To slightly misquote Benjamin Franklin..

I have often looked at that picture on LGF without being able to tell whether it was a rising or setting sun. Now at length I have the happiness to know that it is indeed a rising, not a setting sun

4 freetoken  Tue, Nov 24, 2009 11:17:46pm

Two birds... not alone... strangely, the advert on the side of my page also has two birds, holding some article of clothing...

The Sun, alone, the clouds not caring.

Not a care in the world.

The sky is quiet, hiding its secrets of atmospheric composition from the perpetually ignorant.

Here's an inappropriately suggestive song that would not probably make it on the Manhattan Declaration signers' Christmas playlist:

Redneck joke for Space Jesus...

A redneck was arrested for selling home-stilled whiskey. His lawyer put him on the stand and asked the jurors to look carefully at his client.

"Now, Ladies and Gentleman of the jury," concluded the lawyer, "you've looked carefully at the defendant. Can you sit there in the jury box and honestly believe that if my client had ANY whiskey he would sell it?"

You wouldn't hit either of them. Seagulls are quite maneuverable in the air. And after you missed, they'd swoop down and steal any food you had visible. Here in Chicago, they'll steal popcorn right out of the tub.

Iran's Ahmadinejad in Venezuela on official visit

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Caracas for a meeting with President Hugo Chavez, just hours after the Iranian leader stopped in La Paz for a meeting with the Bolivian leader.

Ahmadinejad and Chavez, two outspoken anti-American leaders from major oil producing countries, will meet Wednesday with the goal of increasing bilateral cooperation, officials said.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro welcomed Ahmadinejad at the airport, an AFP photographer reported.

An advance gathering of Iranian businessmen representing 70 companies prepared the ground in Venezuela's capital Caracas on Monday for trade discussions.

Just this Sunday I watched seagulls pick up and drop clam shells repeatedly in order to open them on the shore. It was fun to watch one particular seagull diligently try to open up a shell, only to find other seagulls swooping in to steal his prize. Squawking ensued and I was appropriately amused.

Probe in Fort Hood Intensifies

While the military pursues a criminal case against Maj. Hasan, a psychiatrist who was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan, the Pentagon is also probing whether officials could have done more to prevent the shootings.

One of the leaders of that investigation, former Army Secretary Togo West, said Tuesday that one of the main purposes of the investigation was to look at "policies and procedures that have to do with service members that may cause trouble or harm to their fellows."

Former colleagues of Maj. Hasan said he espoused fervent Islamic beliefs and a deep-seated opposition to the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Former medical colleagues also said his professional work was substandard. The probe will look at whether military policies failed to identify Maj. Hasan as a potential threat and whether his patient care was acceptable.

Approval of Obama on Afghan war dives

The mixed picture comes as the president weighs a request from the top U.S. commander for about 40,000 more troops. Obama said Tuesday he would announce his decision after Thanksgiving.

"It is my intention to finish the job," he said.

That's encouraging, I support the surge. This is interesting:

On a series of fronts, Obama is moving against headwinds:

By more than 2-1, Americans say the United States shouldn't close the terrorist prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, as Obama has promised.

• By 49%-44%, they oppose passing a health care bill in Congress this year, which he calls critical.

• A majority are against holding the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York, and nearly six in 10 say the self-proclaimed 9/11 mastermind should be tried in a military rather than a civilian court. That's at odds with the decision announced this month by Attorney General Eric Holder.

World powers draft (meaningless) resolution on Iran

Five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany have prepared a draft resolution on Iran's nuclear energy program.

Diplomats said on Tuesday that the draft document, backed by the US, Germany, France, Britain, Russia and China (P5+1), calls on the Iranian government to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to provide details of Iran's Fordo enrichment facility.

Meanwhile, the draft text also urges the Islamic Republic to suspend its uranium enrichment as requested by the previous United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The draft will be presented at the meeting of the board of governors at the IAEA headquarters in the Austrian capital of Vienna on Thursday.

The resolution is unlikely to pass with many IAEA governors who disagree with the P5+1.

