Glenn Beck’s Racist Friends

Weird • Views: 3,221

If you want to know if someone’s blowing a dog whistle, ask the dogs.

Beck insists his critics are imagining things, that he does not engage in racial fear-mongering, that a string of guests with ties to hate groups do not form a meaningful pattern, and that he’s not a racist. It occurred to me the other day that if you really want to know whether Beck and his guests are blowing racial dog-whistles, it’s best to ask a dog.

I decided to reach out to Don Black, the avowed white nationalist who runs the Web site Stormfront.org, the country’s leading “Discussion board for pro-White activists and anyone else interested in White survival.” But Black hung up on me. I next tried to get in touch with David Duke, the former gubernatorial candidate and current head of the European American Unity and Rights Organization. Duke, too, had little interest in talking to me, likely because of my past association with the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks the activities of white supremacist groups.

Unable to get through to the highest-profile spokesmen of the racist grass roots, I took a page from the other side and trawled their Web sites for insight. I scanned Davidduke.com and Stormfront.org to see what they had to say, if anything, about Beck. Admittedly, this method is not scientific, and certainly folks on the left don’t like it when righties cherry-pick an extreme comment from Daily Kos or the Huffington Post and pretend the whole site can be summed up by such extremism.

On the other hand, Stormfront.org isn’t a media organization but a self-described discussion board. And when it comes to Beck, the discussions are fairly positive. On both David Duke’s Web site and Stormfront, Beck’s July 28 claim that President Obama harbors a “deep-seated hatred of white people, or the white culture” was met with attention and appreciation.

Duke was heartened by the discussion it generated, and placed it in a larger context. “A lot of stuff is happening in the world of race relations and little of it points towards a post-racial society,” Duke noted. “Beck is steadily losing advertisers, but his viewers seem to be sticking with him … White desperation is manifesting itself in various forms.”

Beck’s charge that the president hates white people sparked a more expansive discussion at Stormfront.org. Some participants saw Beck as an important ally in the White Nationalist cause. Others were skeptical, viewing him as a clueless conservative version of Lenin’s “useful idiot.” But some of Stormfront’s most active members generally agreed that, whether he was fully conscious or not, Beck was nudging his audience toward an embrace of racial consciousness.

do you deny the reason that those idiots you refer to are listening to Beck?...as for Charles, he lays it all out for his readers and critics alike, whether he is upset or not is not the point...how could he be more fair?

The author, above, points this out directly. He then goes on to quote David Duke himself supporting the comments mentioned.

Also, when support of Beck is as widespread as it is at sites such as Stormfront, it tells you something about Beck and the audience he's appealing to.

10 Salo  Mon, Nov 23, 2009 6:49:05am

I'm more concerned about the President's friends: Obama has the power of the entire federal government, Beck is an entertainer.

Actually, Charles has done nothing other than to link to a Salon article. As for over the top/racist remarks, he deletes those when he either sees them or they are brought to his attention. He then either warns the individual, or if they have been a frequent abuser who hasn't gotten the clue that he doesn't like that sort of crap, he bans them.

Nice first post by the way.

Nirther Brit making the news...

The former British police officer who wants to bring down Barack Obama

Neil Sankey has spent his life investigating organised crimes. As a former British police officer with almost 20 years experience, he was seconded to elite units of Scotland Yard through most of the 1970s and now runs his own private detective agency in California.

Over the years he has been involved in some big investigations. As part of the Special Branch and Bomb Squad he monitored British leftwing groups and the IRA, and in America his clients have included several big car companies.

But never has he handled anything quite as monumental as the investigation that is absorbing his energies today.

Sankey is pursuing what he believes to be fraud on a gigantic scale — a conspiracy, no less, to infiltrate and destroy the free world by putting a foreign imposter into the White House.

Sankey is a member of the fringe alliance known widely as the Birthers (he dislikes the expression, considering it pejorative). Together with other activists, he seeks to prove that Barack Obama is not a true American and is therefore ineligible to be president.

14 Andrew Brehm  Mon, Nov 23, 2009 6:52:33am

According to the Salon article, the Stormfront folks think that Glenn Beck is talking about the right subjects but rate him as "not a White Nationalist" and subject to the control of the "Zionist Occupied Government".

