Just had a wonderful dinner with an old friend reminiscing about common bonds and shared losses. Very healing.

Love the Keith Jarrett. Shared a house with a pianist who was a KJ fan. Listened to him 24/7, never tired of it. Also had a classical pianist as a neighbor, for many years. He even played beautiful scales. Never knew his name, because of the way the homes were, on the hill. But I was VERY sad to see him move.

So this music is perfect for the slightly melancholic mood I'm in. Thanks for the Keith Jarrett.

So, the choice in Web hosting companies is overwhelming... going to some of their websites is feeling like walking onto a used car lot.

Question: go "green" with hosting or not? Certainly the skeptics and scoffers downstairs would say I would be a hypocrite if I didn't pick a web host which was green...

What really irks me is my ISP, which is Cox. They give me a measly 10MB with the internet connection. Their web hosting options (granted, geared towards businesses) starts around $200/yr for mostly nothing but the IP hosting and a couple of gigabytes of data. You'd think I could just add onto my current service the cost of IP hosting... but no, not with a cable company. Everything is a separately priced product.

Reading about Keith Jarrett:

Jarrett has commented that his best performances were during the times where he had the least preconception of what he was going to play at the next moment. An apocryphal account of one such performance had Jarrett staring at the piano for several minutes without playing; as the audience grew increasingly uncomfortable, one member shouted to Jarrett, "D sharp!" to which the pianist responded, "Thank you!" and launched into an improvisation at speed.

Here's a pr release:

Global Climate Week (Sept. 21-26) will mark the official launch of the Hopenhagen movement, less than 80 days before the COP15 meeting.

Hopenhagen will allow citizens to become active participants in the climate change dialogue and make their voices heard to world leaders and the conference delegates attending the meeting. The ultimate call to action will be to secure signatures for the "Climate Change" petition in support of the U.N., which calls for a climate treaty that is "ambitious, fair and effective in reducing emissions." The Hopenhagen Web site, Hopenhagen.org, will serve as the campaign hub to give citizens, governments, nonprofits and businesses the tools to rally support for a positive outcome at the COP15 Climate Change Conference.

Plimer is one of the current darlings of the right-o-sphere, but we've picked him apart here before. His latest book has had a thorough going through all over the internet.

Personally I think he is just as looney as the creationists - they don't have an exclusive on dogmatic silliness.

Just out of interest, I came across a geologist who is anti-creationism and a climate sceptic. Ian Plimer
Thought that you might be interested.

Ian Plimer is a dyed in the wool kook. Another one trying to claim that CO2 doesn't cause global warming, and using faked and cherry-picked data to do it.

See: [Link: scienceblogs.com...]

There's much more on Plimer at ScienceBlogs. Just search on his name there. He has ZERO credibility.

I used to get out of control. It lasted until about February. Still comes in short spurts but I avoid doing the middle name thing altogether. I have this odd tendency to side with the underdog sometimes. It was the same thing that happened with President Bush that when I saw him becoming the underdog I started to take his side. It's similar with Obama.

Beethoven - The Symphonies / Augér, Robbin, Rolfe Johnson, Reinhart, AAM, Hogwood [BOX SET] [ORIGINAL RECORDING REISSUED]

re: #130 Charles

Tonight I had a conversation with an old friend and her boyfriend about just that. As a graduate student I told her that I was as interested in domestic far right extremism as anything overseas. It's very very dangerous. Domestic terrorism is more likely to come from far right "Christian" sources than anything "foreign." We have certain mythologies that drive some folks over the edge into violent action. A way of thinking shapes their mindset. It is deeply misogynistic and also typically racist. They would never own up to that of course. But it's borne out of a subcultural milieu that sees everything from a worldview which sees everyone else as their eternal enemy. This mindset, which I know very well, is very difficult to interact with. One of the things I'm interested in is in trying to break down the barriers that exist intellectually, small piece by small piece. I hope that this will at least open up their thinking to critical analysis. Small victories are victories nonetheless.

I was asked once during an interview: name the best hot dog. Was easy.

My last girlfriend had moved down here from Michigan and was bemoaning the loss of the great hot dogs up there. She was insisting that all the ones down here had pork and fillers in them, blah, blah. After listening to her rattle on for about four minutes I finally cut her off and said, "why don't you just buy Kosher hot dogs like maybe some Hebrew Nations?"

"Oh yeah, I guess could do that"

D'oh!

In Michigan, it is law. You cannot use lips and ears and stuff. You must use peices of pork that are actual cuts of meat, if you want a pork dog. Hebrew Nationals are pure beef.

starting out with five pounds of tomatoes to get about four cups of ketchup is a lot more expensive than store bought though. :(