We're having 25 people at my house on Thursday ... that's gonna be interesting. Monday night will be a great test for the Pats. I think they're on a mission after blowing it in Indy last week. Saints are damn good, but Belichick usually gets his team to "peak' at the right time. We'll definitely enjoy that one and ESPN will get a monster rating. It's great to "see" you, but I'm gonna say goodnight ... I'll catch you tomorrow!

I think what we're seeing here is just process working itself out. If someone insists on filing a complaint, it's likely that this is the automatic outcome. The same is true in the civilian world; under the same circumstances, a charge could be filed for assault, and once filed the police are obligated by law to investigate, and in many cases (domestic assault cases, for example) the case must go to trial, no matter what police may find upon investigation.

I don't understand the workings of military courts in such a matter, but I'm guessing that the Admiral's Mast mentioned would only be an investigative hearing that would likely pass the matter along for court martial anyway.

But in any case, I expect dismissal once this plays out.

I agree, but what annoys me is when the media shows a story like this, they write it in such a way that it seems like there had to have been a reason there was a complaint, so they can't be entirely innocent...and public opinion starts to show, guilty until proven innocent.

Think the Duke Lacrosse scandal.

Shooting someone in your yard??Bad!!
We have a daycare in our home so firearms MUST be SECURED!!
...Aluminum BAT ...not so much!

If you kill someone, you'll be talking to a judge. You can certainly use the Castle Law, or whatever it's called, in your defense. But a judge will make the determination whether it applies.

The same is true for a number of other offenses. Things vary by jurisdiction, but automatic assignment to trial doesn't require you to kill anyone under a number of circumstances.

No, it was Bryan Adams. But they should pay us reparations for Celine Dion. :)

Recently at HuffPo there were two Afghani brothers relating how they were abused by American forces. At a certain point in the video, 2:15 to be exact, one related how the Americans pointed their "AK-47's" at the brothers' heads.
Comments were 3/5ths of posters were slamming the US. Of course the ipso facto lie didn't matter and when I pointed it out, I was met with a flurry of hypothesis about how these soldiers were special ops who carried AK's and how the misnomer was an innocent mistake as if an Afghani does not know the names of different weapons.

Either way you get blood all over your carpet.

BTW, in an extremely rare occurrence in our city, 3 20-something year old parolees decided to break into our policeman neighbor's house at 3am while he, his wife, and kids were home. Very bad move.

He didn't shoot them, but came down ready to. They caught one by his fingerprints on all the outdoor doors. One by his DNA from the blood he left on the broken kitchen window. One by his blackberry phone that he dropped in the bushes.

They're all lucky they aren't dead.

ReConservative ReFounder ReDoug ReHoffman reconcedes:

The Conservative Party candidate conceded a race in upstate New York for a U.S. House of Representatives seat for the second time Tuesday, saying he doesn’t have enough votes.
Last week, Doug Hoffman withdrew his election night concession to Democratic Rep. Bill Owens, saying the race was close enough that absentee ballots could change the outcome.
Now Hoffman says he has no hope of winning.

[...]

Hoffman sent a letter to supporters last week seeking money for a legal challenge of the outcome. The Federal Election Commission said recount funds are legal, but the contributions would have to meet campaign finance limits, and if the money isn’t used for a recount it would have to be refunded.
A spokesman for Hoffman said the campaign didn’t know whether it had received any funds or would be returning any money.

Like I said, it depends on the incident itself and on the jurisdiction. In Michigan, for example, ALL cases of domestic assault wind up in court, thanks to state law. Police have no say in the matter at all.

I suspect something of this sort may be behind the story involving the SEAL's court martial.

Here's my stupid business idea of the day from 5 or 6 years ago. Have an online commerce site where you buy the collectible vinyl or 8-track or CD or DVD. Instead of shipping it, you store it for them on a small recurring monthly cost, while at the same time storing the digital copy for them accessible from anywhere with the associated account. Most people only want the digital copy anyways--unless it's a vintage Tazers (punk rock, "Where has all the vinyl gone") album which goes for about $100 on Ebay.

You can store the whole thing in Amazon S3 and only pay for what storage and access you use. I thought it'd make a good dot com music business.

