When I was in Israel my son-in-law admired the little wireless mouse that I had for my laptop, so I gave it to him, since those things are hard to come by over there, and I just ordered a bunch more through the LGF storefront.

I'm with you... I got most of my shopping done ahead of time, and some of the deals I got were better for the items than on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

But all too many people cut back on their spending, and retailers goosed their doorbusters to get more people in the doors, but they just aren't spending.

High unemployment and lots of uncertainty will do that.

I was wondering why everything was so cheap on Amazon last night. Got four books and two DVDs for cheap. Amazon is so great because you can find rare books. I found this one book that I remembered getting at the library as a kid called Heckling Hitler which is a series of political cartoons mocking the Nazis and another rare find I found was the autobiography of Alexander Dubcek, the Czechoslovak leader during the Prague Spring. Plus I got Robert Dallek's JFK biography and Albert Speer's Inside the Third Reich for very affordable prices.

Washington Times Runs Anti-Obama Birther Ad Featuring Racial Undertones

This latest national edition of the Washington Times features a full-page ad that claims that President Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the United States. The ad was purchased by the anti-Obama website ProtectOurLiberty.org. While the group has placed several birther ads in the Washington Times in recent months, the version that ran this morning contains far more inflammatory imagery — three monkeys, apparently intended to represent the U.S. Congress, courts, and the media:

I want to be able to put Kindle titles on my wishlist. Also a LGF calender shopping cart that would take my money.

So far nothing on Amazon's deals page really strikes me as a personal must-have. My only regret is the staples black friday deal for the western digital passport 500GB portable drive for $60. I've got a ton of them and my average price was in the $80 - $125 range.

I saw an interesting technique (for photographers) in the text: "Photoshop CS4 for Photographers: the Ultimate Workshop". It is called "Sculpting Photos" and uses a Wacom Intuos tablet. The technique is to create a shaded layer which draws out the whites/blacks tones (using the tablet) of a photo, thus making the photo appear more 3-dimensional...very interesting effects.

I'm waiting for a 1TB FW800 drive... no luck yet.

With Apple killing off the FW800 and FW400 ports on most models you might be waiting for a bit - Apple seems to set the pace for obsoleting interconnect and other technologies and I suspect USB will rule the low and midrange storage game and eSATA will clean up at the high end. Firewire looks like it will be left in the cold. You might have to settle for a third party drive enclosure that you can slap any old SATA drive into if you need the FW800.

Back from the dentist with a "whine" update (Booberg pay attention).

Well, the dentist decided not to try out my new partials today, since the Mengele The Oral Surgeon I went to a week ago left in a bone chip, which caused bad healing (can you say no healing) in turn caused dry socket in turn caused an infection.

I thought my gum was a little more painful than it should have been a whole week later.

So, antibiotics (love how they make me sick to the stomach) and happy pills and will have to wait a week before I try the partials.

An Open Letter to President Obama from Michael Moore

Dear President Obama,

Do you really want to be the new "war president"? If you go to West Point tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8pm) and announce that you are increasing, rather than withdrawing, the troops in Afghanistan, you are the new war president. Pure and simple. And with that you will do the worst possible thing you could do -- destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions have placed in you. With just one speech tomorrow night you will turn a multitude of young people who were the backbone of your campaign into disillusioned cynics. You will teach them what they've always heard is true -- that all politicians are alike. I simply can't believe you're about to do what they say you are going to do. Please say it isn't so.

It is not your job to do what the generals tell you to do. We are a civilian-run government. WE tell the Joint Chiefs what to do, not the other way around. That's the way General Washington insisted it must be. That's what President Truman told General MacArthur when MacArthur wanted to invade China. "You're fired!," said Truman, and that was that. And you should have fired Gen. McChrystal when he went to the press to preempt you, telling the press what YOU had to do. Let me be blunt: We love our kids in the armed services, but we f*#&in' hate these generals, from Westmoreland in Vietnam to, yes, even Colin Powell for lying to the UN with his made-up drawings of WMD (he has since sought redemption).

re: #49 SanFranciscoZionist

The Swiss already restricted the use of those minarets for calls to prayer; this goes a whole level beyond. As it is, those restrictions wouldn't pass muster in the US, although you could restrict on a zoning/noise regulatory basis if it is content neutral (you can't go higher than X with/without setbacks), noise can't exceed X decibels, etc.)

The Swiss were clearly targeting just the construction of more minarets than the four that are present in all of Switzerland. Mind you that there are 300,000 Muslims living in Switzerland (pop. 7 million).

re: #57 brookly red

maybe, but I would kinda expect women to be more concerned with what minarets may represent then men...

OK, totally random semi-minaret story: one winter I taught Sunday School in London at the St. John's Wood Jewish Synagogue. (Yes, that is its real name, on the stationary, no, I don't know if there is a St. John's Wood Buddhist Synagogue somewhere.) I would take the bus in from Finchley, then change at Camden Town. At Camden I would be joined by several large Pakistani families, and we would all ride over to St. John's Wood.

I was vaguely aware that these Pakistani families must be going somewhere, and I was also vaguely aware that there was a lot of rather weird Muslim proselytizing material tacked up to things all over the area, but I never really gave it much thought. Then, after MONTHS of doing this, I was waiting for the bus back to Camden one day, and gazing vaguely over the trees across the street, I thought, 'hey, funny looking TV antenna'.

Then my brain filled in, 'hey, that's not an antenna, that's a crescent', whereupon my eye was dragged down, and I noticed the biggest mosque I had ever seen in my life, golden dome gleaming in the sunlight, RIGHT across the street. I had missed it for all that time.

Anyway, that's where the Pakistani families were going, it appears.

Developing: US S.Ct. ruled that the 2d Circuit should revisit decision calling for the release of detainee photos

The justices sent the case back to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in Manhattan, which ruled in 2008 that the pictures should be released to the public. But at the request of the Obama administration, the Second Circuit later postponed its own order, setting the stage for the administration to take the case to the Supreme Court.

On Monday, the justices told the Second Circuit to give “further consideration” to the issue in light of a Congressional action authorizing the Defense Department to keep the pictures from the public. With the issue on its way back to the Second Circuit, a final decision will probably not be made for months.

“We continue to believe that the photos should be released, and we intend to press that case in the lower court,” Steven R. Shapiro, Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement after the Supreme Court order. “No democracy has ever been made stronger by suppressing evidence of its own misconduct.”
