Across the pond:
Arrests are being made 'to expand DNA files'

Police are routinely arresting people simply to record their DNA profiles on the national database, according to a report published today.

It also states that three quarters of young black men are on the database. The finding risks stigmatising a whole section of society, the equality watchdog has warned.

The revelations will fuel the debate about the DNA database, the world’s largest. [snip]

Yikes, even the moonbat himself is jumping ship...

By George Monbiot, published in the Guardian, 23rd November 2009

It’s no use pretending that this isn’t a major blow. The emails extracted by a hacker from the climatic research unit at the University of East Anglia could scarcely be more damaging(1). I am now convinced that they are genuine, and I’m dismayed and deeply shaken by them.

Yes, the messages were obtained illegally. Yes, all of us say things in emails that would be excruciating if made public. Yes, some of the comments have been taken out of context. But there are some messages that require no spin to make them look bad. There appears to be evidence here of attempts to prevent scientific data from being released(2,3), and even to destroy material that was subject to a freedom of information request(4).

Worse still, some of the emails suggest efforts to prevent the publication of work by climate sceptics(5,6), or to keep it out of a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(7). I believe that the head of the unit, Phil Jones, should now resign. Some of the data discussed in the emails should be re-analysed.

The Knights Carbonic

No he is not becoming a sceptic, and he correctly states:

But do these revelations justify the sceptics’ claims that this is “the final nail in the coffin” of global warming theory?(8,9) Not at all. They damage the credibility of three or four scientists. They raise questions about the integrity of one or perhaps two out of several hundred lines of evidence. To bury manmade climate change, a far wider conspiracy would have to be revealed

However, seeing what I quoted eminating from George Monbiot in the Gruniad is quite a shock.

Good link. Didn't know about rkill.com Thanks for that.

I've encountered Antivirus Pro 2010 two or three times in the past month on laptops I've been asked to examine. Each time, there was a trojan found also, with a close match of date/time info to the rogue antivirus directories & files. Don't recall the name. I've found it useful to run mbam.exe (MalwareBytes Anti-malware) in safemode, with the full-scan option, at least once.

Spybot S&D is good too. Its immunize tool can help prevent re-infection by blocking lots of bad sites on the net (for IE & Firefox). Ditto for its hosts file option, regardless of what browser you use.

I had dental work done yesterday, and the pain killer always wires me, I can't sleep. Even though opiates are a depressant, it's not an unusual reaction for them to wire some people.

Fucking Commies in both the House and the Senate want a graduated income tax--in addition to the regular one--to pay for Afghanistan, with those earning about $200,000.00 paying five per cent as well as some murky additional surcharge.

Progressive income taxes already exist in most capitalist jurisdictions around the world. IIRC the income tax originally started as a war tax (US civil war; WWI for Canada), which the pols simply kept on the books after WWII IIRC.

re: #85 MandyManners

Back to camp for you, comrade, for thinking you have an opinion. When Dear Leader wants your opinion, he will give you one.

Speaking of the state trashing your opinion and forcing one down your throat, NJDhockeyfan found a gem yesterday.

Do you believe in the American dream -- the idea that in this country, hardworking people of every race, color and creed can get ahead on their own merits? If so, that belief may soon bar you from getting a license to teach in Minnesota public schools -- at least if you plan to get your teaching degree at the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus.

In a report compiled last summer, the Race, Culture, Class and Gender Task Group at the U's College of Education and Human Development recommended that aspiring teachers there must repudiate the notion of "the American Dream" in order to obtain the recommendation for licensure required by the Minnesota Board of Teaching. Instead, teacher candidates must embrace -- and be prepared to teach our state's kids -- the task force's own vision of America as an oppressive hellhole: racist, sexist and homophobic.

SNIP

The report advocates making race, class and gender politics the "overarching framework" for all teaching courses at the U. It calls for evaluating future teachers in both coursework and practice teaching based on their willingness to fall into ideological lockstep.

