Update: Palin Apologizes for Leaving Books Unsigned

US News • Views: 2,127

At her Facebook page, Sarah Palin apologizes for leaving hundreds of people with unsigned books after they waited in the rain for 6 hours: Not Enough Hours in the Day.

I’ve been told that yesterday there were supporters in Noblesville who stood in long lines for hours in the cold and rain, and the book signing event ended without a chance to say hello to everyone who showed up. I am so sorry. We are working on a solution for those who were left behind.

I apologize.

Piss-poor planning and/or prima donna-ism. FFS, these folk turned out to see you and get you to scrawl something on their books. If you weren't gonna do it, then let folk know at the start.

One may or may not like Sarah Palin. I liked her at first. Now, not so much. But still, more than Obama, Mr. "punished with a baby."

And at about 25% into the Obama presidency: huge deficits, huge unemployment and a huge, continual, one year long shouting match about "health care."

IMHO Palin stands a real chance at becoming POTUS.

You know these are always no win deals for the person doing the signing. And it is almost impossible avoid. I give Sarah a pass on this. 10 years ago I stood in a long line at the stadium during the off-season with two of my sons who were just crazy for Jeff Bagwell and who was there to sign autographs. We had to stand in one line to get a ticket for the signing which was being done for the exact purpose of making sure they wouldn't overload Mr. Bagwell. Well when we got to the front actual autograph line, just about ready, some handler informed me that I had only one ticket so only one of my son's could get an autograph. This was some sort of "Sophie's Choice" test for me. In my inimical fashion I threw a big fit right there on the spot but the ticket taker stood there stone faced. So finally I thrust one boy forward and Jeff dutifully signed and we were ushered off while my other son broke out into a spectacular crying jag. While I held him to console him (while his brother was teasing him and showing him the autograph HE got) some older guy came by and asked us what was wrong. Between sobs my son told him and the older guy told us to come with him. He took us to some office in the stadium, got the boys cokes and had us sit in nice cozy chairs. At this point I realize that we were talking to Drayton McLane who is the owner of the Houston Astros. About 20 minutes later, McLane comes back with Jeff Bagwell in tow and my younger son not only got an autograph that was much better than the older son had gotten but both boys got their photos taken with Jeff Bagwell.

32 Cato the Elder  Sat, Nov 21, 2009 11:00:35am

May I just point out that the apology itself is a lie?

She writes:

I’ve been told that yesterday there were supporters in Noblesville who stood in long lines for hours in the cold and rain [...]

Nobody needed to tell her; she was there. And the footage shows her rock-star bus rumbling to a start while those same people stood outside and chanted "sign our books" and "quitter". She was perfectly well aware of what was happening, and now pretends it was some unaccountable screw-up.

Shameful lying opportunistic skeezer.

Good on her for apologizing, although it begs the question of what she was thinking at the time when she got up and left with all those people still standing in line. The whole "I've been told..." intro is an attempt to distance herself and - a recurring theme with Palin, it seems - to shift blame for her own failures onto others.

Has it occurred to anyone that the Democrats are taking careful notes on all this?

42 kingkenrod  Sat, Nov 21, 2009 11:08:55am

She's lying - as this report shows, she was signing books right in the middle of the store. How could she leave without knowing people were still in line?

On the plus side, she didn't make any excuses in her apology, like blaming Borders. The story linked above says her contract with Borders requires her to leave at 9PM.

51 kingkenrod  Sat, Nov 21, 2009 11:19:52am

On another topic, while reading Palin's apology at her Facebook page, I noticed this post about Reid's Senate health care bill:

Among the provisions in this bill will be a $2500 cap on Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs).

Most employers cap FSA contributions at $5000, so this makes an additional $2500 taxable for people who use these accounts. And the people hardest hit by this are those with expensive, chronic conditions.

52 webevintage  Sat, Nov 21, 2009 11:21:53am

I do not like Palin, but I am willing to entertain the idea that she did not suggest leaving and that this was piss poor planning on the part of her handlers, publisher and the local store.