Seems to me that Glenn Beck, however wrong he might be, is certainly no friend of the Stormfront crowd.

I myself find it more interesting to learn more about this Zionist Occupied Government they speak of. Does this mean that the US government will shortly take a strong stance against segregation and for Jewish "settlements" just like Israel wants? I am still wishing that Stormfront's nightmare becomes reality.

There's a reason it's a pejorative; it's a conspiracy theory with no facts to actually support it. Heck, the South Park election episode is frankly more reasonable than this (where the election was a cover for an Ocean's 11 caper).

Some people can't stand the idea of a black man sitting in the WH so they are trying to find any conspiracy theory, no matter how wacky, to get him removed. I thought our country would be much farther ahead in this department then the 60s and 70s. I thought wrong.

Heck, you see fans that miss the entire game because they're sitting with their heads tilted back and those little shiny reflector things under their chins.

According to the source, the U.S. has offered the Taliban control of the Kandahar, Helmand, Oruzgan, Kunar and Nuristan provinces in return for a halt to the Taliban missile attacks on U.S. bases.

Charlie Baker has a pretty good shot at winning too. Deval Patrick has worn out his welcome, but he does have Obama and Axelrod behind him, so they might try to use Tisei's sexuality against him like Kerry tried with Dick Cheney's daughter. There is no level to which those two will not stoop.

Morning all! I know absolutely nothing about football. Ya wanna know why I say that? Quite simple actually - I've been a thirty-plus year fan of the San Diego Chargers.

They always seem to let me down in the end, but by golly they're sure exciting to watch!!

Don't feel bad, you could be a colts fan. Every year they give us a great season then get beat by a crappy chargers team in the playoffs. I was really rooting for Denver yesterday.

re: #74 soxfan4life

I meant from other teams. A couple years ago everyone was after Jason Garrett, now all the talk has quieted down. As for Wade Phillips, he is definitely a reason for not making the SuperBowl. Sometimes it sucks to sit in the big chair. The Cowboys actually have a decent chance in the NFC, the game against New Orleans will tell alot about them.

I disagree about Phillips and offer Tom Coughlin as an object lesson in coaching techniques...anyway the Cowboys have always been streaky and I mean for over 40yrs that I've watched them...that's a given, just like penalties, they are always at the top of the league in numbers, last year they led the league again...but when the Cowboys are healthy and get hot, they are a very difficult team to beat

Interesting. With Kerry it was a subtle stick in the eye of Bush/Cheney's base, yes? How do you think using his sexual orientation against play out in a place like Mass, it's common knowledge the fellow is gay, isn't it? Here in Ohio, it would be an effective club, in Mass. I would think it would backfire with a vengeance.

Unfortunately, Beck has an audience far larger than can be accounted for by white supremacists and racists. IIRC correctly, approx. 3,000,000 for his TV show and approx. double that number for his radio show.
So if he is a racist, an awful lot of folks are watching/listening...and the question is, WHY?!

Really? What happens if KSM (and his codefendants) "do not get convicted," asked Senate Judiciary Committee member Herb Kohl. "Failure is not an option," replied Holder. Not an option? Doesn't the presumption of innocence, er, presume that prosecutorial failure -- acquittal, hung jury -- is an option? By undermining that presumption, Holder is undermining the fairness of the trial, the demonstration of which is the alleged rationale for putting on this show in the first place.

CK lays it out on the KSM trial

Moreover everyone knows that whatever the outcome of the trial, KSM will never walk free. He will spend the rest of his natural life in U.S. custody. Which makes the proceedings a farcical show trial from the very beginning.

Top Dem Threatens War Surtax if Obama Commits More Afghanistan Troops

The powerful chairman of the House Appropriations Committee has a stark message for President Obama about Afghanistan -- sending more troops would be a mistake that could "wipe out every initiative we have to rebuild our own economy."

"There ain't going to be no money for nothing if we pour it all into Afghanistan," House Appropriations Chairman David Obey told ABC News in an exclusive interview. "If they ask for an increased troop commitment in Afghanistan, I am going to ask them to pay for it."