Our 'liberal' media:

Longtime Republican media strategist Alex Castellanos will continue to serve as an on-air personality for CNN despite recently taking on a consulting role for the Republican National Committee, the network confirms.

On Monday, it was reported that Castellanos, who has served as a media consultant for many Republican presidential candidates as well as an advisor for the private health insurance industry, will play an expanded role at the RNC after the committee parted ways with its communications director, Trevor Francis.

Apparently, Castellanos makes enough money doing media work for private health insurance companies and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that he'll be unpaid for his work as the RNC's senior communications adviser. And since Castellanos won't literally be on the Republican National Committee's payroll, CNN is entirely comfortable paying him to offer "political analysis" on the air.

And here I thought the ethical/professional lines had already been blurred too much. Now, CNN -- you know, the network that has positioned itself as above the fray -- will feature regular on-air commentary from the Republican National Committee's new message/strategy guy.

Your wife plays Rock Band? Far out. :D

Is that the Beatles one? I almost bought the whole gaming system just for that.

Everybody please pardon me, but I need to vent. I just finished reading a report that three US Navy SEALS who helped capture one of the most wanted terrorists in Iraq are facing criminal charges because the poor thug appeared to have a bloody lip. The thug, Ahmed Hashim Abed, is the alleged mastermind of the murder and mutilation of four Blackwater USA security guards in Fallujah in 2004. The four Blackwater agents were transporting supplies for a catering company when they were ambushed and killed by gunfire and grenades. Insurgents burned the bodies and dragged them through the city. They hanged two of the bodies on a bridge over the Euphrates River for the world press to photograph.
This is a betrayal of the first order on the part of whatever agency in the chain of command that is responsible for this outrage. Of course the Commander-in-Chief is complicit because he could put a stop to the process at any time, but he is ideologically blind to anything that contradicts his leftist way of thinking. The resulting damage to the United States is incalculable, and the putzes up at the top haven't a clue. You also get that as a sort of "afterglow" when the aliens are done processing the humans that they have abducted. There is a residual, it's sort of like snot, which they blow out of the proton engine ports, and it can color the sky like that. Only happens before major holidays and right after the Super Bowl.

Yes, it should be interesting. It would be better if the discussion were taking place scientifically, but it appears that some of the emails were about minimizing dissent. That doesn't help.

Why would they feel compelled to make a false official statement in the first place, even if they did do so? If they felt that their chain of command would support them this would never have happened.
Then, when did the thug get his bloody lip? By biting himself, or by the Iraqi authorities he was turned over to at one point, or in the process of resisting the SEALS when he was captured perhaps? The bloody lip simply serves as an excuse to show how "sensitive" we are to thugs.
Our military personnel, especially enlisted personnel, need to know they are supported by their superiors.

Heh. I know I've missed out on all the discussions (and firestorms) over the emails, but I have one big issue. When I was in grad school, my regression professor was very adamant and explained over and over again why you do not massage the data unless you have an effing good reason to do so. He was very clear on why you don't throw out outliers, why you don't rescale data, or why you don't do transformations unless you can support it. So while I understand that climate data is messy and difficult to work with and comes in a variety of data sets, whenever I read them talking about massaging the data my antennae go up, big time.

Pets aren't covered on my lease. He can't stay.

I am sorry to hear that. One cat that really found herself into my heart was one my mother got when we were small. We were warned that this calico did not tolerate mistreatment at all and that her response to rough play was SCRATCH! Well, she did not even tolerate being petted, and we even fed her with great trepidation.
One day my aunt payed us a surprise visit with her two-year old daughter. Nobody even thought about Calico until we heard an incredible yowl coming from the next room. Imagining two-year old blood all over the place, we ran in only to find the little girl holding Calico by the tail and the neck, not squeezing quite hard enough to stop the yowling. Upon being released Calico ran under some furniture to hide. The child was completely unscathed. So I cut up part or a roast into cat sized pieces and using a yardstick started pushing them into the hiding place. Very soon I heard a loud buzzing noise, and Calico stuck her head out and allowed me to stroke her for the first time.
After that Walter-Calico relations improved considerably.

