You know what I just figured out after all these years?
Jennifer Connelly, who played Deborah in the youth scenes of OUATIA, was replaced by Elizabeth McGovern in the later bits.
I always wondered "WTF happened to Deborah?"
And so did my friends tonight. "Wha? She looked totally different before!"
Well, Jennifer was twelve years old when she played the young Deborah, so obviously they had to find an older actress to do the later scenes.
But still.

Which as someone in the 21-25 age bracket, is really frustrating. "I support Regan!", "I support Goldwater!". I've read plenty of quotes by both men, but I really don't know the context. Its a pet peeve I guess. You support goldwater? Great, now spell out what that means. Explain why its all relevant. Put it in the context of current issues.

And it won't happen again for an even longer while. The USA is simply to polarized now. I don't even talk about unity because it just can't happen. The two poles hate each other so much that if they didn't have something to fight about, they'd invent it.

It has to be said, Reagan Redux certainly sounds more convincing than the miserable wretches pretending to lead the GOP, while actually cringing before the tea-bagging kookathon. I am surprised though that you guys haven't yet acknowledged that Romney has been undead for years. Let's face it - the living Romney supported gay marriage and state-run healthcare. Only after becoming a zombie did he magically flip to the latest lunatic right-wing talking-points. Don't even get me started on just what sort of undead creature now inhabits the trousers of Giuliani!

OK.
As you all can tell, I just watched a four-hour movie and I've had a bit of Greek fire.
Here's a little ditty to end my contributions for the night.
Night and Fog
A full moon lights
The rainclouds
From above
Fog obscures all
But the nearest trees
My shadow falls tall
Lit from the door behind
Upon the field
And my dog
Refuses
To stir
Into the wet
I wish I could paint
The night for you
As it nights

Ya, but it can be funny. Jesse was on Stern today too and he took the opposite approach. He just let him spout off all his theories and dig his own hole. Eventually he got to how the HAARP project resonates at the same frequency as the human brain, is used to control us all, and also causes global warming.

They should be treated like that everywhere they go. The problem is that people tolerate their nonsense. I see no reason to be polite to lunatics. It only enables their nuttiness.
When the lunatics are multi-millionaires and insulated from any actual discourse... it's sorta like rock stars. They have enough power to surround themselves with people who won't say no to them, who'll feed them cocaine and hookers and wahetever else they desire. And if you have that power and you desire ideology, it'll be fed to you by everyone around you whose career depends on your happiness.

btw, Cato. Loved the link in your post. Beautiful voice and guitar.
The Rolling Stones heard Ana when they were in Portugal and invited her to play with them the next day. They sang "No Expectations" with her.
That silverygirl guitar you hear, by the way, is the Portuguese guitar. Which was first known as the English guitar, until they ceded it to Lisbon.
In Portugal, what we know as the Spanish guitar is called a viola.

Ya, but it can be funny. Jesse was on Stern today too and he took the opposite approach. He just let him spout off all his theories and dig his own hole. Eventually he got to how the HAARP project resonates at the same frequency as the human brain, is used to control us all, and also causes global warming.
O&A run a good show, but essentially they're just loudmouths behind a mic. Stern is the master of the format.

Uh, A) he's a liberal and B) his show depends on attacking? Find me the Olbermann equivalent of elevating Bircher rhetoric ala Beck. Of Rockefeller conspiracy theories. Of paranoid dog-whistle fantasies about the president being treasonous and racist. You can't. There is no equivalency. None.
Beck is a dangerous force in this country. Olbermann is more like a shock jock for liberals. He took his snark from Sportscenter and applied it to politics. Olbermann isn't going to convince someone to take up arms against the country. Beck is heading in that direction.

I don't really think it's the same bullshit, I think Olbermann and O'Reilly are on one level, sort of wanky loudmouth type-A personalities who love a soapbox and who like the sound of their own voices. Both are essentially not dangerous.
And Beck is on a danger level above both those guys. I don't consider Beck's sedition dog-whistles to be equivalent to anything Olbermann has said, just like I don't believe Code Pink is equivalent to Birchers. I could see Moore being on the same level as Beck, at least in intensity of wacko rhetoric. But not Olbermann.
I will reiterate what I've always said: cable news sucks, and is bad for you. All of it. But comparing Beck to Olbermann, it diminishes the seriousness of the influence Beck wields.

"The serious point to this satire is that every single GOP politician constantly invokes the name of Ronald Reagan, over and over and over.
The Onion took it to its absurd conclusion."
I think the point some politicians are trying to make is that they agree with Reagan's version of what being a conservative is. Too often people lump the "right" and the "left" in simplistic packages. That would put the political philosophies of, let's say, Jerry Falwell and William F Buckley in the same camp. George Bush was not a fiscal conservative. The GOP is moving to (or claiming to) a model that reflects what Reagan believed. If sincere, it's a good move.
Damn funny video though!

IMO Beck is in a (nut) class of his own. However, this is arguable. The most important point made here, in my mind, is is that 'liberals' are unlikely to form militias.
The saddest and most annoying thing is that reasonable discourse from conservatives (like that seen here) -- seems as rare as hen's teeth.

Me too. I wish we had better candidates. The ones we have just suck for the most part. Mitt Romney is the best of the lot in either party and he's only decent. Not good, just decent.
Maybe that is enough? Maybe that is where we are missing the boat? We as the electorate? We don't pick decent people. Not to say Obama isn't a decent man but his experience was almost nothing next to a Mitt Romney?

I think that when I first embraced the GOP in college it was the stuff I read from Goldwater that actually closed the deal. I grew up during Reagan's terms, so he was a little too close for me to feel anything adult about, but Goldwater made sense.
The sad part about the whole Goldwater thing is that right when I was saying, "If the GOP believes this, they might be worth support," the GOP was beginning its multi-year betrayal of everything AuH20 stood for.

I'd be interested to hear actual comments from Beck listeners verifying that they *don't* believe the conspiracies, ranting, and leaving-the-C-out-of-words-that-have-them that Beck dumps on his audience ("Who's on the other end of the blackberry" comes to mind). You think all of Beck's audience heard that and said, "Ah, he's just kidding"?
In short: Olberman's viewers will tell you Olbie's kidding. Beck's viewers will tell you Beck's the only one telling the truth.
