Smear Merchant of the Day

Blogosphere • Views: 5,038

Usually I just ignore this kind of nonsense, but sometimes the smears my admirers post on their blogs are so egregiously dishonest that they need to be pointed out.

Today’s example is at “Weasel Zippers,” a raving anti-Muslim blog that stole its name from one of our random sayings that appear at the top of the right column: Weasel Zippers: Charles Johnson Shocked, SHOCKED to Learn There are Actually People Who Don’t Believe in Man-Made Global Warming…..

Zippy the Pinhead decided to smear me by pointing out that I used to be a “skeptic” (in actuality, I was uninformed and misled by the propagandists, as I noted in this post), and he captures the following screenshot from LGF to “prove it.” (Since I never denied this, I don’t know why he thinks it’s important to “prove it,” but it’s pretty pointless to try to figure out what goes through the alleged minds of these people.)

Again, read this post to see how and why I changed my mind. But the really creepy part is here — Zippy writes:

He really has become as dishonest as the people he once (in the not-so-distant past) detested….

(sorry, no link for the jackass)

Why didn’t he link to my post? Was it just to spite me? Or was it because there’s a very clear update right beneath the section he grabbed, that kind of makes him look like a buffoon?

Not just a buffoon — an outright liar, trying to perpetrate a smear job. Here’s the post he didn’t link to: The Great Global Warming Swindle.

And the same note was posted at the bottom of another LGF entry on this climate denial film: The Great Global Warming Swindle.

By not linking to my post, of course, he prevented people from finding out that he was lying, since they couldn’t click through and see the update that he deliberately left out. And he also prevented me from learning about his smear, since I wouldn’t see the link coming from his blog in my referral logs.

Just another day in the life of the idiots who will go to any length, tell any lie, sneak around, and distort anything I say to smear me. There’s an awful lot of this stuff going around the wingnut blogs right now.

You'd think that being open to evidence, and changing one's mind based on evidence, was the very same thing as being a traitor, if all you read was people who are angry at LGF for one reason or another.

2 Obdicut  Mon, Dec 14, 2009 2:07:54pm

Some people can forgive anything but someone changing their mind. It implies they ought to too, and they can't deal with that.

Charles, several of us have changed our minds on Global Warming. Its perfectly OK.

The only thing you can do is continue to tell the deniers "knowledge is a good thing - find some".

So would you still recommend State of Fear, because I found it very compelling, and a pretty good yarn (although not his greatest like you said). Was Crichton a denier? Was his research crappy? I ask not to be snarky, but because I'm truly curious how you squared these two when I noticed that Crichton sited the hell out of that book.

Charles,
Slightly off topic.
While I've always been more apt to follow the scientific consensus and have been a science advocate for some time, I completely understand the journey you've been on. I've experienced it myself over the last 4-5 years on all sorts of other subjects, coming to realize that I've been swindled by far right propagandists in the past.

I am curious as to whether you've reflected as far back as the Clinton years (or further back) and wonder if your perception of events was equally flawed, being influenced by conservative misinformation or do you see this as a recent phenomenon?

Thanks

I had a serious amount of respect for the work and research he did do make many of his novels as accurate as possible. I'm not saying that makes him a credible source, but it did make me stop and think at the time. Did he just link to bad sources?

I wouldn't label the misinformation as "conservative", more accurate to say "right wing reactionary".

Much of the conspiracy theory stuff that the far right pimped back then goes back to the same source that they pimp now: Alex Jones.

I find it telling that the far right reactionaries only show interest in his garbage when there is a democrat in the White House. They certainly weren't pimping his Bush conspiracy theories the last eight years.

Even when I was more "on that side" for lack of a better term, I was never comfortable with holding up a fictional novel as an example of reality. It's like looking for historical facts in a Dan Brown novel. There's a few facts sprinkled onto a whole lot of fantasy, and more often than not, bullshit.

Considering that his other novels are about cloning dinosaurs, and nano-robots that can assume the shape of human beings, however thoroughly his books are researched they are still fiction.

I do have a favorite scene from State of Fear. It's when the self-worshipping celebrity "who plays the President on TV" meets this primitive tribe, and becomes their god. (spoiler not included)

I see it more as a clash of personalities, and I try to avoid that kind of thing. I read LGF because I like the atmosphere here, and I respect Charles' sense of honor and truth. I read a couple of other blogs, but I don't talk about them here, and I don't talk about LGF there. It's not something that I think is germane to the conversation. I do think it's indicative of the level of immaturity of the others that they persist in obsessive personal attacks on Charles. I won't read anything of that type, I think it's a waste of time.

