrity...I think he just wants a gift position...here Rudi, take this

an I for a Y...is that the rule?

Gillibrand is weak. Not liked by the Dem base. She appeals to cross overs and Independents. They won't be pulling "D" on the next ballot if the polls show much. Senate is a better grab for Rudy than a Governor's job with a legislature that will try to stop him at every turn. We need a Republican like Giuliani in the Senate - someone to draw the RINO shots who will shoot back and hit hard.

The Daily News is reporting that he intends to run for the US Senate.

That would be the race that Rudy dropped out when facing Hillary after learning he had prostate cancer.

He may feel that he can't do what needs doing at the state level in New York. The unions and special intrest have the state government sewn up tight. He may not feel he can win against those groups as governor. Sometimes being a winner means not fighting battles you'll lose.

The Senate is a better job if you have no chance of being a Governor with a cooperative legislature.

a sweet job, that

The NYS GOP is a mess so he can't count on them to get the job done, especially after what's happened with NY-23. He's probably also looking at polls and seeing that Cuomo would clean everyone's clock. Why run when he can go after the Senate and Gillenbrand's seat.

I myself would make a fine Senator, imo

One of many articles on why Gillibrand has a target on her forehead.

She may not make it past the primary.

Yep. For having those rifles where she could use them to defend herself, Gillenbrand is a DINO to most of the liberal base. And just like their opposite numbers in the Tea Party Crowd, the want to play "Purge the DINO!". Fools.

Everyone -

I see it more as a "Done Deal" - Andy to Albany, Rudy to DC. I see it as an overall PLUS. Further, when Andy wakes up, he will see that HE got the short end of the stick. RUDY will be the US Senator from NY, a la MOYNIHAN 'til he is either ready to be or IS carried out Feet First. He has, in his own way Earned It. That is all. -S-

albusteve -

My Senators are Bob Menendez, I am as - or more Anti-Castro than he is, and Frank Lautenberg, who I am just as Jewish as. Maybe I should run.

We're at a point where any kind of sane and level-headed Republican should be supported vigorously, regardless of their positions on the issues (especially social issues). We can't just count on the democrats to single handedly mow down the theocratic fringe. We simply cannot afford to have every election turn into a NY-23, because the moderate dem./republican isn't going to win them all.

re: #16 kobra_55

kobra -

I will support a Gay, Pro-Choice Republican who gets it right on economic issues and National Defense all day over a Pelosi/Reid Democrat. Two out of FOUR is "Batting .500."

I think the lack of posts in this thread reflects something about the lack of enthusiasm for Giuliani.

That's from March. She's doing quite well now.

I hope Rudy will run for the Senate as I think he has a really good chance of winning and it would drive the Dems crazy if he wins.

Did Gillibrand say whether she is in favor of bringing KSM to NYC for trial?

24 Frogmarch  Fri, Nov 20, 2009 5:51:22am

Andrew Cuomo - good luck with that, New York.

Victim of Jon Stewart perhaps?

re: #18 Obdicut

I was thinking it might be apathy towards Giuliani as well, but it also might be that Giulian thinks he has it pretty easy right now. He can keep his celebrity status and perhaps run in 2012. This of course depends on the state of the Republican party at that time.
