2010: A Spaced Odyssey

The moronic convergence of 2010 will feature the two loony superstars of the far right: Palin, Bachmann to headline Tea Party convention.

(CNN) – Sarah Palin will be the main attraction at what’s being billed as the “First National Tea Party Convention.”

Tea Party Nation announced Wednesday that last year’s Republican vice presidential candidate will serve as keynote speaker for the conference, scheduled to take place in Nashville, Tennessee February 4-6. A representative for Palin has confirmed the former Alaska governor’s speaking role at the gathering.

The group also announced that Rep. Michele Bachmann will be speaking at the gathering as well. The Minnesota Republican has become a hero among many in the conservative movement. A representative for Bachmann confirms her speaking role.

The silver lining... Perhaps the national tea party will be a home for the socons and leave the Goldwater Republicans (read: adults) in charge of the GOP?

Maybe they'd draw in more independents if there was a Palin vs Bachmann mud wrestling portion of the tea party event. At least they'd get the Pay Per View revenue...

It'll have as much star power as that "2012" movie, and interesting to watch for more or less the same reasons.

The only difference I can see is that John Cusack sounds much more intelligent that Sarah Palin in public. This is, however, an extremely low bard to hurdle.

Oh man, it goes beyond illustrating scripture. They have man walking with dinosaurs, and other live action dioramas that show the consequences of the earth only being 6000 years old. And if you didn't get it, that Adam thing wasn't a joke. The first Adam they had was found to have been in some, um, compromising movies.

I was just reading an article about Bachman's rise to power being pushed, and of course funded, by the Center for National Policy, a far right religious organization. It was, according to this story, started by Tim LaHaye, the author of the Left Behind books and John Birch Society member. Dobson is also one of their heavy hitters and did some work in Minnesota getting Bachman elected. Of course the article may be just junk, but it certainly seemed logical that a bunch of theocratic nuts got her elected, since she seems to be the most ignorant, unqualified person in congress, which given the competition is no mean feat.

33 Girth  Wed, Dec 2, 2009 9:53:11am

Repent, for the Wingularity is nigh!

From the Balloon Juice Lexicon:

Wingularity, the- the point at which the insanity from the far right and those controlling the Republican Party [continues] to grow exponentially until it reaches an unsustainable weight and collapses upon itself. This is also known as the Purity Spiral, wherein the density of wingnut increases compared to mainstream conservatives to the point of pure wingnut. As the ratio rises, this creates a phenomenon wherein no logic or sanity can penetrate or escape. When rightwing argument has become completely inaccessible to the uninitiated, it has reached the Wingularity. Coined by commenters JM and Joe K.

This has turned into a carnival freakshow of sorts. Reading some of the comments here spark thoughts of the advertising for the event "Come see the amazing Orbit Woman" , "Conspiracy beyond your wildest imagination", "Relive the horrors of history as told by Michelle Bachmann ." Charles and your sane readers, I give you guys a world of credit for breaking with the crazies! Thanks for the "Open Door"

47 OneMonkeysUncle  Wed, Dec 2, 2009 11:16:23am

I say we should have a pool: everybody sends $10 and a date - day and month - to Charles, predicting the the day they have to announce that Half-Term Governor Palin won't be attending their "Wingularity-looza" at all. Closest guess without going past it wins the money. (Multiple guessers of the same day split the pot; no extra credit for Meg Stapleton announcing Palin never knew anything about the event...)

48 crown_of_feathers  Wed, Dec 2, 2009 11:26:08am

Sorry, Charles, but there ain't no way this "moronic convergence" of 2010 can hold a candle to the moronic (Leftist) convergences of past years.

And here's the test (at least for myself):

I'm a Jew, and a supporter of Israel.

If I were to attend this "moronic convergence" with Palin and company, there is absolutely no way I could feel the palpable anti-Semitism, hatred and thick-headed righteous imbecility that one could have sensed in the Bush-era "moronic convergences" involving the Jew-hating, Islam-appeasing, America-hating Leftists.