Mrs Big Steve used to tell me years ago that if I ever became President, "I could have all the chippys" I wanted. "Chippys" was her word not mine. Most bloggers don't have CJ's credentials. Their only 'claim to fame' are blogs with no other real track record of accomplishment.

They exist in a blog universe that rewards only ever escalating hysteria and charges and counter charges, as each blogger tries to out do the other.

Pitiful, really.

They do it because these are the people that think "sticking to your guns" in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary is inherently virtuous. Even if the resulting position is self-contradictory or shockingly illogical. To them, changing your mind on something is worse than sticking to something that's wrong.

State of Fear was filled with cites to the research that backed many of the plot points in the novel. I don't remember ever reading another fiction novel that did that as thoroughly as Crichton did there. That being said however, it is likely that he was citing specifically in favor of the viewpoint he wanted to put forth. It might be an interesting exercise to go back and see which of the references have since been disproved, or at least effectively argued against. The roughly 5 years since it was published have seen significant advancement in the science, even if it is not being effectively disseminated by a media that would rather focus on the controversial and extreme.

Maybe some AGW advocates (the ones with the actual scientific backgrounds, not Leo or Al) should hire pretty starlets to prance around in bikinis or sans clothing saying that soon, this is all they will need to wear, ala PETA and their fur campaign. Wonderful. And then they act surprised when Latino voters abandon the GOP in droves.

What's more ridiculous is that people will hear that song and respond by saying, "what wrong with that?" Human Events being a sponsor of CPAC and also the seller of their mailing list to the GOP.

Sure enough the most popular article at Human Events is a threesome of sorts. Written by Pat Buchanan and regarding or applauding the auditing of the Fed as promoted by Ron Paul.

I guess that blog author thinks that imperviousness to newly discovered factual data is an intellectual virtue.

Regarding the link to the updated post: if one wanted to be extremely charitable to this guy (which is hardly deserved), one might think that he was confused about the "update" appended to the bottom of the post since it does not have a time stamp.

If one wanted to make an educated guess, one might think that this guy isn't confused at all but rather a lying, smearing, jerkfuck.

I appreciate the levity, but can you remember the last time a politician actually conveyed that message: The Buck stops here. Some of Bush's admin blamed Clinton, Much of Obama's message has been tailored to push the fact that it's an "inherited" mess. I think I'd sell my cow for 3 magic beans, if a politician said ahead of getting elected (think 2012 or 2016): "yes my opponent/incumbent/etc has made mistakes, but as soon as I take office, it will be my mess. I go into this office knowing what it will take, and as soon as I'm sworn in, I will be responsible for the actions from that date on." I think I might faint if I heard that.

Sure enough the most popular article at Human Events is a threesome of sorts. Written by Pat Buchanan and regarding or applauding the auditing of the Fed as promoted by Ron Paul.

I learned some interesting facts about their editor this morning:

Jed Babbin is a former United States Deputy Undersecretary of Defense who served during the first Bush administration in the United States, and is the author of the political book Inside the Asylum as well as Showdown and In the Words of Our Enemies.

He is a political commentator and contributing editor to The American Spectator, and a contributor to National Review Online. Mr. Babbin is also a frequent guest host on Talk Radio WMET in Washington, D.C. He is an online editor of Human Events.

He guest-hosted The Rush Limbaugh Program on July 17, 2008. He guest-hosted the Mark Levin Show on August 10, 2009.

I also saw at Snopes that Babbin is the source of the "deer hunting without an accordion" quotation. Maybe it should be removed from the rotating titles (or am I becoming oversensitive?)

re: #59 andres

The verses are horribly offensive, but as quick problem with the link you mentioned: are we not allowed to say illegals anymore? I find it Orwellian to hear someone say that the term is offensive to immigrant rights organizations is kinda silly isn't it. It's an accurate term, even if it's taken on a perjorative meaning. It also serves a descriptive function, whereas certain racial epithets are strictly perjorative.

Would anyone lend credence to an article that said CAIR took offense to the term terrorist, or some 9-11 truther group took offense to the term truther. Please note I'm not comparing immigrants morally with the other two groups, I'm just saying it seems rather silly that if just because someone take offense to something, doesn't mean it should be considered a horrible and offensive term.