I was wondering earlier whether she got caught up in the foreclosure mess and no longer even has a home. That would be awful; but a more realistic outcome than not having to worry about paying her mortgage.

He campaigned on the idea that Afghanistan was an important war to fight and we needed to send more troops, so I'm not sure how you see him upping troops there proving that he can't manage to keep his promises.

Taking that tac, one could then ask why has it taken him so long to come to a decision about what he called the "just war", and one that he "knew how to win" and one of THE reasons he brought Biden on board!

It is time to turn the page. When I am President, we will wage the war that has to be won, with a comprehensive strategy with five elements: getting out of Iraq and on to the right battlefield in Afghanistan and Pakistan; developing the capabilities and partnerships we need to take out the terrorists and the world's most deadly weapons; engaging the world to dry up support for terror and extremism; restoring our values; and securing a more resilient homeland

Thats not an argument that would hold any weight in any civillian court - and even less i would imagine, in a military one.

The chain of command is there - if you step out side it, work around it and lie to it - you should expect the wrath of it. This is not about not treating a detainee kindly - it's not about not offering these detainees a cup of tea and scones after they were captured - it's the wilful dereliction of duty and a cover up.

I don't see how there can be an argument here over what is happening to these SEALs. If they are found not guilty - then that is absolutely fine by me. I'm not prejudging them - but there is a case to answer and they must answer it.

re: #428 Decatur Deb

It would be nice had he gotten a start on it, though.

Also, his pronouncements during the campaign would lead anyone to believe that he had a new strategy that was ready to implement - instead we get this delay. I don't think that satt or others are claiming that he was saying that he could wrap everything up in 11 months, but after all this time and copious briefings by the military, he still delays. I have no idea what sources of information or experience the Obama administration is drawing on to account for this delay.

If at the end of everything it is just a mid-range decision on troop numbers, the delay is pointless. Do you really think we will get an actual redesign of the strategy on the ground?

One of the biggest concerns was his inexperience. He stated that (along with Biden) they could hit the ground running. He ran on Afghan as being the just war. I expected him to not take 11 months to "hit the ground running"

His step one was to refocus from Iraq. That seems to be going to slowly, but we don't want to see Hueys on the roof of the embassy.

I guess the phrases about "my stratergy" doen't mean that. Sorry you need to be 100% literal. I will keep that in mind when reading all your posts

When you put things in quotes, they do actually have to be literal. That's the meaning of putting them in quotes.

Obviously, he would think that he would pursue a successful strategy. That's world's different from him saying he "knew how to win".

I mean, given that much of that strategy is not original with him, even a paraphrase of that would be "we know how to win".

I'm not optimistic about him being right about that strategy winning, either. But that doesn't mean one needs to frame it in terms he didn't say to make your point.

His step one was to refocus from Iraq. That seems to be going to slowly, but we don't want to see Hueys on the roof of the embassy.

Boston Globe, July 6, 2008:
...
If elected, Obama says, he would immediately withdraw thousands of ground troops from Iraq and send them to Afghanistan to help undermanned US forces defeat the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

"It's time to refocus our attention on the war we have to win in Afghanistan," Obama said in a speech last week. "It is time to go after the Al Qaeda leadership where it actually exists."

The Illinois senator, whose opposition to the Iraq war is a campaign centerpiece, has concluded that the US presence there has fanned Islamic terrorism and diverted scarce military resources from taking on new terrorist camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where Al Qaeda operatives trained for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Obama believes that the United States has relied too heavily on forces from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a Europe-based military alliance which has little experience in guerrilla warfare.

"Afghanistan should have been our fight," said retired Air Force General Merrill "Tony" McPeak, national cochairman of Obama's campaign. McPeak blamed the Iraq war, where the United States has about 140,000 troops, for diverting the Pentagon's focus on Afghanistan, where only 32,000 American troops are stationed.

Well, because when you put something in quotes, you're literally saying that the other person said that. I don't think quoting part of a sentence is ever going to achieve anything good. I can say, for example,

"I know how to win in Afghanistan, my plan is awesome, woot," and "I know how to win, it's by listening to the generals and following these policies proved in this way and that" have very different meanings.

