The BBC Did Not Receive Stolen CRU Emails

In the stolen climatologists’ email story, the latest claim making the rounds of the right wing blogs (originating at Britain’s right wing paper the Daily Mail) is that a BBC correspondent was sent the stolen emails a month before they were made public.

Sounds juicy, doesn’t it? So juicy that at least half a dozen right wing bloggers took the story and ran with it, ranting that the BBC covered up the stolen emails even though they knew about them over a month ago.

Just one little problem. The Daily Mail article was completely wrong.

Paul Hudson, the BBC correspondent in question, explains that he was asked to confirm the authenticity of one of the emails, sent on October 12th, that included quotes from previous emails: BBC - Paul Hudson’s Blog: ‘Climategate’ - What next?

As you may know, some of the e-mails that were released last week directly involved me and one of my previous blogs, ‘Whatever happened to global warming ?’

These took the form of complaints about its content, and I was copied in to them at the time. Complaints and criticisms of output are an every day part of life, and as such were nothing out of the ordinary. However I felt that seeing there was an ongoing debate as to the authenticity of the hacked e-mails, I was duty bound to point out that as I had read the original e-mails, then at least these were authentic, although of course I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the others.

The Daily Mail article took this sentence from a previous post by Hudson, and either misinterpreted it or deliberately distorted it:

I was forwarded the chain of emails on the 12th October, which are comments from some of the world’s leading climate scientists written as a direct result of my article “Whatever Happened To Global Warming”.

By “chain of emails,” Hudson is referring to the quoted emails contained within the one he was sent.

Since many of the stolen emails released last week were written after October 12th, there’s no way that Hudson could have been sent the package at that time. The fact that neither the Daily Mail nor the numerous bloggers who posted about this false story even noticed this discrepancy is evidence of their increasingly desperate efforts to keep this bogus “scandal” in the news.

Will the Daily Mail and the bloggers who shouted that this was “more proof of a cover-up!” now post corrections? Don’t hold your breath.

For the umpteenth time. This is why we call it the "Daily Fail".

2 Gus  Thu, Nov 26, 2009 3:12:15pm

Epic fail. The Daily Mail is a gossip rag and the author of said article spends most of her time covering the Beckhams.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch (or make that NOAA):

NOAA: Combined Global Surface Temperature Was Sixth Warmest for October

Global ocean surface temperature fifth warmest

November 17, 2009

The combined global land and ocean surface temperature was the sixth warmest October on record, according to NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. Based on records going back to 1880, the monthly National Climatic Data Center analysis is part of the suite of climate services NOAA provides.

NCDC scientists reported that the average land surface temperature for October was also the sixth warmest on record. Additionally, the global ocean surface temperature was the fifth warmest on record for October.

Climate change and behavior change continues to be a leadership challenge

Posted 11/9/2009 Updated 11/9/2009

Commentary by Lt. Col. Kirk Rowe, Clinical Neuropsychologist
96th Medical Group

11/9/2009 - EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. --
As a clinical neuropsychologist who has studied the intricacies of how the human brain is wired for a living for the last 16 years, it still remains fascinating to observe why change is so hard to accept, especially when facts and negative consequences are within clear view. The negative effects of driving under the influence of alcohol, smoking, and obesity are abundantly clear; however, many people continue to engage in these behaviors.

A similar issue is America's enormous energy appetite that continues to feed the insidious encroachment of climate change. With world leaders meeting in Copenhagen in December to make decisions about what to do about human influenced climate change, the fact that many people don't believe that the climate is changing due to human activities is a huge hurdle in moving forward with action. To move away from fossil fuels toward renewable and alternative resources may appear to be a daunting task because it requires people to change their mind. However, often times in the change process, the most difficult step is the realization that change is needed.

A May 2009 report supported by 12 retired generals and admirals discussed climate change and its threat to national security, proposing "climate change, national security, and energy dependence are a related set of global challenges." They reflected on the concerted community effort by all Americans during World War II when individuals planted and harvested their own food, conserved fuel, and recycled rubber and scrap metal. The report states that these sacrifices made the war effort "more successful, shortened the war, and saved lives."

It would appear that people were more amenable to change then so what is the cultural difference now?

Navy Task Force Assesses Changing Climate

By Bob Freeman
Special to American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 31, 2009 – Rapidly diminishing sea ice, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, increased storm severity -- all are possible consequences of a climate that mounting evidence suggests is changing significantly.

As the scientific community works to understand the changing climate, the chief of naval operations has created a task force, headed by Rear Adm. David Titley, the Navy's senior oceanographer, to better understand and evaluate its implications for maritime security.

“Task Force Climate Change was initiated … to assess the Navy’s preparedness to respond to emerging requirements, and to develop a science-based timeline for future Navy actions regarding climate change,” Titley explained in a July 28 interview on Pentagon Web Radio’s audio webcast “Armed with Science: Research and Applications for the Modern Military.”