The first step toward "cultural competence," says the task group, is for future teachers to recognize -- and confess -- their own bigotry. Anyone familiar with the reeducation camps of China's Cultural Revolution will recognize the modus operandi.

The task group recommends, for example, that prospective teachers be required to prepare an "autoethnography" report. They must describe their own prejudices and stereotypes, question their "cultural" motives for wishing to become teachers, and take a "cultural intelligence" assessment designed to ferret out their latent racism, classism and other "isms." They "earn points" for "demonstrating the ability to be self-critical."

The task group opens its report with a model for officially approved confessional statements: "As an Anglo teacher, I struggle to quiet voices from my own farm family, echoing as always from some unstated standard. ... How can we untangle our own deeply entrenched assumptions?"

The goal of these exercises, in the task group's words, is to ensure that "future teachers will be able to discuss their own histories and current thinking drawing on notions of white privilege, hegemonic masculinity, heteronormativity, and internalized oppression."

Future teachers must also recognize and denounce the fundamental injustices at the heart of American society, says the task group. From a historical perspective, they must "understand that ... many groups are typically not included" within America's "celebrated cultural identity," and that "such exclusion is frequently a result of dissimilarities in power and influence." In particular, aspiring teachers must be able "to explain how institutional racism works in schools."

Last paragraphs:

What if some aspiring teachers resist this effort at thought control and object to parroting back an ideological line as a condition of future employment? The task group has Orwellian plans for such rebels: The U, it says, must "develop clear steps and procedures for working with non-performing students, including a remediation plan."

And what if students' ideological purity is tainted once they begin to do practice teaching in the public schools? The task group frames the danger this way: "How can we be sure that teaching supervisors are themselves developed and equipped in cultural competence outcomes in order to supervise beginning teachers around issues of race, class, culture, and gender?"

Its answer? "Requir[e] training/workshop for all supervisors. Perhaps a training session disguised as a thank you/recognition ceremony/reception at the beginning of the year?"

Last August my wife bought a 42" plasma TV for the bedroom since she was looking at some bed rest due to two knee operations. She wanted to enjoy the NFL in some style and comfort.

All went well until Sunday, when the TV suddenly didn't recognize that it was hooked up to the Dish network anymore. I unplugged it for a half-hour and plugged it in again but no joy. I called tech support and they ran through some items and concluded that the coax input had gone bad. Out of warranty, so it wasn't going to be repaired free, and they recommended that we take it to a local shop for repair.

I was a bit miffed, and hooked the old (25 year old) RCA unit and put the plasma screen in the computer room until we could locate a repair shop. While waiting, I decided to pull the back off the unit and see if I could remove the coax input and replace it myself. The unit was soldered to the motherboard (maybe not, but that was what I'd have said had it been a computer) and I didn't feel competent to take it apart myself. I put the back of the unit back on and on a whim hooked it to the coax input in the computer room and, Shazam, it worked.

Now, for years I've become used to the idea that computers can be repaired by removing the offending part, reinstalling the part and in a distressing number of cases that will fix the problem. I was a bit surprised to find that you can fix flat-screen TVs that way, too.

Who are these people? Elected officials or, ivy-tower Communists?

The task group is part of the Teacher Education Redesign Initiative, a multiyear project to change the way future teachers are trained at the U's flagship campus. The initiative is premised, in part, on the conviction that Minnesota teachers' lack of "cultural competence" contributes to the poor academic performance of the state's minority students. Last spring, it charged the task group with coming up with recommendations to change this. In January, planners will review the recommendations and decide how to proceed.

Big plans for Thanksgiving?

We had none. Just the wife, myself, and the daughter. Quiet dinner and then mouldering on the couch.

Then I invited my sister, her husband, and her son. Accepted. My other two brothers heard and decided they would come with another nephew. Now nine for dinner. A neighbor mentioned that they had nowhere to go, so the wife invited him, his wife, and her father. Up to twelve. The daughter took pity on a co-worker who was far from home and faced with the prospect of the first holiday without her extended family, so she invited this lady, her husband and their two-year-old child. Fifteen attendees now.