Most importantly, the idiot putting the song out should be out of their jobs, but color me pathetic if I find fault with the arguement, even when that person is right, but it's the way I am. Sometimes I'd rather be wrong but use sound reasoning then be right with incorrect reasoning, because the first leads to the likelihood that I'll be right in the future more often then the 2nd.

re: #81 WindUpBird

See Cyan, this is what I'm talking about. I am specific to a small amount of data, and so many more people go with non-sequitir responses. This is what is wrong with politics so much nowadays, and even the intelligent posters here fall into the same trap (myself included.) You make a point, fully expecting to be informed if you are wrong (lord knows half my posts say "I could be wrong" or "correct me if I'm wrong" and I usually have to put in a rejoinder just to keep the snark away) and you get complete trashing of the person you ask about. I ask, does A have any credibility on point B, and someone says, A did this mean thing and is a douche, they aren't credible. That doesn't answer my question, that's just an emotional response to something that guy did. Being an asshole or jerk does not automatically make your information wrong, but people will spout this drivel as if it ends the debate. It's saddening, and the really bad thing is, Cyan was respectful, answered the question directly, and was so much more persuasive than a drive by non-sequitir comment.

I know what you mean about CJ monitoring, but usually that the guys who are jerks and disagree and are offensive. Usually you can be pretty damn snarky and rude if you're on the "right" side of the issue. It's why I said I'd rather be wrong sometimes with good reasoning then right with bad reasoning. The same is true with attitude, because if I ask a simple question and someone is correct but an asshole, why would I want to throw my lot in with them?

Greg Craven (thanks for finding that, Charles!) pretty much sums it up for me.

What can I do? I can't drive less (work, ugh). I don't have a factory that I can clean up. But, I can make some pretty easy personal decisions...

1. Drink less bottled water (never drank much to begin with) (see "Scam")
2. Try to buy things that are packaged responsibly.

4. Curb my personal energy use.

Wow- that's a great piece:

What makes these voters potential Republicans is that, lifestyle choices aside, they view big government with great suspicion. There's no law that someone who enjoys organic food, rides his bike to work, or wants a diverse school for his kids must also believe that the federal government should take over the health-care system or waste money on thousands of social programs with no evidence of effectiveness. Nor do highly educated people have to agree that a strong national defense is harmful to the cause of peace and international cooperation.

So how to woo these voters to the Republican column? The first step is to stop denigrating intelligence and education. President George W. Bush's bantering about being a "C" student may have enamored "the man in the street," but it surely discouraged more than a few "A" students from feeling like part of the team.

The same is true for Mrs. Palin's inability to name a single newspaper she reads. If the GOP doesn't want to be branded the "Party of Stupid," it could stand to nominate more people who can speak eloquently on complicated policy matters.

Really nailed it there.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, for instance, wants to embrace "Sam's Club" Republicans. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee pitched himself in 2008 as the guy who "looks like your co-worker, not your boss." Even Mitt Romney blasted "Eastern elites." And of course there's Sarah Palin, whose entire brand is anti-intellectual.

Oh snap!

'alot' isn't everyone. Altho (watch out, joke coming!) I suspect that you're old :p

Its not posting on a blog obviously, its confusing 'niceness' with 'civility', and its this 'damn kids' attitude people get.

Its like there was that callback to a thread last night (when I was at work) and I saw it. I enjoy WindUpBirds post, and the whole 'I don't get you're humor, you're evil!' vibe on a poster I enjoy kinda got to me. Theres a definite generation gap on this blog, and altho' its usually interesting, today its just kinda annoying.

the 'non-internet' thing is a little harder to explain. Essentially I'm talking about the odd thin-skinnedness of people here. LGF is well-moderated and the usual trolling and such that goes on is kept out. It makes it enjoyable, instead of awful. That being said, people... I dunno, maybe I should withdraw that part. Its a strange feeling that I can't define well.

I have a terrible confession. A close friend would invite me every year to go see Zappa at the Palladium in NYC on Halloween, and every year, till I moved out of NJ, I had an excuse why I couldn't go. I started collecting Zappa vinyl in the late 90's as penance and its like a kind of erotic self flagellation now to spin any. What a doofus I was, it so incredible to listen to! (and occasionally annoying, ahem...Flo and Eddie.)