Outrageous outrage of the day: Thanksgiving!
Obama's thankless Thanksgiving

It's now official: So in vogue are attacks on President Obama that even his proclamation calling the nation to a day of Thanksgiving has become the focus of criticism.
...
The Web site Gawker called it an "uninspiring first effort from our most literary president" and expressed hope that he would spend "a little more time on it next year." Politico damned it with faint analysis -- it was "basic" and "brief" and "tread lightly" to avoid controversy.

His pre-Thanksgiving dinner is even being criticized...

I actually know a fair bit about British Colonial History. But here in the US the organization would not be referred to simply as "The Commonwealth". It would be the "British Commonwealth of Nations". Now that you've explained I understand what you were saying. Prince Philip is the direct descendant of Prince Louis of Battenberg, who was First Sea Lord at the start of World War I. He was forced out due to his German origins and replaced by Admiral John Arbuthot ("Jacky") Fisher.

Oh, and I'm well. Well and truly stuffed. I'm saving the Moet and brie and strawberries for a small version of our neighborhood's travelling meals tomorrow night. Everyone's gonna' eat their main course at home and do desserts at various homes. (Last Friday I did the main course of prime rib, taters in a dill sauce and asparagus--kind of an anti-turkey.) Maybe I'll go pick up some dark chocolate to melt for the strawberries.

It was in 1917, due to anti-German sentiment in England, that Battenberg changed the name to Mountbatten and adopted the name of Windsor. The family name was, IIRC, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, a minor branch of the Prussian House of Witten.

When Prince Philip joined the Royal Navy there was some consternation over his lack of a surname, so he was simply listed as Prince Philip of Greece. On the eve of his marriage to Princess Elizabeth, the Letters Patent under the Great Seal creating him Duke of Edinburgh called him Philip Mountbatten, which is his mother's family.

Arlo nowadays:

Guthrie endorsed Texas Congressman Ron Paul for the 2008 Republican Party nomination. He said, "I love this guy. Dr. Paul is the only candidate I know of who would have signed the Constitution of the United States had he been there. I'm with him, because he seems to be the only candidate who actually believes it has as much relevance today as it did a couple of hundred years ago. A probable but unprovable hypothesis is that Nixon personally erased the tape. He was a man of pathetic clumsiness and lack of physical grace (although a brilliant pianist), and the erasure was a hodgepodge of short deletions, seemingly the work of a person unfamiliar and uncomfortable with machinery.

If one could find a realist painter of the grand old school, it might be nice to have a painting, perhaps for the rotunda of the Capitol, enititled "Nixon Erasing the Tape."

The Daily Mail is fairly typical of the entire MSM,
lazy, indolent hacks who take their cues from AP and Reuters, cut and past, search out a couple of renta-quotes or unsourced quotes that fit their agenda and bingo... it's off to press.

It is especially amusing when one paper gets something spectacularly wrong and then the others cut and past, insert, and run their own versions as soon as the original appears.

Other that AP, Reuters, AFP they mostly keep an eye on each other to jump on whatever is the "story" of the day, often ignoring the real stories which do not fit their agenda.

Even when they get the story right in terms of importance, they still focus on the personality aspect and the emotive "human story" rarely digging deeper for real insights.

They are the Turd eaters, eating each others Turds which they rephrase and then post on their own rags, unimproved and equally superficial and inaccurate.

Voter Anger Is Building Over Deficits

After engineering an unprecedented spending surge for nearly a year, President Barack Obama now wants to signal that he takes deficits seriously. So this week the White House announced that it is considering creating a commission to figure how to fix the budget mess.

Eureka!

Well, almost. What seems to concern the president is not the problem runaway spending poses for taxpayers and the economy. Rather, what bothers him is the political problem it poses for Democrats.

Last year, Mr. Obama made fiscal restraint a constant theme of his presidential campaign. "Washington will have to tighten its belt and put off spending," he said back then, while pledging to "go through the federal budget, line by line, ending programs that we don't need." Voters found this fiscal conservatism reassuring.

However, since taking office Mr. Obama pushed through a $787 billion stimulus, a $33 billion expansion of the child health program known as S-chip, a $410 billion omnibus appropriations spending bill, and an $80 billion car company bailout. He also pushed a $821 billion cap-and-trade bill through the House and is now urging Congress to pass a nearly $1 trillion health-care bill.

Prayers and remembrance for the victims and strength to those who survived.

I'm reminded of my travels to Rome some years back. Gazing at the Arch of Titus in situ. There in stone relief depicted was the Roman troops in all their glory, carting off the Menorah and other plunder from the Temple in Jerusalem which they had destroyed.

My eyes fell on a bit of graffiti someone had engraved in the stone above the looting scene, some two millennium after the event depicted on the Arch, and the Roman people and empire long since extinct.

In modern Hebrew script.

Actually, it probably is. The key is to get Republicans presenting ideas on the issue. A good way to start would be to find specific programs to cut. Just a handfull, but enough to show we are serious about making cuts.