I experienced a pro-Palestinian rally (the archetypal moronic convergence if there ever was one) close up, and believe me, those people are seriously scary. I'd take Palin and company any day.

Maybe I haven't paid as much attention to LGF since you started concentrating on the Right (if so my apologies). But, sorry, you haven't in my opinion made the case that the Right is as evil as the Left and its allies. I know you are trying to cure the Republicans of their perceived ills and weaknesses, but I really wonder sometimes if you are hitting the wrong side, and hitting it a little too often and hard.

49 earthtoned  Wed, Dec 2, 2009 11:34:18am

crown, you have a valid point that there are many on the left that are incredibly misinformed, but how many of these radicals have risen to the influential status of bachmann or palin? where are the leftist demagogues in congress? that there are extremists on both ends of the spectrum is a given, as will always be. when they rise to power the way they have on the right recently, you have a real danger imho.

Crown, as a liberal who has desperately missed "sane opponents" . However, what has ailed some on the left and right for years is this "talking point" elitism. I see you touch on the key words here "America-hating Leftists" , "Islam-appeasing", etc. I find it amusing that what many on the right have done over the years is turn it into "Luntz talk". The left is guilty as well, but I have yet to see key words highlighted in tv segments.

Being pro-peace agreement between Israel and Palestine does note make me "anti-American". You state you would take an event with Palin and Bachmann anyday, well don't get swallowed by the talking point machine, racism, death threat nonsense that entails.

I know you are trying to cure the Republicans of their perceived ills and weaknesses, but I really wonder sometimes if you are hitting the wrong side, and hitting it a little too often and hard.

I think the search for equivalence has deliberately been avoided. One "side" is criticized as needed, without seeking to "balance things" by then going after the "other side". The left got hit more often in the past, the right gets it more now. There has also been discussion of the limitations of the terms "left" and "right". And, I don't want to speak for Charles, but I have seen him mention that he's given up on the Republican Party.

65 akarra  Wed, Dec 2, 2009 3:32:49pm

From the article:

Phillips [a spokesperson for Tea Party Nation] says the conference will feature workshops, seminars, information centers, and organizational tools for leaders to take back to their respective local tea party organizations. He adds that the Republican Party is not coordinating or organizing with Tea Party Nation in any way.

Just hope the national GOP steers clear of any official endorsement or backing of this - with Michele Bachmann around, this promises to be exceptionally insane. There are great grounds for condemning this thing before it even happens, but I'll consider silence about it prudent, given that it might stay at the fringes and not go anywhere else.

66 SteveMcG  Wed, Dec 2, 2009 3:52:47pm

Taxes? Youre: #63 The Termlimator

Taxes? NOW you're worried about taxes? How convenient. Did you realize that when the government runs a deficit, like it did with the last Republican Congress and President, that there is no such thing as a tax cut? Just because the IRS didn't collect enough taxes the last eight years doesn't mean you don't owe them. That money was spent, as sure as the hundreds of billions being spent now. Medicare part D, the money not collected because of the Bush tax cuts now has to collected by their successors. Were you one of the "deficits don't matter" crowd? I got news for you. I'm a business owner too and it would have been a lot easier to have paid the taxes seven years ago then it will be to pay those taxes (that we didn't collect then) now. Because now we still have to pay for our government, we have to pay for the government of the past AND we have to pay interest. Also, as a business owner, I am fully aware of the roots of my liablities. When we threw away the surplus to give tax breaks which did little for the economy, we most profoundly saddled ourselves and our descendents with the burden of paying for our recklessness. Spare me your disingenuous indignation about your sudden tax burden. I find deficit spending to be most profoundly irresponsible and your refusal to accept the responsibility we all share is contemptible. We spent our kids' future. Somebody is going to have to pay off the debts we ran up, and that somebody had better be us.

67 Conservative Moonbat  Wed, Dec 2, 2009 5:49:15pm
