Palin’s Birther Boo-Boo

Weird • Views: 3,420

Oopsie!

Sarah Palin’s trying to distance herself from her Birther-pandering remarks now, like any weasely politician does when called on an outrageous remark: Sarah Palin: Stupid Conspiracies | Facebook.

Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask… which they have repeatedly. But at no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States.

- Sarah Palin

So the lesson Palin takes from this is: “They do it to me, so I have a perfect right to do it to them!”

How presidential is that?

Meanwhile, take a look through the 1300+ comments for her Facebook post and you’ll realize why she’s pandering to Birthers — there are hordes of them in her fanbase.

I'm sorry, Sarah, but no matter how hard you backpedal, the odometer does NOT roll back.

She's not asking for his birth certificate, she's just fanning the flames.

Um, what did I miss... Since when did she DEFEND their right to ask those questions? I seem to remember her/her people going ballistic over it.

There is also the problem here of how rotten and cutthroat politics have become.

It's like the old Twoofer canard: "I'm just asking questions." Bullshit.

It's a double strike. Beyond pandering to birthers, a politician should receive dumb points just for thinking that pandering to birthers will rescue votes. If I thought i could win the nomination, i'd distance myself from birthers even if i secretly agreed with them...because they're sure as hell not going to vote for the other guy!

Palin's facebook page was largely populated by Glenn Beck fans when i last checked a couple of months ago. Birthers were strongly discouraged and there were few if any birther comments, and this was at the heights of birther mania. Looks like Beck fans have left now--after he fell out of line with the republicans wit his "3rd party" and independent talk, and with Palin after his crude "joke". Also i think he lambasted the Birther lunacy some time ago?--leaving the birthers and other crazies with a free reign on her facebook comment section.

Sarah's got company...in the 'facebook is my platform for sounding like a dumbass' department, anyway...

The mayor of a suburb of Memphis, Tenn. has accused, via Facebook, President Obama of deliberately timing his speech about the war in Afghanistan this week to block the airing of the "Peanuts" Christmas TV special. The Commercial Appeal found that Arlington Mayor Russell Wiseman posted the statements on his Facebook page, limited to friends viewing only, and said the president was Muslim.

Here is one key quote: "Ok, so, this is total crap, we sit the kids down to watch 'The Charlie Brown Christmas Special' and our muslim president is there, what a load...try to convince me that wasn't done on purpose."

I got nothing against Sarah Palin other than there were some legitimate questions regarding her competency to be one step away from the presidency. She has since done nothing to demonstrate she has the competency. In fact she has downgraded the perception of her skills.

I dunno. The floodtide of the current rightwing mood is now, so if Huckabee was going to win, he would have won in '08. I suspect that the current political spasm on the right will have dissipated by '12--three years is a long time to maintain a political fever. That of course doesn't mean there'll be a better crop of candidates to choose from then--just that Huckabee will seem like an old fad. We'll see, I guess.

I'm not a Huckabee supporter nor was I one during the primaries but I don't think the "clemency spree" knocks him out. First, it's actaully old news, and it will be that much older by the time 2012 rolls in. Second, his people can play the "compassionate conservative" card.

When it's Republicans, they call them compassionate conservatives.

When it's Democrats, they say soft on crime.

See how that works?

For me, it would be troubling if:

2) There was good evidence that a large proportion of the people to whom clemency had been granted ended up committing further crimes

I've seen some (but not convincing) evidence that 1) may be true, but not much on 2)

I think if Huckabee had made one "goof", that might (might) be something some voters could possibly overlook at some later date...However, this wasn't a single, one-off, failure. This was part of an on-going trend on Huckabee's part. (CNN interviewed a state prosecutor who, for years, challenged Huckabee's pardons, commutations, and "get-out-of-jail" free cards...all to no avail.) This was what he was doing every 4 days as Governor of Arkansas. It's beyond pathetic.

You know, I’ve got to tell you too, I think our campaign, the McCain-Palin campaign didn’t do a good enough job in that area. We didn’t call out Obama and some of his associates on their records and what their beliefs were

So, she never asked him to produce his birth certificate during the campaign, but thinks it would have been a good idea and that they really should have done so.

Huckabee commuted his sentence, meaning he cut the sentence from something in the order of 104 years down to something that qualified Clemmons for parole. AFTER that, he was then paroled by the parole board once they determined he met the conditions at that time.

I'm dismayeed at the number anf frequency that Huckabee used commutations and clemency, but re: Clemens Huckabee didn't "free" him. As a matter of fact, AFTER the parloe board did Clemmons was re-arrested for violtaing the parole but the PROSECUTOR dropped that case

The case file on Clemmons was quite thick, but there were issues with a timely filing of paperwork in one case; a lack of witnesses willing to testify in another. Those kinds of things go on all the time in any justice system, but in Clemmons case, it goes back to the original decision to commute the sentence of someone who should not have been allowed out of prison given his criminal background to that date.