Obey, a Democrat from Wisconsin, made it clear that he is absolutely opposed to sending any more U.S. troops to Afghanistan and says if Obama decides to do that, he'll demand a new tax -- what he calls a "war surtax" -- to pay for it.

Another tax? Color me surprised.

About 1% of our population if those ratings you cite are no exaggerated. A smaller percentage than the jailed population. Not even a big voter %. I think lots of them are there for the shock entertainment, and do not share his views. I still think Beck will crash on air and that will be that.

I think philosophus invidius nailed it here: "There are KKK racists and then there are just regular old nice-guy racists. They'd never attack a black person or burn a cross, but they're uncomfortable with a black man "over" them." What we've been seeing over the last 2 years/18 months is that there's many more in that category of 'regular old racist' than we ever thought. Look how many (now former) LGF members saw nothing wrong with that bone-in-the-nose photo, for example.

Lots of people touted Obama's election as the sign of a 'post-racial' society, but in truth it's been calling all the old racial resentments and hatreds out of the woodwork--hence the explosion in recruitment for white supremacist groups. And people being drawn to hatemongers like beck.

The final ingredient is-- the economy. There are a lot of frightened, angry people right now. The situation would have been volatile no matter who was elected. Racism is partly motivated by a need to feel superior and a need to assign blame--and there are large groups of people in search of those feelings right now.

So it's not just that diehard racists are being uncovered of late-- because we have a black POTUS, people are seizing on racism as a way of releasing and expressing their inchoate aggression, resentments and fear. And many scared people are watching Beck or others like him--anyone who promises an answer, a grand strategy-- and the racist dogwhistles are barely audible to them but are having a cumulative effect (In that situation, you can hear that 'the president has a deepseated hatred for white culture' only so many times before you'll start believing it.)

Hi NJDhockeyfan. Oh, it looks like they're just getting started. Here's another one:

Obamacare: Big State Tax Hikes

Both the House and the Senate bills require that states cover a larger percentage of their people under Medicaid -- a joint state and federally funded program. The idea was to force states to raise their taxes to cover a big part of the health care bill for treating poor people. Since the Feds can simply charge any increase in spending to their already overdrawn bank account, but the states have to balance their budgets, the increased state spending for Medicaid will cause sharp increases in state taxes. And the governors will get the blame, not Obama and not the Congress.

(Full disclosure - I find Dick Morris more than a little creepy, but he does know political maneuvering pretty well.)

112 lawhawk  Mon, Nov 23, 2009 8:10:15am

re: #111 subsailor68

The states in turn do that to municipalities all the time. It's all part of the unfunded mandates that everyone passes along to the taxpayer. Cities and towns have a limited capacity to impose tax hikes, and taxpayers who reach their breaking point on taxes will move to low tax burden locales.

So much of the health care bill is going to result in unfunded mandates that spread tax hikes around that the true costs are going to be far higher than any of its supporters will ever care to admit.

The story was written by Kevin Simpson with Michael Riley, Bruce Finley and Craig F. Walker. It was reported by Riley in Colorado and at Fort Benning, Ga., Finley at Fort Carson and in Iraq, and photographer Craig F. Walker throughout.

I just want Obama to make it through his term(s) in office safely. Sometimes I worry; it's hard not to when the secret service says threats have quadrupled.
I think that comment about white desperation is spot on. A lot of people are playing to that desperation. reminds me of that pat buchanan column about 'white america' and how we're 'losing our culture'. Lawyers Guns and Money had a good column about that:

In this case, I think that Buchanan is invoking a genuine sense of loss of entitlement on the part of a substantial portion of white America. This isn't to defend or justify the white privilege that created this entitlement entailed, or to justify Pat Buchanan's nostalgia for it. Nevertheless, I think that Buchanan is pointing to something that's very real, or at least as real as any sociological fact. White America, as the construct exists in the mind of many Americans, is disappearing, even by some objective criteria; it's retreating deeper into exurban communities, and it's very, very slowly ceding political and financial power. Moreover, the idea of America is changing; Buchanan has a very definite vision of what America is, and is smart enough to understand that his vision is losing traction. In this context, it's hardly surprising that the response is a combination of rage and raw panic. That the ideological structure that supports White America is racist and has a disturbing narrative of American history is academically relevant, but it's also not the central point. Those who hold Buchanan's vision (and many do, although often not in terms as explicit as Pat is willing to put forth) really do find themselves under siege, and pointing out that these beliefs are both crazy and immoral has very limited effect.

