It also seems like it's encouraging tax fraud or just not paying your taxes.

I know, less exciting that the violent overthrow part, but I think more likely to actually start happening in significant numbers.

Oh, boy. This is pure idiocy on their part. Cluebat to Lafayette County Republicans, tax evasion is a crime, which their first point seems to imply.
/three more years of this nonsense?

Oh, Hell. Those fools are going to get people killed. They actually think that a revolution is a good thing. Violent revolutions have sometimes been necessary things (though I do not believe that that is the case in today's USA), but they are never good things.

You say that war is all glory, I know that war is all Hell.

True. But it could be good, or bad. "Incumbent" tells you nothing except that a person already holds that office, not how they've been doing in it.

If the majority of people vote for the "incumbents" (thus signaling their approval government policies) then the pure and uncorrupted souls should thwart the will of the people and establish ... what? Not a democracy, I guess.

22 BARACK THE VOTE  Sun, Nov 22, 2009 10:28:12am

I don't think this reference is intentional on the part of the GOP there, but 'the Beast' and 'Starve the Beast' is language that's been taken over by neo-confederates, anti-gubbmint types, white supremacist and separatists, and Christian Identity folks, and many other scattered evil nutcase groups about the US govt-- the type of people who think Social Security numbers are the 'Mark of the Beast' and the US govt is the Antichrist. Assorted lunatics living 'off the grid'. For people with that kind of ideology, this exhortation to 'live free or die' is frighteningly literal.

Bad times.

Illegal too:

TITLE 18--CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE

PART I--CRIMES

CHAPTER 19--CONSPIRACY

Sec. 373. Solicitation to commit a crime of violence

(a) Whoever, with intent that another person engage in conduct
constituting a felony that has as an element the use, attempted use, or
threatened use of physical force against property or against the person
of another in violation of the laws of the United States, and under
circumstances strongly corroborative of that intent, solicits, commands,
induces, or otherwise endeavors to persuade such other person to engage
in such conduct, shall be imprisoned not more than one-half the maximum
term of imprisonment or (notwithstanding section 3571) fined not more
than one-half of the maximum fine prescribed for the punishment of the
crime solicited, or both; or if the crime solicited is punishable by
life imprisonment or death, shall be imprisoned for not more than twenty
years.

Yes. The Republicans ran the House and the Senate and the White House.

We are talking about a philosophy that started in the Reagan years in a small way and turned into a juggernaut over time. Tax cuts were always good because by denying funds to the government it would have to shrink...right?

Only it didn't shrink, the congress kept right on spending money they didn't have and financing it through bond issues. That is why we now have a lot of the deficit that we do. This isn't about the "last eight years" this is about the fiscal irresponsibility of the last thirty. It is about the kind of attitude on capitol hill that allowed the prescription drug benefit to pass without any attempt to pay for any of it. $32 Trillion in new Medicare spending over the long term according to the CBO with no new revenues coming in to pay for it.

Take a little broader view please.

So, is it still Reagans fault?

Good thing I have a Zombie Plan already in place. Couple of tweaks and replace all mention of 'zombies' with 'rebels' and I should get through the worst of it pretty painlessly.

My Zombie Plan involves my local jail, but I'm afraid the rebels might let me out and expect me to join in.

Of course, given the Contra Costa town in which I currently live, the idea of my neighbors rising up against Obama's government seems vanishingly small. We do have some Republicans, but they tend to be middle-aged, middle-class, and mild-mannered. Also, they don't want to become the majority, because as it is, they can vote without waiting in line.

Go LIONS! It's tough being a Lions fan.

I'm from Michigan. I ceased being a fan when Barry Sanders retired, and I did not blame him one bit for what he did. The Lions organization is utterly incapable of putting a good product on the field. I remember about 10 years ago telling all my friends, who didn't want to believe me at the time, that the Lions were screwed for at least 5 years when they signed Charlie Batch to a long-term deal. It pisses me off to no end to watch Matt Millen calling Michigan games talking about what personnel they need to win.

I follow the Lions half-heartedly. The last few years I have referred to the Lions game every Sunday as the Detroit Lions Comedy Show, but I watch more often than not and usually chuckle when they inevitably blow it.

When Mr. Ford gets serious about winning football games, which I won't hold my breath waiting for, then I will call myself a fan again.

Reminiscent of a story related of a member of the Yondotega Club in Detroit. Founded in 1891, it is limited to 150 members, with new members accepted only upon the death of a current member. Almost nothing is known about the club, other than it's prestigious membership and it's lavish weekly dinners. Secrecy is the rule, and extends even to spouses of Yon members:

Wives, harassed by lack of information, have remarked the members were "impossible" in the old days. "They still walk out on anything to keep a date at the Yon", said one wife. "And I must say I grow weary of this silly little custom of toasting deceased members and the President of the United States which takes them out of circulation most of New Year's Day when they hold their open house." A member, who did not wish to be identified said this Yon wife was misinformed. The members do not always toast the nation's President. "In some administrations we merely toast the office of the President of the United States," he explained.

