It is getting to be embarrassing to call yourself a Christian on the Internet, too many christianists are stealing the title.

I read today that Obama is going to tell the Copenhagen summit that the United States will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17% before 2020. Considering the very short amount of time involved I'm wondering what kind of draconian measures it would take to accomplish that. He still opposes the expansion of nuclear power the last I heard and even if he had changed his mind we couldn't get that many plants on-line by 2020.

So all I can guess is that maybe he is aiming to really sock it to the end users (us), there is no other way for him to hit that goal without the population sharply lowering automotive use and electrical energy consumption. Even if he got his wildest dream version of Cap & Trade passed it would not have that much effect that quickly. Really, I seriously would like to know what it is that he knows that the rest of us don't?

A 17% reduction in less than 10 years sounds like it could involve a lot of hardship and tears...

re: #25 TheMatrix31

I think, or rather I hope that this turns out to be another empty promise, I'm all for reductions, but I want market driven reductions. Government can certainly help drive that market but not by turning the energy market into some kind of nightmare shell game with "cap and trade." They can offer long term ultra low interest loans for nuclear power plant construction, electrical grid upgrades, and alternative energy production projects.

They could help fund research on better power storage technologies, they could increase automotive fuel efficiency standards, they could help fund light rail and other mass transit projects. There are a thousand things they could do besides this cap and trade bullshit that is only going to enrich the market players while doing practically nothing to reduce emissions. They seem stuck on the idea of simply making energy expensive so that people will be forced to change their lifestyle. Wouldn't it make more sense to actually try to develop some ability to offer that other more sustainable lifestyle before trying to force people into it?

They have this whole thing bass ackwards. Government should not be trying to create a "market" to artificially increase the cost of current energy sources in the hopes that it will encourage the competition and development of other technologies.

Nice to see an occasional glimmer of hope amongst the posters at HotAir...

Jesus, you people are ridiculous.

If the SEALs mishandled a detainee, they should be held accountable. All this “they should have cut his throat” is childish crap. I’m sure the court martial will throw some light on the situation. All of you who want to make excuses for detainee mistreatment – would you kindly go f*ck yourselves? The U.S. should be held to a higher standard. If anyone has a problem with that, fair enough, go ahead and whine about it. And when you’re done with that, you can explain how it’s okay for police to arrest an Ivy League professor in his own home. Crybabies.

You people are acting like Allahpundit is somehow a Kos fellow traveler now. Grow up.

Enrique on November 25, 2009 at 9:29 AM

Unfortunately that small glowing ember of reason immediately gets doused by a deluge of runny dung...

I, for one, am tired of the “higher standard” excuse for the tactics that bring the decline of the nation. Bottom line, you combat violence with even greater violence. If this concept upsets you, too bloody bad.

As for the non-sequitur of an “Ivy League professor,” The Won had the “beer summit,” problem solved. That argument has been rendered moot.

I complain, not “whine,” complain about AP’s mind set it is because he is becoming a Kossack. Progression is slow, but definite. So, if a terrorist is given a fat lip, sucks to be him. As it seems it sucks to be AP and you.

p.s. don’t bother responding, I’m not listening.

I suppose that is one way of getting there, but it is only a temporary solution and an unattractive one to say the least. Too poor to consume also means too poor to invest in or implement the kinds of changes that are actually needed.

We should be working on changing regardless, even if for no other reason than it would be nice to be able to quit sending billions of dollars in oil money to the people who want to and are trying to destroy us.

Cheap, plentiful, cleaner, domestic energy is the ticket to sustainable recovery. This is what science and government should be working on 24/7/365 instead of wasting so much of their time navel gazing and dicking around with partisan political blame games.

Oh boy, another one of those, "The great American Pax is over" editorials, titled How Americans spent themselves into ruin...but saved the world.

Even if America is exhausted, worn out and a shadow of her former self, from having spent her way from world dominance into a chasm of debt, the U.S. does have something to show for it the last six decades.

A world saved. A majority of human beings lifted out of poverty. That task, far more prodigious than defeating fascism and communism or going to the moon, ought to be viewed with a little respect. And I suspect it will be, by future generations.