One thing lead to another and now we have twenty-two people who have accepted invitations to Thanksgiving dinner.

Next year, we're having Thanksgiving at an undisclosed location, guarded by Blackwater operatives.

Consumer protection. Which I don't necessarily disagree with in this situation. Customers will purchase something with delayed pain, only to have the pain delivered a year later.

For example... 20,000 remodel job... no payments for a year/no interest.

The interest, however accrues... bill isn't paid off? 3000.00 in interest immediately is added to the account.

My customers who can afford to pay the job off within a year without interest can afford to make minimum monthly payments and then send the balance before the year is up, avoiding those interest fees.

My customers who can not afford to pay the job off within a year receives no real benefit from this and gets killed with interest.

I do know some of the cc companies are cutting their noses to spite their faces. Miss a payment by a day or two and the increase the interest rate to way beyond reasonable. I had this happen. Promptly paid the balance and cut it up. Most people can't do that and their balance increases to the point of bankrkuptcy.

Hubby says it works to their benefit because of gubernet bailouts for the banks. I'd think they would want to keep customers, but I guess that isn't necessary to turn a profit these days.

I don't understand these things, I guess.

KSM show trial...

That's where we find our answer. The KSM show trial is not aimed at terrorists, or at an international audience. It's aimed, in the classic sense, at domestic enemies. Holder has been transparently eager to prosecute Bush officials involved in "torture" but was evidently told to low-key the effort -- little has been heard of it since the first announcement last Spring. But here he has a workable substitute.

JR Dunn at Am Thinker...the explanation you won't get from Holder

So, this is the back-door option.

So, the government is forcing people to pay to a private business, is inserting itself into a contract.

I got a letter a couple of weeks ago from my credit card company saying that they are raising their interest rates. If I wanted to opt out of this change, they would cancel my card at the end of the year. Since I always pay my balance in full, this won't effect me. But it took a phone call to them to make sure it wouldn't.

Professor Phil Jones, the head of the Climate Research Unit, and professor Michael E. Mann at Pennsylvania State University, who has been an important scientist in the climate debate, have come under particular scrutiny. Among his e-mails, Mr. Jones talked to Mr. Mann about the "trick of adding in the real temps to each series ... to hide the decline [in temperature]."

What if the boy scouts decided to volunteer to do your job? And your boss said "hey that's a great idea, we don't need you any more" and fired you. Would you complain or would you just bless those cheeky boy scouts and your great employer for supporting volunteer work?

A volunteer might come in and do my job for a day or two, but could not do it for 30 years, as I did.

Same with these SEIU employees - this was one job, and he saw a need and did the job voluntarily. The SEIU employees still have a job, don't they? This is one task he did that did not go to them.

Now that I've answered your question, which came after my questions that you ignored, would you do me the courtesy, plesae of answering my questions:

Why is that a bad thing, Locker?
Why is it a bad thing that a boy scout spent 200 volunteer hours of his own time to clear that path for the citizens of the town?
Why is volunteerism a bad thing?
Why would anyone want to create a financially sapping grievance process for this volunteer to have to respond to?

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Two terror related stories this morning:

1) 9/11 terrorists want to represent themselves at trial. President Obama, you own this circus. This was your decision, and you're going to have to live with the repercussions of putting it into civilian courts and not the tribunals that you have no problem using for other terrorists in detention.

2) Maj. Hasan's lawyer is contemplating an insanity defense. It's what lawyers are supposed to do, but don't expect it to work.

I don't understand how any NYC trial verdict can stand. NYC is so impacted by terrorist acts it seems logical to me that a guilty verdict can easily be overturned by claiming a fair trial can't be obtained 'IN' New York City. I'm recalling the Rodney King trial and reason for moving it to Simi Valley.

Must be I don't have a clear understanding of this situation.