Rant and rave all you want; I will defend to the death your right to blather thusly. But there is dangerous ground upon which you tread at your extreme peril.

Merely tweak a few variables, and this kind of bullshit is EXACTLY the same as the murderous crap spewed by Ayman al-Zawahiri and mullah Mohammed Omar.

Among Republicans… only 27% say Obama actually won the race, with 52% — an outright majority — saying that ACORN stole it, and 21% are undecided. Among McCain voters, the breakdown is 31%-49%-20%. By comparison, independents weigh in at 72%-18%-10%, and Democrats are 86%-9%-4%.

I thought the whole idea of a democracy was that the population gets to vote for their preferred candidate, safe from coercion, and the minority, unable to elect their candidate, implicitly agrees to abide by the decision of the majority until the next election as long as their rights were respected. I assumed (I'm not American) that the Constitution was designed to make sure the majority wasn't able to subvert the political process and a corollary to this was that the minority's rights were thus protected.

Can anyone show me how the rights of the far, far, far right have been threatened to a degree that the agreement has been broken?

The problem with revolutions in a Democratic society is that the Democracy would have had to have broken down before Revolution becomes a viable and patriotic option.

That hasn't happened, in fact, more people voted in the last election than in any other American election, ever.

So the first step for revolutionaries isn't not paying your taxes or starving the beast or any of that nonsense. If you were being practical about your revolutionary ambitions the first step is de-legitimizing elections. Once people lose faith in elections, at that point they can start to think about some other course of action.

As long as people are voting, even if they are holding their nose while they do so, they are not ripe for armed revolution.

re: #225 dugmartsch

Great points, both. With a casual think about it, it seems to me that there are two situations that could occur. One is the majority-rules/minority-rights dynamic that stops protecting minorities. The other is just downright government oppression. For the first example, both sides probably have issues that would tip them there (from the right's view - taxation becomes usury, on the left's - legislation of morals). For the second, it would be things like sliding down a slippery slope represented for example by the expanded FISA laws). Neither situation is anywhere near the point of revolution, but even if it were, putting together said revolution would be virtually impossible.

I wouldn't worry about an uprising of Missourians just yet.

re: #226 HelloDare

Not only SNL--I was shocked, I tell you, shocked when I saw this last night.
But today, I read Mo Dowd:

If we could see a Reduced Shakespeare summary of Obama’s presidency so far, it would read:

Dither, dither, speech. Foreign trip, bow, reassure. Seminar, summit. Shoot a jump shot with the guys, throw out the first pitch in mom jeans. Compromise, concede, close the deal. Dither, dither, water down, news conference.

It’s time for the president to reinvent this formula and convey a more three-dimensional person.

Palin can be stupefyingly simplistic, but she seems dynamic. Obama is impressively complex but he seems static.

She nurtures her grass roots while he neglects his.

He struggles to transcend identity politics while she wallows in them. As he builds an emotional moat around himself, she exuberantly pushes whatever she has, warts and all — the good looks, the tabloid-perfect family, the Alaska quirkiness, the kids with the weird names.

QUOTING OVER--Weird names like Malia and Sasha--or god forbid BARACK--I guess Obama is the new normal.

It's hard for me to draw a connection between the left's insanity during George W. Bush's presidency and this insanity.

I'm not saying the left doesn't have its nutters -- but, dayum, 4x increase in presidential threats? guns being brought to presidential evidents by guys with signs that proclaim the benefits of assassination. People fearing their guns are going to be taken away at the same time President Obama signs legislation decreasing the limitations of guns?

This is NEXT LEVEL stuff going on here.

I actually like the term "crackers"--sticks and stones, but CRACKERS--hey, I like it! Crackers are the those things that people pull apart at Christmas where I come from--they have a cap or something that pops and inside there are some cheap goodies (the cheaper the better!)--like a party hat, favor, confetti--stuff. They were next to our plates at Christmas dinner. Sometimes, you can get upscale crackers--with real stuff--like a Patek Phillipe watch--but don't count on it at my house. So, Cracker, eh--pretty on the outside and party fixin's on the inside. I'll take it.

Missouri is not "deep south", no matter how you look at it, imo.

Nor are Colorado or Michigan.

So. . . you can believe these incidents are a result of "deep south" thinking, or not. All I know is that these incidents did not take place in "deep south" states, which leads me to believe this sort of craziness cannot be attributed to the "deep south" alone.