It's perfectly fair to criticize Obama if you feel he oversold his ability to deal with Afghanistan; I'd consider that a completely valid criticism, one I agree with. It's only the 'quoting' a small chunk of phrase without any attribution that I'm objecting to.

Climategate in New Zealand? - Temperature Records Manipulated

There have been strident claims that New Zealand is warming. The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), among other organisations and scientists, allege that, along with the rest of the world, we have been heating up for over 100 years.

But now, a simple check of publicly-available information proves these claims wrong. In fact,

New Zealand’s temperature has been remarkably stable for a century and a half. So what’s going on?

Are we feling warmer yet?

The original wasn't my post; I think it was Satt's - he's diligently trying to find a quote on the web. He told Obdicut that he was quoting from memory of a stump speech, but this wasn't good enough.

I'm amused that such a non-controversial quote would cause him such concern. I guess Obdicut is contending that Obama would be more likely to say that he does not know how to win in Afghanistan.

Sometimes young cats (not really kittens any more) will suck on things (but it's, I believe, just a way of comforting themselves, or it's an indication that they're happy -- some cats, even the adult ones will do those "kneading" motions -- you know, alternating paw presses, which simulates when they were nursing kittens...) So, could it just be a "flash-back" to kittenhood going on here?

I had to use the USB cable; you need to download the .bin file to your computer and then transfer it over to the root directory of your device. After this, at the Home page, press the Menu button, select Settings, then press the Menu button at the Settings menu. There will be an option to Update at this menu.

It's kind of buried.

My computer does not recognize the .bin file, and won't download it.
Or, maybe it did download it and I just can't find it - it told me it could not OPEN that file. crap.

re: #519 Bagua

There may be reasons that the raw data is adjusted - but I keep coming back to an issue that keeps getting glossed over.

How long have we actually been able to determine temperatures on a global scale? Only since satellites have been able to track temperatures globally. That's only within the last 50 years (really, less than that on a daily - or minute by minute level). Before that, we had to rely on weather stations that were located rather arbitrarily and most of the planet was not covered - ocean coverage is limited to ships and/or weather buoys. I look at the data as being incomplete for prior to satellite data, and that the satellite data is limited to only the last 50 years, a far too short a duration from which to generate long term trends.

After all, we're talking global climate change here - not local climate change. You might be able to cobble together what has happened at certain points on the globe, but extrapolating to the rest of the planet?

We're still getting a handle on short term global changes, like El Nino and La Nina, which can seriously affect everything from rainfall patterns to hurricane incidence. This year's hurricane season in the Atlantic basin was particularly quiet, with accumulated cyclone intensity well below historical means, even if the number of storms was near norm (though still below norm). What does that mean for next year? I don't know. I surely don't know what it will mean for 10, 20, or 50 years from now.

What I do know is that we've gone another season without a major hurricane hitting the NYC metro area, which means that we're overdue for another storm that could cause catastrophic damage. That has nothing to do with global warming, and everything to do with statistical incidence of such storms hitting the NE US.

Not only that but the accuracey and sensitivity in the measuring equipment is refined over the decades. For instance, less tha n 10 years ago when we had to do an analog broadcast up to a satellite, we would have to run 350-400 watts of power. Today, with the newer generation of broadcast sats we need only 75-80 watts, and the measurements on our return are much more precise (whereas in years past we had a +/- 10 margin of error for our Carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N) · Signal-to-noise ratio (S/N, SNR) · Eb/N0 (energy per bit to noise density) · Es/N0 (energy per symbol to noise density) ...

Warming oceans does play into whether NYC would be hit by a big storm. As the oceans warm, storms will be able to continue to tap a power supply- warm water. Instead of storms losing strength in the North Atlantic due to colder water, the warmer water will allow these storms to keep going, increasing the odds storms will hit the city.

Stop! You're reminding me of my days in the Signal Corps working with tactical satellite comms.

We had to really push power to get a good send/receive signal; especially if we were in certain parts of the world and had to contend with ground clutter.

It was really fun when some Air Force tech fed the wrong signals to one of the satellites and caused it to de-orbit. We had a gap for a long time.

re: #579 J.S.