The terrorists' lawyers (if they still have 'em by the time trial starts, because they could try and defend themselves as is their right), could file a motion to change venue, but such a venue change is likely to be rebuffed because there isn't anyplace in the country that wasn't affected by the terror attacks, and certainly not in the NYC metro area - an area pretty much stretching from Boston (where two of the flights originated) to DC - and as far west as the Poconos (where some travel into NYC for work). I just don't see a venue change happening. I do see a huge circus though.

Now that the Administration made the decision to try them in federal court, the SDNY is the appropriate venue. Lots of terror trial experience and the facilities to hold and secure the terrorists during the trial, along with the largest police force in the nation to deal with any possible threats.

Thank you.

The grievance against the city will necessarily NAME the boy scout who did the work. The boy scout is involved in the grievance, regardless of WHO the grievance is actually filed with, and would probably be required to come in and make a statement of some sort during the grievance process, if for nothing else to support the city's decision. I misstated the original point; however, it is NOT a stretch to say the boy scout would be involved.

If their lawyer is a Lynne Stewart wannabe and shares this information with their client regardless of whatever agreements and protections are in place, yes.
If the juror protections that should be in place aren't, yes.

I just don't know what kind of protections the court will put in place under the circumstances.

Another reason why this is a very bad idea. Would the average juror be intimidated by this?

He's been out in the cold and wet for God only knows how long, and his fur is a real mess all over. More than he should have to clean himself. Yeah next time there's about 6 conservatives piling on one liberal I should refrain from thuggishly defending him and thereby inflicting unfair pain and suffering on the pooh widdle conservatives!

Conservative victimhood is a growing business. In this as in most things LGF is a microcosm of the political climate overall.

After years of telling women, African-Americans, Hispanics, gays, lesbians, the disabled and others to “get over it”, conservatives finally decided they would develop their own narrative of victimization. In recent years, we have heard that white men are an endangered species, that Christians are an embattled and widely persecuted group in the United States, and that conservatives face discrimination of their own, for instance, in academia. The latest episode in this unreality series is the assertion that there is a “War on Christmas”.

Another example: Saint Sarah the Martyr of Wasilla has nothing to offer but her status as Our Lady of Perpetual Martyrdom.

Michelle Obama PHOTO: Google Buys Ad To Explain Offensive Image (IMAGE)

Google has purchased online ads in an effort to explain to users why an offensive image of Michelle Obama is appearing, and is ranked so highly, in its Google Image search results.

The Google ad, titled "Offensive Search Results," appears directly over the pictures of the First Lady that show up when users perform a Google Image search for "Michelle Obama." (see the screenshot below).

Google's advertisement reads, "Sometimes our search results can be offensive. We agree." It then continues with a longer explanation (read the full text here) on why certain search results appear, and why they may be highly ranked.

Obama plans to send 34,000 more troops to Afghanistan

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama met Monday evening with his national security team to finalize a plan to dispatch some 34,000 additional U.S. troops over the next year to what he's called "a war of necessity" in Afghanistan, U.S. officials told McClatchy.

Obama is expected to announce his long-awaited decision on Dec. 1, followed by meetings on Capitol Hill aimed at winning congressional support amid opposition by some Democrats who are worried about the strain on the U.S. Treasury and whether Afghanistan has become a quagmire, the officials said.

Prediction: this won't stop the usual suspects from claiming that Obama is weak on defense and somehow isn't supporting the war enough.

That's standard here. There's a doublestandard for how liberals and conservatives are expected to act, for some commentators. So a single articulate liberal poster will be accused of 'bullying' -- when they're subject to several people piling on them and insulting them, etc. You get used to it!

It took him how many months to arrive at that decision during which time additional attacks occurred and the dithering was seen as a sign of weakness?

Sorry, but "thoughtful decision" can be seen as dithering and weakness when viewed from afar - and the Taliban were sure going to use the opportunity to press their attacks and see what the Obama Administration would do.