The real problem with Palin's original statement, which was:

Palin: I think the public rightly is still making it an issue. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t know if I would have to bothered to make it an issue because I think there are enough members of the electorate that still want answers.

is that she's talking about birtherism in the present tense. During the campaign, it was perfectly fair to ask for Obama's citizenship status, just like it would be perfectly fair to make sure he was over the age of 35 or whatever it is the Constitution requires.

After Obama supplied proof, the question became unfair as did any insinuation that he was not constitutionally qualified. That's the real problem with Palin's statement.

That "regular guy" or "hip guy" stuff goes a long way, I must admit. I so detested Bob Dole until he appeared on SNL. I had no idea how funny the man was. He's getting on now... but he had perfect timing.

Also when McCain was on SNL and sang a spin off/parody on Barbara Streisand, I almost peed my pants. Mainly because McCain can't carry a tune and he knows it, and because of it, it's quite humbling. Well IMO anyway heh

I don't like either man, but it certainly softened my impressions of them.

The most disturbing part about Palin is she doesn't realize that she's done. I guess she just wants to make sure(that she finishes herself off).

I'm not convinced she's interested in pursuing a political career. She seems to have settled on being a professional gadfly, instead. Which brings in more dough, although only for a limited time, and her burn rate seems pretty high.

re: #156 KingKenrod

The real problem with Palin's original statement, which was:

is that she's talking about birtherism in the present tense.

Mind you, i'm not an election law professor, but isn't one required to furnish those sorts of documents in order to run in the first place...meaning that once one is cleared to run for POTUS, the question becomes inane?

The case file on Clemmons was quite thick, but there were issues with a timely filing of paperwork in one case; a lack of witnesses willing to testify in another. Those kinds of things go on all the time in any justice system, but in Clemmons case, it goes back to the original decision to commute the sentence of someone who should not have been allowed out of prison given his criminal background to that date.

Clemmons had asked for a 'time reduction'...Had Huckabee been paying attention, Clemmons would have been grateful for a reduction to 25 years (meaning he'd get out of prison in his 40s and not die there). Instead, Huckabee erases 108 years of sentence altogether. That in itself is reason enough to doubt his judgement as a potential CIC.

Like Palin, Huckabee chooses his public venues very carefully. The View is a great place to rewrite the narrative regarding his clemency/commutation of Clemmons.

I have not looked up the crimes that Clemmons committed in Ark. but the way Huckabee stated them made sense. He said that Clemmons committed the crimes when he was 16, no rapes or murders and was sentenced to over 100 yrs. He said he commuted them to about 47 and Clemmons served over 10, and then was paroled.

It seems to me that if the above is true...over 100 yrs for a young man really is over the top and it appeared that most people hearing this yesterday agreed with him, including me. And as teed off as I've been about Ark sending us this heinous cop killer I still can sympathize with the position that Huckabee was in back then.

Not to pick nits, and not to support Palin, but your conclusion Charles is just slightly off. Sarah didn't say that since it's ok for them to do it to me, it's ok for ME to do it to them. It's more If it's ok for A to do this to me (B) then it's ok for A to do this to Obama (C) Not if A-->B then B-->A

It's why she clarified that she didn't. I think she's trying to make the "I don't agree with what you're saying, but I defend to the death your right to say it." line with slight modification. This still doesn't take away from her Creationism problems and many other disqualifications, but I think we have to try to get the whole truth first, then give our opinions, not force the facts to fit our preconceived notions.

In fact I do think it was a little more complicated than that. I think he was born in the Canal zone which was on a long-term lease to the US. Our embassies generally are on owned property and granted a specific sovereignty by international law that I don't think, by definition, extends to things like the canal zone.

That being said, there is no doubt, whatsoever, that McCain is 100% qualified to be President and is absolutely a US citizen. Just a fun legal exercise to run through.

Now, you could make the argument that she's pandering to a crazy crowd--but which politician isn't doing that? Independents win elections, the crowd you pander to contributes the money. It may be an ugly system, but it's the best we can do.

Regarding the Huckabee/Palin ticket--possibly. But if the main issue is the economy, then candidates need to step up who have expertise in the economy. Fixing the economy will be the winning ticket.

Speaking of Embassies & ownership. There's an old legend floating around England about the US Embassy there.

The embassy in London sits on land owned, not surprisingly, by the Duke of Westminster (most of London is owned by him). The US has a policy of owning the land its embassies sit on so they called the Grosvenor estate and enquired about purchasing the land (a freehold). The response was:

"We're sorry, but the Duke of Westminster does not sell freeholds."

US Embassy: "I'm not sure you understand. We're the US Government, this is our embassy, we really would like to purchase it, cost is not a problem."

What an idiot.

If we've learned anything in the last few weeks, it's not that Obama is a secret Muslim, it's that Obama is a secret Japanese.

Seriously though, how many beers and sausages does a man have to have before people get a clue.

