The EOS 7D is a killer camera. I've been lusting after it for months. But that price tag is daunting.

If you're going with the 7D, why not go a step further. And I'd be able to use all my existing lenses. Of course, that's a mortgage payment or two, and which comes first? Mortgage or the killer camera to end all cameras?

I know.

The camera. /

Yes, for now. I am really after the video possibilities. SLR depth of field and the available lenses make really creative "depth of field" scenes pop. At the LA rock clubs OMG! The doormen have no idea SLR's do video. And one of my favorite local bands is about to release a new CD and tour it in LA.

Yeah, the SpeedGraphic. I used to use one of those in my high school photo club. They are capable of taking excellent pictures.

As far as "DSLR"s go, I think the Panasonics have much going for them - small, and that articulating LCD really brings home the digital advantage of convenience.

Yeah, technically if it doesn't have a mirror we shouldn't call it an DSLR, but oh well...

There's old school, and then there's old school taken to a whole different level. Medium format Hasselblad with full digital 39mp. Of course, the price is a wee bit steep.

Someday I'll go for one of those. Very challenging to use well. The ability to shift the focal plane is very appealing.
re: #12 lawhawk

I am less impressed with the digital backs. They are so small! It's really a scan job. There are no 4x6 or 8x10 sensors yet, at least not for us consumers. I'd use film after using the digital back to set up. The Hasselblad optics are to die for though!

Yesterday was the Marine friend's funeral.

Two Full-Bird Colonels folded his flag, and presented it to his widow. From what I understand, it is very rare for officers to do that for an enlisted man.

The Colonel who presented the flag cried as he gave it to her; took him two minutes to squeeze out the "grateful country" speech.

Was a lovely service.

36 Daniel Ballard  Sun, Nov 29, 2009 3:37:58pm

re: #35 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

Focus shifting and depth of field will be the SLR dominance over hand held consumer video for years. You would spend $3000 or far more on a video camera with a variety of lenses like any SLR has available. As a video camera the 7D is dirt cheap. As an SLR middle ground. Alas as Charles says there is always something better.

The one review for that $33,000 Hasselblad is hilarious:

I purchased this camera in lieu of paying rent on my apartment for 4 years, and believe me when I say it was worth it. I used the box that it came in as a hat and some other boxes for a home. It's uncomfortable but the pictures I've taken of my new home are so sharp that you can see the fleas on the brick I use for a pillow. I can also take high detail pictures of my children (who I am no longer able to see due to court order resulting from gross negligence) from an acceptable distance. Highly recommended!

45 armylaw  Sun, Nov 29, 2009 3:47:53pm

re: #32 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

I think it depends on the relationship between the officers and enlisted. For a lot of enlisted, the flag being given by their sergeants means more than from the officers, but there are exceptions. Certainly, as sergeants move up the ranks, they tend to get close to their officer counterparts.

Haven't used the D5000, but I really like my Nikon D90.

47 Charles Johnson  Sun, Nov 29, 2009 3:51:17pm

I think the D5000 and the D90 are very similar in terms of features, but the D90 has more of a traditional SLR-type body, with some weight and solidity to it. The D5000 seems to be lighter and less "professional" in build quality. The software is the same, I think.

48 lawhawk  Sun, Nov 29, 2009 3:55:14pm

re: #43 armylaw

I'm partial to Canon, and I started with a film Rebel 2000. Going to the Canon DSLRs was natural since all my existing lenses work.

If you're starting for scratch, the best advice is to go to a camera store that has the Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony body/kits and get a feel for them. You've got to see which one has a good feel in your hand.

I preferred the Canon body to the Nikon, but that's my preference.

Bear in mind that Canon and Nikon generally have more lenses and other accessories than other brands, although Tamron and Sigma also make lenses and other accessories for the other brands.

Also, if you go with a Canon or Nikon, you'd have to get lenses with vibration reduction/image stabilizers, since the bodies don't have them. That adds cost to the lenses, and there are tradeoffs to that feature being on the body.

Hope that helps some.

49 Jeff In Ohio  Sun, Nov 29, 2009 3:56:01pm

I know of a couple guys that went through my graduate program who made a latent image out of a camera obscura set up with grass seed glued to the focal plane. IIRC the exposure took a month, but the image had density, where more light hit the grass grew greater, in the shadows there was only seed.

re: #90 Jeff In Ohio

oops-- not that interview, but this one, mentions Uganda and the Family. I guess Sharlet has been on NPR more than once now--

The Secret Political Reach Of 'The Family'

Mr. SHARLET: Well, the new legislation adds to this something called aggravated homosexuality. And this can include, for instance, if a gay man has sex with another man who is disabled, that's aggravated homosexuality, and that man can be - I suppose both, actually, could be put to death for this. The use of any drugs or any intoxicants in seeking gay sex - in other words, you go to a bar and you buy a guy a drink, you're subject to the death penalty if you go home and sleep together after that. What it also does is it extends this outward, so that if you know a gay person and you don't report it, that could mean - you don't report your son or daughter, you can go to prison.

And it goes further, to say that any kind of promotion of these ideas of homosexuality, including by foreigners, can result in prison terms. Talking about same sex-marriage positively can lead you to imprisonment for life. And it's really kind of a perfect case study in the export of a lot of American, largely evangelical ideas about homosexuality exported to Uganda, which then takes them to their logical end.

About 5,000 children under 14 die every year due to accidents, many of them preventable. On the contrary, the kidnapping of toddlers by strangers is extremely rare.

If there is no danger of flight by the mother there is no excuse for an arrest as opposed to a citation or a report to child protection services.