I'm glad that the Administration is finally making that decision, and bolstering the forces in Afghanistan will help stabilize matters. The Pakistani government is pressing the fight into the frontier provinces which means that the Taliban will come streaming back into Afghanistan.

It's a hammer/anvil strategy, and without the forces to act as the anvil, the hammer will not do nearly enough. It will merely drive the Taliban into the mountains to regroup. A surge is necessary to disrupt that flow and to stabilize the major population centers.

Moreover, the additional US troops are necessary because our NATO allies are incapable of sending more troops of their own; their military forces are incapable of sending reinforcements and don't have the logistics to make it happen either. They've allowed their military capabilities to decline precipitously, and that's leaving the US holding the bag. Add to that the fact that the European governments aren't nearly as willing to send their forces on offensive operations means that going after terrorists is increasingly a US-only operation in Afghanistan.

Obama spent time meeting with many advisors and clearly was going to delay any decision until after Nov 7th in any case pending the outcomes of the elections. Conservative commentators bitched about the delay, with one even suggesting that it more important to act quickly rather than to make the right decision (!).
i don't have any problem with the POTUS taking the time to consider options there. Fact is it's a clusterfuck and it's hard to see what good ANY strategy will do.

In the time I've been here the people I've seen banned all earned and deserved their bannings. The rules are pretty obvious: don't be an asshole. Assholeishness is bipartisan, even if we'd like to pretend otherwise in the heat of partisan battle.

re: #453 iceweasel

Sorry, but I've got to strenuously disagree with you. The delay added time and space for the Taliban and al Qaeda to operate. The whole object of the Afghan campaign is to deny them that opportunity, and the delays work against that strategy.

The strategy being devised is the same basic options provided at the outset of the decision making process. It's to add troops, nearly the full amount requested by Gen. McCrystal. That's a decision that could have been made three months ago when first presented. The delay, which you note was to reflect the election outcome, was unwarranted.

Here's why the delay was unwarranted. We were going to send more troops to stabilize regardless of who won the election. We needed to send the troops to improve security and stabilize the border situation with Pakistan.

Now, we've got Democrats complaining about the cost of the Afghan campaign and the impending cost of the surge. I find it comical that they're worried about the cost of the Afghan campaign, which is the "good war" in their eyes that needs to be fought, when they're busy tripling the national deficit in a single year with spending on programs of dubious value except as pork (see also Sen. Levin's call for yet another tax to fund the Afghan war).

The Democrats just aren't serious about the national security implications of the Afghan campaign, and are just as likely to cut and run at the first sign of real trouble. Even Obama's call to increase troops includes several outs - allowing the troop increase to be curtailed if certain events don't occur.

The administration's plan contains "off-ramps," points starting next June at which Obama could decide to continue the flow of troops, halt the deployments and adopt a more limited strategy or "begin looking very quickly at exiting" the country, depending on political and military progress, one defense official said.

"We have to start showing progress within six months on the political side or military side or that's it," the U.S. defense official said.

So, even with the 34,000 troop increase, they could send 5,000 troops and decide in 6 months time that it isn't worth it and never bother to send the rest, and bring 'em all home.

It's actually a way for the Administration to show that it's tough on terrorism without actually being tough.

In the time I've been here the people I've seen banned all earned and deserved their bannings. The rules are pretty obvious: don't be an asshole. Assholeishness is bipartisan, even if we'd like to pretend otherwise in the heat of partisan battle.

Freak Republic and DU show what happens without moderation, as does a long unmoderated comment thread virtually anywhere, on any topic. Assholes take over.

FR is moderated, or at least it used to be. The problem is that the moderators went batshit along with the rest of the site.

And this is exactly the kind of reaction I predicted when I posted the news: regardless of what Obama has done (agreed to send quite literally as many troops as possible) conservatives were still going to take it as a sign that he isn't serious 'enough' about defense. You're even looking ahead to a hypothetical situation in which he doesn't increase troops, and speculating already that it would be done for bad motives: 'cutting and running at the first sign of trouble'. (!!)