That being said, most authors who care about their fans go out of their way to sign until everyone is though the line or they make an effort to plan in advance.
I stood in line for hours once to get my copy of American Gods signed by Neil Gaiman. He stayed longer then planned and signed until everyone was happy and he signed things people had brought with them.
As is so happens this was on his blog just yesterday in response to a question about some upcoming Canadian signings:

"It's going to depend on the numbers of people who turn up. Assuming that it's around a thousand people in each location (Winnipeg and Decatur) I'll probably pre-sign a load of books, so people who just want to hear me read or answer questions and don't want to stand in a long line can get a signed book and go home, and we'll do something along the lines of I'll sign one thing, but if you buy a book of mine from the store I'll sign two things, which allows people to get the Thing They Love Most signed, and get something signed for someone (as we're heading into the holidays then) or for themselves."

Planning and consideration for the people who put a roof over your head goes a very long way to create long running devotion from fans...well that plus being able to write a book on your own.

Once again we are destined to choose what we perceive as individuals the less of two evils. The American legacy continues. Many people felt the same way in 2008 wherein many citizens liked McCain more than Obama.

We descend into mediocrity in our quest for the prize driven by populist rhetoric hypnotizing the masses with their revanchist mood.

Just to toss a thought out here on the cultural current climate, and I will admit, I buy in myself some days, and would like all things to be always perfect, but, alas, I live in a real world. Disappointment is not an unheard of condition, based on my own expectations...and that of groups I am connected to. Shouldn't surprise the self-aware thinking being, either.

The overtone seems to have become a "Zero Tolerance" policy on both sides of the political equation, and even in the middle. Fingers are pointed about how the other side didn't do it perfectly (and...always ask, who's making the standard?). It happens. It will happen more.

With so much information, it's easy picking to say "that wasn't perfect" and, there will be plenty of cases when that's a good look at the reality.

Conversely, there is the "Listen, I'm only human" request for grace made, again, on both sides. You know, there is some validity to that. Top it off with many things, particularly in the political/semi-political arena, to be staffed by "volunteers." Even had a handful, or a lot of them? Herding cats, it is. Been around cats much? Volunteers, many times, come equipped with passion, and not the skills necessary, to pull of this event or that.

Put those two comments back together: "Hey, I'm not perfect, but I DEMAND that you are!" seems to be all too frequent an observation for me.

"You should have known" has a place, but then again, Monday Morning QB gigs are cheap and easy. Who among us hasn't been bagged by that crowd, for the small, and the large and the in between? If you try to micro-manage a big event by yourself...then you'll be tagged for that. If you don't and the requisite experience isn't in the mix...then stuff ends up off the tracks. we could have a link fiesta with such items and overload the servers for Charles.

Zero tolerance of errors? Yes, strive for it. When it doesn't appear, analyze and do it better next time.

My two cents.

God help us all if that ever happened. I think that even despite Obama's mistakes (yes, I voted for him, but I'm not blind to his flaws), if she was the GOP nominee, even some Republicans would be hard pressed to vote for her.

Then again, she's already been on a losing presidential ticket and has proven herself a quitter by leaving her job as governor midway through her first term, not to mention her public pissing contest with a teenager. People aren't likely to forget that. When's the last time a losing candidate came back later to be the nominee? The only one who comes to mind is Nixon after he lost to JFK, and she sure as hell doesn't have the resume that Nixon had when he ran again.

Obama has fans on what? Race, admit it, and campaign promises to give stuff out. How solid is that?

Which is a bit like saying Slayer fans are stronger than U2 fans. Palin has devoted diehards, but big negatives among moderates. Great for a media career or a TV show! Bad for becoming president.

They were also easy to open and fix in minutes in most cases...almost tool-less. And...any Dell restore CD works in any Dell...imagine the possibilities!

Now have a desktop and a laptop. One is a year old, the other 4 and they still work fine. Lately, if a machine has SP3, no spyware, no viruses and plenty of free HD space, I tell them to go to as much RAM as the systems fits (well...as the OS can handle if it's a good MB). 2GB has made many systems of my clients in small offices very happy. I think XP patches to keep the bad stuff away just consumed most of 512 (I did see one person with 256...:( ), and even 1GB is dragging some.

If the economy ever picks back up...I'd love to go back to the Mac world. Have dabbled in Linux (red Hat/Fedora 10/11) and Ubuntu. Nice, but the few drivers I needed (1394a on one display on the other) were a mystery to me, so they are on "excess" boxes in the play room.