Little Feats, now retired, legendary road manager, Denny Jones was a room mate with Flo in the early days and managed them later....he had some great yarns about those guys, and Zappa and many others in the business...whenever Denny got a bit of rare downtime he'd tell us stories

Clinton
"Do we know who did it"

"Well, we tested the urine and it's Vice President Gores, but thats not the end of it"
Clinton
"What do you mean"

"Well , it's Hillarys handwriting"

Now, not why I'm a veggie and all, but, there isn't an environmentally friendly way to eat farmed animals.

He actually gave me a job doing artist and media relations back in the day.

Already happened. Nazi Bill White IIRC-- google.

This is iceweasel again-- jimmah is making tea.

BTW, Jimmah and I both wrote some hearts with our initials in them tonight in various public places, and some pro-LGF graffiti right next to them.

Attention stalkers! SEEK OUT ALL INITIALS IN HEARTS INSIDE PUB TOILETS ALL ACROSS EUROPE!
We'll be doing it (so to speak) all over Europe, and elsewhere.

hehe Glad to hear you guys are having fun! ((((Ice and Jimmah))))

Military Impostors Are Neither Few Nor Proud

Steven Douglas Burton wore the Marine Corps uniform proudly. He had rows of medals, including a prestigious Navy Cross, a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.

He posted a photo of himself in uniform and blogged about serving one tour of duty in Afghanistan and four in Iraq. He was at the Battle of Fallujah, he said, and praised the doctors who "patched us up."

But Burton wasn't a hero. He was a fraud who purchased medals online.

Burton pleaded guilty to a single count of the unauthorized wearing of a military medal. He faces up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine for violating the Stolen Valor Act, which prohibits wearing an unearned medal or falsely claiming to have earned one.

"The defendant was wearing some of the highest military honors given in this country for valor," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Akrotirianakis, who prosecuted the case. "He never served in the military."

. . . .

Schantag also said that punishment is often too light. Worst of all, she said, is ordering an impostor to perform community service for a veterans' organization.

"Don't put them with the real heroes, where they can learn more stories," she said. "Have them dig graves in Arlington National Cemetery."

Spit.

Sure you were in the right from of mind??

I almost got trampled at an Aerosmith concert. Outdoor concert in a football stadium (Orange Bowl) with Journey, Sammy Hagar, some others. Battle of the Bands thing. We were up front when the crowd starting pushing in from behind. The security upfront were keeping people away by, get this, squirting water at us with firehoses. So between the jam backward and the jam forward, I got literally lifted up in the crowd, out of my shoes and carried off. I'll never forget that. Luckily I landed in a heap outside the crowd, minus my shoes.

And that's when Joe Perry had already left anyway. Tyler & Co. were so freakin stoned, they couldn't sing or play. It was very disappointing.

Get your feet off the ground. Grab shoulders, heads, hair (lots of hair back then) anything, just get your feet off the ground. If someone steps on your foot (and someone will) and you can't move or if you trip it'll be the end of you.

We went to an Aeorsmith concert to see the opening band, Heart, and left after Aeorsmith's third song. They where a distorted, noisy mess.

Heart was fantastic.

Just so you can brag, you're colder than Alaska. 27 (f) here in SE.

Also, what decade are we talking about here?

I was far, far away from everything (no, neither in an asylum nor a prison) by 1970.

Can't really say how they played in the years after - or how I would have felt.

I have been going to live shows since before I had a drivers license and still do...I've been to every kind of festival, arena and club imaginable...it's what I do...there is barely enough money to force me to see Journey in a football stadium...I was way past that years ago...the best music is found at small festivals and clubs, road houses and saloons...it was always that way...unless you dig Sammy Hager and the like

It didn't take Godlike powers to increase greenhouse gasses and it won't take those powers to decrease CO2.

Perhaps they think Latinos/Hispanics will forget soon. Like in California.

re: #88 robdouth

The verses are horribly offensive, but as quick problem with the link you mentioned: are we not allowed to say illegals anymore? I find it Orwellian to hear someone say that the term is offensive to immigrant rights organizations is kinda silly isn't it. It's an accurate term, even if it's taken on a perjorative meaning. It also serves a descriptive function, whereas certain racial epithets are strictly perjorative.

Words carry power. The term "illegal" dehumanizes people, and makes it acceptable for unacceptable actions to occur. Did you know that entering undocumented (or overstaying your visa) in the USA is equivalent to a parking or a speeding ticket? Are those people also equally criminal?

Would anyone lend credence to an article that said CAIR took offense to the term terrorist, or some 9-11 truther group took offense to the term truther. Please note I'm not comparing immigrants morally with the other two groups,

Yet you just did...