There's a good reason to do it incrementally: to respond to changing conditions on the ground and other threats elsewhere. If that happens, some people will surely label it 'cutting and running', just as they'll complain that this troop increase isn't 'enough'.

Philippines declares emergency after 46 killed

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

The Philippine president placed two southern provinces under emergency rule Tuesday as security forces unearthed more bodies from one of the worst incidents of election violence in the nation's history, pushing the death toll to 46.

Police and soldiers found 22 bodies in a hillside mass grave Tuesday, adding to the 24 bullet-riddled bodies recovered near the scene of Monday's massacre in Maguindanao province, said Chief Superintendent Josefino Cataluna of the Central Mindanao region.

This southern region of the Philippines is wracked by violent political rivalries, in addition to a long-running Islamic insurgency, but the killings have shocked this Southeast Asian nation. One adviser to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has described the massacre as the worst in the country's recent history. A media rights watchdog also says that it appears to be the world's worst mass killing of journalists, with as many as 23 feared dead.

Bathing a kitten with sharp claws is doubleplus un-fun. If the little thing will tolerate it, I'd recommend a little trim first --about a millimeter or two from the tip of each claw. It is very important to avoid trimming too much. I've been able to use a normal human nail clipper or a wire cutter. Of course, it must be oriented differently for a claw.

You want to pick and choose what I wrote there. Obama gets to have his cake and eat it too - he can claim he's going to send 34,000 troops, but he's going to do it in the worst possible way - by sending troops a bit at a time, and if he doesn't like the results after six months he can pull the plug on the whole thing.

The incremental approach is precisely the wrong tactic because it allows the terrorists - Taliban and al Qaeda to prepare the battlefield for the increases, rather than taking the initiative away from them.

Heck, you don't think that the Taliban is reading the papers and seeing how the President operates? If the Taliban strike hard and fast during the runup, what lesson do you think President Obama is going to learn from it? That we need to send more troops or send fewer? Based on the comments from his fellow Democrats, I'm going to go with sending fewer troops or cutting and running. I hope I'm wrong on that, but when you have Democrats braying about needing to end the war and bitching about the cost, what other lesson are you going to take away?

if it was simple it would have been done by now.

the military is exhausted - both the British and American ones.

There probbaly are not 40,000 battle ready troops ready to deploy this very second without cutting rotation breaks again, or extending tours or myriad other complications that would involve rotating people through quicker and quicker.

If the troops are availbale only incrementally - they can only be deployed incrementally - if he waits for the number to be ready at one time people will be all over him for doing nothing at all in terms of troop numbers.

Thing about our forces is that they are sorta kinda like heavy cavalry combined with heavy infantry. They can inflict enormous punishment on the enemy, but can't keep it up indefinitely, as our way of warfare is very taxing on men and equipment. In these cases, you've gotta leverage what we've got - small numbers of highly mobile, outrageously powerful units - to your best advantage.

Quick strikes, in overwhelming force, seem to be the best tactics. Strategically, the goal ought to be to cripple and degrade the main body of the enemy forces. We need to encourage them to hunker down for fear of lightning strikes, and then flatten them when, gathered together for protection from raiding units, they present huge targets for air power and such.

It can be done, but dribs and drabs won't work because we don't have a limitless supply of troops, nor do we have an unlimited time horizon. We've got qualitatively superior forces with relatively limited endurance. The enemy knows that, and so they fight to take advantage of our limitations (hence their attrition strategies of bombings and ambushes. Anything to prolong time in combat degrades our fighting ability.)

Taking care of kitteh:
If it's really a kitten, not a young cat, you can bathe it without much problem.

A tub of warm shallow water, so he can touch bottom and doesn't feel like he has to swim.
He won't like it and will try to get out, but he'll be so busy trying to get out he won't scratch you, probably.

Toss a towel into the dryer and let it warm up before using it to dry the kitteh off. Wrap him up good in that warm towel.

