Happy Thanksgiving to all LGF readers — and let’s also give thanks for the men and women of the US military, many of whom are serving overseas and missing their families.

Here’s an outstanding collection of photos from Afghanistan, to remind us what these servicemembers are doing for our country: Photographer Collection: David Guttenfelder in Afghanistan.

Americans living in Canada get to celebrate twice!

11 Locker  Thu, Nov 26, 2009 10:11:25am

Have a great day everyone, especially our brothers and sisters serving here and overseas. We will not forget the sacrifices you are making and have made for us. Your service is the backbone of our nation, keep your chins up and get home safe.

I thought the only Americans in Canada were ex-pats who left America when Bush got voted in the 2nd time?

Well On Crete, all it meant was that the Exchange at Naval Air Station Souda was actually open until 1600. Everything else at the base was closed, though.

14 MandyManners  Thu, Nov 26, 2009 10:14:38am

I think I'll take an advance on practicing good will toward men today.

15 abuhasan  Thu, Nov 26, 2009 10:14:42am

Happy Thanksgiving to all our American neighbors (I'm Canadian). And Eid Mubarak to everyone as well!

It just kills me that Wal*Mart is open today. Sure, the workers get extra pay but, for pity's sake! Those wages are not even a drop in the bucket to what the Waltons will make. Is the day not worth more than the dollar?

China doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving.

But I think Wal*Mart is closed on Mao's birthday.

Similar situation, I had to work American Thanksgiving in Nextel's customer service call centre. Holiday pay and all. Except it was in Canada, where thanksgiving was a month ago. Thought that was pretty cool of them.

Cranberry sauce can contain explosives?

As for the pies and cakes being subjected to additional screening, does that mean they'll stick a knife into them and swipe it around to look for stuff?

I can understand the need for customer support of such a nature.

I wouldn't know. I usually carry my laptop, travel documents, a notebook and pen when I travel. No pies yet!

re: #24 MandyManners

It was a busy day too. I think they might have shutdown some American centres for the day? Regardless getting holiday pay for what was just a regular day here made for some very happy workers. If memory serves me correctly they also raffled off some gifts too? Sprint/Nextel had that global-mega-corp feeling, but once in a while they'd also do some real nice stuff.

Headed to Wilmington, DE shortly (brother's hosting) uummm :)

We thank you for our gracious host
For one more year, for one more toast
We thank you for the ones we love
In times of peace - the gentle dove

We thank you for the tough Marine
The guys and gals in army green
For Gold Star Moms, we pray relief
From endless tears and untold grief

We thank you Lord, you give so much
The strong rebuke - the gentle touch
Please save us from our selfish ways
And guide us through our dying days

Their Laogai slave labor camps will remain open, however.

43 No. Just, no.  Thu, Nov 26, 2009 10:35:43am

Today I am grateful for my family, especially my beautiful and highly active children.

Today I am grateful for my health.

Today I am grateful that my husband is employed.

Today I am grateful for my country, which is the land of opportunity for me and my children, and was for my ancestors.

Today I am grateful for my faith.

Today I am grateful for the men and women who risk their lives to keep me free.

I am actually grateful for these every day; I'm just saying so today.

I hope today finds you and yours well.

Gobble gobble.

44 MandyManners  Thu, Nov 26, 2009 10:35:52am

I would be happy to have a "full" time job at Walmart. I would be happy to have a 35-40 hour a week job anywhere. I can't even get retail places to hire me. So, I say Happy Thanksgiving to all those Walmart workers, more power to them.

Thanks for this site. You enrich the lives of all those who visit.

Hope your day is filled with good food, friends, and joy!

I just finished the photo set. Wow. Powerful stuff. Imagine an American candidate needing his supporters to literally support him on a ladder so he can get above the crowd to speak. I would so pay to see that! Afghan women voting.

The stark beauty of the landscape reminds me of our own Sonora Desert here in the southwest. Great catch on the helicopter crash, and the mortar launch. Whew.

49 Kruk  Thu, Nov 26, 2009 3:37:42pm

Happy Thanksgiving to my American buds! Things I'm thankfull for:

-In a time of recession, everyone in family my family still has employment, food, housing and healthcare.
-My lovely wife, who loved me enough to spend the past four weekends sitting through a Battlestar Galactica marathon. (And now asks me if we can do Enterprise next.)
-That my little part of the world has been spared strife and war, and the brave men and women from many countries who put their lives on the line daily to make sure that continues.

 Frank says:

I think (Abbey Road is) the best engineered, best mastered rock and roll album ever produced...except that I take exception to stereo placement. -- From "Frank Zappa talks about Faves, Raves, and composers in their g raves" - some English publication, I think. (2 & 3 from the book, "The Lives and Times of Frank Zappa and the Mothers", some Brit thing again (got it at Blue Meanie Imports in San Diego fifteen years ago.)