What race is Muslim, anyway?

I agree with you on this. Normally I believe that you have to give politicians at least the chance to retract without jumping on them. (God knows what I would accidentally say if I was in the public eye every day), but if someone repeats or is consistent with stupidity, then you jump on them. I think if Sarah Palin is clarifying or retracting this specific statement, then you have to give her the benefit of the doubt once, but she's gotten enough rope to hang herself on the creationism stuff. Just don't make the same mistake others are on Obama. They hate 1,2,3 things specifically and they jump to conclusions without wiggle room.

So here's a strange news story. A while back, a dude tried robbing a liquor store (convenience store for you folks in Washington) with a bat. The owner leveled a rifle at him, and the would-be robber got on his knees, begging forgiveness, saying that he was robbing to feed his family. The owner gave him $40 bucks and a loaf of bread, and sent him on his way.

This week, the owner gets a letter of apology in the mail from the would-be robber and a $50 bill.

My kids read this stuff, too. It is getting harder to explain the events such as those described in Michelle’s article. It is getting harder for me to keep believing it, too. I guess that just makes me a racist. Oh well….

The news may prompt a new series of blog posts, tweets and emails from climate change skeptics, who have used the scandal -- and the Web -- in recent days to advance claims of a conspiracy against their views among the media and scientific community. Yes, they do. The entire focus was on the store owner showing "mercy" for the thief (that's cause the store owner is an immigrant from Pakistan and a practicing Muslim), and he gives the thief 40 bucks and, the thief being overwhelmed at the mercy and generosity of the store owner decides that he, too, wants to become a Muslim! (and according to CNN -- the store owner converts the thief to Islam by having the thief repeat the Shahada.) Then, the store owner gives the thief a loaf of bread (along with the 40 bucks), and the thief takes off (all captured on surveillance film). Then, (x number of months later) the store owner gets the thank-you note and 50 bucks from the thief, who signs the letter as a fellow Muslim.

I understand that Obama went to Occidental on a Fulbright Scholarship, and that those are available only to citizens of foreign countries--i.e., those who are not citizens of the U.S.

Is this incorrect?

Also, Obama went to Pakistan in the early 1980s, at a time when Pakistan did not allow American citizens in.

Is this incorrect?

So, if true, there are two indications that Obama provided documentation, as an adult, that he was not an American citizen. Since there is no way that a non-citizen adult can become a "natural born citizen," it seems established that Obama is ineligible to be President.

I would like to see an explanation of how these two incidents do not establish that Obama is at this moment an illegal alien and not President.

In the radio interview, Palin said she had produced the birth certificate for youngest child Trig. Not that I think she ever needed to do so, but did she?

No.

Nirthers are not welcome to spew their nonsense at LGF. There are plenty of conspiracy sites that will be happy to let you post comments - I suggest you go there instead.

The way the right wing and the Republican Party are going, I don't think even Huckabee's clemency for a cop killer will deny him the nomination. The crazy is way too strong. They're just going to ignore all of that, and Sarah Palin's outrageous Birther remarks, and we're definitely going to see Huckabee and Palin running in 2012.

I don't know about Huckabee. He doesn't seem to have the same aura of invulnerability Palin has. A lot of right wing blogs seem very happy throwing him under the bus.

If it had been Palin instead of Huckabee, I'd bet the same blogs would be saying it's the nefarious work of Obama's operatives trying to destroy her.

“...I understand that Obama went to Occidental on a Fulbright Scholarship, and that those are available only to citizens of foreign countries--i.e., those who are not citizens of the U.S.

“...Approximately 294,000 “Fulbrighters,” 111,000 from the United States and 183,000 from other countries, have participated in the Program since its inception more than sixty years ago. The Fulbright Program awards approximately 7,500 new grants annually. Currently, the Fulbright Program operates in over 155 countries worldwide.

“...Also, Obama went to Pakistan in the early 1980s, at a time when Pakistan did not allow American citizens in. Is this incorrect?

“...In 1981 -- the year Obama transferred from Occidental College to Columbia University -- Obama visited his mother and sister Maya in Indonesia. After that visit, Obama traveled to Pakistan with a friend from college whose family was from there. The Obama campaign says Obama was in Pakistan for about three weeks, staying with his friend's family in Karachi and also visiting Hyderabad in Southern India.

“...I would like to see an explanation of how these two incidents do not establish that Obama is at this moment an illegal alien and not President.”

College kids do fun things Art... you have never, ever considered... exciting, yes...foolish, maybe...enlightening, absolutely...part of life and the learning experience that make parents shudder and politicians quake...!
I volunteered for service in Vietnam in 1962..as a 24 year olde...how dumb was that...?

Argh.

I'm so completely finished putting up with Birthers. And anyone who updings a Birther comment is welcome to follow them down the hole into Crazytown, because they are not welcome at my site. That was the last straw for katemaclaren.