Litter: in a pinch, some shredded newspaper will work in lieu of kitty litter.

Food: if you have a bit of tuna and he's hungry now, offer him a little of the tuna. If you get dry cat food and he doesn't seem to like it, put a little water in to make a mush until he gets used to the dry food.

Indeed. Both of Hannibal's brother tried to lead reinforcing armies to Italy. The middle brother, Hasdrubal, did make it a fair ways into Roman territory. Then a local guide tricked him into camping his army in broken ground (where the Carthaginian cavalry was useless) against the unfordable Metarus River. The Romans trapped Hasdrubal's force and destroyed it (though Hasdrubal's clever tactics made it a near-run thing). Hasdrubal was killed and the Romans flung his severed head into Hannibal's camp.

Then look at the comment box you get - in the upper left corner, there is a box, "Return after posting reply". If that box is checked, then once you post your reply you will automatically be returned to the place in the thread where you were when you posted the comment (you won't have to go looking to see where you were) and you can continue to read the thread. If the box is not checked, you won't go back, you will remain at the end of the thread. Use whatever suits your fancy.

1. Thoroughly clean the toilet.
2. Add the required amount of shampoo to the toilet water, and have both lids lifted.
3. Obtain the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.
4. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids (you may need to stand on the lid so that he cannot escape).
CAUTION: Do not get any part of your body too close to the edge, as his paws will be reaching out for any purchase they can find.
5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a 'power wash and rinse' which I have found to be quite effective.
6. Have someone open the door to the outside and ensure that there are no people between the toilet and the outside door.
7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.
8. The now-clean cat will rocket out of the toilet, and run outside where he will dry himself.

Sincerely,

The Dog

The first time was fine for the cat who had the ringworm, but the other cat played dead as when I was done and lifted him out of the tub. I figured out he wasn't dead, but then he held a grudge for four hours.

I still bathe them once in a while. I don't want them to get un-used to it.

What's interesting about that is the plan looks pretty much the same as all the reports from a month or more ago. Hopefully they've been spending the time ironing out the details and building consensus among lawmakers for the long term political will this will take.

Some of those previous articles also mentioned waiting on the the Nov 23rd NATO meeting so McChrystal and the Admin's plan could be first presented to our allies, to get/keep them on board. Here's a NYT article on the meeting from yesterday:

NATO Ministers Endorse Wider Afghan Effort

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — Defense ministers from NATO on Friday endorsed the ambitious counterinsurgency strategy for Afghanistan proposed by Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, giving new impetus to his recommendation to pour more troops into the eight-year-old war.

General McChrystal, the senior American and allied commander in Afghanistan, made an unannounced appearance here on Friday to brief the defense ministers on his strategic review of a war in which the American-led campaign has lost momentum to a tenacious Taliban insurgency.

My Primary Care doctor retired a couple of months ago, and I had an appointment with his replacement this morning. Nice guy, seems to be competent, and understands heart defects enough to know when he should step back and call in the Cardiologist. His name is Dr. Holmes.

Most of the retired doctor's patients have been transferred to Dr. Holmes, along with the nurse. That makes sense, the nurse can keep everything on an even keel until the new guy gets his bearings.

In an effort to protect their privacy, the nurses name tags have first name only - a lot of places do that - and i found out this morning that the nurse's surname is Watson.

I am glad my last name isn't Moriarty!

NATO officials are happy about a troop surge so long as it isn't troops other than US troops being added. The European commitment is lagging and troop levels for our European allies isn't nearly what it should be, nor do they have the capabilities that they should have to take the fight to the Taliban.

In fact, there were reports that British soldiers were being sent into the field with a fraction of the ammo needed.

I personally doubt it, but I just hope most decide to maintain their troop levels for as long as possible. I don't see how we could make up for the troop deficit if too many of them bow to popular opinion in their countries.