Good luck with that. States are currently facing absolutely huge shortfalls in revenue of their own, thanks to high unemployment and plummeting property taxes, not to mention loss of business tax revenue. And some of these shortfalls, like those related to declining property values, will be semi-permanent, taking years to recover to previous levels.

We need a racism richter scale. Something to account for a slip, like Don Imus, as compared to a day in day out race baiter, like David Duke or Jesse Jackson.

I know. It has become sad, that so many comments can be turned. Take Limbaugh, for example. What he said about Donovan McNabb wasn't even ABOUT McNabb. It was about the MEDIA fawning over McNabb, yet that comment got labeled as Lmbaugh excoriating McNabb for being a black QB

re: #120 Oh no...Sand People!

Well, it depends on how you want to calculate unemployment rate. The official rate is called U3, but it doesn't gather all the unemployed people because it excludes those whose unemployment benefits have ended, and those people who have quit searching. The full picture rate is the U6 rate.

So, for October 2009, the U3 rate is 9.5%, but the U6 rate is 16.3% (not seasonally adjusted) or 10/2% or 17.5% for seasonal adjustments.

I expect both rates to continue increasing into 2Q 2010, but some localities may see rates that exceed those numbers by a wide margin. That would occur regardless of any health care plan that Democrats ram through.

The health care plans would simply slow down the recovery further since job creation will now compete with new funding and taxing requirements on businesses, who will be less likely to create a new job if it puts additional costs on them to fund a job, particularly since many of the intended effects of the health care bill get phased in over a period of years; it's a way to hide the costs since you'll be taking in taxes and fees before expanding the benefits - a cushion that will be eaten away in short order as demand for services increases sharply.

Over 100 icebergs drifting to N.Zealand

More than 100, and possibly hundreds, of Antarctic icebergs are floating towards New Zealand in a rare event which has prompted a shipping warning, officials said on Monday.

An Australian Antarctic Division glaciologist said the ice chunks, spotted by satellite photography, had passed the Auckland Islands and were heading towards the main South Island, about 450 kilometres (280 miles) northeast.

Scientist Neal Young said more than 100 icebergs -- some measuring more than 200 metres (650 feet) across -- were seen in just one cluster, indicating there could be hundreds more.

I'm more concerned about the President's friends: Obama has the power of the entire federal government, Beck is an entertainer.

While Obama may well be pursuing policies that many of us disdain, I think it is fair to say that they are not founded in racism or hatred. He has a particular view of how to improve society as a whole. It is a more social democratic view than most of us here hold (and let me be clear, it is NOT socialism, but social democratic - they are different) and one which is deeply problematic in many areas in my view. However, I believe the president is honest in his intentions and we can engage in an honest fight over ideas.

Beck & Co are fear mongering with psuedo-racist statements, conspiracy-laced views, hyperbole about evil czars, death panels and oligarhy [sic]. The constant stream of "we must take our country back" implies that some outside force has come in and taken it when, in fact, that outside force was just the majority of Americans who voted for Obama (just as a majority voted for Bush in 2004). It's called democracy. If you don't like the government then vote them out but this notion of being the guardian of some "true" America is wrong and ultimately, as practiced by increasing groups on the far right, I believe dangerous.

Katherine Kersten: At U, future teachers may be reeducated

Do you believe in the American dream -- the idea that in this country, hardworking people of every race, color and creed can get ahead on their own merits? If so, that belief may soon bar you from getting a license to teach in Minnesota public schools -- at least if you plan to get your teaching degree at the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus.

In a report compiled last summer, the Race, Culture, Class and Gender Task Group at the U's College of Education and Human Development recommended that aspiring teachers there must repudiate the notion of "the American Dream" in order to obtain the recommendation for licensure required by the Minnesota Board of Teaching. Instead, teacher candidates must embrace -- and be prepared to teach our state's kids -- the task force's own vision of America as an oppressive hellhole: racist, sexist and homophobic.