If we are going to start arresting mothers for parenting errors, we will need to hire more police for the tens of thousands "guilty" mothers.

Speaking of Christmas Winter Festival Festivus Belated Solstice:

Don't tell the ACLU, but today the little town I live in had a [shudder] Christmas tree lighting ceremony accompanied by public singing of actual [gasp!] Christmas carols. They mentioned Jesus several times, and Israel at least once.

All this took place on public property. And there was a uniformed, on-duty police officer right there on the scene, and he did nothing to stop this exclusionary, hurtful display of Christian supremacism. In fact, he seemed to be there to make sure traffic was safely rerouted for the benefit of the thoughtless revelers.

At any rate, I am happy for her to get a citation from the officer and a visit from social servers, but the arrest in handcuffs is ridiculous. It is a form of punishment as either way she has to see the judge.

I'm sorry. A ticket is not enough for this bastard.

Man put kids in trunk , went shopping.

re: #187 Cato the Elder

Psst.

They even let children attend this thing.

We got one going on December 5th and Santa is coming. WOOHOO!

Defending neglect? Hardly, I said she could receive a citation to face a criminal complaint.

I object to her being arrested, either way she sees the judge.

This is Stranger Danger hysteria.

Yes exactly. Every optic has its "sweet" spot. That's one reason experience matters. I have the CoC math if you want it as an excel sheet. For my tests I opened up until I got the ultra sharp look jewelry demands. F8 was it on my setup. F22 really blurred the image. Medium format has an even shallower depth, but shifting the front element around lets you cheat kinda.

Combat 18 claims responsibility for terrorist attack

Combat 18 Russia is claiming responsibility for the recent terrorist attack on a passenger train.

Many analysts are unconvinced. If it turns out the C18 claim is false, this is nonetheless a worrying development insofar as C18 Russia is clearly seeking to position itself as an active terrorist organisation.

Defending Obama…Again

I’m a big fan of criticizing Obama’s profligacy, but it is inaccurate and/or dishonest to blame him for Bush’s mistakes. At the risk of repeating my earlier post, the 2009 fiscal year began on October 1, 2008, and the vast majority of the spending for that year was the result of Bush Administration policies. Yes, Obama did add to the waste with the so-called stimulus, the omnibus appropriation, the CHIP bill, and the cash-for-clunkers nonsense, but as the chart illustrates, these boondoggles only amounted to just a tiny percentage of the FY2009 total – about $140 billion out of a $3.5 trillion budget.

Of course I don't trust anything from the Cato institute but I find their choice of target interesting.

You'd think after a couple of years they would get over being booted from here...It's like a mental illness...No wonder they aren't welcome here no more...Unstable..Bitter...Lacking any class...And they think they are good little conservatives..right.. *spit*

I've often thought how easy it would be to punk that lot into contributing their sad, whiny stories to a book called "Destroyed Lives: How I was Banned from LGF"

I saw that story earlier and I wouldn't stick my neck out for it. One guy making the claim and it doesn't appear that he has much in the way of verifiable proof. Do you think there's anything to that story?

I sure hope sales are good this year for the sake of the economy, but I can't help but notice the media is falling over itself to avoid saying the words "high rate of unemployment" when reporting on lack luster sales.
But what else is new.

Well I was one of the lucky ones who got to keep his job, and we still got our hours cut to 32. It's hard, you know? The temptation is to go for the credit cards but that can quickly turn into disaster.

Yes, it really is what they want to do.

Talking about going against the spirit, if not the letter, of the Bible (the NT, anyway)...I'l bet more than a few of these "Family" types aren't without "unclean hands".

if that's what the majority wants then that's what it is...centrist

So if the majority wants to say, destroy the Jews, that would be a centrist policy? Whether or not a policy is moderate or extreme is not determined by how many people hold it. Gaah.

The majority would vote for many unconstitutional issues if given the choice.

According to a wiki entry, a member of the "family" was Jimmy Carter. (Methodist). As in "it figures."

that's not the issue there...minarets are

So symbols of certain, approved faiths are OK in your centralist world, but not others ?

They also love Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. They seem to be somewhat divided on Pat Buchanan. All the stalkers and flouncers seem to revert right back to supporting Pamella Geller and Michelle Malkin. Oh, well.

And they all think librhuls ("transnational totalitarian progressives", as they put it) are teh evul.

Last summer I put together a word doc on all their sad pathetic sob stories on being banned from here.. I've called it the night of the living dead...
Several web sites have asked me to publish it as a post.. I will when the time is right...It will be biting and humorous..
/So there I was not doing nothing when all of a sudden...

"The Family" should be pleased -- Uganda wants to re-criminalize homosexuality...that was supposed to have been a subject of one of the Commonwealth's items (ie, a protest against Uganda was supposed to have been launched...I haven't followed up on that or checked out if Uganda intends to proceed or if it's been dropped).

WTF was that dude smoking? Is that what "The Family" really wants to do, recriminalize homosexuality as a capital crime?

Yes.
BTW, Stupak is also a member of the Family, which is yet another reason why one should realise that the Stupak amendment to the health care bill on abortion has as its ultimate goal the defunding of all abortion, for everyone.

re: #232 Charles

Are you saying that Peter Noone, lead singer of Herman's Hermits, is safe from Cato?

Of course he is. Anyone who can make a hit song out of the name of an English monarch without ever referring to the monarch's actual history is my ideal!

By the way, I just watched the 1952 first-ever film production of "The Importance of Being Earnest".

My two favorite lines, for the nonce, are:

GWENDOLEN. I never change, except in my affections.

CECILY. What a noble nature you have, Gwendolen!