This should be contemplated, soberly, as other nations start to consider their time ahead as one of potential triumph. As they start to contemplate the possibility of becoming the next great pax or "central kingdom."

If that happens -- (as I portray in a coming novel) -- will they emulate Marshall and Truman, by starting their bright era of world leadership with acts of thoughtful and truly farsighted wisdom? Perhaps even a little gratitude? Or at least by evading the mistakes that are written plain, across the pages of history, wherever countries briefly puffed and preened over their own importance, imagining that this must last forever?

I still think it is a little early to be proclaiming our demise as a world power just yet, but hey, whatever makes them happy right?

39 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Fri, Nov 27, 2009 3:21:51am

re: #37 Spare O'Lake

No argument from me, but the powers that be (as in the entrenched existing energy interests) don't see it that way, do they? We still have a chance to dramatically enhance our independence while slashing our trade deficit and cutting off some of the funding of our enemies. We could also boost our exports by supplying other countries with alternate technologies.

Instead we sit and watch and talk and dither as we grow weaker and more dependant on foreign investment to keep ourselves afloat. As energy costs rise with or without cap and trade our standard of living will decline even more. Someone with a clue needs to be in charge in Washington and get our priorities straight before we really do all go broke.

And a prophet arose in those days and went from town to town, into every villiage and hut, and saith "Yea verily, the Democrats giveth! We giveth freely to one and all; come partake in our abundance!" And despite the wisdom of some of the people, many followed, because morons often spoke loudly and long.

And the Prophet came again, and saith, "Verily, we shall require the wealthy to continue to give unto us, and then we will give unto you, so your abundance shall continue. And while the wealthy were saddened and their countenance did fall, the morons rejoiced. For all was well.

And the morons came and saith, "Verily, it is time for you to give freely unto the Democrats, so that we may sit and sup with them." And the wealthy said "We have no more to give, and are now counted among the broken. And behold, see the Chinaman, he doth cometh, and the land now belongs unto him. Perhaps he can draw your water and serve your table, for there is no longer any blood in this turnip."

"And besides, who says `verily' anymore?"

That's one explanation. It isn't altogether unreasonable; our 15 year old washer and dryer failed recently, and the set I replace them with uses only a fifth the amount of water as the old one, and roughly half the amount of gas.

And they're made by Whirlpool, in the United States.

It pisses me off that I'll be missing out on my share of everyone else's tax dollars. But this program is weeks to months away from reality and we couldn't wait.

We'll see. I have a feeling Copenhagen is going to be a bust. China and India aren't going to play, and China is now the world's largest polluter in several categories, including CO2 emissions I believe. They're already crying about being a "developing country" that should be exempted from such regulations. And India is right behind them in terms of development, although not so much in manufacturing. But their increasingly affluent populace is demanding cars, air conditioning and all sorts of other energy-hungry toys at an increasing rate.

Then there's the matter of Senate ratification, which doesn't strike me as certain. They've been sitting on the much smaller Cap & Trade legislation for months now, and have effectively killed it through inaction.

And finally, there's the Administration's demonstrated ineptness at foreign policy, which so far has produced nothing but a string of quiet embarrassments.

It has been reported that he is going to tell Copenhagen that we will reduce our emissions by 17% by 2020 even without the treaty. Where they are drawing that number from or how he expects to do it I have no clue. If he does tell them that it will just be another in the string of foreign policy embarrassments you were alluding to. It would just be another empty pledge that will not be fulfilled as far as I can see.

He can't act unilaterally. He'll need Congress to go along, and that seems unlikely, since most such legislation would translate into a heavy impact on voters back in the home district. And accomplishing reductions through incentives, although it would be the method I would prefer, is also dead in the water, because there's no money left to fund such things.

It may be that he'll make such a proposal, just to say he did so, then fold up his tent when China and other manufacturing nations take a big dump on it.

"[Obama] reminds me of a chess grandmaster who has played his opening in six simultaneous games. But he hasn't completed a single game and I'd like to see him finish one," - Henry Kissinger.

I would too Henry, sort of makes you wonder if he is really up to the game...

This is really interesting.

