Tech Note: ‘Return After Posting Reply’

Technology • Views: 4,001

We have a new feature in our commenting system, requested by several people. If you click the ‘Reply’ or ‘Quote’ buttons on the top line of a comment to post a reply to someone’s comment, you’ll see a new checkbox appear at the top left of the comment posting box, labeled “Return after posting reply.” It looks like this:

If this box is checked when you post your reply, your browser window will be automatically placed back at the top of the comment to which you were replying, letting you easily continue reading the thread from that point on without having to scroll back up and hunt for it.

If the box isn’t checked when you post the comment, it behaves the way it always has.

If you change your mind after clicking ‘Reply’ or ‘Quote,’ and clear the entire comment posting box, the ‘Return after posting reply’ button will also disappear.

The status of the checkbox is saved in a cookie in your browser, so if, as a rule, you prefer not to return to the originating comment after posting a reply, just uncheck it once and it will be unchecked the next time you reply to a comment.

Researcher Says Shroud of Turin Is Real

A Vatican researcher has rekindled the age-old debate over the Shroud of Turin, saying that faint writing on the linen proves it was the burial cloth of Jesus. Experts say the historian may be reading too much into the markings, and they stand by carbon-dating that points to the shroud being a medieval forgery.

Barbara Frale, a researcher at the Vatican archives, says in a new book that she used computer-enhanced images of the shroud to decipher faintly written words in Greek, Latin and Aramaic scattered across the cloth.

She asserts that the words include the name "(J)esu(s) Nazarene" — or Jesus of Nazareth — in Greek. That, she said, proves the text could not be of medieval origin because no Christian at the time, even a forger, would have mentioned Jesus without referring to his divinity. Failing to do so would risk being branded a heretic.

Little Bruce and Jenny are only 10 years old, but they know they are in love.

One day they decide that they want to get married, so Bruce goes to Jenny's father to ask him for her hand. Bruce bravely walks up to him and says, "Mr. Smith, me and Jenny are in love and I want to ask you for her hand in marriage."

Thinking that this was just the cutest thing, Mr. Smith replies, "Well Bruce, you are only 10. Where will you two live?"

Without even taking a moment to think about it, Bruce replies, "In Jenny's room. It's bigger than mine and we can both fit there nicely."

Still thinking this is just adorable, Mr. Smith says with a huge grin, "Okay then how will you live? You're not old enough to get a job. You'll need to support Jenny."

Again, Bruce instantly replies, "Our allowance, Jenny makes five bucks a week and I make 10 bucks a week. That's about 60 bucks a month and that should do us just fine."

Mr. Smith is impressed Bruce has put so much thought into this. 'Well Bruce, it seems like you have everything figured out. I just have one more question. What will you do if the two of you should have little children of your own?"

Bruce just shrugs his shoulders and says, "Well, we've been lucky so far."

Mr. Smith no longer thinks the little shit is adorable.

Coca-Cola leads cheering section for 1-world climate change taxes

100 companies push '16 days left to seal deal' on $10 trillion treaty

Coca-Cola is spearheading a coalition of more than 100 companies pushing a United Nations climate treaty to bind the U.S. to cap-and-trade emissions regulation, commit the world's wealthiest nations to a potential $10 trillion in foreign aid and, possibly, form a proposed international "super-grid" for regulating and distributing electric power worldwide.

Together with the SAP and Siemens corporations, Coca-Cola launched a website called Hopenhagen, leading up to the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, which opens on Dec. 7. The website invites the citizens of the world to sign a petition demanding world leaders draft binding agreements on climate change and advertises, as of today, "16 days left to seal the deal."

Other "friends" of Hopenhagen include media outlets Newsweek, Discovery Channel, Huffington Post, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, The Wall Street Journal and Clear Channel, among others, Internet giants Yahoo, Google and AOL and dozens of other companies and organizations.

As WND reported, however, Lord Christopher Monckton, a former science adviser to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, asserts the real purpose of the U.N.'s meeting in Copenhagen is to use concern over "global warming" as a pretext to lay the foundation for a one-world government.

He has warned the proposed Copenhagen agreement would cede U.S. sovereignty, mandate a massive wealth transfer from the United States to pay reparations for "climate debt" to Third World countries and create a new "world government" to enforce the treaty's provisions.