This is disturbing.

Last week, Sarah Palin made a strange comment defending Israeli settlement construction by warning that “more and more Jewish people will be flocking to Israel in the days and weeks and months ahead.” Since worldwide Jewry is unaware of such an imminent threat that would prompt mass immigration to Israel — and certainly not immigration specific to the West Bank – that sounded like some kind of dogwhistle to Christian Zionists, a cohort that promotes unconditional American support to Israel in order to bring about the end of the world and the return of Jesus Christ to earth. Not, in other words, something particularly high on the Jewish or Israeli agendas, but Christian Zionists represent a pretty sizable bloc within the Republican coalition and could, say, help someone win a presidential nomination were someone so inclined.

Palin’s apparently eschatological comment doesn’t appear to be an accident.

How much new water will be added to the oceans of the earth?

The back of the envelope calculation shows that there is about 1,000 trillion gallons of water in this iceberg, but it's not "new." It's been in the hydrological cycle.

The iceberg contains sufficient water to provide 5 inches of water for the agricultural land of the earth or about 0.5 inches on the land area of the earth.

Israel, Hamas near swap of prisoners for soldier

Israel and Hamas are close to a deal to swap 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for an Israeli soldier held for more than three years by the Islamic militant group, a Palestinian familiar with the talks said Monday.

Israeli President Shimon Peres, who met with Egypt's president in Cairo Sunday, confirmed progress in the negotiations to free captured soldier Sgt. Gilad Schalit, but Israeli officials refused to comment further. Hamas' deputy political leader, Moussa Abu Marzouk, also said "there is progress" in the talks.

New FBI data show a sharp increase in anti-gay hate crimes.

Today, the FBI released its latest annual statistics on U.S. hate crimes in 2008. Overall, “the 2008 numbers are up slightly — 7,783 incidents and 9,691 victims” were reported last year. Hate crimes based on sexual orientation had the largest increase — nearly 11 percent. Hate crimes based on religion rose 9 percent and the “largest category, racially-motivated hate crimes, fell less than 1 percent.” A breakdown of the 1,706 victims of sexual-orientation hate crimes:

– 57.5 percent were victims of an offender’s anti-male homosexual bias.
– 27.3 percent were victims because of an anti-homosexual bias.
– 11.6 percent were victims because of an anti-female homosexual bias.
– 2.0 percent were victims because of an anti-heterosexual bias.
– 1.6 percent were victims because of an anti-bisexual bias.

Here's the FBI's report for those interested.

Israel, Hamas near swap of prisoners for soldier

Israel has history of uneven prisoner swap deals

Palestinians said Monday that negotiators were close to exchanging an Israeli soldier held by Gaza militants for 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. Israel has carried out such swaps in the past:

_June 2008: In exchange for the bodies of two Israeli soldiers, Israel frees a Lebanese convicted in a fatal 1979 apartment house attack, four other Lebanese prisoners, an undisclosed number of Palestinian prisoners and dozens of bodies of Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas.

_January 2004: In a deal with Hezbollah, Israel trades 436 Arab prisoners and the bodies of 59 Lebanese fighters for an Israeli civilian and the bodies of three Israeli soldiers.

_July 1996: Israel frees 65 prisoners for the return of the bodies of two soldiers from Lebanon.

_September 1991: Israel frees 51 prisoners for proof that one of its soldiers held in Lebanon is dead.

_May 1985: Israel swaps 1,150 Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners for three Israeli soldiers captured in Lebanon after Israel invaded in 1982. Criticism over the lopsided deal intensified after many of the freed prisoners played leading roles in a Palestinian uprising that began in 1987.

_November 1983: Israel swaps 4,600 Palestinian and Lebanese prisoners for six Israeli soldiers captured in Lebanon in September 1982.

"White desperation."

To give it a valid Marxist interpretation (there are such things, whether or not you're a Marxist), "white desperation" is the class struggle's ideal version of divide et impera - divide and conquer.