In my experience (ten years younger than the Obamas but still in the same era of diversity on college campuses) a certain type of "exceptional minority" -- and for better or worse I was considered one-- learns to game a particular type of white liberal with the right openings; saying the right things, -being- the right things. Shelby Steele wrote about this as racial compromise.

I could give many examples and did here during the campaign but if you look at how brilliantly Obama opens, presents himself as a symbol, from the day he transferred to Columbia, there is no question in my mind that he elicits tons of help from a particular type of white liberal in closing. ie getting on the Law Review-- becoming its president (a new title created for him) without really producing any scholarship, becoming a law prof without having to produce, ditto Senator. I have zero doubt he was helped in all kinds of ways by his professors who needed him to be what they wanted him to be.

He has been taught and taken advantage of the fact that merely showing up is enough since he represents all of the things his (liberal white) constituents need him to; namely conferring on them goodness and racial absolution. The guy gets and advance Nobel Prize, for goodness sake, which is not just insulting to the legacy of MLK but insulting to Obama who probably is capable of earning the prize one day for a real accomplishment.

While I would never underestimate Obama the kind of relationship he is in with the largely white liberal media etc is debilitating to both having to actually perform. T

Do you know what every Tickle Me Elmo doll gets before leaving the factory?

Before “equality” ruined everything, the best food went to the most important people, while the bootblacks and common whores were left to chew on whatever piece of seal gristle they could scrounge up. Have everyone bring along last year’s tax return and a letter of reference before distributing plates.

How about they hire a band that isn't eligible for Social security?
I dunno...Greenday, Deathcab for Cutie, King of Leon, snow patrol..The list goes on...

I can't name a song by any of those bands and I would rather listen to or see The Who than any of today's pop acts.

I think they should get George Clinton & The P-Funk All Stars.

The Who still (occasionally) tours and sell out all of their shows. They'll get great ratings. That's all the network cares about.

If Mr. Methane drew as many people as The Who, they would probably hire him.

The problem with the Super Bowl is you have a very diverse crowd. Hard to please all of them musically. The NFL has made some odd choices before, and I've been disappointed with the Halftime Show for decades, frankly. If I was going to book a widely known, relatively well-liked big name band for Halftime, I'd look at U2. But just as an excuse to make you smile, I'd also look at booking John Mayer:

Maybe the NFL should think more about exposing well known American artists and groups to a global audience since football is uniquely American. John is big enough to merit the attention, and it would be a way for the NFL to showcase the best of America in sports and music. Just a thought.

I think he stole it from Peter, Paul and Mary.

re: #319 Spare O'Lake

No way. Zimmerman wrote it and recorded it, but PP&M had a megahit with their cover.

According to Wiki (I'm lazy today), Dylan wrote Blowin' in the Wind.

In his sleeve notes for The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991, John Bauldie writes that it was Pete Seeger who first identified the melody of "Blowin' in the Wind" as Dylan's adaptation of the old Negro spiritual "No More Auction Block". According to Alan Lomax's The Folk Songs of North America, the song originated in Canada and was sung by former slaves who fled there after Britain abolished slavery in 1833. In 1978, Dylan acknowledged the source when he told journalist Marc Rowland: "'Blowin' in the Wind' has always been a spiritual. I took it off a song called 'No More Auction Block' — that's a spiritual and 'Blowin' in the Wind' follows the same feeling."[6] Dylan's performance of "No More Auction Block" was recorded at the Gaslight Cafe in October 1962, and appeared on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991

Stevie Wonder helped to popularize it, as did Peter Paul & Mary.

for the SB, you want a rockin, festive band that gets people on their feet and dancing...not some droll, dark, unfun garage band

I've heard from friends in the military that Japan has some great "cat houses."

Oh wait, wrong kind.

The design of the cat runway fits in nicely with the architecture.

Er, no I don't. I can't stand sports, why would that add anything to my interest?

"The president does face a serious battle inside his own caucus, his own party, particularly in the House of Representatives," former senior Bush adviser Karl Rove told Fox News. "But here's a moment for bipartisanship. I suspect the president will easily win support for this if he reaches out and melds together the Democrats who are willing to support his war policy with the Republicans. I suspect virtually every Republican will support the president in this if he asks for their support."

line up!...spank the prez!