I'm just saying it seems rather silly that if just because someone take offense to something, doesn't mean it should be considered a horrible and offensive term.

As I said, words carry power. Screaming at the top of your lungs that your adversary is a liar is of bad taste, but carries little after-effect. Calmly stating that your adversary is a cockroach carries a different connotation, justifying any physical action against them (after all, who doesn't want to get rid of cockroaches?).

Most importantly, the idiot putting the song out should be out of their jobs, but color me pathetic if I find fault with the arguement, even when that person is right, but it's the way I am.

So, he's right that "illegals" carry diseases into the US?

Sometimes I'd rather be wrong but use sound reasoning then be right with incorrect reasoning, because the first leads to the likelihood that I'll be right in the future more often then the 2nd.

In this I concur.

As for Zappa and The Dead, I saw them in relatively intimate conditions/venues. Like I said, this was the late 60s.

I read over the first two links. There is a lot of argumentation going on, on multiple levels, and links and links, including some stuff that is semi-supportive of him.

So, I've bookmarked the links and there is a bit of further reading needed. I can't just agree or disagree without taking a bit more time on this.

Thanks for the links.

To avoid confusion, you might need to keep in mind the fact that there are two Roger Pielkes - father and son, and both seem to be sort-of-skeptics.

I think it's the younger Pielke who gets more attention from the denial crowd, but it's easy to see how much of an idiot he is.

Long story short - he took a look at a range of model predictions and compared the predictions to the actual measured temperatures. Even though the temperatures were consistent with the models, they were clustered fairly close together (because they were measuring the same thing!). Pielke Jr. concluded that the models were wrong because measuring the temperature was more accurate than modelling it.

From Jean-Baptiste Lully's operas, the Dead's marathon all-nighters and right up to Philip Glass or Steve Reich, more is sometimes more - and imho, worth every minute of it.

re: #202 Walter L. Newton

yeah I'm one to want to trust Charles on the links, but the first one looked like a guy who just personally doesn't like Pielke. Doesn't mean he isn't wrong, but it seems far more personal at that Deltoid site than professional, and the other link was mixed, so it's hard to take from that the resounding zero credibility label CJ put on him. Are there any links that don't look like individual scientists just being pissed at him?

322 robdouth  Tue, Dec 15, 2009 8:32:26am

re: #308 andres

Actually you thoroughly misunderstood one of the quotes. I never said that the guy was right who made the lyrics. I said that the song is offensive, and even though I agree with those who say it's offensive, I will still not be afraid to take issue with a part of their argument if I disagree with it. I don't believe that you get a pass to say whatever you want, just because you're on the right side, so I took issue in a narrow sense with part of the argument I found specious.

Look I'm not just going to not say something because it may hurt someone's feelings, if it's accurate. The term illegal may be seen by some as insensitive, but others may deem it as accurate. If it's used in a tirade such as "dirty illegals taking all the job, lazy, blah blah." then that is spiteful and hate filled and should be dealt with accordingly, but if someone says that they believe illegal immigration is a problem because they think it's unfair that we restrict the amount of people that come from countries far more worse off than Mexico, and that we should reduce illegal immigration to the south, so we can increase it from other places, i actually would say that's ok.

Remember that compassion to one party sometimes means non-compassion to another group. I'm not someone who thinks illegal immigration is bad because of "dirty foreigners" and anyone who says that should be slapped, I'm saying it's bad because it limits our options on legal immigration. If I'm wrong, then I'm open to being persuaded, and it's possible that the limiting legal immigration is a meme used by those who hate immigrants. If that's true then that would change my mind definitely.

I wasn't even close to being a "right winger" during the Clinton years. I voted for Bill Clinton twice, and for Al Gore in 2000.

Interesting. I wasn't aware of that. I was a Perot, Dole, Bush, Abstain, Obama voter.

I listened to right wing radio (Rush and Liddy) in the early 90s and while I was not a true believer, I had a negative perception of liberals and progressives through the 90s. I was swayed by Whitewater-gate, and other "scandals" of the Clinton years but now wonder if it was all a hoax and coordinated by right wing ideologues......or rather, I'm looking into how these stories were concocted and proliferate.

All part of the painful self examination.

I saw Heart too! In a small theatre in the early 80's. I was absolutely blown away by Anne's voice. She didn't need a microphone, she had one, but I swear, could have sung without it. The woman has an amazingly strong voice.

You must be a lot of fun to go to concerts with :p