Convince the white lower classes to see their enemy in the brown lower classes, and vice versa, and you have a free hand to lord it over all of them.

Which is exactly what's been going on here since the Civil War.

But of course, there is no such thing as "class" in America. No empire, either.

The one is a category of logical fallacy, the other is a rhetorical tactic.

No.

Palin's theology calls for the Jews to all go to Israel, so they can be converted in the lead-up to the Second Coming.

She's of the Christian-Zionist persuasion. Christian Zionists are the worst friends Israel has. Their only use for the Jews is as bait for their apocolyptogasmic Armageddon.

Been there, seen that. I'll believe it when it actually happens.
BTW, I have concluded that Israel is making a huge mistake by continuing with this pattern of releasing hundreds of Arabs to secure one Israeli.
It encourages the Arabs to continue their kidnapping attempts and also gives them a low-cost way to secure the release of their fellow terrorists.

To snark, or not to snark: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to snark;
No more; and by a sarc tag to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That lizards are heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd.

/plagiarising myself, an old comment.

251 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Mon, Nov 23, 2009 9:32:39am

Actually I did learn a little something there Cato.

More recently, to beg the question has been used as a synonym for to raise the question, or to indicate that the question really ought to be addressed. This usage is commonly followed by a colon and the statement of the question. For example, "This year's budget deficit is half a trillion dollars. This begs the question: how are we ever going to balance the budget?"

Using the term in this way, although common, is considered incorrect by prescriptive grammarians. This usage is the result of confusion over the translation of petitio principii, which literally translates as "assuming the starting point".

Thank you.

If you plan on correcting my grammar or vocabulary at every incorrect usage, I do recommend that you also bring a comfy chair, a large lunch and a port-o-potty.

Ouch! This is gonna leave a mark.

BREAKING: San Diego ACORN Document Dump Scandal

On October 1st, 2009 California Attorney General Jerry Brown announced that an investigation had been opened into ACORN’s activities in California, resulting from undercover videos showing employees seemingly offering to assist the undercover film makers with human smuggling, child prostitution and even tax advice to boot.

Although ACORN has denied any wrongdoing, some of the employees involved were terminated, and ACORN has publicly stated that they would fully cooperate with any investigations that followed.

Interestingly, the local head ACORN organizer in California, David Lagstein was caught on tape earlier this month speaking to an East County Democratic Club.

Mr. Lagstein stated: “…the attorney general is a political animal, but certainly every bit of the communication we have had with them has suggested that the fault will be found with the people that did the video and not the people with ACORN.”

Continuing, Mr. Lagstein stated: “…we are fully cooperating, some of the investigators visited our office this morning and I think they really understand what’s going on.”

Shockingly, we now learn that the ACORN office in National City (San Diego County) engaged in a massive document dump on the evening of October 9th, containing thousands upon thousands of sensitive documents, just days prior to the Attorney General’s visit.

BigGovernment.com has learned that not only did this document dump occur, but the documents in question were irresponsibly and brazenly dumped in a public dumpster, without considering laws and regulations as to how sensitive information should be treated.

I am a local licensed private investigator. I took it upon myself to keep an eye on what the local ACORN office was up to, in light of the release of the undercover videos. I retrieved these documents from the public dumpster.

Documents shared with BigGovernment.com include information exposing not only the inner workings of ACORN in California, but also personal, sensitive information belonging to employees, members and clients of ACORN. ACORN and its few remaining defenders insist that the “good” ACORN provides outweighs the transgressions exposed in the recent undercover video sting. But, ACORN’s massive dumping of these documents and the cavalier manner in which it betrayed the trust of its supporters betrays that talking point. (Unlike ACORN, we have redacted sensitive and personal information.)

How does one incorrectly use tragedy?

From the "Calendar" thread last night:

OK, since it's late and I'm in a curmudgeonly mood, I'm going to flog a dead horse.

People really ought to stop misusing the word and concept of "tragedy".

If a wall falls on your great-grandmother, it is an accident, not a tragedy. It may be catastrophic for her and disastrous for her family (if she didn't leave a will), but a tragedy it is not.