And even if Monckton is merely fanning the flames of fear in those suspicious of the U.N., Coca-Cola's "Hopenhagen" project isn't doing anything to put out the fire:

"We're all citizens of Hopenhagen," boasts the website, adding, "Hopenhagen: Population 6.8 billion."

"Sign the Climate Petition and become a citizen of Hopenhagen," the website encourages.

Specifically, the petition states:

"We the peoples of the world urge political leaders to:

"Seal the Deal at COP 15 on a climate agreement that is definitive, equitable and effective

"Set binding targets to cut greenhouse gases by 2020

"Establish a framework that will bolster the climate resilience of vulnerable countries and protect lives and livelihoods

"Support developing countries' adaptation efforts and secure climate justice for all."
"We also believe that anything is possible if we work together," states Coca-Cola on the Hopenhagen site. "That's why we're collaborating with governments, NGOs, other businesses and our consumers, to help tackle global challenges like climate change."

A closer look at the "deal" Hopenhagen is hoping to "seal," however, reveals a call to unprecedented levels of international regulation and wealth redistribution and includes many of the measures Monckton decries as an effort to "impose a communist world government on the world."

That sounds about right. Also, the left's demographics (younger, more mobile) would probably bias them towards other, newer forms of media -- mainly the internet and blogs. The right dominates radio and cable news and the left has the internet and new media.

There is something of a disconnect there for sure. But there could be many reasons for it. I think a lot of voters watch very little cable news. Do you think all voters are as informed as you are? I would say they probably are not. As huge as FOX's ratings are, Bill O'Reilly (their alpha dog when it comes to ratings) on a typical night will get maybe 15-20% of the audience that CSI or other entertainment shows get. Cable news ratings mean something when compared to similar shows on other cable news channels. But O'Reilly is only getting about 2-3% of the total TV audience on a given night.

Talking tech- Is Photo Shop CS4 that much better than 2 for regular retouching/editing? I have the Lightroom beta and I am really liking it. But I hate to buy Lightroom and pay again to upgrade to CS4 also.

I think so, but I suppose it depends on your definition of "regular" retouching / editing. I use PS professionally but for very different things depending on the kind of work. If it is forensic then I stick to Bridge first, working on RAW files saved with imbedded hardware cryptographic image authentication, and use Photoshop only for analysis. The workflow for this is absolutely identical in CS2, no change except for more unused creative features. For other kinds of jobs (industrial advertising / studio) I find the "refine edge" functionality introduced in CS3 and improved in CS4 to be a MASSIVE improvement on the basic "feather" selection controls in CS2. Navigation runs smoother, preview looks great at all magnifications, awesome new creative selection camera raw processing options, opacity and feather controls for masks, and tone protection in dodge and burn (huge!.)

I'm not the average user, I have an M.S. in the physics of light, bought the suite at the academic discount and get to expense it. I'd say as a general rule if someone is not using more than a third of the tools in CS2, even occasionally, then the improvements to CS4 are mostly going to go unused. But the feel, response and performance will be noticed as rather improved, largely due to graphics card optimization.

I do miss Brit Hume, he was their best guy but is now semi retired. They just hired John Stossel away from ABC and he is darn good.

Brit Hume? The guy that likes to go sky diving with Bush 41 and never misses an opportunity to defend his son?

Isn't Greta Van Susteren the one who made the "terrorist fist bump" remark?

re: #171 Racer X

Welcome to Hopenhagen.

Hopenhagen is a movement, a moment and a chance at a new beginning. The hope that in Copenhagen this December – during the United Nations Climate Change Conference – we can build a better future for our planet and a more sustainable way of life. It is the hope that we can create a global community that will lead our leaders into making the right decisions. The promise that by solving our environmental crisis, we can solve our economic crisis at the same time.

Hopenhagen is change – and that change will be powered by all of us.

And Cheetos.

Sorry, but they're partisan, all. It's just how the network operates. No need to defend it and pretend it's something other then what it really is.

Thanks for the reply! My work is all over the place subject wise. often it's jewelry, related processes, and some gems. Then for fun I do rock & roll shows at the good clubs in Hollywood/West LA. I have had to study light/color in depth for my alloy and photo work. Interesting stuff. I wish I had your formal education!

Your point about "refine edge" could be mission critical for me. Masking out already difficult jewelry items is way too time consuming. I can wind up making very little per hour like that.

My latest for fun & advertising shot at work for the web site...