When I lived in Italy, I read the International Herald Tribune (which is published by the Times) and saw so many typos, left out words, stories that jumped to nowhere--downright mistakes--that I became much more attentive to the Times itself. Maureen Dowd, who "went off" Clinton, used to make me smile a bit--but she has been too long at the job. She wouldn't be working there if the Times was what it used to be--now its columnists are just no longer critical thinkers--just critical carpers.

Get your PC bullshit out of my face.

Is he the anti-christ because he's black, or is his being black incidental? Much as I disagree with your identification of anyone as the anti-christ, if the ethnicity or skin colour of skin is just incidental to your ire then I would respect your opinion for what it is worth. However, if you are calling him the anti-christ because of colour/ethnicity, then I have a big problem with you.

Just as not everyone making negative comments about someone of another color is being racist, the idea that it is in some way PC and only PC (which is a nonsense label used to minimize social concerns), to call someone racist after witnessing him/her apply a negative label to someone of another skin colour, is ignorant.

Although a simple comment isn't enough to determine bigotry, and shamefully, many on the left do believe it is, the context of the comment and/or the history of the speaker is enough to evaluate the comment. In many cases, the people calling Obama the anti-christ (or something equally stupid) are indeed bigots, some just a little and some absolutely raving.

So at what is a revolution a good thing? There clearly is a point where it is; after all our country started that way and I think most people are glad that happened. So at what point? If kids in public schools at every grade level were required to attend a one-hour class teaching about the New Testament? If all abortion, drinking of alcohol, and sodomy were federal crimes? If the FBI were allowed to routinely tap our phone lines and search our houses without a warrant and without our necessarily knowing it? If all that were true, how would you feel about a billboard with a message of revolution?

Circumstances that would, to me, justify a FOR-REAL, NO-SHIT revolution would by their very nature preclude the existence of billboards calling for revolution.

Can anyone show me how the rights of the far, far, far right have been threatened to a degree that the agreement has been broken?

re: #229 William of Orange

I'm not a US citizen. Never been there. And this country seems to get stranger and stranger. It's become quite a challenge what Joe Average thinks. In truth, I don't even know if I'll ever meet a Joe Average. Everyone seems to be pulled to the left or the right... And those who claim to be mainstream are extremes in the eyes of the others.

It's becoming harder to understand the USA.

Here are some generalizations about Americans that might be helpful:

1) Most of the people you see posting here on LGF won't be seen out in the real world marching in circles, carrying signs, and shouting slogans. We generally have more important things to do, even if that more important thing consists solely of sitting on our ass. Ass-sitting is a time-honored American tradition, and we do tend to take it somewhat seriously.

2) Nearly none of us care anything at all about Jay-Z, P-Diddy, Lady Ga Ga, or Miley Cyrus. Pretty much none of us know anything about them or their music, nor can we explain how or why these people came to be considered paragons of American musical artistry. A great many of us who are otherwise not crazy view their success as evidence that we have been invaded by aliens with extremely unsophisticated musical taste.

3) we like to complain on the Internet. We enjoy typing our Opinion Of The Moment into whatever blank input box makes itself available to us. Most of us realize that, ultimately, it's just a bit of entertainment and it doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

NOTE:
Actual American Crazy Persons are not subject to the above. If you encounter an American who seems like a typical Internet comment writer, but whose eyeballs are counterclockwise-rotating spirals, you should take immediate steps to shun and avoid them.

Otherwise, just be patient. We'll settle down and behave as rationally as we're able after a few minutes.

302 Irenicum  Sun, Nov 22, 2009 1:46:23pm

re: #292 katemaclaren

I agree with your basic statement. But I would add that each country has historical and cultural distinctives that shape whatever type of racism in existence there. In America's case, anti-black racism has its roots so far back, and its effect was/is so widespread, that it's not quite the same as other anti immigrant sentiments. It's related to be sure. But it's also qualitatively different. So in that sense, not all racisms are the same. And having our first black president has unleashed a torrent of not too subtly repressed racism, as recent posts have attested.