If a dingo runs off with your baby, it is not a tragedy. It is your own damn fault for putting the baby where the dingo could reach it.

If a bomb goes off on a bus and kills 37 innocent people, it is not a tragedy. It is a crime, an act of terror, or both. Probably both.

9/11 was not a tragedy.

Hiroshima was not a tragedy.

The Holocaust was not a tragedy.

To be a tragedy, the person or people affected (killed, usually, but sometimes left alive to suffer indefinitely) have to have a tragic flaw that makes their suffering or death inevitable. Fated. Tragic.

To call it a tragedy in the case of the great-grandmother would mean she had a flaw that made her walk under unstable walls.

In that of the baby, the baby or the mother would have to be flawed in some way that made the dingo ineluctable.

The bomb on the bus can only be a tragedy if all the people on the bus were flawed for getting on the bus.

Same for 9/11.

Hiroshima - well, actually, I guess you could argue the point.

The Holocaust as tragedy presupposes that the Jews are somehow to blame, which is close to blasphemy.

Those misusing the word tragedy will henceforth be downdinged. As a matter of principle.

Examples:

Absolutely - helping a group because it will help your salvation if they are ultimately in the place where they will be destroyed is a little sick.

It's pretty much the antithesis of what we usually think of as Christian values-- treating others purely as means to our own ends and not as ends in themselves.*

For these particular EndTimes types, they believe that israel will be destroyed (must be destroyed to fulfill the end times prophecies) and all 'unperfected' Jews (i.e., those that don't ultimately accept Jesus Christ) are going to drown in the lake of fire (along with most of us). So it isn't just that they have the attitude "Oh, what a shame, Israel will have to be destroyed when Christ comes back" -- they endorse that destruction.

It's akin to the eliminationist antisemitism Daniel Goldhagen delineates in Hitler's Willing Executioners (and he also saw that form of antisemitism as encoded in certain forms of Christianity).
It shouldn't be treated lightly or dismissed. With friends like these who needs enemies?

Not for a moment did that person get into any trouble for dumpster diving or anything like that, even though he made a complete mess of the entire trash area. He even had to climb over a locked enclosure to get to the dumpsters in the first place. He was heralded as a hero for protecting privacy rights and the company had to deal with some very bad publicity and subsequently corrected its procedures, as it should. Moreover, this company was not trying to hide anything whatsoever, it was just sloppy in not shredding documents it was not required to keep any longer. We'll see here. I have no faith in government for the most part anyway. But really now, if sickeningly blatant corrupt organizations like Acorn which rely almost completely on taxpayer dollars to survive are still afloat after all of this, how can anyone seriously expect the same government to do anything right with our money, let alone efficiently? I'm going to laugh my butt off the next time I get some inane letter from a government agency telling me that my business is not in compliance with some idiotic law.

Long but true story:

My favorite personal involvement government run amok tale comes from an agency here in California called BEAR. (Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair). It basically exists solely to collect fines from companies not registered with them. You can go to the website for these jokers and see their "enforcement records" and outcomes. 99% of their "stings" as they put them are nothing more than collecting the yearly fees from companies they claim are under their jurisdiction. I have even spoken to them and they flat out admitted to me that most of the money pays for cubicle dwellers to scour the internet and yellow pages looking for businesses that sound as if they might fall under their jurisdiction and then make them comply with the yearly shakedown fee. I'm not joking. I got into it with one of them over the phone and they actually sent out a field officer to one of my old business addresses and called me asking where I was now located. The idiot demanded that I tell him where I was now located and I just laughed and told him to figure it out. Haven't heard from them since. The kicker? Their former head of the agency was forced to resign after it was discovered she was using taxpayer money to fly all over the place and even bought concert tickets for her daughter on taxpayer money. Some taxpayer watchdog she was!

Look at these morons and how they think they're like CIA agents:

That's Carrie Lopez, forced to resign for stealing taxpayer money. Thieveing little hypocritical bitch.