It always seemed to me if a lot our allies let the administration know they'd be pulling out soon it would have to weigh heavily on any decision to redouble our Afghanistan efforts.

It was a pet when I was in college. One day I returned to my dorm to find that the hamster had gotten out of its cage, and ended up falling into a mostly-empty container of hot-and-sour soup. (My study group had had Chinese take-out the night before.)

She had managed to keep from drowning, thank God, but was totally saturated in the stuff. I put her back in the cage, but figured out rapidly that she wouldn't clean her fur--the stuff smelled horribly of vinegar, and it was just all too much. So I, very nervously, rinsed her thoroughly under a tepid tap in the bathroom sink, and shampooed her.

I've been reading reports like that, too. The British government has been throwing its money at the NHS and domestic causes, defense doesn't rate as a priority. I'm not sure how that will change until the British Army actually loses a battle and sees a unit doestroyed by this government malfeasance. Other than that, any attempt to redress things will likely end in people getting ticked that their gravy train was cut. This is a major reason I don't like the government running things like health care: It causes the government to favor those things instead of matters of national security that are a government's undoubted duty.

One thing that's struck me as extremely counterproductive has been all the hawks (Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney, etc) pushing the dithering/showing-weakness meme in the national media lately. What I mean is they're ostensibly all for redoubling our AfPak efforts but, while undermining the President's credibility as Commander in Chief (painting him as an indecisive coward) likely is an effective political/electoral strategy, it will only make it more likely his war effort won't have the support of enough of the american people and consequently members of congress, that it will need for its long term success.

Hmm. Interesting approach. Is it a sliding scale of 1 to 5 for the degree of how much you agree with the purity test or does the test feature simple yes/no answers.

Of the ten points, the only one where I might have trouble is with illegal immigration. Other than that, I was in full agreement.

re: #631 Dark_Falcon

number one rules out Charlie Crist for starters.

Achiving close to 94/5% coverage of Americans will be exceptionally difficult under number two without massive subsidies and bailouts for insurance companies to keep the sickest on the rolls and to prevent them denying people.

6 could be read as ruling out other stratergies when the game changes on the ground.

Essentially - it's a rod for all Republican backs. The problem is not that GOP candidates are too modertae in the public perception - the general public would welcome more moderate candidates less in lock step.

I could pass that test. But I have one for them.

1. Agree to end your near abandonment of California Republicans.
2. Expunge the race baiters.
3. Aggressively inspect your own incumbents for conflicts of interest.
4.Support Roe V Wade in any and all medical reform policies.
5.Limit Federal Funding of abortions to Life of mother, rape and incest.
6. Accept a policy ink between spending and revenues, ban non emergence /war/tragedy deficit spending.
7. Support issuing war bonds.
8. Support issuing deficit bonds.

etc., etc.

As proposed, candidates who disagree with more than three of the ten items would be denied RNC funding and endorsements. I don't agree with this part of the proposal at all, but it does give Republicans some wiggle room. Still, I wouldn't make such a demand, and would prefer to see a simple statement of principles, with the social "conservative" items simply removed and the focus put back on small government and fiscal responsibility.

Agreed.

re: #631 Dark_Falcon

The Democrats regained the majority by taking on candidates who were against card check but for public option and vice versa.

They adopted pro-lifers who oppose the death penalty and vice versa.

They adopted social conservatives who recognised Government had a significant role to play in healthcare or environmental protection and the like.

The Democratic tent will eventually collapse - but it's a tent that the Republicans need to regain the House by winning in purple or light blue areas by replacing the current rickety strom shelter.

I think a more likely option is that both parties continue to push for purity and moderates like you describe simply end up out in the cold.

They are going to become an endangered species if they don't get on board with atleast some of the upcoming programme or promise to atleast vote on cloture.

Agree totally, continuing in that matter will cause the general populace to confuse them with the meme of the democrat/liberal/mfm during the entire course of the 8 W years.

Is it just me or was there few to no reminders about the JFK assassination anniversary on Sunday?
