Video: Smacking the Hack Attack

Environment • Views: 3,407

Environmentalist Peter Sinclair’s new video is about the most absurdly overblown phony scandal in a year overflowing with phony right wing scandals, drearily dubbed “Climategate” by right wing blogs and Fox News, in hopes that it will turn out to be a death blow to global warming.

It’s not a death blow. It’s not even a stubbed toe. It’s a big nothing, a yawning chasm of foolishness filled with idiocy and hot air. The screaming from every right wing blog over this nonsense would actually be funny, if it weren’t so utterly, shamefully pathetic.

Sinclair puts some of the emails most distorted by the deniers into their proper context, and shows the incredibly dishonest tactics they’re using to continue trying to pump up this non-story, by fooling the gullible.

Not sure why Fox News is getting credit for ginning up this story, since a google search of ' ClimateGate' shows CBS news at number one, followed by a number of foreign and other sites, including the WaPo, as well as Fox. It's trumpted all over Europe on page one, so really, Fox is not responsible for whatever half life it happens to have.

I'm also a little disturbed by the knee jerk reaction supporting the Navy Seals who are being brought up on charges. We really don't have many facts yet. Would Lindy England have gotten the same support if Obama was President?

They were offered non-judicial punishment and opted for a trial which is their right. They may very well walk on most of the charges, but the swearing to a false statement will get them, it is a catch all the military uses.

I go by number of hits. Obviously Fox News would pimp up "Climategate" because that's what their audience wants to hear. CBS did do a couple of things but far less. Of course this would be a bigger story in the UK since it did originate from the UK.

This is why I think Google should pre-emptively give in to Rupert Murdoch and put a filter on their search engine to block all Fox/NewsCorp content. Of course, Murdoch will cry foul and say he wants them to show his sites, just not his content (without paying him for it).

I think it's a bigger issues in the UK because the Europeans have been force fed a diet of apocalyptic scenarios and are forced to pay dearly for adopting a green policy which hasn't helped control emissions at all. Again, instead of science providing solutions we are looking at political solutions the results of which does not mean a reduction in CO2 emissions globally, but merely a stabilization in certain countries with an overall global increase. It is a global redistribution of wealth.

I think it was about some rant of Malkin's about a picture the President chose to hang in the white house.

It was a piece by an African-American lady artist who took an abstract piece by Matisse and did a sort of riff on it, changing the colors and turning the perspective.

As far as I was concerned, it was slightly pretentious, and a touch dull, but I do not appreciate 'big-block-o-color' art.

Apparently as far as Michelle Obama was concerned, it was cool, and she hung it up on her office wall.

As far as Malkin was concerned, it was some kind of major scandal. Just why, she could not articulate, but a chunk of the wingbatosphere went slightly insane for several days over it.

My stance, then and now, is that if the Obamas want to decorate the private rooms of the White House with Thomas Kincade paintings, or kittens with balls of yarn or velvet paintings of Elvis, they should feel free. It is their house for the duration of their term(s), and they should feel at home.

One of the problems has been the incredible naivete of the climate scientists and their oblivion to political realities. Notwithstanding their quality work, their behavior was foolish.

They should have known that they and their work needed to be beyond reproach. They should have known that they had to be careful and open because even the appearance of a problem or the appearance of anything less than perfect on paper would be fodder for critics who care more about a political agenda than they do science.

Science has seen it's fair share of scandal in recent years, some of which has been spectacular. From phony claims of cloning to incredible Schon scandal This isn't new and it will surely happen again.

The AGW science is solid. The behavior of the scientists has been less so. The climate scientists would do well to behave more professionally and less like informal college students or academic lightweights.

The science AGW isn't the problem. The less than professional behavior of the scientific researchers has been the real issue.

Malkin claimed it was plagarising the work of the original artist (even though the lady had cited her source and that kind of play on others' work is common in all forms of art- think "Pride And Prejudice And Zombies" or Ronan Keating redoing the Belinda Carlisle aong "Time After Time".) It fed the meme of the African-American ripping off and exploiting the hard work of others, so naturally the wingnuts ran with it.

195 Bagua  Sun, Dec 6, 2009 7:04:13pm

As always, Sinclair makes an excellent video presenting his opinions.

And while he is quite correct in pointing out the vacuity of the MSM pundits in seizing on “hide the decline” and assuming it related to the actual measured temperature, he nevertheless glosses over this issue.

If I’m not mistaken…

The “hide the decline” refers to the Tree Ring historical temperature reconstruction. That it goes out of wack during just over a third of the time that actual temperature measurements are available legitimately casts doubts on its accuracy during the 900 years that actual temperature measurements are unavailable. That it only matches a portion of the actual measure temperature records and the part that doesn’t fit is thrown out or altered to fit suggests curve fitting and worse, fabrication.

That they would apparently consider altering the data to hide the decline in temperature in the historical tree ring temperature proxy by either eliminating the portion that was divergent, as was done in AR4, or by interpolating actual temperature measurements as is suggested in the email, would in fact be extremely discrediting.

Please note that I am only suggesting this may be the case at this early date, a full analysis of the actual data and models, which the MET Office has committed to, will either confirm or falsify what I have suggested.