I did a search (but I don't think the database is complete). Using the phrase "know how to win" drew a blank. However, in a speech about Afghanistan, Obama stated (verbatim quote from transcript): "This is a war that we have to win. And as Commander-in-Chief, I will have no greater priority than taking out these terrorists who threaten America, and finishing the job against the Taliban." (August 19, 2008). Satisfied now?

Yeah, but he didn't say that he knew how to win!

re: #566 Sharmuta

I understand the notion of warmer waters aiding in generating hurricanes, or allowing storms to track into the NYC metro area with hurricane intensity. The issue I'm raising is that we haven't had any storm track in a way that it would hit the NYC metro area since the LI Express of 1938, regardless of any climate change; people just don't know what they're in for when it does eventually strike.

We've had some storms, like Floyd, but they were primarily rain events and didn't have the hurricane winds and storm surge accompanying a hurricane strength storm. Gloria did hit LI, but that was a Cat 2 storm when it made landfall. Historical data is here.

More on LI damage probabilities and concerns here.

Jackson asked that anyone with information on the incident come to the office and speak with her or the assistant principal as they investigated the incident.

As a result, the district determined that 10 students should be punished. The students received a one day, in-school suspension, which was served today. The parents of the 10 students were also called and conferences with the parents followed the phone calls, according to Landon.

Parents of the students who were kicked were also notified of what happened, Landon said.

In my experience as a country boy dealing with trees, I have noticed that the amount of light falling on a tree will affect the growth ring size quite as much as the temperature and, I suspect, more.

If you thin a timber stand and let in more light, the remaining trees have much bigger growth rings the next year.

How do these temperature measurements take into account how much light reached the trees way back when?

You cannot know, unless you have a time machine, and so there is an assumption that the adjacent objects shading the tree have remained constant.

It is a pretty murky thing, this estimation.

re: #601 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

10 North Naples Middle students suspended for taking part in “kick a Jew day”

From the story:

The following morning Principal Margaret Jackson addressed the entire student body on the morning news regarding the incident, reviewing the code of student conduct, explaining why what happened was wrong, the need to respect one another and possible consequences, Landon said.
. . .
Landon said until further notice, the school will focus the first 20 minutes of each day on character traits, beginning with respect and kindness. Homeroom teachers will speak with the students about these traits and will focus on bullying prevention, he said. Videos on the topic will be sought out and used as part of the training, he said.

Sorry, but this looks to me like an awfully tepid response to this situation.

This wasn't just some students harassing some other students.

This was an all-out anti-semitic attack on students for being Jews. In some domains, this would qualify as a "hate crime".

somebody upthread said these students should be required to watch videos of the holocaust, the camps, the bodies stacked up, the starved people. That is a targeted consequence for the targeted behavior these students engaged in, and more appropriate than a generic "in-school" suspension, and generic "training" about generic "respect and kindness" or generic bullying.

Correct. Growth rings measure (wait for it) growth. And growth is affected by many, many factors, several of which can easily impact large areas equally. A change in cloudiness. A volcanic eruption dumping a huge load of nutrients. A change in precipitation. Spikes and declines in pest species and diseases. And, yes, changes in temperature can play a role. But distinguishing what the cause was, long after the fact, is not a simple task, and is nearly impossible in many cases.

A controlled experiment with several trees in two climate domes or some such, and changing only the temperature on half of them, would be the only way to tell with any rigor.

Ahh, BBL !

Yes, that is the sort of controlled experiment that is required before a new medical procedure or medication is approved.

With these Climate papers all that is required is peer review, and people imagine that this involves independent scientists repeating the experiments. It doesn't, it just means they look at the footnotes and sources, and confirm that the methodology is sound. In the case of the tree rings, the data and programing has been kept secret, so what exactly are the peers reviewing?

I am willing to accept those studies but before I commit to economic suicide I want those studies independently verified using the original data sets and codes. Then I want the experiments repeated with new data sets taken by independent scientists.

Sorry, didn't realize the WKRP link in my #638 was vodpod. Can't find that turkey drop vid on Youtube. One link to it results in this msg from Youtube:
This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions.