Cold concrete apartments
Rise up from wet black asphalt
Below them a few carcasses
Of the long gone age of privacy

It takes a scary kind of illness
To design a place like this for pay
Downtown's an endless generic mall
Of video games and fast food chains

One by one the little houses
Are bricked up and condemned
A subtle hint to move
Before the rats move in

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere
Those new kids at school seem cool
But dad says not to talk to them
Stick to your old friends
They're not our kind
So now there's lots of fights

So many people I know
Come of age tense and bitter-eyed
Can't create so they just destroy
C'mon!
Let's set someone's dog on fire

Empty plastic
Culture slum suburbia
Is a war zone now
Sprouting the kinds of gangs
We thought we'd left behind

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere

Kids at school are taking sides
Along color and uniform lines
My dad's gone and bought a gun
He says he's fed up
With crime in this town

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere
This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere

Anywhere
Everywhere

I hope I'm gone before it explodes

I linger late at night
Waiting for the bus
No amount of neon jazz
Could hide the oozing vibes of death

My dad's a vigilante now
He's bringing home these weird-ass friends
Like the guy who fires blanks at his TV
When Kojak's on

Or the guy who shows off his submachine gun
To his sixteen-year-old daughter's friends
Whose sense of pride and hope
Is being in the police reserve

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere-Everywhere

(or not, it doesn't matter.)

a majority of Republicans believe ACORN "stole" the election for Obama nationally.

52%.

Imagine how that collection of images comes together in the deep south mentallity.

Now add that statistic to that highway poster...

It is within the realm of possibility that ACORN stole enough votes to put Franken close enough that extra vote-stealing steps by the Democratic machine in MN could put him over the top.

But the national election? That was a solid Obama win. By the time November came around, the economy was tanking and a Democrat win had become inevitable. ACORN had become irrelevant. Take away whatever cheating they managed, and Obama maybe slips by two electoral votes. Or maybe none at all. ACORN doesn't command legions of phony voters. Just battalions, and not that many of those. On top of that, a good fraction of however many fake voters ACORN can put in play don't vote in swing districts. Most districts are sewed up tight for one party or the other.

How can anything approaching just 5%, let alone 52%, of Republicans believe that ACORN cost them the win? It seems improbable. Do remember, 83.22745% of all statistics are made up and pretend to ridiculous levels of precision.

Stupid and irresponsible. I hope the county committee receives some consequences from the state party.

Personally, I'd like to see it go farther, with the national GOP making it clear that despite any policy disagreements they have with President Obama, billboards like these are unacceptable and should be condemned no matter the source. If that first sign was put up by part of the Missouri state GOP, then threaten to withhold national funds until a formal apology is issued and the sign taken down, or something.

I know that I pushed back against the "Bush=Hitler" memes that went around my fellow liberals for eight years, and I didn't even like the guy. I had many screaming matches and flame wars over that idiocy because I thought it was out of line. I can guess that many of the more sane Republicans feel much the same way when they see signs like these directed at Obama, no matter how they may feel about his presidency so far.

I'd like to think that there are reasonable people on both sides that can come to some sort of agreement. Fringe nonsense like this just adds nothing to the discussion and poisons the political environment, which is counterproductive. There are real issues to debate and real problems to solve. Yammering about revolution or birth certificates? Not helping. =P

For what it's worth, I'd point out that although the South has acquired an unpleasant reputation for being racist and backward in certain areas, it's only fair to remember that Chicago under Daley produced some of the nastier moments of white racism when MLK went there, and had some of the most deliberately segregated areas, despite federal directives ordering integration. Equally, some of the vilest parts of the militia movement have been in Michigan and Oregon. That said, it is fair comment that the GOP, which has generally refused to condemn such extremists, is now concentrated in the South, and seems increasingly to be dictated to by Southern activists of various stripes. It's not completely surprising that people now associate extremism with the South, even though the actual picture is rather more complicated. For me, the saddest aspect of GOP dominance of the South is that it has done the South very little good. Look at which states have the poorest records on health, education, and poverty. You'll find that the South consistently has the worst performers in these areas - Alabama and Mississippi come to mind.

I have to say that its signs like this that make me glad I am Canadian. Don't get me wrong, most days I wish Canada were more like the US (well at least the 2 coasts of the US) but crap like this just makes me shake my head. Good luck with these guys.

I can't disagree with anything you've said.

The only point I've tried to make is this . . . in a post where the incidents described occurred in Missouri, Colorado and Michigan - for someone to come in and make a comment about the "deep south" mentality of the folks behind the incidents is just - ludicrous.

At the rate the GOP is going, it will likely eat itself alive while is slowly starves to death. This will take some time, but the loonier it becomes, the more people will splinter away. In the meantime, do your best to help propel its destruction. A gesture of humanitarian aid, if you will.

I basically agree with you, although given that Senator Voinovich (a Republican) also blamed the GOP's problems on the south, I can't say that it's just liberals who see the south as being to blame. Nor can we deny that the south has produced some very unpleasant groups and individuals. Overall, I think it's past time that as a society we stopped classing things as simplistically liberal/conservative, southern/northern etc, and simply asked: does a given policy convey tangible benefits to the American people, and is it compatible with being a good citizen?