Dilutes the value of the originals. It'd be as if da Vinci decided to do a raft of Mona Lisa portraits and commissioned the sails from the Royal Navy for material. Nobody'd want one then.

I will not defend a crazed jealous husband who kills his lousy cheating wife who screws his best friend in his own bed in the matrimonial home.
However I think you would admit, in fairness, that the wife's extramarital conduct is qualitatively more culpable that the burkaless daughter who simply wants to integrate and fit in with her friends.
As such the analogy is a bit strained.

On another topic, while reading Palin's apology at her Facebook page, I noticed this post about Reid's Senate health care bill:

Most employers cap FSA contributions at $5000, so this makes an additional $2500 taxable for people who use these accounts. And the people hardest hit by this are those with expensive, chronic conditions.

From what I understand, the employers wanted the $2,500 FSA cap and that the Dems caved in so as to get the votes. Similar story goes for the House bill as well.

Clever on the part of Palin's people to use the FSA cap - disingenuous but it is clever.

re: #4 Cato the Elder

Hmmm... I don't have time to read 2,000 pages of the Obamacare bill, so let's assume for the sake of argument that it doesn't specifically create anything that could be called a "death panel".
It doesn't need to for her comment to still be valid.
If you have government funded healthcare then you get rationing, as night follows day. So some people are going to be denied treatment, whether as a matter of a general policy, or decisions made on a case by case basis. I'm not a doctor, but I assume that there are some illnesses that will cause people to die sooner without treatment than they would have done if treated. i.e their lives will be shortened.
I doubt that any individual government bureaucrat is going to put his name to a document specifically denying care to Mr X for illness Y, so the decisions on which treatments are funded and which aren't will be made by committees.
So you will get "life shortening committees", whatever it says in any bill.

"Death panels" is a bit more succinct. How is it a "lie" ?

Since there will never be unlimited resources for medical treatment, some people aren't going to get treated no matter what system is in place, public or private or any combination. The point is that some branch of government will end up making life and death decisions in any public system. If you're happy for the government to do that, well good luck.

Book signings can be absolutely horrible for the fans and the author. As a former librarian, I've had fantastic authors with readers lined up wanting autographs at the end of the lecture with plenty of planned time, and guess what, the event goes longer than anticipated. The Director says, "we're closing now." So you try to move into the parking lot and the lights are on timers, to conserve energy and all becomes a mess. Gee, maybe more people might support the library in times of funding shortages if they perceived an administration that might actually accommodate the public. I've had friends as bookstore managers who have encountered the same mentality in corporate headquarters. But Palin should have stayed and tried to issue some sort of apology then, or signed in the rain, or given "rainchecks."

203 palomino  Sat, Nov 21, 2009 3:57:58pm

re: #200 barflytom

You're ignoring the fact that health care rationing already exists, ergo, using your own loose definition of the term, death panels are in place NOW in both public and private insurance systems.

So then the only real question is: do you trust a PUBLIC death panel as opposed to one run by a PRIVATE corporation. This is clearly not the point Palin was trying to make when she brought the topic up in the first place.

204 Locker  Sat, Nov 21, 2009 4:20:56pm

re: #200 barflytom

I think you do demonstrate, if not capture her point quite clearly. She wants to scare people. Now personally if health care is going to be rationed do I want it rationed by:

A. An elected body of citizen's who's motivation is to help.
B. A private company who's motivations is to maximize profits.

The easy choice is A.

Now, folk will start to scream about inefficiency and possible corruption. Personally I'd rather have the exception (corruption) out to hurt me vs the normal system (profit motive) being out to get me.

Now if you want to trust corporations to do this then good luck with that.

Even if I didn't like Sarah Palin, I know and understand that it's very hard traveling on a book tour--and she has a family. For Christ's sake, you can't even go to the bathroom when you need to--I know.
I'm really surprised at the vitriol towards her on this website. What in the world gives? You'd think she was Brittany Spears or Lindsay Lohan, for goodness sake.
She apologized. Let it go. Why be on the same bandwagon with those who are so full of vindictive, spiteful, and in the end, quite counterproductive anger towards her? I'm wondering if there were the same kind of comments about Hillary and her book? I'm sure she didn't hang around at every Barnes and Noble at every hog-wallow between here and Arkansas to sign books for her fans.