Actually I think the data was on paper and magnetic tape. Was homogenized on computer and the originals deleted.

I think it is important to know whether the data was just transferred to a computer file and homogenized, or if the data was also worked on... It is common sense to keep your original data sets, before modifications, so that you can re-work your modification process through repeated iterations.

Unfortunately, I think this was not simply a homogenization.

"We do not hold the original raw data but only the value-added (quality controlled and homogenised) data.” - Phil Jones

I don't doubt the science, I just think it would be helpful to have the original data...

Your opinion is they should have kept using data they knew to be inaccurate?

Why?

You miss my point. My opinion is that this reveals that the historical temperature reconstruction based upon the tree rings is inaccurate. Thus it has been falsified by the actual temperature record based upon actual measurements.

It was wrong to simply eliminate the part that didn't fit in the IPPC AR4, and it looks suspicious that attempts were made to alter the data by interpolating actual temperature data to "hide the decline".

Quite clearly if the Tree Ring Proxy is wrong during almost a third of the just over a century time period that we have real measurements, it can not be relied upon during the other 900 years that we do not.

Killgore Trout -

From What I understand, the SEALS were originally going to get Personnel File "gigs" for "mistreating" the prisoner. Could have stopped there, the SEALS decided NOT to take the "gigs" and to proceed to Courts Martial. FWIW, effectively the same for them as KSM getting a Civilian Trial - In the SEALS Courts Martial, DoD Policy will be on trial. Beyond that, I would say be careful about what you wish for. Fellows like KSM just might NOT be captured for questioning any more. Go from there... the US Military may be a LOT of things - STUPID is NOT one of them. That is all.

Why? That is clear.

It fits the actual measured temperatures from 1850 until 1960, and then it does not. Thus for over a third of the time that we have actual temperature readings it does not correlate. In fact it shows a decline in temperature after 1960. Thus it has been falsified as a temperature proxy.

To assert that it is nevertheless accurate to a fraction of a degree in the prior 900 years that we have no actual measurements is quite a stretch seeing as it has been falsified for the far shorter period of time during which we do have accurate temperature measurement.

re: #317 Obdicut

Why yes of course, the only record that can be falsified/verified is the actual record of actual measurements made since 1850. As this falsifies the Tree Ring reconstruction, there is little value to alleged confirmation from other proxies.

It is simply curve fitting to use the record when it fits the theory and eliminate or fudge it when it does not.

You are saying it is inaccurate a third of the time when we have actual physical temperature measurements but highly accurate during the 900 years when we don't have actual measurements. I say the data disagrees, as witness the papers trying to find an explanation for this divergence.

321 Bagua  Sun, Dec 6, 2009 8:40:03pm

re: #320 Obdicut

Why do you believe this to be true?

I just demonstrated why. The only temperature records in existence that are based on actual temperature reading are those since 1850. Prior to that they are proxy re-constructions based upon the Tree Rings and other contentious constructs.

Do you seriously think that climatologists are just bullshitting about being able to measure temperature accurately before actual measurements?

Define "climatologists". The emails do indicate that some of the key "climatologists" may in fact have diddled with the studies.

But yes, the premise that it is possible to establish a global average temperature based upon Tree Rings from a batch of trees on one peninsular in one region of the globe does strike me as less than credible upon further examination.

Why do you feel you are better qualified on this subject than climatologists?

Why do you feel you are better qualified than me to have an opinion on this subject?

In fact, many scientists question the validity of the tree ring data, as witness the papers cited by Sinclair on this video. The issue of cutting out the data post-1960 from the graphs used in the IPCC reports was also challenged by other scientists.

Otherwise, dead thread. We can discuss this further on the next AGW thread.

True that, but we can debate the validity of the bore holes and coral and sediment proxies and such in a follow up thread.

I would assert that none of these can give an accurate historical Global Average temperature accurate +/- 1/10th of a degree. That is a whole nother can of worms.

I would assert that none of these can give an accurate historical Global Average temperature accurate +/- 1/10th of a degree. That is a whole nother can of worms.

But why would you assert that? I don't go around making assertions about fluid dynamics, because I'm not a physicist specializing in fluid dynamics. I don't go around second-guessing astronomers. I manage to get through the day without telling set theorists they're full of shit, or biologists that they have no clue what they're doing.

So why is it that you think that you are able to more accurately approach the field of climatology than climatologists?

If they were saying something bloody strange I could see your object, but since basic physics says CO2 added to an atmosphere will cause warming, and, yep, sure enough, we've got warming after adding a long belch of CO2 into the atmosphere, it completely baffles me why on earth you think this is a situation where the scientific community is way off base.

330 Bagua  Sun, Dec 6, 2009 9:24:36pm

It is bloody strange to assert that one can determine the Global Mean Temperature temperature 2,000 years ago to an accuracy of 1/10th of a degree based upon proxies proxies such as lake sediment and Tree Rings. That one of those proxies has been falsified adds substance to that assertion.

But yea, whatever, I get that you are a believer and are making an argument from authority, myself I prefer to verify.

It's not beyond my ability to understand. Climatologists have explained things very plainly and simply. Charles has posted links to their explanations over and over. I have too. You could understand it too, if you wanted to.