Or do worse and flood Gaza with goods so that all those corrupt bastards who are profiting off the tunnels and their fellow-Gazans desparation are ruined. The Israeli government's position on this is clear - they are happy to accept the political and moral support of the end-of-timers while at the same time rejecting the religious belief in question.
BTW, I am not at all conviced that it is the end-of-timers who are the ones pretending to like the Jews, since I understand their support for Israel to be quite genuine.
I was referring more to the wedge drivers as being the ones who are less than sincere in their expressions of concern for the Jews.

Exactly. And upding for the neologism apocolyptogasmic.

Or, maybe, she is referring to the fact that Israel has a growing population, about 2 million people in the last 15 years. And that expansion is necessary to sustain that growth rate.

But, if you want to attribute malevolence where simpler motivations are more likely, you go right ahead.

When all's said and done, Obama will be in a class by himself.

And regardless of the outcome of his Presidency, leaving politics aside, a well deserved and honored spot he will occupy in our History.

While disappointed with the lack of guidance and lackluster performance of this administration, President Obama was our choice and he has to succeed, failure is not our way.

Now, that said, lets get him out in 2012, before he gets really, really creative.

Speaking of the end, my dad is thinking of taking The Kid to see 2012 this week.

I just saw it...it's called, "New Moon". Well...for me it might as well have been the end..

Whoa, friendly fire!

Just stating my understanding of the law.

They should be shut down tight as far as I am concerned, they have no reason for existing other than sucking millions from taxpayers and causing havoc by overloading our social services with bogus claims.

Many of those 2 million were refugees of one sort or another seeking safe harbor. Is she implying that more Jews will need to flee to Israel? She was quoted as saying "flocking to" which colloquially would imply a positive migration.

Also, Israel has plenty of room for a growing population right now without expansion of settlements. That being said, I think an ultimate two-state solution yield Israel the two main east Jerusalem communities but does away with the vast majority of the remaining settlements and outposts.

I think any solution that tries to make East Jerusalem (including the Temple Mount) part of "Palestine" is a non-starter.

Yeah, just read this link from HuffPo

"Catherina Wojtowicz, of Chicago's Mount Greenwood community, an organizer for a Tea Party splinter group, Chicago Tea Party Patriots, falsely claimed that the Houghs fabricated their story. In an e-mail, she called them operatives of President Barack Obama who "go from event to event and (cry) the same story."

You linked to holocaust denier David Irving's website to make a point about Soros's (who is Jewish) alleged 'antisemitism'? I don't think that was a very good idea, Mandy.

re: #375 Cineaste

What? If sending your Army to invade another land isn't foreign policy, what exactly is it?

Crap

You know what Cineaste, I was not going to engage you, but you keep on pounding.
The Crusades were brutal, bad, vicious, shameful, insert your own adjective and/or sentence into your post I will agree.
BUT, your "invading foreign lands as foreign policy dictated by scriptures" is a misnomer.
Try RECONQUERING lands lost to invaders and we are halfway there.
You might counter with the obvious, which is that the invaders were the Crusaders as you have maintained.
Ok, now if I just were to go outside into my yard and found the Quarter Moon, I could hitch a ride on it, Westward.
What a wonderous land I am traveling, Gasp, the Everglades, Louisiana with the Missisippi emptying into the precious Gulf of Mexico, the Grand Canyon off to Starboard, but Nevadaaa, it has road runners, Yum, sidewinders, weird looking red sticks and cacti, water forever.
Voila, it is mine, all mine, I will be able to practice Santeria in this land forever and ever without even having set foot on this, my second holliest of baren ground, for I rode the moon with my eyes wide open and it is only populated by a bunch of infidels wearing funny glittery clothes.
Or if you choose to still follow your scripture dictating meme, go to the left side of LGF and under Resources, have at it.
I suggest you start with Nekama, it is powerful and concise.
Cheers.

I sold my copy of the Critique of Pure Reason for beer money.

I really did send a daughter to college with a "last ditch" hundred dollar bill glued into the end papers of Das Kapital. I figured it would be safely undisturbed on her bookshelf.

Cheap trick there, which doesn't prove much except that most people aren't going to sound like Winston Churchill if someone with a microphone suddenly appears in front of them.
I hope I don't need to point out how easy it would be to make a bunch of people voting for unspecified "hope and change" look like complete idiots, especially with a bit of selective editing.
